Powerbook G4 won't boot after 10.4.10 update

Hi,
Looking for help with the following problem. Last week, I updated my Powerbook G4 to 10.4.10 and since then the system fails to boot. The failure may or may not be linked to the update, but the timing is suspicious.
When I attempt to book the system, it hangs with the spinning daisy wheel at the gray screen with the apple logo. It won't boot from the Tiger install DVD; doesn't seem to get as far as looking for the DVD.
If I boot into single user mode and run fsck -fy, the command reports a number of block count errors when checking the catalog file and then fails while a "disk0s3: I/O error. Invalid key length (4, 20821).
I don't want to lose the data in disk if at all possible and I'd like to know;
(a) can this be repaired using a more powerful disk utility such as DiskWarrior?
(b) is this worth taking to the Genuis Bar for further work?

*Invalid key length* indicates a disk directory problem that should be fixable with DiskWarrior. To boot with the install DVD, pop it in, restart, holding down the C key. If that doesn't boot the machine, leave it in, restart, holding down the OPTION key, and see if it shows up when the Startup Manager finishes loading. If so, click on the DVD icon and click the right-hand arrow. The left=hand arrow will search for bootable disks, which it already did.

My Mac Pro won't boot after installing the latest update

Im running the latest OSX on my mac and recenty did a small updated that i believe contain a few security thing and bug fixs but when restarting the machine after the update it would not boot again after the apple logo has appeard apple script is displayed on the screen contain what i think is boot script failing to run. I have been able to boot the system in safe mode. does anyone have and solution for this as i realy don't want to reinstall the OS

The most common cause for "Won't boot after software Update" is Directory Damage that existed before the Update, but was made worse by adding files during the Update.
The most common cure for that Directory Damage problem is to boot in Safe Mode, which takes five minutes to repair the disk, then comes up demanding your username and password, even if you normally auto-login.
Rarely, third-party add-ons are made obsolete by an update. In this case, booting in Safe Mode (with few Apple extensions and NO third-party extensions loaded) works fine, even if normal mode does not work.
Have you tried normal mode again after your Safe Boot?

G4 450 MP won't boot after 10.4.8 update

My main disk is a 160Go on a PCI IED card (acard)
After Software update did its thing, the computer won't boot on this disk.
It displays the apple logo, then nothing (no spinning thing). There are display artifacts (blanck line on top of screen, sometimes the grey background turns blue)
I tried zapping the PRAM, reinstalling the combo update, removing third partry cards to no available.
I tried plugging the disk on the integrated IDE channel (but I know my computer does not support disk larger than 120 Go)
Any one has an idea ?
G4 450 MP Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I verified and repaired permissions on both disks, updated the new system to 10.4.7 and ran Migration Assitant, which, aside from giving wild estimates of time remaining and not copying the Developer folder, did indeed work magnificently. Not going to bother with cloning back to the original drive.

1)Umm, yes, I didn't bother repairing permissions before updating to 10.4.8, but the only way to know if that caused the problem is to try updating the new system. I'm not that curious. I think scb is not impressed with repairing permissions.
2)Removing 3 PCI boards and swapping the processor and then putting it all back together everytime there is a system update is not an option. Besides, if it doesn't work with the 3rd party hardware, then I wouldn't want to bother updating anyway. Next time, I'll try updating on another drive first.

Not sure where to start with this...
Just tried to boot after the latest 10.6.8 update and have the grey screen with the spinning disk.

I would suggest that you do the following as a start:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If the drive is OK then download the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo installer and reinstall the update. See if that resolves your problem.
If the above does not fix the problem then you will need to reinstall Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:

2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

Early 2008 Macbook won't boot after 10.7.5 update?

Updated to 10.7.5, when it rebooted to do the install, there was an error message, and now the machine won't boot. Stuck on grey screen with spinning wheel.... reset PRAM, Disk utility says drive is OK... still no luck. ??

Mac Pro new update won't boot after 10.8.2 Update 1.0

It just stays on the apple screen during boot after entering pw for account.
Its been over 5 min that it just stays in that screen. Anyone else seeing this after doing 10.8.2 Supplemental Update 1.0?

Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

I have had the same problem and have so far (despite the autofsd suggestion) had no success fixing it. This is on a completely clean installation (which booted fine) with the latest updates including 10.5.2 (which doesn't boot at all).
I have installed Mac OS X on external (USB and Firewire) drives before without any problem and I wanted a development environment for some work I am doing on Aperture 2 (so I need 10.5.2) without running the risk of messing with my existing installation of Aperture 1.5.
The drive itself is the very drive the machine came with so that shouldn't be an issue, although it is of course, now in an external (powered) enclosure.
Playing with the autofsd plist (and also renaming /usr/libexec/autofsd) has had no effect.
I'll try the ps suggestion and see what that turns up.

Mac Mini Won't Boot after 2008 008 Security Update

I have 2 mac mini's both identical systems - ran the security update at home - rebooted and noticed the movements of the mouse and the mail application was 1/2 to a second slow/behind - decided to restart - it took 3 restarts and it finally came back and then locked up
I ran Disk Warrior and version 4.0.1 could not fix the problem - version 3.0.3 said it could and replaced the directory - but upon restart it would not boot - I became mesmerized by the spinning dial
I will not run the update at work and had to substitute my titanium at home in the meantime

Mac mini won't boot after 10.6.8 Update

I've recently installed the latest update and now I'm stuck on the grey logo with the spinning wheel.
I've reset the pram etc and when sarting in verbose mode it seems to be stalling at the following stage.
CSRUSBBluetoothHCIController::setupHardware super returned 0
and won't move on from there.
I've unplugged all usbs so all there is plugged in is power and the monitor. Even tried formatting the drive and restoring from time machine to the backup taken before the update.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I was having a similar problem.
When I restarted in 'verbose' mode, it would get as far as:
CSRUSBBluetoothHCIController::setupHardware super returned 0
still waiting for root device
still waiting for root device
... etc...
The same thing happened when I tried to boot from a DiskWarrior DVD, so at that stage I assumed there was a hardware fault.
However, the system would boot into 'safe mode'.
Then I had a completly random stroke of luck:
I plugged in an external USB HD (to get some files off), and it complained that the kext:
/System/Library/Extensions/IOStorageFamily.kext was broken.
So I took a copy (from a friends laptop), installed it, and guess what !!
It worked! The machine now boots happily again.
(although I can't explain why the DiskWarrior DVD failed to boot, but frankly, who cares)

MacBook Pro won't boot after 10.6.8 update.

I completely erased my hard drive, reinstalled Snow Leopard and updated to 10.6.7. I then performed an Apple Hardware Test and verified the disk using disk utility. Both tests were successful. I then updated to 10.6.8 using the combo update and restarted my MacBook Pro. The boot process ran fine until the system locked up on the bright blue screen. No peripherals were connected to the laptop during this process. I powered the laptop down using the power button and turned it on again. This time, I entered verbose mode. The last line of text that I see before the screen turns black is "[ PCI configuration begin ]". Can anyone assist me with this issue?

Might be time to replace the PRAM battery. That's not the normally accessible battery, but it is one that often fails after 4 years.

IBook G4 won't boot after 10.5 software update?

I have a iBook G4 14" 1.42GHZ 768mb of ram which was running fine under 10.4.11. I updated to OS X 10.5.4 via a retail discs and it installed and re-started perfectly. All seemed ok so i ran software update and the installation seemed to go fine. However upon restarting it all i'm getting is the grey Apple screen & logo along with the spinning flower icon below it? If i boot of the installation disc it won't see the hard drive, just the Mac OS X discs? If i reboot holding the "alt" key it shows the discs as macintosh HD but it still hangs at the Apple logo. Disc Utility will also not see the hard drive. The iBook was working fine before this, is it just coincidence that the hard drive has died?
Any thoughts or advice welcome?

Is it possible that the hard drive was nearly full and installation of Leopard has filled it to the point of disastrous failure? It's generally recommended to keep at least 15% of total hard drive space free for smooth operation.
If this is a possibility, do you have access to another Mac with FireWire or a bootable external FireWire hard drive so you can pull some things off the drive to another location in order to free up some hard drive space?

IBook won't boot after 10.4.11 update

Booted G4 iBook after not using for several weeks. Ran Software Update, but Microsoft's ($*&% automatic Office update ran, so I installed that first. Then installed several Apple software updates (QuickTime, iWeb, ... 10.4.11 security).
Restart failed - grey screen with apple and the circle "clock", then blue screen with cursor in upper left corner, every minute or so, the circle clock appears briefly, eventually blank blue screen.
Booted from install disk - ran disk utility - no errors found ("repairs made").
Ran terminal - directories seem normal - tried to boot from there - repeated crashes crash file written to ../Library/Logs/CrashRegister/Loginwindow.crash.log

Hi Chuper2, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this, here's the scoop...
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...

X1 carbon 20A7 won't boot after 1.13 BIOS update, ecreen also corrupted.

After updating the BIOS to 1.13 the X1 refuses to boot . After several attempts to diagnose the problem (trying to boot under legacy and uefi with various rescue pen drives) I doing a restore with the recovery media (created using the inbuilt software) but that didn't help, it just wiped my partitions and reinstalled windows (I'm assuming since I have no way to check at this point) but still refuses to boot. I can boot the windows rescue thumb drive under legacy though. After the update the screen was also corrupted, picture here http://i.imgur.com/ScfD1Uz.jpg.
At this point I'm not sure what to do anymore, it seems that the BIOS update failed in some way or somehow broke something.

this seems to have caused uneven lighting in the LED display, very strange problem. You may need to get warranty service on it.
