Powerbook G4 Will not run off power adapter

Hi,
My powerbook G4 starts up and runs fine from the battery but will not run when the battery runs down even though the power adapter is plugged in.
The ASP shows that the adapter is plugged in but not charging.
I have tried three different power adapters, has anyone got any ideas?
Steve

Did yu notice this behaviour immediate after a software update? it appears you aren't the only one with charging issues. I don't know of any solution so you may want to search through these forums to see if anyone did find a fix for this problem.

My 15in powerbook g4 (1.67 ghz) will not run off of its battery even though it is recognized and fully charged. Everything is fine when it is plugged in. The battery charges and everything else works until I unplug the computer. Then it just shuts off. I am not sure if this is related but recently it was waking from sleep by itself and even booting up by itself. I checked wake schedules, and nothing was set for automatic wake. I tried resetting the power management, but that did not work either. Now nothing is working and it won't even start without the power adapter.

    Thanks for responding.
iStat says that my battery has gone through 392 charges. I'm surprised it even lasted this long. It seems to be working now, but it looks like it is losing its reliability and will probably completely stop functioning pretty soon. Money is tight right now so until that day I guess I will keep this one. Thanks.

I've tried a known good adapter and have the same issues.

I also have classic SMC symptoms (noisy fan, intermittant keyboard lights) and have tried SMC reset 2-3 times but am unsure if it has worked as power issue remains (another classic SMC symptom).
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The battery conditions look decent, have you gone through the Troubleshooting MagSafe knowledge base article?
If nothing there helps, might be a good idea to make an appointment at an Apple genius bar and have the charger and computer checked out by the techs.  See if something else is wrong, such as the charging circuitry that doesn't show on the system report.

  • HP Pav. DV4-1428dx updated bios, now just flashing light will not run off ac

ran a few updates including bios, computer went dead with the ac plugged in, will not charge the battery any longer, when it goes dead and I leave it alone it will charge and start up and run off batter but just like right now with ac plugged in the lightning bolt is just flashing blue, i do not understand, ive read on the other sights of resetting the bios with USB drive, anyone got any ideas or assitance?

Dude, I have the same exact problem with mine. It's not a cheap fix either. It definitely is the motherboard.
I'm no expert, but I believe the problem is a dead capacitor on the motherboard preventing it to build up a charge.
I spoke with an HP rep, which told me it's $398 for them to fix.
I let them know that I didn't have another $400 to put into this laptop. So, they suggested I try reseating the motherboard. And also reseating the memory modules.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01597750.pdf
That is a pdf of the laptop's manual. It'll help in reseating. Page ( 59 ) for the motherboard. Page ( 67 ) for the memory modules.
This hasn't helped at all with mine, but maybe it'll help with yours!

  • 2 day old MBP not running off AC adapter.

My two day old MBP is refusing to tun off of the charger. Yesterday I had no problems with it, But now when I plug in the magsafe the light doesn't come on or anything.
Twice I have switched the power outlet that the charger was plugged into and it worked until I looked at the battery charge level in both Leopard and WinXP. At witch point the charger quit working.
Battery currently at 41% and charger still not working.

Yes... send it in for repair or take it to an Apple retail store or authorized service provider for diagnosis and/or repair.
You have called Apple support by now haven't you?

  • PB will not run on battery-RePost

Sorry, but I posted this under the battery and power section w/o a response.
A coworkers 12" PB will not run off the battery. As soon as she removes the power cord it shuts off. New working battery was purchased and used.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

There are 3 components to the charging circuit: The power adapter, the battery, and the logic board (and within that the dc-in card).
When the battery is installed, what does it say about it in the system profiler (click blue apple, about this mac, more info, power)? What's the fully charged vs current capacity? Even though it's new, how many cycles are on the battery? When you push the button on the battery, how many lights light up?
You might have the person try resetting the power management unit (PMU), following directions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
If you know for a fact the power adapter is working, and that the battery is fully charged, then it's either a dc-in card problem (this is the card which has the plug the power adapter plugs into) or a logic board issue.

  • PB will not run on battery alone

Hello, a coworkers 12" PB will not run off the battery. As soon as she removes the power cord it shuts off. Any ideas? She is kind of tight on money and i am new to Mac.
    Thanks

Battery status can be checked this way:
Click on the Apple logo, select "About this Mac", click on "More information" button and have a look at the power information shown on the newly opened window (within "Hardware" section).
Maybe you can post the battery conditions listed there for further clarification.
As stated by Malicious DreD, batteries are losing capacity over time and the PB will simply shut down to prevent data loss when battery is empty.

  • I1300 1171-9XU will not boot off battery

I'm having a weird problem with my usually reliable i1300. It will not run off any battery at all. I have 2 fairly new replacement batteries that have worked really well in this laptop. Here are the symptoms.
Seems to draw juice while the unit is off, battery discharge level is down after it's been off a couple of days
Will charge the batteries back up to 100%
Laptop immediately shut off when power is pulled.
Will not boot off the battery at all.
The IBM notebook utility will not refresh the batteries
When the power cable is pulled and you try to start it you hear this faint pulsating clicking noise. The batteries work in another i1300 laptop normally and the notebook utility works fine.
I have some spare parts for the I1300 but I'm not sure what to replace at this moment.
    Thanks for any help,

    Thanks for the reply,
I started with the easy fixes first, changed the sata cables, and tried different power supply connectors. Both tests had same results, still boots up on 2nd try. I did not know how soon the problem would re-occur after it has been shut down, my shortest time so far is 25 minutes.

Why only one RAID channel is enabled? Array can't be detected in that way...
Well right now, it is not even set up that way, in my #6 problem solving, it was suggested that I turn the Raid Mode off and try [IDE] to see if that made a difference,"because I don't need Raid enabled for the hardware raid". It did not, it only booted to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" window about 60 seconds faster. It is currently set up in this way.
This is how it looks in my On-Chip ATA Devices
    How do I check this?

I do have another question. Why is my HP Printer showing up in the Hard drive test, and also why is it showing up in my boot sequence, is this normal?
And speaking of boot sequences I got in there again just now and saw 2 [USB:HP Photosm]

  • Battery showing 100% charge, but not running off battery

I have an Hp Pavilion 10 Touchsmart that shows a 100% battery charge, but will not run off the battery when I unplug the AC adaptor.   I have tried calibrating the battery which went okay. I have tried uninstalling the microsoft driver for the battery and reinstalling it and it did not fix the problem.I have also checked the "Battery Report" using the cmd prompt. The battery report showed everything was charging good with the battery on the laptop for many days.I checked the "Energy Report" using the cmd prompt. The energy report had some warnings, but it was all relating to energy use.I have owned this little computer for less than a year and it should not be giving me this much trouble. At this point, I think I have done everything I can do on my end especially since I cannot remove the battery without disassembling the laptop.  I do not think it is a bad battery unless it is defective because the computer sees very little use and it is less than a year old so I am thinking a software problem. Any additional suggestions?

It is my understanding Hp warranty is only 90 days which means it is not under warranty. I have owned the laptop for less than a year with it shipped by Hp on "Thur 9/18/2014 5:15 pm". I orginally thought it was not under warranty, but I just tried a Hp warranty status site and it said "2015-10-23" was the warranty expire date.

  • Powerbook will not run unless plugged in

my powerbook g4 12" will only run off of the power adaptor. the battery seems okay. it reads as charged. and coconut battery shows a full charge (albeit with reduced capacity after 100+ cycles.) however it will not start up from the battery. and if it is running, and i unplug it at the unit, the computer dies instantly.
upon plugging it back in, it will start up fine. but my date and time settings are erased. and it runs fine on the power adaptor. but suddenly, this power issue happened, and it's like the battery is not even there.
so i bought a new aftermarket battery. everything seemed to go as normal. while doing the initial charge, the plug light on power adaptor glowed yellow. when i woke up the next morning, it was green. and after startup, the battery read as fully charged.
and then when i unplugged the power adaptor, bang! dead!
so, no change with a new battery.
the power does seem to make it to the battery, since the new battery did charge. but the unit will not operate off of a battery. even for 1 second.
i've done the pmu resets, and cussed some. neither helped.
    help!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
The reason the date resets to ancient times is due to all power being removed from the system. The 12" Powerbook doesn't have a battery to retain those settings like the 15" and 17" Powerbooks.
There are only 4 components in the electrical circuit: Power adapter, DC-in card, battery, and logic board. From the sounds of it, your power adapter is working, the DC-in card seems also to be working since power gets to the system to run it and the battery seems to charge, the battery, especially with a new one, we'd assume is good, and that, unfortunately, leaves the logic board. There isn't a test to see what might not be working in the power circuit, so you have to eliminate things to hone in on the issue.
You can't repair a logic board, so if you need your system to run on the battery, you'll need to replace the logic board. You can take it to an Apple store, and if the case isn't bent up, they can send it to the Apple Depot, which for me was in Houston, where they'll replace just about anything needed to make it almost new, for around $350. We had a Powerbook sent off for a new logic board, and they also replaced the battery (hint, if you take it to Apple to be sent to the Apple Depot, include your oldest, even if dead, battery). If the case is banged up, they charge more since they'll replace the case. If you want the Apple store to replace the logic board in the store, that runs about double sending it to the Apple Depot. Or if you're good inside a computer, you can buy a used board and change it yourself. Took about a week to get it back from the Apple Depot, and it comes with a 90 day warranty.

  • Powerbook G4 won't charge battery or run with power adapter plugged in.

My Titanium Powerbook G4 will not charge the battery or run with the power adapter plugged in. When plugged in the power adapter doesn't change to amber showing its charging. Instead it has a green light that flashes off and on. I thought it was a defective power adapter but when its plugged in to another powerbook its seems to be working properly. I reset the PMU but that didn't help. I have been unable to find anything that would tell me what a flashing green means.
    Powerbook Titanium G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, Marshall. With no power being supplied to the Mac for several months, not only has your main battery gone flat (and may never again be able to take a charge), but your internal backup battery has also gone flat. A Tibook with a dead backup battery generally will not start up at all, even with AC power connected.
Try this: remove the main battery and leave the AC power adapter connected overnight in an attempt to recharge the backup battery. If the Powerbook won't start in the morning under AC power, the backup battery is shot, has lost the ability to be charged, and must be replaced.
If the PB starts up in the morning on AC power, set the date and time correctly, shut the computer down, insert the main battery, and allow 48 hours with AC power connected in an attempt to charge the main battery. Then disconnect the AC adapter and try to start up under battery power. If that doesn't work, and no lights or only one flashing light appear when you press the power-indicator button on the battery, you'll have to replace the main battery.

  • Test Stand LabView adapter 8.6 run time will not run 8.5 VIs

I’m trying to run a script I developed with a dev computer on
a regular PC set up with a Test Stand User Gui, and run times for Test Stand
    and Labview.
With the Test Stand Labview adapter set to 8.6.1 all of my
ENA(Agilent Network Analyzer) calls fail for “VI Version is too early to
convert  to the current  LabVIEW version.”  The ENA library is written in 8.5.  If I set the adapter to 8.5.1 then all of the
VIs developed in 8.6 fail.  In addition
it will not run any VIs that I save back to 8.5.  I installed a demo Labview development
version (2010?) and everything ran fine with the adapter set to Development
    System.
I am not sure what to try next to get it to run on the
    regular PC, any hints.
    Test Stand = 4.2
    LabView = 8.6
    Running in windows XP
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

One of the many things I tried was saving the ENA library to 8.6, but I could not get it work.
This is the Original library I installed and was trying to Convert (8.0 upgrade agena.zip)

    http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.download_page?p_id_guid=74D1F1D4EB5268E8E04400144FB7D2...
I am pretty new to labview so I am not sure how to make the save to previous version workfor libraries, but I can easily do it with individual VIs.  For libraries, it creates a new directory, and puts in all of the files and then asks me about saving the lib files as something else.  This is where I think I get it wrong.  I tried it again today and got the same results.
    I greatly appreciate the Help

    I have this error message displayed - www.bberror.com/bb10-0015 - on my Z30.
So the screen is black (looks like it's off), but when i start the reload process in BB Link (with device connected), i get a message asking me to switch off the device. It will not turn off. If i hold the 'off' button down, it just starts up again and then displays the error message once more. What can i do?

Remove the back cover. At the bottom behind that cover is a label with a lot of tiny print on it. In that print will somewhere be STA100-something...that "something" is what determines your exact Z30 model number.

    2. I cannot do a backup either because of above.
Like insurance, the time to take a backup is before problems happen. It is a hard lesson to learn, but one should never allow an update to a computing device to begin unless one has a full and complete backup in hand. Further, a regular procedure of taking backups is always recommended so as to minimize the loss of data should a catastrophic failure happen.
    Ben2 wrote:
Finally, with the state i have described, will the autoloader run?
I cannot predict the outcome of making the attempt. I can, of course, predict the outcome of never trying at all. You may have to experiment with timing of starting up your BB, connecting it to your PC, and launching the AutoLoader. Given the condition of your BB, you may have to try a few tricks with different timings of those actions. But AutoLoaders are pretty forceful...generally, if power is flowing through the BB at all and the display is doing anything at all, then the AutoLoader can attach to it and conduct it's process.
    Good luck!

  • MSI z77A-G43 - After Shutdown - Fans will not turn off

Just installed a new MSI Z77A-G43 Motherboard for my husband since his old motherboard died. The one thing I've noticed though is that the fans will not turn off after I do a shutdown and I'd have to do a manual shut down instead. Any ideas what could be happening? Also it will randomly restart when not shutdown completely with the fans still on.
Here are the specs of the PC.
    MOBO: Z77A-G43
    Processor: Intel i5 - 2500k Quad Core
Video Card: Geforce - GT 610
    Ram: 8 Gigs
Hard Drive - 128gb ssd and 1.5 tb hdd
It's really barebones since I'm trying to just get it to run then get it back to normal working order with the next pay check
    EDIT!!!!::
Forgot OS is Window 7 Ultimate X64

If you are sure that your CPU is seated properly and that the PWM fan connector is seated correctly, then you may want to test with another known working PSU. I am not saying that your PSU is faulty, but before exhanging the board, I would definitely test that as well.
EDIT: Just a question, did you disconnect the power switch and the other front panel connectors of your case and started the PC by shorting the Power switch [pins 6 and 8 on JFP 1]with a screw driver tip ? The remote possibility exits that the cables may have been connected incorrectly or may have a short.
