Powerbook is displaying a cancel sign at startup

Hello all,
I currently have a powerbook g4 that is giving me a cancel sign (circle with a slash) right after the apple logo at the startup screen. Then it just sits there and does nothing so I have to manually shut it down. I ran repair disk on it and it said that it fixed broken HFS volume header. I then ran verify disk and it didn't give me any kind of negative report, but I still have the cancel sign. Any thoughts???

Jim:
The symbol which indicates that the computer can't find a startup disk is the flashing folder/? The prohibitory sign may occur when there is a bootable OS on the volume but because there is a corrupted file the system cannot be booted. The net result is the same in the it calls for a re-installation. In this case, I believe, that the Archive and Install option will work fine.
Cheers

  • How to display a percentage sign ( % ) after a text box in a screen

    hi experts,
Can anybody tell me how to display a percentage sign ( % ) after a text box in a screen.

    Hi Ajay,
Try to use the  [Position|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/EN/9f/dba7e235c111d1829f0000e829fbfe/frameset.htm] option of selection screen.
By using this you can place the text as a comment at a desired position on the selection screen.
The syntax would be like this :
    SELECTION-SCREEN POSITION <pos>.

  • What does it mean when iPhoto displays a warning sign with an exclamation point when you try to open a photo in your library?

What is iPhoto 11 trying to tell me when it displays a warning sign with an exclamation point in it when I try to open a photo in my library?  I'm corrupted file and that since there are many I may have a bad drive.  I have 2 time machine backups (one is off site) but its not clear to me if I can restore individual photos or whether it's worth even trying since ther are many.
Any thoughts from people who have experienced this would be much appreciated.

I rebuilt it using iPhoto Manager and that appears to have worked. I did the rebuild onto a different drive and I'm now working to determine if there is a problem the the external drive that held the corrupted library.

  • After Mozilla upgraded (5 I think) my igoogle homepage does not display when I sign in.

I upgraded to Mozilla 5, (I think, as there does not seem to be any previous versions when I check), now my personalized igoogle homepage does not display when I sign in. I need to go to options then select igoogle. All was well before. How do I reset without having to completely redo my igoogle page. I do not believe I have the 6.0 version as that is what it says I can upgrade to. I am retired and am only learning.

Unless you have a version of iPhoto that was 9.0 or later you will not be able to download iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store.  To get 9.6.1 you'll need to purchase a copy of the iLife 11 disk from an online retailer like Amazon.com and then go the App Store and download 9.6.1.  Those who had an iPhoto 9.0 or later already installed have been able to get 9.6.1.  But there's been no reports from anyone who bought iLife 11 and went that route so you're at your own risk.

Hello Tony from New Zealand (great place, I visited once):
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Take a look at this article to see if it helps you fix the problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
If it does not, I think I would reinstall OS X 10.6 (upgrade from your software install DVD) over your existing system. Then I would run software update to bring everything to current levels.
A good backup before any software change is always a very good idea (I use both Time Machine and SuperDuper).

  • Prohibitory sign on startup

    Hi all,
My G5 froze this evening and I had to do a hard shutdown. Ever since then I get the prohibitory sign on startup (a no entry sign on the grey Apple boot screen).
I've followed Apple's instructions to reset pram and nvram, and replace mach-kernel, but I still can't boot from either of my internal drives, nor the CD drive.
    I've tried the following:
Boot from HD1 - no entry sign
Boot from HD2 - no entry sign
Boot from Tiger DVD - no entry sign
Unplug HD drives - no entry sign
Remove 2 of 4 RAM modules - no entry sign
Unplug all peripherals, including drives, remove all but two sticks of RAM - boots from DVD
Plug back in drives and peripherals but not RAM - works fine
Shut down, install RAM - no entry sign
Now, here's the odd bit. I then took the RAM back out as it should have then allowed me to boot again but it didn't and went to the no entry sign.
Took out all peripherals, unhooked internal drives - no entry sign.
Have also removed all ram and pram battery, then started up, shutdown, put it all back, then booted again and still the no entry sign.
By the way, I've reset the PMU twice during the evening, reset PRAM and NVRAM numerous times.
Target disk mode works fine so am able to recover data, and disk utility and diskwarrior report few errors, if any.
Does this point to a major hardware failure somewhere? Can anyone help pin this down?
    Many thanks,
    Justin

Do you have power? Do your drives spin up when you turn on the computer? If you do then,
    Try the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • Getting prohibitory sign at startup. Have tried everything!!!

Using early 2008 MacBook with 10.6.3. Getting prohibitory sign at startup.  Repaired HD through startup disc.  Still getting sign.  Any last ditch suggestions?

Do you still have your Snow Leopard install CD?
If yes, you could try booting from the CD and running Disk Utility > Repair drive, but most likely you will have to install Snow Leopard over your install. While this should not harm your data it's highly advised that you backup first.
Because you can't boot into your drive, in order to do this you would need a bootable drive. You would need to install OS X on the external drive and boot from that drive. Download SuperDuper and make a clone backup.
    SuperDuper! http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
You can select to use Disk Utility to erase the internal drive and install OS X. You can use migration to bring over your data from the clone backup.
If you meet the requirements and your software will run under Mavericks, you might choose this time to make the move.
    Check out your software here:
    App Compatibility Table
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
The two most common app that require updates are Microsoft Office 2004 and Older versions of Adobe CS. No app that requires Rosetta like Apple Works will run under Mavericks.
    OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
              ▪          iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
              ▪          MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
              ▪          MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
              ▪          MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
              ▪          MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
              ▪          Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
              ▪          Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
              ▪          Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
              ▪          OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
              ▪          2 GB or more of memory
              ▪          8 GB or more of available space
    Hope this helps!

  • Prohibitory sign on startup + wifi not working

A few days ago my 2011 MBP refused to boot and froze at a prohibitory sign on startup. I tried SMC resets, PRAM resets etc, but to no avail. Then I've managed to get it to boot a few times, usually after opening it, removing and fiddling about with the HD a little (yes, makes little sense to me too). But now it says Wifi: no hardware installed. I tried renewing the DHCP lease like someone suggested, but that just resulted in Wifi disappearing from the list of network connections...
Verify disk said the disk seems ok. Verify permissions, however, seems to freeze the system.
If I restart, it most likely boots into the prohibitory sign again.
Now I wonder, could these issues be related somehow, the prohibitory sign (points to a faulty HD, I gather) and the Wifi? Or could it be a software issue? I just want to know whether I should replace the HD and wifi or just get a new Mac.
Also, this is so rare that I have to share: these issues started on the day I was meant to hand in a project I've been working on for a couple of weeks (no backups of course, because why would my 4-yo laptop ever fail me?). But, it happened only after I delivered the project. Ha! And when it did boot again, I managed to do a full backup, including three years of unique family photos. Ha! again. A dark day at the satanic IT department, I expect.

The HDD seems to work normally via USB, though it's rather slow. I suppose that could just be a slow USB connection in my very cheap enclosure?
Exactly, the USB2 connection is the bottle neck.
I'll see if I can find a replacement SATA cable, I hope it's just that...
Though not the cheapest alternative, but the Apple store can do this and it should not break the bank.
    Ciao.

  • Apple logo switches to cancel sign...

Hi all, im installing OSX 10.4 on my wallstreet. I took the hard drive out and put it in my Powermac G4 so i could install tiger on that machine, and put it back into the Wallstreet. Then using XPF i could boot into 10.4. Any how, i installed it, it went normally, then the restart went like normal, and it got stuck at the apple logo boot screen, and then eventually turned into a cancel sign. Ive never seen this, and i have installed tiger quite a bit. Any help is appreciated!

So Vilem -- you took the drive out of your portable and connected it to the powermac and installed Tiger. It looked ok until you put it back in the portable, but in the portable it fails to boot. Is that right?
You'll need to reinstall Tiger from the portable. To do this from the state you are in:
    1) Start up the powermac in target mode (hold the T key while booting) with the Tiger install DVD in the optical drive.
    2) connect a firewire cable from the portable to the powermac
    3) Boot the portable with the Option key held down. This should show you your internal hard disk, the powermac's hard disk, and the Tiger DVD.
    4) Select the DVD and click the right-facing arrow to boot from it.
    5) Run the installer and select the portable's hard drive. Doing an Archive and Install would be best, if you have the disk space available on the portable's disk. To do that, click the Options button on the installer screen where you select a disk drive. Check Archive and Install and also Preserve Users and Settings.
    Good luck,
    John

  • When switching my iPhone on a message appears in black and white tiny writing on the top left hand corner. It displays the apple sign but won't let me do anything.

When I switched on my iPhone tonight it displayed the apple sign but in the top left hand corner a message appears in tiny writing in black and white and it doesn't let me go any further. I've tried holding both buttons down to reboot but it is still the same when I switch it back on.

Hi I can't read the message displayed as the writing is so tiny and cryptic. It starts with one line of text but continues down the page.

  • Powerbook as display/HDD for Powermac????

I am wanting to know if I can buy a Powermac and effectively use my Powerbook Ti as display and hardrive.??
    Is this possible.?
I am quite happy with the 15" LCD display of my Powerbook but the hardware needs updating. I want to buy a Powermac G4 and hook it up as the main computer (ie: Startup drive, apps etc). It just seems a waste to toss the Powerbook and buy a completely new display and tower.
I also want the flexibility of still having my laptop..
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

If you connect the two computers via ethernet, they remain two independent computers. If you wish, you can easily set them up so that each has access to all the files on the other's hard drive. But neither can use the other's hard drive as a startup disk, since each has to start up independently to be visible to the other over the network. And neither can use the other's processor, memory, audio or video circuitry, monitor, etc., under any circumstances.
Using Apple Remote Desktop, with which I'm not familiar, you might be able to control one computer from the other, but it would still be running as a separate computer from the one you were sitting at — you'd just be running it remotely.
