Powerbook is EXTREMELY hot

Hi,
In 2004, I got my first Powerbook and love it. I am still using the same one, and recently noticed that it is becoming extremely hot during normal use. I do keep it plugged in most of the time, and normally do not shut it down at night, because I want it to do the normal maintenance stuff during the night. I replaced the battery when Apple had the recall in late 2004, early 2005.
Is this something to be concerned about? I am looking for any opinions.
Thanks,
Dan

Dan,
First, what is very hot? If you download and run temperature monitor (available at http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19994), what's it show? While you're obviously noticing a change, having the temps is a good reference point.
Next, is something running that is driving CPU utilization, which would create heat. When you notice it's heating up, go to applications, utilities, and run the activity monitor. Do you find anything running that's chewing up the CPU?
Has anything changed recently? Did you just recently upgrade to Tiger? Do you run McAfee antivirus (which caused problems running under Tiger)?
Have you run the Apple hardware test to ensure everything is in working order?

    Hi Mende,
Thanks for the info. I am though not sure of the service centers here in Delhi (India) as they are really not concerned about the customer and try to make money by telling that things cannot be changed in warranty due to x and y reasons (my friend had similar issues and he was forced to buy a new charger even when things were in warranty). Though thanks for the info.

  • Power cord plug in overheated, black smoke and extremely hot...

My daughter has had the Macbook for less than a year. She says it has always sparked when plugging in/out but tonight
black smoke started coming out of the box where the prongs are. I am extremely upset...this could have caused a fire.
I understand we can probably get a new one as it's under warranty, my concern is still the fact that it overheated in the
    first place.
We do not have an Apple store in our small town and she needs a replacement asap. Should I just call the support
helpline? I'd like to think they'd take this seriously...
Here's a photo..the prong where it's burned was extremely hot, the other prong cool. ://

Except that it is normal under many circumstances.
Any capacitive load on a circuit will tend to resist changes in voltage, with the result that plugging in a capacitive load will often cause a small spark to form.  Similarly, an inductive load will tend to resist changes in current, which is why unplugging a running electric motor will also often cause a small spark to form.  The transformer in a power adaptor, when connected at the other end, is a capacitive load.
The trick, of course, is being able to differentiate between these effects and sparks caused by short-circuits in the socket or plug, which can be extremely dangerous fire hazards.  Certainly if there are other indicators of a short-circuit, like heat being generated, then it must be checked out.  In fact, if there's any uncertainty, it should probably be checked out.
However, explaining that there can be sparks in a perfectly functioning socket is not the same as telling people that sparking can, or should, be ignored.  If anything, it's telling them not to ignore it, but to investigate it.

The mdnsresponder will not quit.  Consumes above 100% CPU and kills my battery.  Also causes my fan to run constantly and my computer to get extremely hot.  Force quitting doesn't work.  It just comes back.   I posted about this earlier and never got an answer.  Somebody, please help.

mDNSResponder is a background process that runs all the time. If you kill it, it's relaunched automatically.
Please launch the Console application and select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "mDNSResponder" (without the quotes) in the search field. Post a sample of the log messages in the Console window -- only one example of each repeated message, please.

  • Imac 21.5" monitor extremely hot!

I received my new imac a few days ago and noticed that the monitor is extremely hot! I took it back to the apple store where I was told that the monitor could run as hot as 200 degrees!! The person who helped ran a diagnostics test on the monitor and everything came back ok. Is it really ok and safe for the monitor to run so hot??

Most monitors run a surface temp of 130+ degrees. This is just normal running temps though the glass shouldn't be hugely hot. Get iStat from the widget store and tell us your system temps.

  • Playing Nevierwinter Nights 1 and 2 - MBP 2010 extremly hot

Just bought MBP 2.4 Dualcore with Nvidia 320M. I tried to play Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 and it works fine, but MBP is after couple of minutes extremly hot and Fan is very loud.
I don't understand. this is an old Game and it shoudn't be a problem for a new MBP.
I also played this game on my old imac 2ghz dualcore with ati x1600 (Year 2006) and only 1GB Ram without any problem and the mac was cool and fan was quite.
So is this normal?. i watched temperature of the CPU with istat widget. It show nearly 85 C afer playing NWN.

What does the System Profiler say about the health of your battery?

  • Bottom of macbook warm or extremely hot what is the normal feel of it....

Know this discussion has been done to death but this is a variation on it. To what level of heat does the bottom of the macbook get to? Warm or does it get extremely hot causing one to have the reaction to pull the hand away when just trying to move the notebook. Not even talking about using on my lap but just the act of moving the notebook around. The hand contacts an area and the first reaction is to pull the hand away due to it being extremely hot. Is this normal under usual average load? Have yet to have it under heavy cpu load. Fully understand that there is going to be warm but just need to know if the norm is warm or is it hot to the touch as described above.
Again I fully understand that it will be warm but just need to hear from others and their experience so far with their macbooks.
From reading other users responses to the heat topic it is somewhat vague as to what the term warm means. Users have posted that it is just warm but not uncomfortable but others have stated that it is hot and uncomfortable. Just want to know if my notebook is within norm or not. Must also add that the cpu at idle is in the 140F range.

just my personal opinon here but I don't have any issues with the heat. These newer generation laptops that rival or exceed desktop speeds get hot and as one earlier post properly addressed, its a matter of physics! I really do not understand why so many people have issues with it! I place my laptop on a hard flat surface so as to allow ventilaton under the machine. If I am using it in bed, I put it on a small sofa pillow with a little tray...that helps keep it a good viewing height and dissipates the heat...Yeah it gets hot and I would not put it on my thighs after 15 minutes but other than that its a teriffic machine

  • HP Pavilion dv6 (70-28TX) Air from vent EXTREMELY HOT

Hi! I recently Purchased a new HP Pavilion DV6 70-28TX Entertainment PC. However, I have noticed that after a few hours of gaming (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim), The air coming from the left side vent of the Notebook is EXTREMELY HOT. I have made sure that the Notebook is getting optimal air-flow (Using flat desk surface, not obstructing vents, etc) I was just wondering if this is normal for this Notebook? This is the only problem I have had with this PC since Purchase on Christmas Day. (Infact I have been thoroughly satisfied with it apart from this)

If it is only happening when you are playing Skyrim or similar games, it is pretty normal. While notebooks have improved in their hardware, unless they are specifically designed for gaming, they are going to generate a lot of heat. Playing a game like that makes your computer work harder than anything else you are probably throwing at it. You might try turning the graphic settings down in the game and that might help a little bit.

You need to take it in to Apple and let them take a look at it.  You have a short in your iPod Touch that needs to be repaired.

  • Battery is extremely hot to touch

I got an 8G iphone yesterday. It went through one full charge in only 4 and 1/2 hours and is extremely hot to the touch, as in it burns my ear. Is this a defective battery I should return to the Apple store or do these batteries just run hotter?
    Clueless

Do you have any mail accounts set up? The reason I ask is that the mail application has a bug that causes it to sit in some sort of loop trying to check mail.
To see if that's your issue, go into Settings\Usage. See if your EDGE data usage is extremely high.
Next... open your mail application, then hold the home butto for 10 seconds until the phone goes back to the home screen. This should kill the mail application. Once you do that, wait 5 minutes and see if the phone has cooled down. If so, recharge it and the battery should last quite a bit longer.

  • Extremely hot laptop

I have an X220 thinkpad tablet, some times my laptop gets extremely hot for no aparent reason, even when I using few basic aplications, is there any way I can fix this problem?? Thanks for you help.

    Hi again, Duriko11
This sounds like a hardware issue of sorts to me. You may wish to download and run program that can tell you the temperature of your processor, such as Core Temp, to see if your computer is getting hotter than it should. Following that test, perform a restart and run the program again to see how big the change is. Please report back here with the results so the community can advise you on where to go from there.
    Best of luck,
    Adam

  • Extremely hot iphone 5

How come when downloading apps for the phone, my battery become extremely hot (Iphone5)

EXACTLY VERY DISAPPOINTED APPLE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A SUPPORTER AND I AM AWARE OF NEW TECHNOLOGY AND MARKETING SKILLS I COULD WRITE A SMALL BOOK ABOUT YOUR CORE BUSINESS SALES AND MARKETING IT' WORKS AND YOU NEVER CHANGE IT BUT THIS TIME IT WENT REALLY WRONG AND INSTEAD OF BEING A ' COOL' 'INNOVATIVE ' APPLE PERSONALLY I REALLY I'M surprised the issues are basically hidden. I paid 850€ for iPhone 5 and what I have is a phone that slipped from my pocket hit the ground on the right angle because its made of nothing I gave it to apple to get it fixed no warranty obviously and without knowing what it will cost they took 240€ in advance from my credit card saying it will be recredited if the cost is lower. Realistically these are not good signals the company is giving and they could at least help us and Apple YOU ARE NOBODY WITHOUT US.......
WE ALL KNOW HOW MUCH PRODUCTION COSTS ARE  ETC..... BE FARE.
JUST THE IDEA NEXT TIME A BUY A PHONE (Samsung) AND IT MAY NOT BE APPLE IS DISTURBING
    I'M very sorry

  • Ipad 2 wifi charger got extremely hot plugged into a/c?

I plugged my Ipad 2 into the charger then into a/c.  I was charging my Ipad when I moved the charger and it was extremely hot to the touch. I unplugged it and am charging it from my Imac. Has anyone had this problem?

There is this page for troubleshooting the iPad and iTunes on a Mac : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591
In terms of charging, have you tried a different charger and/or cable ? And you aren't currently using an iPhone or iPod charger with it - the iPad's charger is twice as powerful.
Have you tried a reset to see if it charges properly after it's restarted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
