The best maintained PowerPC browser at the moment is TenFourFox:
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
It is a Mac port of a newer version of FF thatn any PowerPC Mac can support natively. It runs, looks and feel like FF.
I found some add-ons that helped TFF with speed issues. Pleae see my post in another PPC forum:

  • Watermarking software for mac

I want to place watermarks on photographs. Is there a good Imac compatible software for doing this?

For specific recommendations, I would suggest you ask in the Mac OS X forum, Bill. You'll be more likely to get useful advice there than you will here in the iPhone forum.
Meanwhile you can search MacUpdate for "watermark" and you'll find a number of options.

  • Hi, My G4 powerbook has stopped receiving software updates.

For months then I go to the software update area, it searches and then says no updates available. I can't even update the software for itunes/iphone so now everything is ridiculously out of date and iphone and itunes desperately need updating. No error messages about disc space etc. Any ideas? I've had this laptop for years and it's never done this before. Thanks in advance

I get the same thing on all our G4s running Tiger, including a PowerBook. To me. that means that Apple has stopped updating Tiger and stopped doing harware updates for machines that are now over five years old.
I would not worry. All ours run fine. Think of it as you PB being "fully matured."

  • Where can I sell my great condition 15" Powerbook w/ lots of software?

I need to sell my laptop to purchase a PC (for my job). I have tried listing it on craigslist.com and eBay but had little response. Does anyone know where a better place to sell it would be? It is in immaculate condition and was purchased w/ all the software for over $3000. I am selling for $1250. Any help would be appreciated.

The price you should expect to get for your TiBook will depend on which model you have and how "pimped out" it is. A 1GHz TiBook will fetch the most, but you didn't specify which model you are selling, the condition it's in, and what comes with it.
A quick check of eBay seems to indicate that TiBooks are not really moving anymore. I suspect that the release of the Mactel Powerbook, as well as the newer 1.67GHz PowerPC Powerbook, has pretty much killed the used market for TiBooks. People can pick up a nice 1.5GHz AlBook for about $1500, now, and that PB has USB 2.0, can handle more RAM, comes with a larger and faster hard drive, and supports Airport Extreme, as well as having many other improvements over the TiBook. Deciding to spend $1200 for your PB vs. $1400 for that one seems like a no-brainer.
I did see one TiBook on eBay that had two bids and a current price of $2000, but I suspect that one was "bid-inflated", as no other TiBook 1GHz that I saw came even close to that. $900 would be a reasonable price, but I think you might be lucky to get even that. I'm thinking $700-800 might be more likely.
One thing to keep in mind: Bundling software does NOT really increase value, unless the versions you're including are pretty close to recent and you're including the original installation disks. Most people who buy used Macs wipe the hard drives and start all over, so if you're only including "pre-installed" software, don't even waste your time.
    Good luck, though!

  • HELP!!!!  I need to be able to use my PowerBook 5300c!

HELP!!!! My PowerBook 5300c with System Software 7.5.5 won't boot with extensions! One thing I know is that on June someting, 2008, I wanted to put stuffit expander on my mac. I would download it from an archive site, and put it on a DOS FLOPPY!!!! (Not knowing what data and resource forks are). Then I opened it on my mac, WHAM!! it opened word and crashed with "Sorry, a system error occurred, Type 10" messages were flying all over the screen! I stripped the data and resource forks using DOS floppy format. Does anyone know about how to fix this, any software. REMEMBER, this computer uses System Software 7.5.5 so, I don't need things only for Mac OS 9!

My PowerBook 5300c with System Software 7.5.5 won't boot with extensions!
Would it be correct to assume that the PowerBook boots with Extensions Off (press the Shift key at startup)? If so, try to isolate the offending file. This can take some time. You can either use the Extensions Manager or just manually move files (one by one, with a restart in between) out of the Extensions and Control Panels folders. In order to speed up the process, one can use a divide-by-two method for a large number of files.
Generally speaking, a Mac with System 7.5.5 (and the PC Exchange control panel active) should not have a problem with a PC floppy.
If necessary, StuffIt Expander for Macintosh can be obtained via a PC like this: Download the MACDISK.EXE file here onto the PC. Prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB (HD) diskette via FORMAT A: in DOS or the "full" formatting option under Windows (this is important). Run the MACDISK.EXE program on the PC. Follow the on-screen directions. The resulting floppy is ready for immediate use in a Mac, and contains a StuffIt Expander 4.0.1 installer.

I have a 15" Powerbook G4 i ran software update, After installing the new ichat (w/video) ask me to conect the camera, wich i dont use, somewhere in that process it froze having to force quit the update. After that i turn off the PB. Next day i try to turn it on, and nothing happens, I hit the power button, heard the hard drive spin up for a few seconds, then a little squeak, then nothing. I tried to power up with option-command-p-r. Same result. I powered on and inserted my Sturt up disk and run the utility, tell me that is ok, restart it, nothing. Inserted the hardware test cd, same result, I've also tried removing and swapping the RAM. I only have the grey screen with Apple logo and the dial thing moving. thats it!

  • Where has my DVD Player Software gone

    Folks, little trouble:
A few months ago, I bought this new MacBook Pro (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). The biggest change that I noted, compared to my old G4 Powerbook: My DVD Player Software is GONE.
Ok, it's not that much trouble, I use the VLC to open my dvds, but I'm still wondering: What has happened. When I try to download the dvd player software from the apple support page, the installer says that the programme cannot be installed, because there's already a newer version. But believe me, there isn't.
The hints from the help-application of os x didn't really give me a clou...

The DVD Player should be in your Application Folder?
Go to: "Apple / System Preferences / CDs & DVDs" you see the 5 "When you insert a." Go to the last one "When you insert a video DVD" and select "Open DVD Player" then insert a DVD to see if DVD player opens.
If you do a Spotlight search for DVD Player, you should see it as:
    Top Hit (DVD Player)
    Application (DVD Player)
    System Preference (CDs & DVDs)
    Doc (com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist)
    1 or 2 Images (com.apple.DVDPlayer.tiff)
If you park the mouse pointer on each one you will see the path to it and it's location. Maybe you moved the Doc .plist or Image .tiff? Let us know what you find?
Also a good idea to repair disk permissions, look half way down this article:
    "Repair Disk Permissions"

  • Invisible watermark - to be built INSIDE the images, how?

    Lightroom friends and all others,
I use Adobe Lightroom 2.3, Adobe Design Premium CS4 operating with latest Macintosh system architecture version, OSX 10.5.6, using MBP 17" laptop and MacPro.
I tried to Google on the topic, but most seems to show invisible watermark softwares for Windows-based platform. I have also went into three or four links, but came out for Windows even Google failed to reflect the search query result I asked for MAC. (sighs)
I would appreciate some heads up, techniques and if any standalone application or plug-in I can purchase, let me know with link etc.
    Thanks. Brian

Just slightly off topic...just curious as I don't intend to use Digimarc but...Is the Digimarc filter supposed to be in the 64bit version of PS CS4? I don't see it there but I do see it in the 32 bit version. That's on both my desktop and laptop with Design Premium installed.

  • How much better is Garageband over free Windows Software?.

I'm running Garageband 2.0.2 because I have an old mac powerbook 800Mhz that apparently won't run the 2 newer versions very well. Honestly, I task this poor old girl pretty hard when using Garageband, but I definitely make it work, since I can't afford to buy a newer mac.
So I posted a video on youtube of the video I did using my 6 year old powerbook with Garageband 2.0, plus a copy of Final Cut Express 3.0... Everything was done on the powerbook. Plus I got a hold of a guy I met over Youtube from the Netherlands (I'm from Denver) to play the guitar parts, I did everything else... He just emailed me mp3 files of his recordings, which I overlaid in Garageband, which worked flawlessly...
So during the video, I made many mentions of using an old mac laptop and the free Garageband software to do the entire recording.... We're getting like 2000 hits a day right now, but no one is mentioned anything about the powerbook or the free software. We're getting a lot of hits because the video/audio that I put up is actually top notch quality (of course, it was done in GB on the mac!!!) and people are blown away by it...
My question is why do people not appreciate what the macs can do out of the box, compared to Windows boxes??? I have a hard time with this topic. I work on PC's for a living, but have used macs for 7 years personally because they are so much better...
    Any thoughts?
Also, I"m sorry if this post doesn't belong here, but I wanted to get some feedback (from people that appreciate GB) on how great not only the mac is, but GB, too... Especially for being free software that comes with the computer. Plus, this project opened up, for me, anyway, the real power behind Garageband. I've used it for years, but with this project, I had to learn so much about it... I don't have any books or anything, I just figured it out and it's so easy and intuitive...
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
    Jimmy
oh, if you're curious about the project, it's a cover of Hotel California with over 30 tracks of vocals, percussion, piano, guitars, etc., and it's here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAM1g0oX4OE

Actually it's more of the opposite. Unless you are
playing a game like Oblivion, the extra Vram will not
make any noticeable difference in games. The pipes
and frequency are the same on both models. The extra
Vram helps in editting situations as there is more to
    draw from.
Never did I say it will make a noticable difference in games, I said 5-10%. I don't know what "editting situations" is but in most programs it does not help at all unless the program uses GPU to render rich 3d graphics such as animation programs.
I just have a MBP so can't offer a firsthand account
but I did read an online magazine I think in the UK
where they compared gaming performance between the
two and it was huge. One some popular games the
    performance was like
    60 FPS MBP
    10 FPS MB
I don't recall the exact games they tested but there
WAS a big gaming difference. So check it out and
    google for some test results.
Thats Macbook vs. Macbook Pro i.e. Intel Integraed video card vs. X1600, he wants to know how x1600 256mb compares to the 128mb version.

  • Software Update & Accounts

    Hi everyone,
Sorry for my english but I don't speak english well. This is my problem... If I use my PowerBook with Admin Account, Software Update works fine but if I use my mac with a Normal User Account Software Update doesn't work. I have set up it to control updates every day but it doesn't control every day. I've alreay delete com.apple.softwareupdate.plist in Macintosh Hd/Library/Preferences and then to set up again Software Update but nothing changes. What can I do?
    Thanks!

Apple's security configuration guidelines for OS X
10.4 are that all users who need to have an admin
account use it only for tasks that really need it, to
use a non-admin account for everyday use, and to keep
the Admin account logged off when not using it.
Many users ignore this guideline and unnecessarily
run all the time in an admin account. But I think it
is important to follow the guideline; it does make
one's computer more secure against exploits, for
reasons explained in many other threads. But this
tends to be a religious issue on the forums and I
won't get into it any further in this thread.
As for your original question, no, Software Update
will not automatically check and notify you of
updates if you run in a non-admin account. It has to
be run manually. I'm in the habit of doing it every
other day or so; it's a quick trip up to the Apple
    menu.
Ok. But I'm the same person who use a normal account or an admin-account. So, for examle, if I had to repair permission in a normal account OSX ask me for admin user and password... at this point is the same thing use an admin-account. Or not? The same for install application...

  • ITunes not recognizing my files after move to new Powerbook

Just moved all my stuff over to my new computer (Powerbook G4) using migration assistant and while everything else seems to be working fine, iTunes is not recognizing the folder with all my songs in it, called "iTunes Music" in my iTunes folder in my Music directory. Any ideas why it's not being seen? I'd hate to import them, since I believe iTunes would be making copies of each song.
    Thanks.

Thanks for your response. I'm on iTunes 4.7.1 on a new Powerbook G4 running OS 10.4. I was using a Powerbook G4 rental with OS 10.4.2 that I'm about to return. It's in the process of being zero'd out so I can't check the iTunes version but I think it was running iTunes 4.9, now that I think about it. I guess it was my mistake to think a brand new Powerbook would be running software more recent that a rental.
I didn't do any replacing of the music folder, since I used an automated "mover" program that ran when I first started this machine called "Migration Assistant" or something like that that did an amazing job of moving everything over from the rental to this new one. It was just like I was on the rental--my desktop, applications, dock, and everything else was set up the way it was before, with the exception, it seems, of iTunes.
iTunes started as if it were opening for the first time and looks that way. None of my songs show up, though they're in my user folder in Music > iTunes> iTunes Music, each album in a separate folder inside, including the albums I bought through iTunes. Still, no playlists or songs show within my iTunes application, nor does the "purchased music" category show up at all (typical, I guess, when it doesn't think you've yet purchased anything).
Also in my iTunes folder is:
    - a file called iTunes 4 Music Library
    - a file called iTunes Library
    - a file called iTunes Library.xml
    - a folder called Previous iTunes Libraries which contain an iTunes 3 Music Library and and iTunes 4 Music Library. Both of these are documents, not folders.
I'm hoping there's a way to trick iTunes into seeing this stuff, maybe moving everything out, upgrading and then moving them back in some way? Thanks for the help! Have a kids birthday party in a few hours and hoping to use my iTunes to make some playlists and maybe buy some more songs.
By the way, I have an iPod that I synched to the rental recently. Might be missing some playlists but all the music is on that, too.
    Thanks!
    Bob

  • Powerbook 170 battery failure?  Tips?

Have an old Powerbook 170. 2 batteries. External Lind conditioner/charger.
I've done complete discharge, recharging cycles, 4 hours+, even sequential ones. I then put either battery into the PB 170 and get only about 1 minute of use before the battery warning comes on.
As soon as I replug the power adapter, the battery level (software on screen) rapidly returns to 100%. Unplug, back to running on empty.
I've also left the unit in sleep mode with the battery inside the unit. Same thing.
How can I determine if the problem is the batteries or something with the PB? Is there something that needs resetting?
    Any tips, tricks, suggestions appreciated.

You're more adventurous than I am clearly! Appreciate your feedback.
Well, my Lind external charger/conditioner has a Discharge button and cycle that is supposed to do a deep discharge (several hours) and then fast charge followed by a slow trickle charge back to 100% (another several hours). So that should have taken care of any memory effect. (Don't have a voltmeter.)
Now, what's intriguing is that I turned off extensions-- and my brightness slider control came back and the battery lasted for a time. No more instant decrease in power!
So, I'm now in the midst of ye old extensions testing. At first I thought it might be Wiz Tools, a wonderful utility for the old powerbooks, as it has software for controlling the brightness settings. I figured it had gotten stuck!
But that's not it... now the suspect is Ram Doubler.
What's odd, though, is that all these used to work on this computer!
Hmm... just turned off RD and the brightness slider control is working again and the battery doesn't instantly go down (!!). On the road to a solution I think... maybe the baterries are old, just not that OLD! Perhaps an RD pref setting has gotten corrupted.
I tried resetting the PMU with the two paper clips in the back. That didn't make a difference.
As to resetting PRAM, does the old trick of option-apple key-p-r on start up work on PB 170s? Unclear... http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58416 I'll just have to try it and see.

  • Airport extreme drops out on imac, but not on powerbook....

    Hi
    Here's what i have running.
A 4 year old powerbook which always connects just fine to the internet, with no dropping of the signal.
A new imac with a airport extreme built in. It regularly just drops the internet connection, even though the internet is seen perfectly by the other machine.
Router is a standard netgear router virgin media provide.
Periodically, and some days it will be totally fine, but mostly on the weekends (like now) the signal on the imac just drops out (from perfect 4 bars, to none) and i lose access to the internet on this machine (very annoying when you are trying to talk to someone on skype!). after some time it reappears, only to drop out again.
I have reset the modem to automatically select a wireless channel, but that seems to have done nothing. So following the advise on other chats here, i set the channel to 10. However the problem remains. I thought, well, maybe its the wireless phone, or the microwave, but these do not seem to affect the internet connection to the powerbook g4. The software updater for the "airport utility" claims it is up to date.
And now i am totally lost as to what to do! Any suggestions? Thanks

I have this very same issue. Reproducable on 2 laptops (ibook and powerbook), both 10.4.3, to 2 separate ftp servers.
    Transmit fails as well.
Fetch, however, seems to work just fine. Does Fetch not use the underlying ftp command line app?
Transferring small files (under 1k) seems to work though.
The message I get is as follows:
421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed
Timesout for 10-20 seconds, then I get the message. Setting the transfer mode to "binary" manually seems to correct the issue. But this won't work for what I'm doing (Dreamweaver, which must use the command line ftp?).
Attempting to ftp the same files from my local Solaris and Linux servers seems to work just fine.
    sftp works.
    Apple? Is ftp broken?
