Powerbook G4 started making HD noises I don't think it did before?

This might sound odd but when I'm scrolling pages or sometimes when I'm moving the mouse the HD (im assuming) has started to make sounds it didn't before, is this normal and just what happens? I just hoped something wasn't starting to "go" in the hardware. It's nothing really loud and everythign runs fine, I'd just like to make sure

  • G5 starts making Electric noise when Open Safari

    hi guys
my mac is making electrical cracking when i start up Safari, and i even get the spinning beach ball. It's only with Safari.. Other apps and web browsers don't cause this.
By the way , the cracking i'm referring is similar to when the computer normally starts up and loads the dektop.

    Hey thanks,
It seems to have worked. I reseted safari . Well at first even with restarting i was still getting crack sounds but i restarted again and safari seems smoother and i didn't hear the crack sounds

  • My MacBook (08) just started making a noise that sounds like a fan...

It's like the computer is working really hard to function. Programs are also running slowly. I checked the Auto Update, and everything is up-to-date. Is it on its last legs?

Yes, I know, but it works as always, there is nothing to make it better; cf Perian.
iStat Pro does not quite work "as always" with newer systems.
For one thing, it may report inaccurate temperatures (& possibly fan speeds), depending on the Mac model it is running on. (For instance, on my system, it tells me the ambient temperature is around 54° F in a room that is actually about 77°.)
The problem is basically that iStat Pro gets temperature & fan speed info by querying the SMC subsystem. Apple has apparently changed the query/response protocols or the SMC hardware itself, so this no longer works as the utility expects.
And Banjo is not as "safe" and digs too deep with core kexts.
Banjo is the new name for the same company that developed iStat Pro & the original & newer iStat Menus programs. My guess is that the latest version of iStat Menus is just as safe to use as the earlier ones.
However, I won't use it for the same reason I won't use MenuMeters: both rely on MenuCracker, a hack to work around Apple's restriction of menu extras to ones Apple develops & distributes as part of the OS itself. Developers are specifically told to use 'Status Items' for their menu bar add-ons, which offer some but not all of the same functionality as menu extras, & do not risk destabilizing the OS or compromising its security.

  • It's making weird noises!

after dropping my macbook pro 13 inch about 3 feet, it started making strange noises whenever I move it (this did not happen before) and when i insert a CD (while it reads it) but besides those two things it works fine, what should i do?

Something got damaged in the fall. That something needs to be replaced.
It could be the hard drive, the DVD drive or the fan inside the unit.
Sorry to say but none of that is covered under the warranty as it does not cover accidental damage.
Even though it is working right now does not mean it willl for long, maybe it will and maybe it won't, no one knows.
Take it in to an Apple center to be looked at.

  • Help! Macbook freezing and making crackling noises.

I purchased my macbook about a year ago and up until a few months ago it was running fine. All of a sudden one day after I started it up it ran very slow and started freezing. Then the speakers made some sort of crackling noise. I restarted, and eventually had to call support because it would freeze and I couldn't do anything. It turns out I never purchased the warranty but they helped me anyway. I did a disk check and the tech had me do some repairs. After that everything seemed to be fine. Until 2 months later I was use imovie and the computer just froze up and started making the noise again. Now it's back to what it was doing before. I can't get any help from tech support and I do not remember everything the tech had me do before. Is there anyone that has had a similar problem? I'd appreciate anyone's help! Thanks!!!

Apple start they macbook line on may 16 2006, so even if you buy your macbook at the very first day, few months ago you still covered by warranty.
Do check your warranty status from here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/
Enter your hardware serial number to find out what coverage is available for your product:..............
Try to reset PRAM and SMC:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
Try to repair permission by open application folder > utilities folder > disk utility > repair permission.
if you want to repair disk, restart using your installer disk by boot up your macbook with installer disk inside and press C.
Choose language, go to utilities at menu bar > disk utility > repair disk.
    Good Luck.

  • MacBook optical drive has started making noises at wake and restart

This MacBook is about 5 months old and the optical drive has just started making noises at wake from sleep, or at restart. There is no disc loaded in the drive, but the noise is as though a disc has been inserted in the drive and it is attempting to read it. This goes on for about 5 to 10 seconds, then stops.
The optical drive seems to work fine, reads CDs and DVDs no problem. This isn't a glaring issue, I'm just trying to determine if it is the precursor to a mechanical problem, or is possibly some sort of software glitch. Thanks for help if this rings a bell with anyone.

I posted this to a different thread earlier today. I will add that most of the experience I've had with this issue is in Tiger or Leopard. I don't think I've seen it yet with Snow Leopard. My instincts tell me it is more of a hardware issue than a software/OS issue. (Just my $0.02.)
I have seen this many times. (I support 100+ Mac Laptops, most are 13" MacBooks.)
Just to clarify, MacBook optical drives do normally make some quiet noises when waking from sleep.
When there is a CD or DVD in the drive, there are some soft sounds, and then you hear the disc spin up. When there is not a disc in the drive you hear a different sound. I assume it is relating to checking for a disc in the drive. To me, it sounds exactly the same as the quiet sounds you hear right before the "Good Chime" when you power up.
BUT, sometimes MacBooks make a much louder noise, that is similar the sound you hear when you insert or eject a CD or DVD, only sort of "doubled". Usually you hear it when waking from sleep, but I have also experienced it happen intermittently when the MacBook is turned on, under normal use, or not being used (but not sleeping or waking from sleep).
In the past, I have sometime cured it with a reset of the SMC and PRAM. This has not always worked. I have also seen it disappear after inserting a disc into the drive. Most of the time, the sound has returned some time later. I have called Apple on this issue several times, and sent the MacBook in for repair. My memory is that they have replaced the optical drive under AppleCare.
I will add that I have recently seen this Knowledge Base Article (below), with instructions for "resetting" the optical drive on a MacBook Pro, but it did work for me on a MacBook 13". Insert a disc halfway, take it back out, then put it in all the way.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2839
Past experience tells me not to be surprised if the noise resurfaces. My advice is call Apple if you have AppleCare, or if the MacBook is under one year old.
    Good Luck.

Is this thing a piece of junk?  My MacBook Air is running fine.  I've literally only charged the MacBook Pro battery a handful of times -- it's brand new.

At these prices don't screw around.  Just call applecare to arrange an appointment at the nearest apple store.
Alternatively post in the Macbook Pro forum.  This is the Mac Pro forum.

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • IBook suddenly started making noise

    Hello!
My iBook G3 suddenly started making noise. When you dont do anything on it, its quiet, but when you open apps, write stuff to disk, its loud. How can I avoid this?
    Matt

It sounds like you may be having some hard drive issues.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say? If it says "Verified," you should be in good shape, as far as the hard drive is concerned, at least.
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

    Hello Lahaina,
I will assume that you have power cycled the printer already, does that Correct the issue for a period of time? or does it continue as normal?

Recently my mac has started making faint clicking noises just like a fan catching against something, it is only faint but loud enough to hear. any suggestions please

While it could be a cooling fan, a noise like that is usually a sign of a dying hard drive. Back up everything immediately. Make immediate backups of any new documents you create after the full backup.
