Powerbook G4 will not boot normally, only in safe mode.

So...about a month ago I updated my powerbook with all the updates that were available, one of the updates was 10.5.8. I came back after the update had run for a while, and found my computer with a black screen, and a faint white bar towards the bottom of the screen. The computer wouldn't respond, and I was forced to do a manual shutdown. The computer would then not boot, instead finally resting on a light blue screen with an active mouse pointer after passing the gray apple screen.
In safe mode, I downloaded and installed the combo 10.5.8 update, but it made no difference.
I assumed it to obviously be a software issue, and so I backed up my info, and reinstalled Leopard. I then updated to 10.5.8 using the combo update. My computer functioned normally for about a week, and then froze, mouse responsive, but nothing else. After manual shutdown, same problem, computer started to blue screen with pointer.
Since that time I've reset the PRAM, run disk utility a million times (no errors), repaired permissions, all to no avail. I've run the Techtool diagnostics on it, and it found no hardware failures. The computer will not boot from an external hard drive, ruling out the HD.
I've replaced the RAM with different RAM, again will not boot. The computer boots without fail every time in safe mode.
History on my computer, one of my memory slots failed to recognize memory any longer, and my logic board was replaced a little less than 2 years ago while I still had applecare.
So to sum up:
Powerbook boots only in safe mode
Stays at blue screen with mouse pointer when booting
May work properly for a few days after erase and install of OS, but then fails again with same systems shortly thereafter
Any ideas???

Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test from DVD?

  • Imac 27 Intel will not boot normally only in Safe Mode

I posted previously but the answer to the question was did it wake up in safe mode, i did not give it a chance and I restored from back up to 10.10, upgraded to 10.10.1 and it worked for 1 week and returned to the previous problem.
I ran AHT - Passed, reset PRAM, verified disc - Passed, repaired permissions and removed each RAM module and still will only boot in safe mode. The crash report is below.
It locked up while on Safari, and wake up. When booting it loads the first 25% then goes to grey screen and stays there with spinning beach ball or just pointer never goes to log in screen.
In Ten (10) Crash logs it gives me the following reason:

  • My MacBook Core 2 Duo will not boot up.  In safe mode I see keychain problems and Mach 1102.

My MacBook Core 2 Duo will not boot up.  In safe mode I see keychain problems and Mach 1102 and it keeps circling through the same error.  Also the screen is so faint (pressing the F1 and F2 keys don't do anything).   I got this from a friend and he didn't have any of the original discs.  Any suggestions?  From what I've read it's a problem with a recent update.  I've never had a Mac so I'm trying to learn and fix it.

I just had an issue like this. I was able to boot up with an external firewire drive, although it was a lot of trouble. I think doing an option boot finally worked; holding down the option key, I eventually got to see the firewire drive was bootable, and booted from it.
I put the thing in verbose boot mode (command - v , I think; but please look it up. I have no Mac books at work to check). In verbose mode, you could see that the hard drive could not mount; the OS tried to do fsck, but it failed around 2/3 of the way, and the CPU was halted.
I was occasionally able to boot normally, but never in safe or single user modes; these do a disk test first, which invariably failed.
I could see from the system and console logs when I managed to get the firewire boot going that there were repeated errors trying to access drive s03, the internal SATA drive. The logs on the SATA drive showed huges numbers of errors. At a wild guess, for some reason a lot of sectors went bad all at once. There had been a some erratic behavior before, but I'd put that down to the single processor G5 problems. (these were non video related, just freezes).
Applecare wanted me to carry the huge thing into the local Apple store, but I persuaded them to just send me a replacment hard drive, which they did. The new one works perfectly.

  • Blue screen: my G5 fails to boot normally, only in safe mode

    Greetings,
After a power failure my iMac G5 started to behave quite odd.
That is, when I saw the computer was off, I pressed the power button, and it turned the coolers on and showed a screen filled with colored "snowflakes" (like one an untuned TV set shows, but static).
Curious, I forced it to restart, which ended in my current problem: +it boots, shows me a blue screen with mouse arrow in topleft corner, and this is it.+
Interesting is that when I move the mouse the cursor doubles: one arrow stays in its original place, and another one moves around the screen. Five minutes (or so) later the second arrow turns into a spinning beachball. After the blue screen appears there is almost no disk activity to be heard.
My next move was to try and boot from the Leopard DVD, which took much longer as it should, but ended in exactly the same way.
After that I tried safe mode, and here at last it worked. TechTool Pro's full disk check (including surface test) did not show any problems.
Reading the logs does not provide any clues to the problem. Everything is pretty much the same; I suppose it's just I don't know which log and where to read.
(By the way, I don't have the Application Enhancer which can cause a similar problem)
Any ideas on what's going on and how to deal with it will be very appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

There may not be a problem with your disk, but there certainly could be some problems with your file system. If you have or can borrow a copy of Disk Warrior, I'd use that to rebuild your directory with a new one; it will probably show a lot of problems in the report.
If you can't do that, then at least if you're in Safe Boot mode, the first thing I'd do is Repair Permissions, and then Verify Disk. If the Verify Disk report shows serious problems, you'll need to repair those before you can get a normal working system again. You should also try rebooting with the 10.5 Installer DVD again to see if it will let you boot, after you Repair Permissions and Verify Disk; if so, you can use Disk Utility from the DVD to repair your disk.

  • Mac will not boot up - stuck in safe mode

Hi, my mac recently froze so I decided to hard-reset it in order to re-boot it quickly.  After it turned off, I tried to restart it but it sat on the grey screen with the spinning circle for at least 15 minutes, so obviously something is wrong.
I looked up the support section and it recommended I try safe boot, to reset NVRAM/PRAM, or to start from an install disk.  At this point I'm only on safeboot mode but it does not seem to be working.  I have run the safe boot in verbose mode but it has been running for about 45 minutes and not much progress..
Right now, the last line showing is "SATA WARNING: Enable Drive PHY PM failed".  That line has been repeated 4 times.  I'm not an expert but I think that means it's not working.
Any ideas/help from this fine community?  Thanks.

That means the internal drive has failed, or there's some other hardware fault. What backups do you have?

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Permissions.
    Re-install if that doesn't work.

In the text you say you are using Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard will not operate on a G4 (or any Mac with a PowerPC processor). Leopard OS 10.5 is the max OS for PowerPC processor Macs. Your profile shows OS 10.5.6. What OS are you using (or trying to use)?

    Hello,
I have a Compaq Presario CQ62 with Windows 7 that will not boot up to my log in screen and it does not matter what mode I put it in..safe..etc. I have tried everything I know to do ...like system recovery in the recovery manager. I have no recovery disk or anything. Any help

  • G770 won't boot normally or in safe mode... I suspect it has something to do with the boot optimizer

My Lenovo G770 will not boot in normal or safe mode.  I usually escape out of the boot optimizer.  Today I let it run and it went to the "starting windows" screen with a brief startup of the windows 7 animation...it freezes for a second, then a quick flash of the bsod, then to the "windows error recovery page" giving me the option of "starting windows normally" or "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)."
Starting Windows Normally eventually brings me back to the same place repeating what I just stated above paragraph.
When I launch the Startup Repair it "Cannot repair this computer automatically".
So I go to view advanced options for system recovery and support.
It brings me to 5 options:
Startup Repair (we already tried this above)
System Restore (unfortunately I didn't create any restore points)
System Image Recovery (unfortunately I haven't created an image to recover)
Windows Memory Diagnostic (no problems found-done several times)
Command Prompt (don't know what I can do here except for remove a bad/corrupted driver which may be the problem, but I don't know the driver name that is associated with the boot optimizer...can anyone tell me this?)
I've tried booting to safe mode in all of its incarnations and I can't even do that..it repeats the same things as stated above...windows 7 animation briefly starts then locks up, flash of bsod, then the windows error recovery page.
I've tried booting to last known good configuration (same thing occurs...brief startup of windows 7 animation, freeze, flash of bsod, then error recovery page.
The only thing that has given me any kind of result was "disabling system restart on system failure."  When I do this, the BSOD doesn't flash briefly..it stays. and it gives me the error message page_fault_in_nonpaged_area.
I'm at a loss as to what to do.  Not being able to boot into Safe Mode even is really frustrating.  Any advice from anyone?  can I remove the driver associated with the boot optimizer?  If so, what is the name of the driver and where (directory) is it located?

How did you resolve the issue?
I have the exactly same issue.
When I go System Image Recovery -->Select System Image-->Advanced->I can open all the drives [:Local Drive(C , LENOVO(D, Local Disk(E, Boot(X-where i think executable booting is here]. It comes with an Open prompt asking me to enter File Name with a File type: Setup Information.
I don't know which setup information and where to find it on my Drives.
    Anyone know how to fix?
I was trying to re-install Win 7 from DVD but it is not executing either.
Can I boot with USB Ubuntu and Install Win 7 from there??? but how?
    Need help?

  • My Macbook Pro won't boot up, only in safe mode!

Help, my macbook pro won't restart, only in safe mode! and it seems that safe mode has plenty of implications for use.  my usb memory stick doesn't seem to be recognized while in safe mode.  I was doing a cleanup on mackeeper just after I downloaded a trial version of microsoft office mac.  The trial wouldn't work properly so I deleted it and decided to do a cleanup with mackeeper.  than the mac froze while mackeeper was doing it's cleanup and the screen flashed black a few times.  Ever since it won't boot up unless I use safe mode.  Also, I downloaded the most recent updates while in safe mode but it doesn't seem to be recognizing that I already downloaded them because software update is still telling me that I have 6 updates.  So I am horribly confused at this point.  Please help, I need this laptop to do report cards (it's a good thing I got an extension). thanks

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in safe mode.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
The commands may line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V).
    find /Sy*/L*/Ex* -type f -name Info.plist -exec sh -c '/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Print :CFBundleIdentifier" "$1" 2> /dev/null | egrep -qv "apple|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|CalDigit|HighPoint|hp-fax|JMicron|print|SoftRAID|stex" && echo ${1%*.kext/*}.kext' {} {} \;
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 3
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, these steps are all copy-and-paste — no typing. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Firefox will not open even in the safe mode

Started with the addition of beta 4 where gmail would not open and it froze firefox. Added whatever the new addition was yesterday (3/14/11) and then firefox would not even open. Tried safe mode but it still will not open. Error message below

    Do a clean (re-)install:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-beta.html
    * Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Create a new profile exclusively for the Firefox 4 version and create a desktop shortcut with -P "profile" appended to the target to launch that profile.

  • Will not boot normally, but will boot into Safe Mode... what now?

Hey y'all, I've got an iBook G4—purchased in 2003—that's had its hard drive replaced (due to the OE one failing) and that's on its second battery (which will need replacing soon unless I can't get this resolved, then it's new computer time... ugh).
Last night I left it open and on and probably had a couple of sites open in tabs in Safari, as well as Mail and iChat open (Preview might've been open, too).
When I went back to it this morning it wouldn't come off the black screen (I don't have it set to sleep), and I thought it was because it's dry here and I must've discharged into it through the trackpad (though I've always felt it before), which freezes it, a problem that's happened before and that's normally resolved with a restart. Confirmed it was, indeed, frozen by turning the number lock on and off (which turns the light for it at the top of the keyboard on and off).
Powered it down by holding the power button. On restart it wouldn't go beyond the black screen. Tried it a couple of times, same problem. Things were pretty warm, so I let it sit for a while. Went back to it and it would freeze on the gray apple screen with the progress "gear" freezing after a few seconds of whirling about. Managed to get to the UN/PW screen once, but it froze after entering my UN and PW. Now it freezes on the apple/gear screen every time.
I used the Hardware Test CD to check things and all the hardware tests showed up fine. Booted it into Safe Mode and ran Cocktail. Rebooted, no joy.
Booted again into Safe Mode and backed it up onto an external HDD using CCC. I had done a clone a few weeks ago, but I wanted my most recent emails, etc.
Used Disk Utility to repair permissions. No change. Attempted to boot from my cloned disk image. No go. Repaired some permissions on that drive and tried again. No joy.
The thing "works" in Safe Mode, but I cannot get it to boot into things normally.
Seeing as it was online, is it possible that I picked up some corrupted font that's causing these problems? Got that idea from other stuff I've read online regarding iBook G4 start-up issues and this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
    Any other ideas?

    Gents, truly, thank you.
In safe mode I couldn't disable the Airport card as it was already off and the hardware was "not found". No biggy. I simply pulled it. Booted up normally without a problem several times.
I swapped in a known-good Airport card from another iBook G4 and put this one's in that iBook. That computer wouldn't start and this one started up no problem (and I'm posting from it).
Weird that it would go bad like that, but it did. It's nice to know what the problem is and that the fix is easy. I'm glad I didn't go through any restore or wipe and install procedures.
    So, again... THANK YOU!

  • G4 PM will not boot after using Target Disk mode connected Intel iMac.

    Hi,
We have some new Intel iMacs and have transferred some information from our previous G4 PM (one MDD and one Quicksilver) to the new iMacs. For some reason the G4's will now not boot up and kernal panic on the gray Apple boot screen. This has happened to all the G4's we have in our office. They are running OSX 10.2.8 and the iMacs are running OSX 10.4.4. We can still mount the drives from the G4's using FireWire Target Disk mode.
I have tried zapping the PRAM etc but they still wont boot. I have also tried running the OSX 10.2 Installer disks to try and reinstall OSX on the G4's but the installer cannot see the drives?
Anyone have any idea what is wrong. Never had this problem before using the FireWire transfer.
    Thanks,
    Nick.

I had an experience with a mini mac after booting in target disk mode while connected to a blue and White G3 via Firewire. After attempting a restart, all I got was a blinking ? which usually means the startup disk or system folder can not be found.
I fixed this problem by booting using the originall install CD and then using the startup disk menu to reselect the original system disk/system folder as the startup disk. On reboot. all was good. Only took a couple of minutes.....

  • HT1677 Safari & Chrome will load web pages only in Safe Mode; Normal mode receiving error "Cannot connect to Server"

    MacBook Pro
    OS X Lion 10.7.5
    Safari version - 6.0.5
Started several days ago, Safari and Chrome will not load any web pages giving an error message "Cannot find Server". When I shut down and boot Mac in Safe Mode, Safari will then load the we pages.
Can anyone help on the possible cause and resolution?
Note: Apologies for the community selection, it doesn't have many options other than iPod Touch, iPad and iPhone.
    Many thanks, in advance.

Did some further investigation on the communities website, another discussion/question provided possible cause cause, followed discussion and resolved my own issue. Link below to reference discussion is provided below:

I had Peerguaurdian installed, I removed an entry related to Peerguardian from LaunchDaemons and/or Startup Items and/or PreferencePanes under Library, instructions below:
    - Finder > Devices > (Username) > Hard Drive > Library folder
    - Go to each of the folders "LaunchDaemons", "StartupItems", and "PreferencePanes", expand each folder using arrow to the left of folders
    - look for unusual application titles (in my case it was *peerguardian*)
    - dual finger click on line item, menu will appear.
    - select "Move to Trash"
    - reboot Mac
    Hope this helps.
