PowerBook gets HOT!

For some time now I've noticed that my computer gets very hot with pretty standard use. Last year it got hot enough that I had to replace one of my two RAM memory slots. I eventually bought a cooling pad that works reasonably well, but it's still getting very warm. I'm concerned about it again now because I'd like to pass this computer on to a family member, but I'm worried that the problem will continue and even get worse.
I checked the battery model and serial number, and it's not on the recall list. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, if it will cause serious problems (other than red legs after a car ride with it on your lap), and if anything can be done? Thanks.
PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I replaced the hard drive on Friday night with a 120GB Maxtor unit. I pushed the power switch and it purred sweetly back into life. Reinstalled Tiger without any problems. It is running quiter and cooler than ever before and seems really settled again even when i leave it for an hour or two.
One thing i noticed was when the old hard drive was giving problems the SMART status said the disk was ok even after i ran disk repair. However after I erased the hard drive and reinstalled Tiger the SMART staus went immediately to big red letters telling me disk failure was immenent and I should start panicing. Strange that
Thanks for all your help, it has been appreicted greatly

  • How use Powerbook G4 as DVD player without it getting hot?

Suggestions please. Began to use older PowerBook G4 as a portable 15" DVD player. The bottom became almost hot to the touch so I hesitate
to continue watching DVDs until I know why so much heat is being generated. Might it have one of the older batteries that should be replaced?
    Thank you very much. VG

Playing any video regardless of source is one of the most processor-intensive tasks you can throw at a computer. The demands on the CPU and the graphics processor are high. I'm reasonable sure the heating you see is normal.
The case bottom is part of the heat dissipation system and is designed to get hot so air moving under the case takes away the heat. Apple recommends not using their notebook models in your lap without a lapboard because that blocks one of the main cooling systems.
Are you using an external monitor with the Powerbook's lid closed (clamshell more)?  If so, don't close the lid on the PowerBook; heat also escapes from the keyboard area
Notebooks in general run hot due to limited space inside that restricts the size fans that can be used. It's important to know that what "feels" hot is not necessarily dangerous to he computer. You need to get a temp monitoring utility to see actual numbers. Most notebooks will do a safety shutdown if the internal temps approach 100°C/212°F.
I like this free temp monitor:

  • All this talk about HEAT, my PowerBook G4 1.25GHZ gets hot!

I have ordered a new MBP 2.16GHZ 1GB 120HD but since I heard all the talk about heat I started monitoring my Powerbook G4 1.25GHZ and you know what, it gets hot!
I downloaded a widget from the Apple site and after about 4-5 hours of just regular web surfing and iTunes I had a CPU bottomside temp of 136F! It was hot between the F keys and the screen almost too hot to touch. I have owned this machine for three years and have never noticed it!
I am somewhat relieved as I think that I have been worried about something that has always been there and never affected my Mac experience before. Obviously this new Mac has a much faster CPU inside so I expect it will get at least as hot. I am not saying that the heat is normal it's just nothing new.
Anyone else noticed this since they started reading about it?

I really do wonder about these 2.16 models. I had a 2.16 on loan while my 2 GHz version was being repaired and it ran warm, but nowhere near the temperatures of the 2 GHz.
Anyway, I got the 2 GHz back and two weeks later the battery started to swell. Now they are upgrading me to the flagship model for free; all heat related issues BTW.
I understand the loyalty and need to defend Apple, but when you run a business you tend to feel a little differently I guess. Glad to hear your not experiancing problems.

  • Powerbook G4 getting HOT under the collar...

I have a PB G4 1GHz 15" Aluminum, it's about 4 years old now, and for some time, it has been getting hotter and hotter. I use Temp Monitor to watch the temp on the processor and I notice that whenever it reaches around 140 degrees F, the whole computer freezes, and I can't do anything except do a force shut-down. Once it cools down, it works fine again, until the temp goes back up. It happens a lot when I play games, or import lots of photos in iPhoto, basically anything that uses the processor rather heavily. It didn't used to do that, and it didn't used to get that hot, either. I have had it apart and I've checked the fans, they are clean, the exhaust fins are clean, and the fans do run, as I can hear them, but maybe they are slowing down? Or is it just that the processor is getting old, or I just don't know... Any opinions or ideas???

Your Energy Saver settings, under System Preferences, allows for the CPU performance to be set to Automatic, Reduced, or Highest.
Possibly, with the increased graphics requirement and a change in one of these settings, could put you over the edge.
It is not a good idea to continually force a shut-down like that, imo, and you will be better served by quitting things you don't need (like the temp monitor which increases the load by itself) , reducing your settings, and elevating the book (especially during the summer months) to allow the dissiapation to work.
They will get hot doing what you describe.

  • Help? Powerbook gets power but won't start

I have a 1.5 GHz. 12" Powerbook Al (with empty RAM slot) that (reportedly) had a hard drive failure (blinking folder icon at boot)and so the HD was removed and the PB left in storage for approx. 6 months. Now, I am trying to resuscitate this PB and when I plug in the AC adapter, the charge status ring glows green. When I open the lid, it momentarily turns to amber. Pressing the Power button doesn't start the Powerbook. No fan noise, LCD lighting, etc. Battery LED status shows 2 LEDs green when button is pressed. I have tried resetting the PMU repeatedly and tried starting without the battery to no avail. Any suggestions on what other troubleshooting steps I should try? If this is a hardware failure, any idea of what parts may be suspect?
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.
    /Tim Allison

Was this problem solved elsewhere? I'm surprised there was no response at all here. I'm having something pretty similar with my Al-Powerbook G4 15" FW800 (1.25gHz). Every so often, and I think only when it is stone-cold, it will start, although generally not recognize my AirPort card. Otherwise, it gives the startup tone, I can hear a bit of a grunt from the hard drive, and then a tiny bit of motion of some sort, and then nothing. There's a bit of ambient noise from inside when this is going on which I believe to be the disk spinning, but the heads aren't doing anything.
I have tried all the usual recommended steps (resetting PRAM, resetting PMU), can't get it to start at all now. There's a CD in the tray which when I hit the power button will start to spin, but then doesn't do anything. Again, it doesn't really seem to be reading the disk, and I get nothing on the screen at all at any time. It's completely black. Eventually (a couple of minutes) the drive(s) stop spinning, but it continues to draw power and gets hot.
    Any thoughts?

  • Iphone 4s battery draining very fast and phone getting hot - downloaded ios 6 about 2 weeks back

my iphone 4S gets discharged in few hours - started doing this 2 days back
    I downloaded ios6 about 2 weeks back
    Phone getting hot too
battery drains even without using the phone- and phone becomes hot
have tried turning it completely off and restarting it but still battery draining problem persists
    please guide

I final piece for me in the jigsaw following on from this
    http://www.care4pcs.co.uk/2012/10/how-to-be-happy-gmail-user-on-iphone-or.html
is to turn off wifi when you do not need it. When I leave the house I turn off wifi, because the majority of the times when my iPhone has got very hot and crashed is when I am away from home. I suspect that if the iPhone is in the vicinity of public wifi (wheather secure or not secure) it will try and connect, even if you have 'automatically join known networks' set to off. This is easy of course if you have an unlimited data contract for your iPhone. I may be wrong, but it is working for me. It makes sense for me because it is another way of reducing the work the processor (and battery) has to do and therefore reduces the chance of overheating.
Having said that, I never had this problem with my iPhone 4. I now have a 4S.
Try it. Hope it works for you.

  • Iphone 4 battery draining quick getting hot till hours

    Hi there,
I got a problem with my iPhone. I restored it Yesterday via iCloud and today the battery is draining very quick and its getting hot. No background apps running! I got iStat, it says the workload is always at ~3. A reboot doesn't help. Hopefully this bug should have been invenstigated by an apple engineer.

There was a problem with a CalDAV server. It always trying connecting to it. Then dataaccessd crashed. And connected again and crashed, and so one....  After deleting the account and readded (with the same informations) the iPhone's running normal again.

  • I am having problems with my Mac Book Pro Retina locking up after updating from Lion to Maverick.  I was having no trouble until I did the upgrade, and now it is locking up, freezing after about 5 minutes, and getting hot.  Any suggestions?

A while back I had an upgrade available to me.  I had Lion when I bought this Pro.  The upgrade is Maverick.  After downloading and installing the upgrade, my computer started freezing while doing anything.  I might not get this completely written before it freezes.  The keyboard is getting hot, and I have to use the power button to turn it off.  After it has sat for at least 10 minutes, I can turn it back on.  I might be able to do some work for 5 minutes, or up to 30 minutes before it freezes again.  Some of my programs are not working, either.
I would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have, or even go back to Lion, if I can figure out how to.
    Thanks.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My iPhone 5 iOS 7.0.4 still gets hot and drains battery with everything but cellular turned off.  What to do?

Have a new iPhone bought in late July 2013.  It had zero heating issues and battery issues until the past week (Nov. 2013).  Now, the iPhone gets hot to the touch and the battery drains within 2 to 3 hours, EVEN AFTER I HAVE DISABLED ALMOST EVERY FEATURE OF THE iPHONE.
This iPhone has iOS 7.0.4, installed within last 36 hours.  I then erased the entire iPhone and restarted it as a New iPhone.  Then I went in and turned off everything in the way of Settings that permit disabling.  All notifications, spotlight searches, application updating, accessibility features, push features, location services, etc. were turned off or disabled.  Brightness is set to Auto.  Don't use the iCloud.
After doing all of that, which essentially rendered this iPhone just a clunky old cell phone, not even using WiFi, I connected to iTunes on my computer and restored my backed up apps, photos.
After the Restore, I went back into settings and made certain that, again, all notifications, app services, location services, updatings, etc. were disabled, still.
    The problem persists.
It seems the only solution is to get rid of all my Apps and never use WiFi, or iCloud, or Mail.  That is unacceptable.
Does anyone have a solution, besides my calling on the warranty on this phone?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the problem continues, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

The iPod touch 5 battery won't charge, the iPod battery gets hot and doesn't turn on...  What is wrong?  Can photos and data be retrieved?

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. I suspect a hardware problem  due to the hotness. If iTunes can't see the iPod then uor only hope if to contact a data recovery company for getting data off the iPod. If you have an iPod backup you can restore another iPod, iPhone or iPad from the backup to get the data that was in the backup

  • IPhone 4s Getting Hot for no reason and wifi not working help?

The otherday my phone was in my pocket and I could feel it getting hot, so I pulled it out of my pocket and noticed it was a lot hotter than it should be, after noticing this I noticed that my wifi was not connected so I checked SETTINGS<WIFI and there was no connections, the little icon just kept spinning and spinning, so then I toggeled it off and on, no luck, turn airplane mode on and off still no luck, I even toggled of my mobile data no luck.
I preformed a reboot, (held both lock and home button together) and checked again, NOTHING.
I then turnt it off for 10 mins ( held lock button slid red icon across) and the phone got colder and then the wifi started working again.
then last night it did it again, I have taken the phone out of its case and changed the charger(just incase these were affected it), I then tried everything again, it helped but not for long, tonight it has done the same thing so I thought nothing of it, il just do what I had previously done,
BUT NO! not even resetting network settings helped, neither did erasing all data, neither did placing the phone into restore mode, restoring via itunes and then setting the phone up as new, just incase the backups contained software glitches causing the wifi not to work.
I have been screen shotting the phone in and out of charge showing no wifi connections are showing for proof for when I take it to the apple store thursday (everyother day was fully booked).
Being that my phone still is covered by apple care, Ive got proof that it is defective/tempermental(incase it starts working again and then stops) and obviously they can have a look at it, take it apart or whatever i dont care I want it fixed! but will they replace it?(the whole phone) and also will it be for free as ive still got apple care warrenty and it is hardware problems?
ALSO i never had any problems with 5.1.1 so I hope if i get a replacment it will be 5.1.1 as I wont update until 6.0.1 is stable enough

*also, i have just reset all settings again and my wifi connections have appeared! this is taking the P*** now apple sort it out!

  • My battery is getting drained in two hours after getting hot. What's the solution?

My battery is getting drained in two hours after getting hot. What's the solution?

Do you mean your iPhone was exposed to high temperature and now the battey life is very short?  If so, take it to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs check the battery and see if it needs to be replaced.  Lithium-Ion batteries are very sensitive to high temperature so there may be damage to your battery if it got very hot.

  • My Iphone gets hot and wont hold a charge for more than 8 hrs

My Iphone 5c gets hot even when i dont have a protective case on it but it is worse when it is charging. The battery will only hold a charge for at most 8hrs, i have taken it into the store and they always say nothing is wrong with it. I find that hard to believe since my old iphone that was 2 years old lasted longer. I have already turned my backlight down and turned off notifications. Any ideas?

Charging has always been recommended without an iOS device in a case...many of those do not allow heat to dissipate.
Turn down screen brightness, turn off things you don't need, like Bluetooth if not being used, change the Mail push timing so it is less frequent...all things that use energy should be stretched out to save battery time.

Your phone should not get hot.  Bring it in to Apple for evaluation.  You may have a defective battery.
