Powerbook G4 will not zap PRAM

My 1.25 Powerbook G4 won't start-up when I go through the keyboard zap PRAM procedure. It starts up but I get no chime, just a blank black screen. Only when I let go of the keyboard it starts up as normal. As a result, I am unable to zap the PRAM. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

Mark
You can try starting up into Open Firmware and resetting it from there. To start up in OF you need to press Cmd-Alt-o-f on startup and then if you see a white screen with small black text, do the following:
1. Instead of typing "mac-boot" at the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-nvram
2. Press Return.
3. At the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-all
4. Press Return.
If you cannot get to the OF screen then perhaps try resetting the PMU first.

  • Powerbook G4 will not boot normally, only in safe mode.

So...about a month ago I updated my powerbook with all the updates that were available, one of the updates was 10.5.8. I came back after the update had run for a while, and found my computer with a black screen, and a faint white bar towards the bottom of the screen. The computer wouldn't respond, and I was forced to do a manual shutdown. The computer would then not boot, instead finally resting on a light blue screen with an active mouse pointer after passing the gray apple screen.
In safe mode, I downloaded and installed the combo 10.5.8 update, but it made no difference.
I assumed it to obviously be a software issue, and so I backed up my info, and reinstalled Leopard. I then updated to 10.5.8 using the combo update. My computer functioned normally for about a week, and then froze, mouse responsive, but nothing else. After manual shutdown, same problem, computer started to blue screen with pointer.
Since that time I've reset the PRAM, run disk utility a million times (no errors), repaired permissions, all to no avail. I've run the Techtool diagnostics on it, and it found no hardware failures. The computer will not boot from an external hard drive, ruling out the HD.
I've replaced the RAM with different RAM, again will not boot. The computer boots without fail every time in safe mode.
History on my computer, one of my memory slots failed to recognize memory any longer, and my logic board was replaced a little less than 2 years ago while I still had applecare.
    So to sum up:
Powerbook boots only in safe mode
Stays at blue screen with mouse pointer when booting
May work properly for a few days after erase and install of OS, but then fails again with same systems shortly thereafter
    Any ideas???

Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test from DVD?

  • Powerbook g4 will not find hd

when i use the OSX leopard disk it will not find the hd when i use disk utility
I think it's a missing file or problem with the startup folder. any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

Yet again a new hard drive is the first response from apple.
If I may, I would like to point out that the responses made to questions posted by users in these forums are made by volunteer Mac users, not employees of Apple. To get assistance from Apple you need to go to the Genius Bar, an Apple Certified Repair facility or Apple Tech support. We have no more connection to Apple than you or anyone else who posts in these forums.
Secondly, I note you seem to have a problem with suggestions for HDD replacement. In response to a topic you posted under your own name I gave a fairly detailed response for the basis of some of our assumptions when we make that suggestion. If you read posts you will find many other remedies suggested, such as running Repair Disk, running Apple Hardware Test, testing with a new test user, etc. I note you have 9 posts so far. I suggest that you reserve judgement for a bit later, read posts with an open mind, and ask questions or offer your own suggestions, as you eventually did in this thread. In this way you can make constructive contributions without unnecessarily raising hackles or violating the Terms of Use of Apple Discussions.

  • Help! PowerBook G4 will not shut down using normal methods!

Recently, my PowerBook G4 Aluminum (1.5/1.67 GHz) will not shut down. It has recently started doing this. When I choose any of the shut down, restart, log out items in the  (apple) menu, it will not bring up a dialog. Same with pushing power button. I have to do sudo reboot in the Terminal to make it shut off, or otherwise I can just hold the power button. Tried resetting PRAM. Recently downloaded a few apps. Can anyone help?
    -The Mac Bot

It's been a long time since I've revisited this...
Reinstalled OS due to main account getting corrupted. Could not log in.
That did not resolve the corrupted account, so I booted up with command-S and issued a few commands to reset and force the Setup Assistant to run. That worked, allowed me to login and start fresh.
That did not solve the not shutting down problem.
I am able to "lock" the system (using MacLoc) and shut down from the login window.
Or if I have Fast User Switching enabled I can choose "Login Window..." from the menu, and shut down from there.
A long time ago, I edited a few .nib files inside /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow/Contents/Resources.
A reinstall replaced those files with the originals.
Still cannot shut down by pressing power button and clicking Shut Down, or choosing log out, shut down, or restart from the apple menu.
Important clue: If I press Shift-Command-Q (the log out hotkey) the window I am working with dims as if another window popped up, but no other window popped up.

  • HT1752 my powerbook g4 will not boot up. i get a blue screen. i have tried to start up in safe mode, but get the same blue screen.

My Powerbook G4 (with Snow Leopard operating system) will not boot up, I get a blue screen. I have tried to start up in safe mode by holding down shift key after startup tone, but end up with same result...blue screen. I need important photos and documents of this laptop, Even if I can just get it started up one more time. Need help fast! If you know what to do, please message back.

In the text you say you are using Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard will not operate on a G4 (or any Mac with a PowerPC processor). Leopard OS 10.5 is the max OS for PowerPC processor Macs. Your profile shows OS 10.5.6. What OS are you using (or trying to use)?
Will the PB boot using a systen install DVD?

  • Powerbook G4 Will not run off power adapter

    Hi,
My powerbook G4 starts up and runs fine from the battery but will not run when the battery runs down even though the power adapter is plugged in.
The ASP shows that the adapter is plugged in but not charging.
I have tried three different power adapters, has anyone got any ideas?
    Steve

Did yu notice this behaviour immediate after a software update? it appears you aren't the only one with charging issues. I don't know of any solution so you may want to search through these forums to see if anyone did find a fix for this problem.

  • Powerbook G4 Will not power up... Help Please

I recently left my PB G4 on in sleep mode until it completely killed the battery. This was a replacement for a recalled battery and it will not hold any charge whatsoever. Apple is sending me a replacement battery...
So today I power up my computer which after it was up and running, a plethera of words came up on the screen the last of which it said it was waiting for a remote connection to repair. I shut the computer down and every time I have tried to boot it up (with the exception of one) the starting sound takes place but the screen stays black. The one time it did do something else, it opened in Open Firmware with a date back around 1904. I reset the date to current with a command I found on the web, told it to mac-boot, then the screen turned grey with a lot vertical lines every 1/16" or so. never went any further, so I shut it down and it resumed the startup with the sound but the screen staying black ever since.
Can someone please give me some advice (besides sever both of my legs & 1 arm to pay for sending it back to apple to diagnose as it is out of warranty)? It's only 1 1/2 years old, but of course the one time I don't buy and extended warranty.....

Check first that one of these programs doesn't apply to you:
    http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/powerbook.html
These places often cost less than Apple, and I'd give them a call:
    http://www.dttservice.com/
    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
    http://www.microdocusa.com/
    http://www.macspecialist.com/
    http://www.techrestore.com/
I think both your graphics chip, and your clock battery need replacement, but one of these places would be able to tell for certain.

  • We have an old titanium PowerBook that will not connect to our AirPort Extreme network. What gives.

We have an old titanium PowerBook that will easily connect to any WiFi cafe or hotel network, but will not connect to our AirPort Extreme network. What gives.
When the Apple Tec. installed our network for our 3 iMAXs, he couldn't it to connect either. Of course our two iPads have no trouble connecting.
We are also having trouble getting it to upgrade from OS 10.5.8 to 10.6, even though I have a Snow Leopard up date family pack.

What is your Wireless Security setting on the network?  Since you are running Leopard, I may not have the desired answer, but some of the Airport-equipped laptops, like the TiBooks, are said not to support all of the settings.  I have an AE network which supports b and g, with "WPA2 Personal" settings and the TiBooks connect with that one OK with 811.b Airport.
Oh, and no way to upgrade beyond 10.5.8 Leopard for PPC machines like the Titanium G4 Powerbooks, as 10.6 and above require Intel processors.
EDIT: I didn't notice this, but the TiBooks may be connecting with WPA encryption on my network, as I have the following display on my settings:

  • Powerbook g3 will  not auto reconnect to iMac airport after sleep

iMac is a late-2006 intel, airport extreme. I'm internet sharing. If the powerbook sleeps, it will not auto-reconnect after waking. I can't even enter the password to reconnect; it displays an error message. I have to turn off-and-on the iMac's airport, and then the powerbook auto-reconnects.

    Welcome to the discussions, Dan!
If the powerbook sleeps, it will not auto-reconnect after waking.
The AirPort Extreme is "always on", there are no "sleep" related adjustments on this device. The "sleep" issue is with your powerbook or the operating system that the powerbook is using.
Suggest that you post in the PowerBook Forum for your specific question.

  • Powerbook G4 will not install OS X

Hey guys, so my sister gave me her old Powerbook G4 15inch 1.5 ghz. She had a lot of stuff on it and I had the great idea of reinstalling the system software and starting fresh. I did the following:
    1) Started up in Target Disk Mode
    2) Plugged it into my friend Macbook with OS X 10.5 installed
    3) Repartitioned the powerbook's harddrive as MacOS Extended and checked the "Install os 9 drivers" option
So everything formatted and the hard drive is empty. So now I try to install OS X 10.5 from my install DVD and the laptop spits it right back out after a minute or so. My sister doesn't have her original disks, so I borrow my friends OS X 10.3 install CD's. When I start up the computer will begin to read the disks and then the grey screen with the apple logo comes up, about a minute later the logo changes from the apple to a "DO NOT ENTER" that circle with a line thru it, sign.
This is where I'm at.. Can ANYONE PLEASE help... If I just start up the computer it will only get as far as a grey screen with a blue folder that switches from the little blue face thingy to a question mark and back...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
    JP

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like you do may not be using the right discs. If you want to install Leopard, you will need the retail DVD--black with the purple aurora. If you want to install the original OS (Panther?), you need the exact install discs for the PowerBook. If you don't have these, you can call Apple with the serial number and get a replacement set for a fee.
Any other gray machine specific discs will simply not work. These are optimized for the computer they were shipped with.
The ?/Mac face just reflects the fact that the drive you erased is empty and there is no OS on it.
The idea of erasing and reinstalling the system software is basically a good idea. It just sounds like you are trying to use the wrong discs and will need to try to acquire the right ones.
    Good luck!

  • Powerbook G4 will not charge the battery

Having been away for a month I've returned home to my trusty PowerBook G4 and booted it up only to find that the battery is not charging.
The battery is relatively new, only 64 cycles and was performing perfectly normally before my departure.
Upon checking the profile the battery is seen, full charge capacity is rated as 4378 mAh, remaining capacity is 21 mAh, charged is shown as connected and rated at 65 watts but not charging.
It is not the charged as I've swapped with other machines and they charge, so it has to be the PowerBook, but is this a simple fix?
I am conversant with the inside of the machine as I've swapped the logic board previously so I'm not averse to stripping the internals out so long as I know what I'm looking for.
    Looking forward to your comments.

    Thanks Allan for the reply.
I've marked it that it helped me, although it did not solved the problem.
By running the PMU reset I eliminated that as a cause. Nothing changed.
Also I changed out the PRAM battery and that didn't help. When I got the Powerbook running it would run all day as long as I didn't let it go to sleep, then it wouldn't restart.
All this time I was waiting for a new main battery to arrive, which it did this morning.
I installed it and left it to see if it would charge and BINGO!
One fully charged batteryh and the PB switches on and off and sleeps and wakes up like it always did.
    Thanks for your help
    Regards
    Peter

  • Posted in wrong topic: Powerbook G4 will not turn on- many failed solutions

I'll preface this with my computers background: It is a 4.5 year old PBG4 running OSX. I used it in school for various projects, photoshop, illustrator, etc. For the past year or so it has basically been used for photos, internet, and basic nothings. I had trouble with the start up a while back and ever since I get really nervous turning it off so I rarely do.
Tonight, I was closing down my windows and one folder window would not close. I left it for quite a while and it was stuck. So I forced it down and attempted to re-start. That was 4 hours ago. Still no start up Earlier in the evening I noticed another strange and possible related error. When my power cord would loosen up the power would drain down to 30 or so minutes and the screen would go black. If I wiggled the cord and touched the mouse pad it would come back on. This has never happen before.
So I've been on this computer researching possible resolutions. I've tried to start on safe mode (holding down Shift), I've tried control + s, control + v, I have also done optioncommand+pr to reset the pram. I have booted off of the install disk and ran the quick hardware check with no problems found and then restarted. I am currently running the extended hardware test (and going to bed). I have tried to boot off of the start up disk but it only takes me to the install window and this is where I have stopped. I've searched around and haven't found an answer as to what installing OSx will do. Will it erase what I have saved and start clean?
I was ironically browsing Black Friday adds just a few hours before this happened and thinking maybe I should get an external hard drive to back my saved .docs, photos, old projects on just incase something like this were to happen!
Oh and a visual of what is happening-- I press power hear a chime with a black screen, a few seconds and the fans start up and the screen turns grey. If I wait a minute or so the screen goes black again and then returns to the grey screen. A few more seconds go by and the broken folder and question mark start to flash. If I have the install disk in and wait another minute or so it will finally catch the disk and start to read it. When I power it down I hold the power button for 10 seconds (I read to do that somewhere tonight) and I even tried to hold it down while starting it which causes it to make an unpleasant loud beep.
I hope someone out there can help with the information I have provided. I should also say (from reading other posts) that this is the correct start up disk. I only have one Mac so no disks to get confused with and I bought it directly from Mac- I am the first and only user/owner of this PBG4.
Lastly, I should mention that I have no idea what any of the above tricks, solutions, or methods mean- I simply followed directions for my symptoms.
    Thanks!
    EDIT:
    One attempted solution:
I followed your instructions- Disc Utility -> Click on the hard drive -> Run First Aid. The response to first aid is:
"Verify permissions for 'Mac OS X Install Disc 1'
    Error: No valid packages
    Permissions verification complete"
I don't know why is says that as the hard drive is selected not the disk.
When I check the info button it says "S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not Supported"
Just to clarify that what I am selecting is correct it is a little hard drive image with text reading "4.0 MATSHITADVE-R UJ-845E"
Thanks for your help! My fingers are crossed that we can pull through this one! I'll do whatever I need to to after it's back on to make sure I don't lose anything!

First, to boot off the install disk, are you holding the C key down as you boot? If not, a boot would take you to the install process.
It sounds like your hard drive has died. However, with the news that your dog helped give it flight across the room, it's _very remotely_ possible that the connector to the hard drive was loosened (It's tough to get the connector off when you're replacing the hard drive, so this is very unlikely). If you want to examine that possibility, use these instructions: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/ Click on your system, then click on hard drive or hard drive replacement. Have yogurt cups, bowls, or an ice cube tray handy to keep track of the screws removed from each step. If the hard drive connector is on solid, you might want to just leave everything there, and get a new hard drive.
You'd want to get a 2.5" parallel ATA hard drive (not a serial ATA or SATA drive, as it won't work). Two sources I've used are http://www.newegg.com and http://www.macsales.com . Seagates come with a 5 year warranty while others are 1 to 3 years. Hitachi and Seagates are popular choices with Western Digital also used. I personally wouldn't get a Toshiba drive, however, others are using them.

  • Powerbook G4 will not print

    I use 2 printers - a Brother HL-P2500, and a Konica Minolta C250 (both thru PC networks).
Both have worked beautifully until this past weekend.
Now, when I try to print, the computer gives me a message reading: "Error while printing" (or a similar message saying "insufficient memory - 50")
I have run a self-test which came up all OK. But still cannot print
    Can anyone help please?
I am a user, not a tech, as you techs can probably tell from this posting.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I suggest you do not have to reinstall your Operating System.
You would be bettwr off trashing anything related to your printers and that includes Mac HD /Library, anything related to your Printers.
You may very well have to reinstall your printer Setup utility that came with the disc's that came with the printers.
It is not clear weather you are using Ethernet, USB, Bonjour, if you have setup to print, wireless, ethernet or usb, and if you are connecting your printer through a router. Have you tried to unplug the printers from the Power Adapters to reset the printers to Factory default settings.
Have you went to the appropriate printer web sites to make sure you have the latest drivers for your printers.
Or are you using OPEN SOURCE drivers, from either of the sites below.
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/
    or
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
    Just a few more ideas.
Last but not least, check with the tech's of the Windows network that your printers are hooked to.

  • My powerbook G4 will not recognise my airport password?

Logging on the powerbook recognises the airport name but when asked for the password which we know is correct it says it is  incorrect why would that be?

    Hello,
Which version of the PowerBook do you own?
If it's the titanium model then it has an Airport card, which would not be compatible with wireless security setting of WAP2, so check your security setting on your wireless router.
If your security settings are WPA or WEP, then try resetting your PowerBook PMU and try again.
To rest the PMU follow this link.

  • PowerBook G4 will not shut down after installing Leopard

Hi - has anyone found shut down problems (or restart for that matter) after installing Leopard. I've got 30Gb of hard drive free on a Powerbook G4 (3 years old).

    No I don't.
Looking around for answers to this one it seems it is a fairly common problem with new Leopard users. One solution (apparently from Apple) was to delete the cache folders in both the user's home folder and in the top-level system folder. I have tried that but no luck yet.
