PowerBook internal audio in jack...

My powerbook audio in jack produces an extremely low line level in GB when I plug in my guitar directly. Is this normal?? I just wanna plug directly in to the machine seeing as I don't have money right now to afford myself an audio interface and preamp...what's the catch...? is there some setting I must change to acheive a higher signal??
help!! please!!

Thank you...I am at school right now and cannot test your suggestion...but I am sure that it will work because my preference was set to internal mic, not line in...so thank you very much...I will give you a point or rating or whatever it's called....lols

  • No Audio Out Of Headphone Or External Audio Output Jacks

We have a Rev. B Bondi iMac that I recently put in my wife's 4th grade classroom for her to use. When trying to hook up external speakers I discovered there is no audio output from the side audio output jack or the front two headphone jacks when listening to the CD player. (I also checked using headphones)
The internal speakers sound fine and normal. I do hear something very distorted and weak from the external audio output jacks but it is so distorted the only way I can tell it is coming from the CD player is by pausing its playing. I have been into OS X now for about 15 months and am starting to forget everything I knew of OS 8.6 which is in the Bondi.
I checked the sound portion of the Monitors and Sound Control panel and all seems set correctly. Is there some other setting that I have forgotten? Any ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    Herb Mesler...
Other than exercising the jack-ports with a plug from a headphone, it may need some expensive repair. However I do have a trick for you to try first.
    Here is my trick;
Computer must be off! Because there is some light voltage applied to the ports they can slightly arch, spoiling the trick. Arching is the root cause of electrical resistance thus not allowing for proper contact and sound will not pass through to the device.
Next take a plug "softly and full travel" through each port in the side and on the front. I repeat them about 5 times. (any proper spec/type of plug, like from a headphone can work. If it from something that is powered, like from speakers, do not use it)
Boot up the computer and test by avoiding the side ports, using only the front ports. Quite frankly I found the use of the side ports to be somewhat the cause of the problem. Mine has been taped off for about 6 years now and I never have had to repeat my trick to date.
Give it a try and post back if there is any questions. Also, I would like to hear your results.

  • TS1574 you should mention that the audio output jack is fleaky, try plugging and unplugging until red light goes off !!!

It should be mentionned in the Apple help that the audio output jack is sometimes fleaky, as it does not reclose the speakers contacts correctly when an earphone jack is removed. This can be checked by looking into the computer audio jack and seeing a red light, which confirms the optic output is active. Plugging and unplugging the jack until the red light disapears is the cure, unless you are unfortunate enough to have a broken audio jack. Good luck !

Same here. I don't remember doing anything out of the ordinary. I was working in Parallels on getting a AM station to stream via some web interface. Next time I went to play sound on the internal speakers, no go.
I've tried zapping the PRAM, toggling the headphone jack and the toothpick thing. Nothing seems to work.
I've also noticed that I get sound in my headphones in iTunes but not in Garageband (someone had suggested that starting up Garageband would reset things.
    Any other ideas out there?
Is there a file that could get corrupted that I could switch out of my back up?

  • No audio from components plugged into audio in jack

I'm trying to convert old cassette tapes to digital format to eventually burn to CD's. I've followed all instructions for hooking up an external tape deck to the audio in jack. I have the correct cable (same Belkin cable I use to have iTunes play through my stereo via Airport Express). I've changed the input under system preferences to audio in jack and can see the sound registering but I can't get any sound whether it's through the internal mic or the mini-speakers. I downloaded Audacity to assist and it is just recording static. Seems so simple but I need help...Thanks

Thanks for the response. I tried downloading some of those audio in playback programs but I am on OS 10.3.9 and they all seem to be geared towards 10.4 + so they did not work. I have determined that my audio in jack works and can record music with my set up and play it back with sound once recorded through Audacity. Now I am just trying to get the computer to play the music out loud from the cassette player so I can actually play the cassettes to determine where to start stop for recording. I can't get any audio output until it's been recorded. I need it during playback. Thanks.

  • Internal audio has gone missing

Has anyone seen this problem? It's a new MBP and I can't get any internal audio output.

    Hi Tom,
Peek in the digital audio port. Can you see a red light glowing?
If so, a slightly out-of-spec analog audio plug has likely jammed the digital port (tighter specs) in the MUTE position. Apple's official fix is to replace the logic board, but most people area able to fix it by putting a plug in the port and GENTLY wiggling it in the horizontal plane.
I've found with both my MBP and a circa 2003 PowerBook G4 that most analog plugs will deliver proper output and stereo separation long before the stop shoulder on the plug touches the case. The plug is held firmly enough to stay put for normal usage. It's inserting the plug "to the hilt," so to speak, that jams the MUTE contact.
I've taken to putting on headphones or turning on external speakers BEFORE plugging them into my notebooks. I insert the plug slowly until I hear proper sound, then stop pushing. No jams since adopting that procedure.
If there is no red light, I'd head for the Apple Store or AASP. Although some say an SMC reset will fix the muting in the absence of the red light clue, I'd let Apple work on a new computer.
I'll try so get a picture later today of what mine looks like with the plug in a functional position. I recall the stop shoulder being between 1/16- and 1/8-inch from touching the case on either notebook model I have.

  • Work-around for a broken headphones / audio-out jack on an iMac?

My late 2012 iMac suddenly refuses to show "Headphones Out" in the sound panel when I insert a 3.5mm stereo plug into the audio out jack on the back of the machine.  Instead, the sound panel will show only 'Internal Speakers."  I'm beginning to accept the necessity ofr a hardware repair, but in the meantime I'm wondering if there's a workaround that would permit me to mute the internal speakers and direct the sound, once again, to my Onkyo receiver with its attached external speakers.
    Any suggestions much appreciated.

I have tested your utiity, but it does not work with my booklet. Do you have a gudline how to include ?
    Thx

  • Unable to record internal audio with RecordMyDesktop

In order to record sound and video from my desktop, I installed RecordMyDesktop (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/RecordMyDesktop) and followed the instructions from post #4 and #6 on a thread about "Recording internal audio with alsa and recordmydesktop" (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1359593). I can record from the microphone with with the command "recordmydesktop". I succeeded in recording the internal audio with audacity by choosing the device "looprec" for recordings. I'm not sure why RecordMyDesktop gives an error while Audacity does not. Below is my ~/.asoundrc, which I copied from the aforementioned thread. I am not knowledgeable, but I guess there is a mistake in it? Would you please assist me solving this error? Thank you for your time.

  • What type of connector do I need from my Macbook Pro Retina laptop for sound out to audio speakers with regular audio input jacks?

I am wanting to use regular audio speakers with traditional audio input jacks to serve as output speakers on my Macbook Pro Retina display laptop. What type of cable would I need to connect?

  • Using The Internal Audio

    Hello,
I've been experiencing problems with a third party audio interface, namely Mbox, working smoothly with Logic. It was suggested to me that I should try using the internal audio for working with Logic. I was laboring under the false assumption that the internal sound was only 16bit. I would like some feedback from someone who uses the internal audio in a home studio situation. Namely 1. If possible, how to connect the internal output to an external monitor system. 2. How to connect a preamp for recording through the internal sound. Can this even be done and can I expect results equal to the Mbox?
    Thanks

Actually, it doesn't make a difference if it's a TRS or an XLR. The difference is in the Apogee's inputs. With the One, you have either a instrument quarter-inch input or a Mic XLR input. Neither works with a balanced +4 line signal, which is the signal coming from the Grace. With the Duet, you can switch internally the XLR inputs from Mic to +4db line signal.
Also, I know the Grace preamp is really good but another possibility is to stop using it and plugging your mic directly into the Apogee preamp. I know it can sound weird as a suggestion but you'd be surprised at how good the Apogee pres are. And if you only need one preamp, the One will work for you. One last thing: the Duet is Firewire, the One is USB. That means you should be able to have lower buffer settings with the Duet, hence less lantency.

  • Optical audio output jack

Just purchased this new desktop and am running the audio output out throught the optical audio output jack into my surround sound receiver, AWESOME!  Wanted to know if I could connect an optical audio splitter to this jack and split the audio output of the computer into TWO separate receivers?
    This question was solved.

There are SPDIF/Tolink splitters out on the market... here is an axample.

  • Audio Out Jack Quality

Does the iMac sacrifice some audio output punch by making the audio/headphone jack double-up as an optical out?
I noticed when plugging in a headset or AC-Powered Logitech speakers with a Sub-Woofer that the loudness is not so loud, not as loud as I would expect.
Interestingly, the same Logitech speakers plugged into my Airport Express and streamed to sound louder. Combined with the multiple speaker option of AE and the built-in speakers sounds the best/loudest.

Bought 5.1 surround sound and turned up the volume

  • Audio out jack malfunction macbook pro 15-inch (late 2008)

The audio out jack on my MacBook Pro is functioning intermittently.  I am sure this is a mechanical problem effecting the analog signal (no red light indicating digital output). I have checked the system prefs for sound-- output shows device connection and mute box is not checked. If I jiggle the plug I might eventually get a connection. Did a little research and the problem seems to be occurring in the 15-inch Unibody MBP from late 2008 (my machine) due to faulty design of the jack.  Most sites do not recommend replacement of the jack due to the necessity of resoldering to the logic board. Some suggested inserting a piece of tinfoil to tighten up the loose jack but I am not comfortable with this. Any suggestions out there?

Resetting SMC could solve the problem.

And you need to install more RAM, I think.

  • Help! Won't start without internal Audio hard drive

    So here's the issue.
I've been having some problems with my internal Audio hard drive where it will randomly un-mount and I think it might be causing crashes. Anyway, I decided I'd just take it out and use an external drive. When I did that and tried to restart, the computer just loses power. It tries to start and then just shuts off, I never even get anything on my screen.
If I reinstall the drive, the computer starts up.
Also, when I take the drive out, it refuses to start from an external drive or a dvd.
I've tried resetting the PRAM, the NVRAM and the Open Firmware with no results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Stephen

Yeah, there is. It seems to work fine when the second drive is hooked up and I've made sure it's set up as the boot drive in system preferences. The drive I'm using as the Audio drive is actually the original hard drive that came with the system and the boot drive is a newer SATA drive.
Also, while both internal drives are hooked up, the computer will start either from a DVD or an external hard drive no problem.
