Powerbook keeps freezing on the blue "STARTING MAC OS X" screen

Had to reboot about 4 times today and finally I got stuck on the blue screen with the progress bar under the "starting mac os x" message about a quarter full. this is the screen that you get after the grey start-up screen with the apple logo. anyone have any suggestions or ideas? thanks!

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
First, if you have any hardware connected to yrou PB, unhook it.
I would want to insert the first OS X CD, which says 'AHT Version x.x' on it, and reboot holding the alt/option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, click the arrow pointing to the right, and follow directions. Choose the extended test. Does it tell you anything?
Another option along the same lines .... insert the first OS X CD, and reboot holding the C key down. This will boot from the CD. The bring up the disk utility, and choose repair permissions, then repair disk. Does the repair disk tell you anything? Eject the CD and try rebooting normally.
And another option is to reboot holding the shift key down. This is a safe boot, and it does some disk maintenance and doesn't load the login items, amongst other things. If this works, try rebooting normally.

since upgrading to OS lion, my mac book pro (2010 August) keeps freezing (non responsive, requires restart) when i turn on my mac and the system is trying to open apple mail. while apple mail is attempting to collect new mail, the macbook pro freezes. this happens every 2nd time i try to start up my computer. this only started happening after i upgraded to OS lion. please let me know what I need to do to fix this. being forced to restart every 2nd time i turn on my macbook pro has been very frustrating. not sure if apple mail is also the cause of my macbook pro for being very slow during start-up (on the occasion the computer doesn't freeze).

I am having similar 'freezing' problems with many programs (Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc.). I have done a clean install of Lion instead of an upgrade when it came out. Perhaps something went wrong with my install? I'm thinking about wiping and reinstalling.

  • I keep getting the blue start up screen. Am I low on ram?

I keep getting the blue start up screen. Am I low on ram?

    hey
i am unsure what is causing your blue screen but it won't be because you are low on RAM,
RAM is seperate to your hard drive space and you will always have the same amount of RAM unless you upgrade it,  if it was a problem with the amount of ram you had you would of always had those problems if that makes sence.
try booting off the Disk that came with your mac,  or the recovery partition if you are on lion,  then run a disk repair from there to see if that helps.

  • Hi, I hope someone can help.... When I open a new user account, which I want to set parental control on, the screen keeps freezing once the account is open. The wee rainbow circle appears and I can't do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Report any errors it found for Disk Repair, don't need the ones for Permissions Repair.
Try it again & see if anything changed, but have Activity Monitor open & Show All Processes & sorted on CPU%, also have Console open if we can... maybe not when switching, but we'll see.
Does this happen if you just try to create a new admin user???

  • IMac G4 stops at 'Starting Mac OS X' screen with blue bar

I was having major trouble installing the OSX on my iMac G4. Kept freezing and giving me crazy codes & words on the screen. Finally after abou 7 tries, it worked. Now I'm trying to boot it up this morning and it stops at the 'Starting Mac OS X' screen. The blue, progress bar goes all the way to the end and just sits there. nothing. is this a fried mother board?

When I open the bottom of the iMac G4, there is no chip in the bank. Is there another place that holds memory that I'm missing?
Yes. To get to the other memory bank, however, you must remove the bottom housing by removing four torx screws. If you choose to do so, you must re-apply thermal paste before closing it up.
Before trying that, try to reset the PMU. The Apple Support page is http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1712

  • My iPod keeps freezing during the middle of songs etc.?

My iPod keeps freezing in the middle of songs and even when i plug it into the computer to charge. I've tried to restore it but iTunes rejects it, saying that it has an error. what can I do?

I have an Ipod touch.  Recently it has started stopping in the middle of the songs.  Sometimes it stops completely and sometimes it goes to the next song.
All the songs is it stopping on are recent purchases from Itunes.  A couple of the songs stopped midway while playing them on Itunes.  I did unsync the new songs and then added them again.
I tried the reset mentioned above, but it didn't help.
I have over 3000 songs, I'd like to avoid unsyncing and resyncing if at all possible.
the restore to factory defaults removes all the updates, doesn't it?
    I'd appreciate any help.

  • Cant get past the starting mac os x screen

hey im posting for my brother.. he has a macbook and now when he turns it on he cant get past the blue "starting the mac os x" screen its just stuck there.. HELP ?!?

Start up from the disk that came with the computer (or an upgrade disk). (Insert the disk, hold down the “C” key-it takes awhile so be patient. If it starts up to the install screen, click continue in the window that first appears. Then select “utilities” in the finder menu and select "disk utility”. Your HD should show up in the sidebar window. Highlight it and click the "repair disk” button. Come back with your results.

I had not been using this phone since October as I updated to the 5c and have had my kids using this for games.. About a month ago I thought it would be useful to update the IOS after I had updates the 5c but this crashed and it has not worked since..
I have reinstalled Itunes - I have just updated again now that IOS7.1 has come thought and I though I may be there as each step of the restore seemed to be working and the line under the apple logo was progressing. However it has now has now been stuck for 4 hours on restoring Iphone firmware?

After 4 hours of frozen screen is came up with an error message - Error (3)...Any solutions??

  • I have the iPhone 4S. Since I updated to the iOS 6 my phone keeps freezing and the apps crash all the time. Sometimes it freezes up to a minute. And there's no way of fixing that. Is apple going to fix this? I'm not the only one having this problem.

You cannot update iPhone 4 to IOS 8.1.2, the highest you can update is IOS 7.1.2.
Unless you've iPhone 4S (looks similar to iPhone 4)
