Powerbook internal HD swap

I've asked this question to a couple of software vendors and they don't seem to have a definitive answer. I have a Powerbook Titanium 667. I have upgraded almost everything on it, including the hard drive. I use alot of music software (Logic Pro, Reason, etc.) and I have LOADS of plug-ins, soft synths, etc. which take hours to authorize and install. I recently bought a used Powerbook G4 1.67 as an intermediate step between the 667 and a Macbook Pro (waiting for a few key plug-ins to become Universal Binary). My question is this: is there ANY reason I couldn't swap out the internal hard drives between the two machines? It would save me HOURS of re-installs and re-authorizations, plus the hard drive with all the software on it is a larger drive. My concerns are things like, for instance, system id's that might confuse the software into thinking it's been copied (?). OR will the new machine just boot up like the old machine with my desktop intact and programs in place?
sorry for the length of this one....really curious if anyone has had experience with this.
Tim
PB 667/PB 1.67   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Just an update in case anyone ever asks:
I got the drives swapped out, and everything boots up ok, AND most applications are fine, HOWEVER...
Soft synth plug-ins ARE indeed having to be reauthorized. Apparently, any plug-in that uses a digital "system id" where the actual hardware is identified and an id is generated requires a new authorization code. A bit of a drag, as I have to convince the various manufacturers that I'm NOT asking for an additional "copy" of the program, but I'm just moving an existing copy.
Sigh....oh well. Just thought you'd like to know for future reference. It's still better than complete reinstalls (so far....lol...)

  • Capturing dv from camcorder on powerbook internal drive then moving to exte

I plan on installing FCE HD in an OS 10.4.6 Sandbox partition on my 667MHz Powerbook G4 Ti DVI w/ a 60 GB 7200 rpm HD w/ a 13GB Scratch partition.
Since the PB has a single Firewire port, can I capture video from my camera through that FW port to the internal drive Scratch partition and then transfer that file (or files: I have a bunch of footage) to an external FW drive for further work, again using the single FW port for the initial transfer and then editing, etc.? Can I use USB 2.0 for the transfers after capture?
Any special considerations in doing this? Things I haven’t thought of? :–)
Powerbook G4 Ti DVI 667 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   60 GB 7200 rpm internal HD, 1 GB ram, Dell 24" monitor

A Sandbox partition is one generated by SuperDuper! to allow an independent, second OS on a drive. Mine has been working fine and allows me to run new software, including OS updates without affecting the Main partition with it's 'master' set of 'original' applications (the Sandbox uses aliases of the apps on Main). If the new OS or app works, then it can be installed on the Main partition with less danger of unexpected problems. By running from the Sandbox, corruption of the Main partition is less likely.
Why is a scratch partition on the internal drive 'not really a good plan'? Is your caveat for real time capture only, as here or with audio capture, where the disk may be given other, higher priority, tasks by the OS, dropping frames? Hadn't thought of that. The Scratch volume appears to work fine for Photoshop, etc. And I would think it would for post-capture editing in FCE.
'You can daisy chain the camera through the FW drive to the computer. This works with most cameras'. Perhaps I am crying before I am bitten. I have seen posts elsewhere (places I can't recover now!) that recommend using 2 separate FW busses (i.e., adding a FW cardbus to my PB) for the camcorder and the capturing disk, saying that chaining the 2 is likely to cause dropped frames. (My camcorder is an original Optura so it may not play anyway. But that is something else again.)
'USB is not supported by Apple for use with video applications'. Does this include USB 2.0? And I have not seen eSATA mentioned anywhere. ???

  • Internal DVD - swapped harddrives - won't play normally

And this is probably my fault - but here we go:-
I just obtained a iMac DV 400 ( OS10.1 as I had to erase the HD for the person who gave it to me to make sure none of her stuff was left on it)) - internal DVD ROM verified in profiler - but I thought I'd swap a 40GB harddrive (from an Indigo 500 CD-ROM) onto the new Imac DV so my 13 yr old daughter could keep her files and creations etc - as well as her 10.3.9 which came on the Indigo 500CD-ROM when we purchased it - AND still play DVD's.
Now when I originally inserted a DVD - "Five children & It" - onto the iMac DV withit's original !OGB HD the DVD app. came up and played the DVD most admirably.
Now after the swap - when I inserted the DVD I just got contents window - so I copied the DVD player app from the original 10GB HD, and transferred a copy, via THUMBDRIVE, to the IMac's now 40GB HD, and stillonly got a contents window.
But if I pressed on one of the items in the contents window, the DVD actualy ran - albeit slightly jerkily.
But it's not the perfect solution - what am I missing to make the DVD player work properly when I load a DVD.
OH another clue - when I double clicked the transferred DVD Player icon on the newly implanted 40GB - it would sort of leap up as oif it were going to do something but then nothing came of it - the app didn't run.
HOpe I've given you all enough info to start with.

PS good to see some familiar faces on this area of the discussions forum.

Hi Don - thanks for your input. Yeah - I notices the VLC software alrady in my application folder and did try it - but I had to go up a notch in version.
Anyway - before I got any response I just re-swapped (is that a word) the harddrives and it all went fine - I'll jsut transfer her stuff by thumbdrive, which I should have done in the first place but I wanted to put in larger capacity HD. Never mind - 10 GB will do for now. I'll bring that machine up to Jaguar 10.2.8 then soon to Panther ( when I go get a copy from a mac dealer who happens to have a few left- here in Perth Australia that is).
Now I'll go post a new question - I'm haven't got GarageBand and I don't even know if one can use it to splice two tracks together or even make an mp3 out of part of a musical track and 'manipulate it in some way - so I'll be looking for a 'free' software that can do that if I can find one.
Thanks again for your participation - it's always good when people offer a few wrokarounds even if they don't know the 'perfect' answer.
    ciao

  • PowerBook internal audio in jack...

My powerbook audio in jack produces an extremely low line level in GB when I plug in my guitar directly. Is this normal?? I just wanna plug directly in to the machine seeing as I don't have money right now to afford myself an audio interface and preamp...what's the catch...? is there some setting I must change to acheive a higher signal??
    help!! please!!

Thank you...I am at school right now and cannot test your suggestion...but I am sure that it will work because my preference was set to internal mic, not line in...so thank you very much...I will give you a point or rating or whatever it's called....lols

  • Ti Powerbook Internal Battery Question

    Folks,
I have a Ti Powerbook (400Mhz) and it has been stored for some time. When I tried to turn it on it would not start up. I have tried to recharge the internal battery, recharge the primary battery (which did not charge at ALL), reset the PMU and zap the PRAM. None of these things have worked and the computer still won't start. i am assuming from these things that the internal battery is dead. Can someone please tell me: 1.) where exactly the internal battery is located (I believe it is under the optical drive) ? 2.) How hard of an install a new battery would be (I'm pretty handy with a screwdriver) ? 3.) Can I buy a replacement battery at Radio Shack or the like? I would very much like to get this computer up and running for my fiance who is considering a switch from a......GULP.....Dell laptop. Thanks in advance for the help.
Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   None

Hi, epotkano, and welcome to Apple Discussions. When you tried to recharge the internal backup battery, did you do so without the main battery in place? If not, do. The backup battery is often resilient enough to come back to life and take a charge even when both batteries have been drained so long that the main battery defies resurrection, but it may only happen if the dead main battery is removed. If after 24 hours of attempted charging with the main battery removed, the Tibook still won't start, disconnect the backup battery's wire leads and try again. If the PB then starts up, the backup battery should be replaced. If it doesn't, the backup battery is not the problem — or not the only problem.
The backup battery module resides directly under the right wrist rest, above the slot-loading optical drive. You must remove the keyboard, the lower case (bottom panel) and the DVD drive to get to it. It isn't hard. The module (here's a picture) is a unit, though it contains several flat, disklike cells; if it has to be replaced, you replace the whole thing including its wire leads, not just the cells. It's only sold by specialty Mac parts dealers, and I notice that it's currently out of stock at iFixit. • Powerbook G3 Motherboard Swap

Hey I just got two powerbook G3's for free and was wondering...
Can I fit a dual core intel macbook motherboard inside?
    Where can I Find One?
The case is big enough and power supply is no issue...can it be done?
If it can, i just ended up with 2 medium quality macbooks

    sgt_knox:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
While the PB G3 case may be the right size, it takes a bit more than that to make a computer work. I am not technically adept enough to tell you why it will not work except to say that the architecture is completely different. You can get the MacBook logic board at PowerBook Tech for $330. However, as I said, I am pretty certain it will not work. For the price of two logic boards you almost have a new MacBook.

  • Powerbook internal mic, audio line in

Is there any way to turn off the internal mic? Anytime I try to use the line in port, the internal mic creates problems. Also, is there a way in Garageband (or any other Mac program) that you can use to plug in a stereo and transfer cassettes to a burnable file? I haven't been able to get the line in to work right. Thanks!!

  • Selling My Ti Powerbook ...swapping hard drive first

I just bought a new mac and I'm going to sell my trusty Ti book. But first I thought I should swap out the hard drive and reinstall the OS -- you know, just to avoid any identity theft issues.
Is it as easy as swapping the drive and then popping in the OS disc that came with my mac?
Will the disc have any problem recognizing the hard drive or something like that?
What kind of problems might i run into?

    Hi Name Withheld,
One thing that generates a lot of posts here is not being able to install an OS immediately after installing a new HD. Most often, simply going up to the Installer menu, opening Disk Utility, selecting the HD, and formatting it (select the OS9 drivers if you want it to be able to boot into OS9) is all it takes. Some people, for whatever reason, have had to do a restart before the HD was recognized.
Also, when disconnecting/connecting the cable to the HD, be gentle with it, as some people have damaged it when removing/insalling a HD. Directions for the whole procedure are right in your owners manual or ifixit.com.

  • Jumbo Frames support on G4 Powerbook 1.67Ghz??

Hi - I have purchased a Thecus Nas and a gigabit switch, both support Jumbo frames. I want to use the NAS to stream video and hoped I could enable Jumbo Frames on all network devices. On my Powerbook internal NIC the Jumbo frames option is greyed out. Should I be able to configure Jumbo frames on my internal NIC? If so what am I doing wrong?
    Many Thanks in advance,
    Alan

    See the following article:

It seems that this important Gigabit Ethernet feature is not included with most Mac NICs.

  • Swap Space on a (very) Small Server

I'm setting up a small fileserver/remote login box at my house.  Mostly it'll just be used for running torrents and the like (I wanted a low-power system I could leave on 24/7); later it might be turned into a firewall.  It's a mini-itx board, so it's got a built-in 800mhz processor, 512mb of ram, and an 814mb harddrive.
Since the harddrive's so small, I'm concerned about how much space I should devote, if any, to the swap partition.  Obviously 2x ram isn't even a possibility.  I'm not expecting to have a very large install; it'll mostly just be a base install + rtorrent, ssh, w3m, and the like (no X Windows).  Would there really be any reason at all to have a swap partition on a machine such as this?
    Thanks for any help.
Edit: I forgot to mention data storage'll be on an external drive.

I had thought of swapping to external, but that hadn't occured to me.  I think I'm going to try to install in <300mb, and if that doesn't work out, I'll take the external install/internal swap route.
    Thanks.

My G4 Apple PowerBook will not boot further than pale blue/grey screen displaying "flashing file symbol / flashing ?"
Last previous action:  Used Firewire cable and "Target Mode" to copy files from G4 eMac to the PowerBook.
I worked from the eMac to the PowerBook, making the PowerBook the "Target".      Files seemed to transfer OK.     Won't boot from InstallDisc.  Holding down T on startup results in Target mode screen.   I have a G4 iMac and a G4 eMac.    Can I use either of these with Firewire cable to boot-up my PowerBook ?
I'm new to using this Communities & Forums Help.   Can someone please help me to get going again ! !     Thanks for your time.  Graflood

    Hello,
It sounds to me like the PowerBook is stuck in target disk mode.
It's expecting the iMac/eMac to be there when booting. Seeming it's not attached, it will show a flashing folder.
If your PowerBook internal drive is bootable, then simply hold down the option key when booting and select it's internal hard drive. That should boot your PowerBook into Mac OS X.

  • Problems installing bigger hdd in Powerbook 3400C

I have a Powerbook 3400C. I want to install Linux on it to try to gain some functionality from it.Yellowdog seems to be my best bet, but there's isn't enough room on the installed 1.3 gig hard drive for the needed OS 9 and Yellowdog installations.
I have an 8gig drive I pulled out of my Wallstreet powerbook.
I swapped the drives, and while I could install the Mac OS..8, 8.5, and 9 on the 8gig, I could not boot from the drive...it would give me error 10 errors, with or without extensions turned on (when booting from the drive).
(I was able to install a bare bones, no extensions version of 8.5 and boot with that, but i had no other functionalities, and I couldn't do the same with 9.)
Putting the 1.3 gig drive back in, I had no problems.
According to [www.insanely-great.com] the drive should qualify (I assume it's an EIDE, not ATA6 since the Wallstreet lists EIDE and i could install to the drive from the CD.--A web search on the drive confirms it's EIDE/ATA3)
    Anyone done this..have thoughts..advice...prayers?

    Todd,
The Wallstreet HD should work fine. Since you were able to boot the 3400 with a minimum install of 8.5, that demonstrates the soundness of the hardware.
    Two suggestions:
    - Are you installing from retail MacOS System CDs or using some other method of placing the OSes on the HD?
    - Boot to your MacOS System CD > use the Drive Setup on the CD > check the 'zero all data' under Initialization Options to thoroughly wipe the HD. When this is completed, run Drive Setup's Test Disk to make sure you have no bad blocks that have not been spared or reallocated. If the test is negative, run 'zero all data' and Test Disk again. Once the HD is pronounced healthy, you can initialize/partition the HD as you see fit.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24764
I do not know if the above will solve the problem, but if the HD is healthy and you are installing an OS from retail CDs (OS 9.1 is latest version the 3400 supports), it should work fine.
There is a limitation when using an HD larger than 4GB in the 3400, but I doubt it will affect you:

  • How do I reset my powerbook to unused condition

I just sold my PB G4 12 inch on eBay. I want to remove all the users so the new owner can set up his/her own admin account. I booted the computer in firewire target mode and deleted the user folder but when I rebooted it still remembered the user.
    Joel Topf

    Hi.
There's a way to erase all previous users, and leave the computer like it has never run before (to the new owner, of course):
First, Apply the latest OS X updates, and upgrade and/or remove the applications you want. Since you are selling the machine, I suggest you to remove logs.
Then boot from an external volume (or in Firewire Target Mode), and remove these files from the PowerBook internal drive:
/var/db/local.nidb (this is the netinfo database. It keeps record of the local users).
/var/db/.AppleSetupDone (hidden file. When you delete it, the next time you start the machine it will run the OS X wellcome and registration)
You can also do it whitout booting from an external volume, just boot into single user mode (Command+S) and type at the prompt:
    rm /var/db/local.nidb [hit return]
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone [hit return]
shutdown -h now [hit return. The machine will shut down]
    Good Luck.

  • Power PC imac / powerbook- Emigrate to Intel machine...

    Ok i have a Imac G5, 250GB (10.4.11)
    and
    Powerbook G4 with 120GB (10.4.11)
I have a 750GB External drive which i use for video editing (is mac formatted (NOT Journaled)
I plan to sell my imac soon so i will use my pbg4 - ONLY - then, within the next 6months (£ permitting), emigrate that to a new Intel MBP
If i use super duper to make a carbon copy of my imac g5 boot disc, will i be able to effectively boot my imac disc on my powerbook? Say, i could have my video apps on the boot disc, and less intensive stuff on the powerbook internal disc. will there be any issues? i guess i need to make a partition on my external - (230ish GB - Mac Journaled) the the remainder 300-400GB can be NOT journaled - used for video editing)
Also, will my power pc apps work on my new intel machine? If they dont use the rosseta stone (universal binary i think? ) will i have to buy / dl new intel / universal versions?
I guess its a case of sucking and seeing when it happens, ive recently got hold of final cut studio 2 which is intel so i have the most important app ready to go anyway......
Anyone who has done a similar thing advise would be appreciated.
Just a thought, its probably easier to just keep any essential files from my imac, drag over to my external drive. But how can i keep some apps on my imac? Im aware of the migration assistant, but that little fella wants to migrate the whole disc! which i dont want, just want one or two apps.

You can use your iMac SD clone on your PB, I used a clone of my iMac G5 on an old G3 iMac. However, if you boot from the external, you won't be able to use the data on the PB at the same time, you'll have to boot from the PB to to use the video apps.
Your PPC apps will work on your intel machine, mine do. However, some of them might not work with Leopard, which is what your new machine will come with, better check each app to see if it's compatible.
When you get your new intel machine, you can use Target Disk Mode to drag over those things you want on to the new machine.
Hope this answers most of your questions, post back if I missed anything,
