Powerbook HD Failure... HELP PLEASE!

I've had a bad problem with my HD, here is the story:
I was on Safari & iTunes & Adium at the same time. For some reason, the music I was playing would go on and off, and I started getting the multicolored wheel. Sounded also like the drive was working hard... like there was an invisible program running (but there wasnt). I figured I would reboot, and the problem would stop.
So on the reboot, my powerbook became really really slow. The startup was really long (15mins)and I would say 20x the normal speed at which it usually worked. Opening the Finder window to run backup took like 5 mins. I tried backing up onto my Firewire disk, but it froze during unfortunately.
I ran the Install CD, used the disk utility and checked. The Verification failed and so did the repair. The SMART check also fails. My computer not cannot recognize the harddrive and I can only run through my firewire disk & CD. But I realized that through the portable hard drive, the system runs much faster than it originally did on my Hard Disk.
I never heard and strange sounds or ticks. The only thing I heard was that it sounded like my drive was working really hard. Or copying files, or fragmenting, etc.
What I'm most worried about is data recovery since I havnt done an update in a while. If this is a software related problem, will I lose my data? What could it be? Or is it a hardware related problem?

edit: I did a hardware test and there was an error detected. But the hard drive was actually scanning for the error.. so I guess the drive isnt DEAD.

I'm a little confused. You say that your computer will not detect the internal hard drive (and was showing all the symptoms of a failing/failed drive) and then a hardware test detected an error.
Finally you said "the hard drive was actually scanning for the error..." Can you clarify this? How is the hard drive able to 'scan for the error' if it cannot be recognised/booted? What are you using to do this particular scan?
Generally drive failures with the symptoms you describe will not be software related and ultimately the drive will need replacing. However it is quite possible for the drive to 'seemingly' be alright again for a period of time (this can be anything from a few days to, potentially, a few months) - but will then fail completely, and probably without any further warning.
Anyway, jumping a little further ahead, if you are going to attempt some form of data recovery yourself then the application you will need is Data Rescue as well as an external FireWire drive with plenty of free capacity for DR's temporary files whilst it is attempting to recover your data.
The demo on Prosoft's website will allow you to scan your drive but will only permit the recovery of one file per session. Hopefully this will be enough for you to gauge whether there's any hope of recovery (and if you need to purchase the full product).

  • G4 powerbook - Kernal Panic Help please...

    It would seem reading through the posts that I have a Kernal Panic as my powerbook is showing all the signs of this problem.
    I usually only use my powerbook for working, incase anything like this ever happens, but I was browsing through the games and screensavers on mac downloads and I downloaded Ifish screensaver which required something called GROWL and a widget game called MACPINBALL which also required a download and a restart straight after installation, subsequently the Panic problem started.
    The Mac will not boot up for very long but I managed to trash the games and the growl application, however I think that maybe the MACPINBALL widget installed something that may be causing the problem, any ideas what this could be?
    I am away from home visiting family at the moment so I do not have my Apple install disks but I really need the laptop to be working so can anyone offer me any advice? any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
    No I do not have any external devices attached and I have managed to get into disk utility to repair the permissions, since doing this I have restarted in safe mode and It woked ok without getting the restart message for approx 15 mins. I then restarted it normally and I got the restart message straight away, I restarted and then it didnt even boot, it just made a loud and worrying whirring noise, so I have turned it off!

  • X6 USB Connection failure HELP PLEASE :(

    Hi all i'm new here, i've just bought a Nokia X6 16GB, and upon plugging it into the pc via usb, the device has no response, I have tried all settings on the device, e.g. pc suite, and mass storage, and ask upon connection, but when plugging the cable into the phone it doesn't respond, e.g it does not show you usb menu, to select which way to connect to the pc.
    And the pc doesn't respond either, only recognizing the phone, as an unknown device, I have tried all of nokia's software, inc the pc suite setup, I have tried uninstalling all the software, and reinstalling, with no luck, my pc is one I have built myself running win xp 64bit pro. I have tried 2 other pc's running win vista 32bit, and they won't even show the phone in device manager, like my pc.
    So i'm basically wanting to know what is wrong with my phone?? Is it a problem with the handset, or usb cable, or the 3 computers I have tried?
    I have only just recived the handset from orange, so I can return it if it is a problem with the handset..

    As you said above, yes, I did find OC4J config issue & EM Config issue and resolved them. But still I couldn't get my DBConsole started.
    Yes, I was able to drop DBConsole<sid> service using 'emca' repository drop. But, when I started recreating repository for DBConsole service, I wasn't able to do it. I tried several times but in vain.

  • When I try to update I get an U44M1I210 error message, "Unable to extract the downloaded files" - help please, applies to latest Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop CC

    When I try to do a CC update I get an U44M1I210 error message, "Update failed - Unable to extract the downloaded files. Press retry to download again. (U44M1I210)" - help please - re-downloading makes no difference, applies to latest Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop CC, others seemed to update without problems. I can see the disk image files in AAMUpdater folder but they will not open and come up with "couldn't be opened - resource busy" message.

    Yes Jeff, I did all those several times to no avail.
    I've included a small error snippet from two installs here. In Creative Cloud when updating the Apps, all 3 get to 50%, then the failure occurs. Retrying starts at 50% and fails the same way each time.
    This first one is a segment from the Indesign updater - I have always had the all hard drive folders with read and write privileges allowed and I checked again, this is still the case so I do not know why this particular error message is arising. The second snippet if from the Illustrator update.

  • Help Please. Lost my music Ext Hard Drive.Using my Back Up on a new Hard Drive. Itunes cant fins songs

    HI there, i need some help please .....
    I had a hard drive failure, external one, the i use to have all my music collection ( 550 gigas of music )
    I got a new external HD and put there all the music the i had it back it up, .... same folders name, same HD name ... and i get The song “Point 0” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?
    Under itunes preferences i uncheck always " copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library "
    Becouse i work with music, i created for many years playlist and also rate songs, info the i dont wanna lose, and it will be really really hard to re load all the tracks manually back agein, if i just drag my music folder on the eternal HD to itunes agein ......
    My question is, why itunes wont see my music if everything its under the same folders, and folders names .. ( all my music was backed up as it was ), i just put it back on a new HD ..... how can i fix this keeping in mind the i really need to keep all my playlist songs, and raiting tags ??

    Thank you for your time and help guys,.... to check the path i use to have, i select a song with the ! mark, and comand I  to get hte info and inone of the info tabs, you can see where the file was located at,... and i realice i had a missing space in the folder name where my music was. Made the change, restarted itunes and the problem was fixed.

    Hi everyone. I under the direction of others bought an 60GB Powerbook Hard Drive 5400RPM HItachi upgrade from powerbookmedic.com. I bought my powerbook in early 2001 and when I took it apart and proceeded to load in the new hard drive I noticed that the new one did not have connector pins to hook up to the flex cable on the hard drive. Now am I am I missing something here or am I just a moron? I am really frustrated because the model I bought says that it fits with all Powerbook Titanium models. What am I missing? Help please!!!!!!!!!

    So you removed the old drive, you detached the short flex cable from it, and now you find nothing on the new drive to connect the cable to? Am I understanding correctly?
    If so, is it possible that the connector on the new drive is covered with some sort of temporary shield to protect it during packing, shipping and handling? If it is, the shield should come off if you pull it in the same direction you pulled the flex cable to detach it from your old drive.
    I'm tempted to say you are surely missing something. For Hitachi to have shipped a drive that has no cable connector seems about as likely as for Toyota to have shipped a car with no tires installed, but I suppose anything is (barely) possible.

    I have used Azure managed Cache (Basic tier) in my Web App deployed on cloud service.

    You should add retry logic in case of retriable exceptions. If the retries fail as well you should reset the DataCacheFactory as suggested in this link.

  • Blast speed is currently 2 Mbps/9 Mbps on the Comcast Speed Test. Help please!

    I've had the Blast service for quite some time, and have noticed painfully slow internet browsing for the last couple of months. I mean...pull-my-hair-out-slow.  I just did a Comcast speed test and the results were 2.31 Mpbs and 9.01 Mpbs. Um....that would explain things. But not really... as I'd love to see the speeds I'm supposed to have. Even double digits would be nice! I'm trying to run ShaperProbe but I get the error "Servers are busy. Try again later."     ShaperProbe has not been usable for some time, unfortunately. Check to see if Comcast is reporting an outage for your area by logging in to https://customer.xfinity.com/Secure/MyServices/ or by checking the voice response system at 1-800-Comcast.
    If no outage is reported, see Connection Troubleshooting Tips. If you want to troubleshoot this yourself and still need help, please provide Information Requested for Connection-Related Posts.
    If you are using Wifi it's best to switch to an Ethernet connection if possible while measuring speed and checking the reliability of your connection to Comcast.

    My computer won't start up, when I click the start up button the light comes only once, sounds click (once) and that's it, no power up.
    Because of the age, I knew that the battery could be the reason, so I ordered the exact same battery and replaced it today (following the instructions very carefully). Nothing changed. Then I read about the button for resetting the power management (the one below the ram memory), did that too...and nothing.
    I read the manual, it talks about recently installed components (which I have not) and explains the meaning of the numbers of blinks the power light makes with this type of failure, 2 blinks=ram memory, 3 blinks...4 blinks..more than 5 blinks= take it to service.
    If somebody could please help me, I would really appreciate

    I had similar problems with my G5 2ghz dual PPC. Mine would turn on, sometimes the startup chime would sound, sometimes not. The fans would run and continue to run faster and faster until I shut it off.
    The red light comes on by the way, when the internal plastic shield is not installed or seated correctly.
    Anyway, I determined after fooling with the machine for several hours that the symptoms pointed to the video card so, on a hunch, I grabbed a hair drier, pulled the video card and warmed up the video card with the drier. Then reinstalled the video card, hooked up the monitor and hit the power button. Bingo, the machine booted normally. BUT, it would intermittently hang or act odd while running so, I ordered a replacement video card. Installed it and the problem never returned. Sadly someone stole the machine last month but it was in perfect working order at the time:(
