PowerBook G4 System Sweep

Can someone help me do a system sweep on my PowerBook, where you completly wipe everything off the computer, and start over again, just like a brand new computer? I need to do this because I dont have much hard drive space left, and thousands of unwanted files, and some files I don't know how to delete. I would really appreciate the help.
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

While I think such a clean sweep is a good idea to keep a system healthy, I don't know if you really have to do it for hard drive space. I would prefer to just free up space and do the clean sweep the next time I upgraded my OS.
Go around to the folders in your home directory (and anywhere else if you have created folders elsewhere) and do a Get Info (File menu or Apple-I). It will report the size of each folder (after a while). That should help you find what is talking the bulk of your hard drive space. Then, go into that folder and do the same thing. You might be able to get some space back, find and locate important files and back them up, and do a clean sweep a little later.

Is it possible to install my PS CS5 on a powerbook G4 system Tiger. I work usually on an Imac system Lion but I can carry it during my holidays.

I don't think photoshop cs5 will work on tiger plus you say G4, so does that mean it's a PowerPC machine?

If you had a version of photoshop that would run on both, then yes, adobe allows one to install photoshop on two of your own computers.

  • Powerbook G4 - system 10.5.8 why won't it support Adobe CS5.5?

I know my laptop is a few years old now, but I have upgraded it to system 10.5.8. I just bought Adobe CS5.5 as I needed it for class and the website stated it needed system 10.5.8 (which I have). Now that I've gone to load the programs it's now saying that it 'doesn't support the architecture'?? WHY??? Adobe state it needed 10.5.8 and that's what I have on my laptop. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening? The processor is PowerPC G4 (1.1). It recommends 1 gig of ram and I only have 512 but surely it doesn't need a gig to load (I was just going to use one program at once or upgrade the ram later).
I appreciate anyone who can shed some light for me on this!

It appears the key point in Adobe's system requirements is that a Mac must have an Intel multicore processor, running on 10.5.8 and 1GB of RAM, among other requirements. Sorry, Adobe no longer supports the Power PC architecture, even if running OS10.5.8.

  • How to connect Powerbook 1400 to macbook with Gigabit ethernet

I have a wonderful Powerbook 1400, system 8.6, no cd drive only floppies 2 PCMCIA card slots (which may be both not working, a SCSI HDI-30 ethernet slot.
How can I recover the date on this computer, as i just realised after buying a new Macbook dual core that it has a Gigbit ethernet which is a different slot.
    Can anyone help?
    thanks, Maria

    Maria,
I also still have my 1400; it's in beautiful shape but I never use it anymore.
Since the 1400 did not come with Ethernet or modem, you had to add them via a PCMCIA PC card or install internally an Ethernet card (no internal modem card). I believe there is also a SCSI > Ethernet adapter but this is all more work than necessary. None of the ports on the 1400 are compatible with the MacBook.
I think by far the easiest method for retrieving data is to buy a PC Card Adapter (this fits into the PCMCIA card slot) for $10, then buy a small flash memory card. After you put the memory card in the PC Card Adapter and the Adapter into the card slot, the flash memory card mounts on the desktop as just another "HD" and you drag-copy the files to the "HD". There is no software to install.
    http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Default.aspx?CatID=1139
However, you will also need a USB card reader for the MacBook. Possibly you know someone with a card reader and they could burn a CD for you.
You could also use your 1400's floppy drive to copy data, then buy a USB floppy drive for your MacBook, but if you have a lot of files, this is cumbersome.
You can buy a used Ethernet PC card but you require the correct Ethernet software plus it may be difficult to get file sharing working with the MacBook, not because your MacBook has Gigabit, but OS 8.6 and Tiger have a difficult time talking to each other.

  • 23 inch and Powerbook G4

I am using dual display with a 23 inch cinema display and my Powerbook G4. It works great, but I would like to just disable my Powerbook's display completely, so that the entire desktop is on the cinema display. I haven't been able to find an option to do this. Is it possible? Thanks!

Hi, I have a setup similar to yours, I just close the lid down on my powerbook, the system then sleeps and I then wake it up using my external mouse or keyboard.

  • Powerbook G3 Woes - PDQ 266 - Installation Headaches...

    Hello people.
I have just acquired a PB G3 "PDQ" which has a 20GB HDD along with 512MB of RAM, Model M5473.
I cannot install an OS on it to save myself and I'm pulling my hair out.
I've reset the machine with the key combo stated at the rear, along with also PRAM and PMU using the key combos. I've also tried several tried and tested versions (on New World machines at least) of Mac OS 8 and 9 that I have, without success.
    The ones I've tried:
    - An original 'standalone' 9.2.2 installer that I can boot from, partition up the 20GB HDD into 4, then start the installation, only to get a a read error with 'the system extras folder'. (I've seen conflicting reports of what this machine can actually be upgraded to, perhaps it's 9.1 only?)
    - I have a 'standalone' Mac OS8 original plain white CD that reports at boot something to the effect of 'you can use this, wrong version' and prompts to restart.
    - Does this machine have a battery?
    - How do you turn it off from the grey-question-mark-in-the-box screen?
    - Does the OS9 (white-background orange 9) work with this machine?
    - Do I need the original 8.1 disc that came with the machine?
    Lost, dazed and quite confused...
    Cheers,
    R.

    Reyne,
    Nice work!
Just to answer your earlier questions...
-The Powerbook G3 Series "Wallstreet" M4753 requires a minimum of MacOS 8.1; this 8.1 is a special version that includes a Powerbook G3 System Enabler file, so a retail MacOS 8.1 CD will not work.
-Your MacOS 9 CD (white background, orange '9') is a retail disk and should work just fine on any Mac that supports that version.
-Your Wallstreet does have main battery; look for "Powerbook G3 - User Manual".

  • Can't start my 12 in Powerbook

When trying to start my 12 in powerbook (latest system 10.4.3 (?)), I get a chime and nothing but a blank screen. Here is what happened: I was directed via an email of a business acquaintance to a link to a Hong Kong Airport site which was supposed to give me travel instructions. Safari hung up on the site and I was unable to force quit. I tried to restart by pressing command - control - power button. Then I 'restarted' to a blank screen.
I'd really appreciate any help I can get with this problem. Right now, I've unplugged the powerbook and I've removed the battery. I'll try starting it again in a while.
    Thanks for any ideas!

  • Cracked hinge on PowerBook

The hinge is cracked and I was temporarily holding the screen in place with tape until I inadvertently closed the cover and now my screen doesn't work. Any suggestions on how to get this fixed? It's cracked on one side and the wires are pulling apart now. Thanks for any suggestions.

When the hinge breaks on titanium powerbooks, the system should be repaired as soon as possible, since it can break some of the wires in the hinge. If these wires break, the high voltage inverter current can get to the logic board, which is not fun for anyone, least of all the logic board.
If it still works with an external monitor, that's great. You should stop using the machine and have it repaired. Have a look at these links for information about repairing the hinge and inverter cable and decide if you wish to do it yourself or if you want someone else to:

    http://www.macservice.com/pbg4ti.cfm
If it doesn't still work with an external monitor, take the hard drive out and throw the rest of the powerbook in the bin. Ok, I'm being overly dramatic - it can still be repaired, but it may require a new logic board as well as a new screen and hinge, which is overcapitalising on a TiBook these days..

  • 8-bit uncompressed on a powerbook and G-Raid?

Has anyone tried to use their powerbook with a G-Tech G-raid using 8-bit uncompressed? I just bought a couple of G-Raids, a fw800 card for my G4. It works great on my G4, but I plugged in the drive to my laptop, and tried to edit the same project and the laptop couldn't keep up?
I ran some benchmarking tests, as suggested by tech support at GTech, and I got very low numbers when connected to the fw800 port on the laptop.
I've edited dv res material plenty of times on the laptop using lacie drives, and its always worked well. Anybody had any luck with 8-bit and GRaid on a powerbook?
System specs of powerbook are below.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Hi Chris - here's the way I rig mine when I've got 8 bit uncompressed stuff to do. fwiw - I've only ever had to rig it for short form stuff so not too sure about how well it would survive long form, anyways ...
    pb 17 1.67 - 1.5 RAM
    fw 800 Dual channel raid 0 -
    LaCie fw 800 cardbus - 1 drive
    pb fw 800 port - 1 drive
I get 3 layers of 8 bit uncompressed playing in RT.
That's grey bars. Additional layers up to 4 it'll go light green (for a total of 7), yellow after that.
2 layers of DVCPro 50 grey bars - light green for additional layers up to 5. Yellow after that.
And dv ? - I get 1 layer, then light green for the others, same as a normal drive. I guess because of dv compression.
Benchmarks for this - QuickbenchX - gives Sustained 100 mb read of around 115 and around 80 for write.
You can daisy chain also if you want - Quickbench will give you around 85ish for Read.
Not bad for a single processor G4 !!!

  • Powerbook livebox woes

After setting up my Orange livebox using the wonderful Bramley Apple tutorial on my Macbook pro I'm now unable to get my old G4 Powerbook to connect. The livebox is set to work with just the WEP address and even if I press the "1" button to turn it into pairing mode I have no luck. The best I can get is it telling me that the G4 needs to be added to the "Access Control List" but there's no tab for this in the Livebox config! Someone help me please!

  • Airport Express and system 9.2

I have a G3 Powerbook on system 9.2 and a G4 Ti Powerbook on 10.3. Each computer has an older airport card and they both work on my original airport base at my home. The G4 also works with my new Airport Express base station. Is it possible to get the G3, system 9.2 also to work with Airport Express base?? (I want to keep the G3 on system 9 for compatibility with an older printer and applications.)

OUMA74, Welcome to the discussion area!
If you still want to connect the Mac Intel via Ethernet an AirPort Express will not work for you. The AirPort Express only has a single Ethernet port which you would connect to your cable modem.
You need an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or another inexpensive 802.11b/g compatible base station. These have a WAN port and one or more LAN ports for use with Ethernet clients.
    Otherwise...
The original AirPort card in your iMac 450 MHz is based on 802.11b.
802.11g is backwards compatible with 802.11b.
Therefore your iMac can connect to 802.11g base stations as long as they are configured to work in a 802.11b compatible mode (either "802.11b only" or "802.11b/g" mode).

  • System Crash when downloading Podcasts

Using Powerbook with System 10.5.2, iTunes 7.6.2
When downloading Podcasts a black-shade system crash occurs requiring restart.
This only started on May 9, previously everything was fine.
It doesn't matter what size or what Podcast, within 60 seconds of downloading, the system crashes every time.
    Any fixes?

    Hey Ya' All!
Thank you Chas, you are right.
I appreciate the posts, but to a couple of you above this post, please read more carefully instead of jumping to conclusions. I am not suggesting the cause. I do not know why it happened the way it did. I am honestly relating the experience exactly as it happened in real time at exactly the same time in the download process six weeks apart.
I am a very experienced user and can only say it was weird. I have never had anything like that happen before. BTW: we own both Mac and Windows based computers and am a fan of both. So please, there is no need to be sell me on Macs.
Impossible as it seems (to me too really) there are other posts with roughly similar experiences (search "blue screen of death"). That is why I took the time to add this. Maybe someone will be a little more helpful.

  • Powerbook G4 Unresolved Kernel Panics

    17” Powerbook G4
System would receive Kernel Panics at random intervals (while running Mac OS 10.3 Panther).
Originally believed to be an Operating System a clean install of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger was attempted but it could not be completed (or at times even started) due to additional Kernel Panics during the Tiger installation.
At this point corrupt system memory (RAM) was thought to be a possibility as soon troubleshooting and knowledge bases pointed to. The RAM module (a 512 MB module) was removed from its original slot and placed in the open slot. When the Tiger installation was attempted again the entire process went through without any problems or panics.
After Tiger was installed all updates were installed, and software added. The system functioned without any problems but only for a matter of days, and then the panics returned.
New RAM was purchased at this time believing that the original module was corrupt, but this did not seem to solve the problem. The unit was taking to the Apple Store where the techs ran a Hardware Test and all things passed, but they noted the Hard Drive was performing irregularly and stated a bad Hard Drive as a possibility.
A new Hard Drive was purchased and did not solve these problems at all; all methods were attempted at this point:
    1. New Hard Drive, New RAM
    2. New Hard Drive, Old RAM
    3. New Hard Drive, Both Old/New RAM
The system continued to receive Kernel Panics. A full copy of Panther and Tiger were installed to a Maxtor Firewire 250GB external Hard Drive months prior, booting from this external drive seems to not exhibit any problems or panics.
Any ideas of what could be the problem? Appreciate any help?

I can't tell you about the error log, but do you have the latest OS updates? For example, this last weekend's Security Update 2007-009 v1.1 is supposed to specifically fix a problem where Safari would crash when visiting certain webpages.
OTOH, stuff sometimes happens no matter what level of update you have. Is this repeatable? Kernel panics seldom seem to stem from hard drives or logic boards.

  • Do I have a Trojan? Help please!

I made a mistake and deleted files for Avast Anti-Virus (and I also uninstalled it) because I thought I would be able to install another anti-virus program I saw at cnet. When I tried to install, I had problems and ended up trashing the file. Now I have nothing! (I like Avast ok, but I thought it slowed everything down.)
Then I tried to download a free software file from Lexmark (windows 7-64bit for printer 9500) I really need this driver, so I can use my printer. (The same software was used on a Gateway computer and worked fine.) Because of my slower connection, it took 9 hours to download, only to be told that it was corrupt. Its possible the connection was too slow. I think I may have a Trojan.
I am going to try and download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from cnet. If I am not successful, rather than hire Geek Squad to get rid of the Trojan, I would like to try and do this myself. Does anyone know the procedure?
Also- IE8 Freezes up and whites over, when I have several windows open. Sometimes IE disappears off the screen and then comes back. For awhile it stopped and then came back. Last few days, the connection has been slower.
Windows updates continues to download and I cannot get it to stop.
Any other thoughts? I'm open to suggestions. I don't want to spend anymore $ on Geek Squad or antivirus software, if I can get the same for free. If I don't have a Trojan, then great- I just have a lousy ISP. I need to know what it is....driving me nuts and taking all the fun out of my computing experience.
    Thanks for the help-

    Hi MRG1,
The procedure depends on the type of malware on the system. If you are able to  download and run MBAM, please post your log. If you run System Sweeper and are still having problems, see if you are able to download DDS and save it to your desktop.
    Disable any script blocking protection
Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
    When done, DDS.txt will open.
Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
Save both reports to your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Some instructions for disabling AV are HERE.
Please include the contents of the following logs by copying and pasting the text of each into your next reply:
    DDS.txt
    Attach.txt
Those scans are for diagnostic purposes and will not clean the malware. Based on what shows up in those logs I will post additional advice.

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hey Lennart, that link you gave was so helpfull, thanks a lot. I found this.
Follow these steps to reinstall iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes from your Restore DVD disc:
Note: As the additional applications cannot be selectively installed, this will reinstall iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, Acrobat Reader, iCal, and iSync.
Insert the Software Install and Restore DVD disc. Do not start up the computer from this disc.
From the Go menu, choose Go to Folder.
Do one of the following, depending on the type of computer the Restore DVD disc is for:
Power Mac G4 (FW 800) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerMac G4 Software/System/Installation/Packages
PowerBook G4 (12-Inch) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerBook Software/System/Installation/Packages
    PowerBook G4 (867 MHz/1 GHz) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerBook G4 Software/System/Installation/Packages
iMac (17-inch 1GHz) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/iMac Software/System/Installation/Packages
