PowerBook G4s' AirPort Extreme Cards-b or g?

How can I tell if the built-in AirPort Extreme cards on my PowerBook G4s (a 2 1/2 year-old 15" and two 12" PBs under two years old) have 802.11g or not? System Monitor does not indicate which; it only shows the Wireless Card Firmware Version: 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18).

Tesserax,
Thanks for the clarification and the specifications resource page.
(I have a house full of PBs--all post-2005. My next venture is going to be a wireless home network, and I wanted to make sure whether I had mixed Airport standards to deal with or, as it turns out, not.)

  • Airport Extreme card for Powerbook G4 12"

I want to get an Airport Extreme card for my 12" Powerbook, however, am a little confused as to which one will work with it. I am currently running a 867Mhz PowerPC system. I have seen two part numbers for the Airport Extreme card, A1026 and A1027. I was hoping that someone might be able to clarify the correct one I need, thanks.

behappysomeday, Welcome to the discussion area!
Those cards are both the same thing. Either one will work.

  • Airport Extreme Cards for Powerbook Ti

So, why noy make an internal airport extreme card for the Ti Powerbooks? It's not like theyre that old of a model. and if other companys can make em for external use why cant Apple do this?
Hopefully someone at Apple reads this. Ive been an avid supporter of Apple comps and its not like customers such as myself wouldnt actually buy these if they were to release them. Think about it....every titanium power book user would prolly run out and re-buy the already installed cards all over again. Makes sense to me.

It may make sense to you, Wil, but not many people nowadays are investing in hardware enhancements for their three-and-four-year-old Tibooks. And with other manufacturers producing cards that can be installed in a Tibook and moved on to the next laptop without ever opening up the Tibook, and offering (in many cases) far better wireless range than the built-in Airport antenna can offer, Apple would face tough competition for the few customers who might be interested in such a product.

  • Can i use an airport extreme card in a powerbook 400MHz ?

i have an older powerbook 400MHz which is second hand and i have no manual for it. does anyone know if i can install an airport extreme card?

No you can not use an AirPort Extreme card with your PowerBook.
Your PowerBook G4 400 MHz requires the original AirPort card.

  • Powerbook will not startup with airport extreme card installed

I have a 2 year old powerbook using 10.3.9 an djust of late when my airport card is in, The computer just sends me to the open Firmware right after i turn it on.when i type mac-boot it comes up with a broken folder icon. however when i take my card out i dont have a problem. is there a wa i can ues my computer and the airport at the same time? what do you think i should do.

it is a 867 mhz g4 with 256 mb ddr ram. 40 gb hd and
a combo drive. i hope that is helpfull.
This PowerBook requires the original Airport card, you can not use the Airport Extreme card in that PowerBook, any attempt to do so could result in damage to both the card and the PowerBook.
Either change the AE card for an original Airport or use a third party 802.11g card in the cardbus slot.

  • Airport Extreme Card

I couldn't find an answer so here is my post.
I bought an Airport Extreme card from a guy and can't get it to work in both an iMac G5 and an eMac G4. It doesn't show up in the System Profiler. The guy claims it only works with older Apple Powerbook IBM chip laptops. From what I have read, Airport Extreme cards work with any mac with an Airport Extreme port.
I need some clarity on who is right.
    Card info:
    Model no. A1026
    EMC no. 1951
if you need more info let me know, and thank you anyone that replies.

A A1026 AirPort Extreme card should work with your iMac G5 and the later eMac G4s.
It will not work with any of the Intel based Macs.

  • AirPort Extreme Card not being recognized

I installed an AirPort Extreme Card into my powerbook G4 15" laptop. I also installed the software from the CD that came with the card. Everything went just like the instructions set out. When I start my computer and go into the system profiler it doesn't show that I have an airport card installed. Also if I launch the AirPort Setup Assistant it claims I have no card installed.
How can I determine the card is installed correctly and working?

Which PowerBook G4 do you have?
Some PowerBook G4s require the original AirPort card.
Others require the AirPort Extreme card.

  • What is the difference between the Airport Extreme Cards A-1026 & A1027?

I need to get an Airport Extreme Card for my for my G4, 1.25, 800 FW, MDD.
I am unfortunatly very much on a budget. I am therefore, shopping eBay. I am seeing two different model Airport Extreme Cards which are apparently specified for my Mac. They are the A 1026 and the A 1027.
What is the difference between the two cards.
If it helps, the exact specs for my ubnit are here

  • PowerBook G4 Airport Extreme b/g need upgrade to N. Is it possible

I have a problem trying to upgrade the Airport Extreme on this PowerBook G4. Its running 10.5.8 and has a PowerPC processor. The Airport came with the machine.
Its currently suggesting its capable of working on B and G networks. I found this info in the Network Utils. After I upgraded the router to the Linksys WRT320N and set it to 5Ghz it does want to play ball.
Also got an iMac G4 10.4 (retro dome) that can't connect either.
Apparently this N 5Ghz is the future. According to the rest of us, so is wireless. I currently have a £140 wireless router with a bunch of wires crawling across the floor from it. PlayStation 3 can't cope with it either!
The Intel MacBook works fine although Safari had some issues with updating the routers firmware via the web browser interface.
I believe that apple had issued some updates for the Airport a short time ago and figured that this would go across the board with all their Airport Extreme cards. Does anyone have any insight, if or when this might happen before I go off and buy hundreds of wireless USB adapters to find the one that works with these Macs?
Any help here would be greatly appreciated...

Your older equipment cannot operate wirelessly in the 5 GHz band. A firmware update cannot supply the needed hardware upgrade.
You would seem to have two options:
    1) Reconfigure your Wi-Fi equipment to support 802.11g (2.4 GHz).
    2) Buy a USB 802.11n adapter for each of your old devices. It shouldn't be hard to determine which ones will work with your Macs. Whatever you buy, be sure that it works with the USB ports (USB 1.1 vs. USB 2.0).

  • Using Powermac G5 as a Base Station w/Airport Extreme Card...

Hello. Can anyone tell me if I am able to install an Airport Extreme card into my Powermac G5 and use it as a virtual base station to share the internet and network with my Powerbook (which has an Airport card)?
I have DSL going to my G5 via ethernet, and would like to share it wirelessly with my Powerbook. The cheapest way, if it works, would be to purchase an Airport Extreme card and install it into my G5. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

    Yes it's possible:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107484
The down side is that the G5 has to be on for it to work and the setting doesn't stick between restarts or sleeping.

  • Refurbished AIrport Extreme Card problems

So i ordered a refurbished airport extreme card for my 12 inch powerbook g4. i installed the card in the right place and heard the click it is supposed to make, i fold up the little door, put the battery back in and reset my computer, after having installed the softwear but my computer doesn't pick up that i have an airport card. i've messed with it a lot, trying to see if i put it in wrong and it seems to be right but the computer still doesn't pick it up. what am i doing wrong?

    Sometimes the antenna wire or main circuit (or both) are not fully seated;
even if they seem like they should be, so about all you can do is try again
and see if something less than brutal force can get a connection; or if you
have any nearby Apple specialist, call and see if you can get some help.
They could also try another card in that slot, as a form of troubleshooting.
If the computer has an extended warranty, you could call AppleCare
support; if there is a problem in the computer (where card integrates w/ logicboard)
that would require a repair or replacement if damage exists.
Hopefully another go at fitting the card and checking the antenna wire
will give you wi-fi access. The issue sounds like it's physical contact.

  • Dead Airport Extreme card?

For the last three days I have had issues with my G5 dual 2GHz and OS X 10.4.2, the latest updates to Airport software and firmware.
The signal strength meter in the menu bar or in Internet Connect is greyed out and the connection cannot be made -- eventually it gets to the point where the G5 cannot even remember any of my precvious connections. The Macwireless.com widget shows the connection and signal strength as bouncing from 0 to about 70% for all connections that are still recognized, with each location bouncing from the top of the list to the bottom and then sometimes disappearing altogether. After a short while the locations don't reappear... Once they're gone, they're pretty much gone without a trace (Airport Admin either cannot connect to the Airport, telling me an error occurred while trying to access it, or it doesn't see anything to get an error message from).
My G4 sits right next to the G5 and has shown no problems. Strangely, after a full day trying to troubleshoot this, the G5 started up today at full signal strength -- I'm using it now to write this message! Nothing has changed on this machine in the past week, except for me trying to get the Airport Extreme Card to function as it had for the month or two I've had it. Yesterday I lost connection altogether -- neither restarting the Mac nor a full shut down, wait a minute or two, restart would restore my connection. At one point, I shut down the machine for about an hour while I reseated the AE Card and let the computer become room temp (roughly 70 F). Still no go...
After eliminating all the variables I could think of, I've come to the conclusion that the Airport card is probably bad -- possibly malfunctioning with heat build-up (?). Problem is, how do I show this problem to a tech? Especially since it's a half-hour drive to the closest Apple store and longer to a third-party Apple repair shop. And knowing that once it's been off for a while and is on a workbench, it will behave like all intermittently faulty equipment and work perfectly. :-/
If anyone has trouble shooting suggestions, or can help me determine for sure that the card is the problem, please help!

    Hi Julia,
Well, the card may have problems too, but I now think there's a software problem as others have suggested. It's odd because everything seemed fine for some time after applying the updates, so it appeared as if the card was bad or going bad. For me, I spent three days trying everything I could, including removing and re-seating the card, antenna wire and antenna, trying various configurations, resetting the Airport itself and so on. All to no avail.
On the last day, I had the strangest situation, where Mail could not see the Airport and could connect to nothing, but Safari was able to access the Internet! I used Safari to access sites I hadn't visited in months just to be sure I wasn't seeing cached versions of the pages... Eventually though, Safari lost contact, and that was it for the day.
After all that, the next day I turned on the Mac to see a solid connection that's been stable ever since except for the incident in my previous post where the Airport widgets knocked the connection out. Turning off those Widgets and closing Dashboard brought the connection back up immediately -- I haven't tried them again, and probably won't!.
Once I had the solid connection, I used Onyx to repair permissions, optimise the System and to empty the Network cache. I also deleted the various Locations I'd set up in the Network Preferences to get it back to just the one connection to choose from. If you're comfortable with Onyx (or Cocktail or one of the other utilities) you could try at least clearing the cache(s) and repairing permissions.
Have you tried a complete shut down and leaving the computer off overnight? Do you have anything set to open on startup that may try to connect with the Internet (like Mail or Safari)? Try removng them from your Startup Items (you can do this from the Dock -- click and hold on the icon and a mini menu should pop up with that option).
Have you looked at the info in System Profiler, and does it show the Airport card? (you can access System Profiler from the About This Mac item in the Apple Menu and clicking the button: More Info...) The card should show up under Network>Airpport Card.
Since you have a Powerbook, you have the option to take your computer to an Apple tech (Apple Genius at an Apple store, or to a dealer with a repair crew) and have them troubleshoot it. My guess is they'll end up reinstalling your OS and/or replacing the card... My G5 is far too heavy for me to throw it in the car -- and I found out the hard way yesterday that my computer is just 2 weeks out of warranty, so I'm ineligible for AppleCare. grrr... (my fault, but grrr...)
Let us know if anything good happens -- best of luck!

  • PB does not boot UNLESS I remove Airport Extreme Card

My 15" PowerBook G4 will not boot unless I remove the Airport Extreme Card. I doubt there is a problem with the card itself. Could it be an issue related to the internal components that the card plugs in to? I read on another forum that my issue could be a faulty connection between the card and the logic board (part no.821-0352-A).

Thanks for your reply, i totally agree and i have never had a issue with toshiba warranties before usually they are very good and i reccomend toshiba aftersales service to all our clients.
My only concern is that they didnt check it properly last time and if they dont find a fault this time they will be charging me 80 plus vat to get my laptop back according to the toshiba rep. This is not a fault that happens during normal operation and takes hours to replicate if they dont then they wont find the fault.
Fingers crossed they find it this time otherwise i may have a battle on my hands.

  • External  signal booster for Airport extreme card

I'm trying to find a solution to boosting the signal receiving capabilities of my Apple 15" Powerbook G4 with an Airport Extreme Card.
I live in an area that receives several WiFi non-encrypted signals, which my Airport can detect (weakly), but I need to boost the signal that the airport receives.
Let me make this clear, I am not attached, or connected to ANY router, or DSL system, I am only receiving open WiFi signals.
I need to find a signal booster, or directional antenna. (I’d rather not crack open the Power Book to attach the hardware).
I’ve looked at several 3rd party options i.e. Linksys, Netgear, Hawkings, D-link, most do not support Mac ( so often)
I currently use a Hawking Tech directional PCI wireless card 802.11 B/G mixed mode. It works well enough with Mac, but it is often buggy, and yes I do turn of Airport when I use it. But I’d rather use the built in Airport with an external booster. I’m open to suggestions, Mac or 3rd Party, though the ‘Pringles can’ doesn’t work. thanks

  • Installing Airport Extreme card prevents my computer from turning on again

I have a 867MHz 12" Powerbook and I tried to install an airport extreme card that I bought on eBay. After it was installed, my computer would not even turn on. I thought it might be just my computer, but then I tried it in my Powermac G5 and it did the same thing. Perhaps I got ripped off? Any help?

Yeah, I made sure that I did that. It is odd that the machine won't even turn on with the card installed. I don't see how it could affect the power.
