Powerbook M9969LL/A Tiger SAFARI lockup freeze with AOL

Anyone else get issues between Safari and AOL? I can never load and send messages properly and cleaning...always a lockup as AOL refreshes.
I now use Mozilla products (Firefox and Camino) for surfing web, as I can receive AOL and send without hiccups.
What is up with these Apple products...is Apple just TRYING to make things difficult and alienate people?
Thanks.

Hi Michael,
I've used AOL together with Safari and both work just fine. I wil tell you howver that when using a dialup connection I have noticed the kernel_task averages around 30%CPU usage and that's before I launch Safari. Here's some information that might interest you with regard to modems.

  • Safari 6 freezes with OSX 10.7.5

I'm using a recent Safari 6.1.6 update - and am now experiencing a problem I never had before with Safari on my OSX 10.7.5 MacBook Air system.
I am unable to use Safari for more than fifteen minutes or so before it freezes, and always when I'm switching to a new tab to view something. I never have more than six or seven tabs open. This is particularly irritating when I'm downloading material at the time, which is instantly lost, of course. Safari did freeze with earlier versions, but rarely more than once or twice a week.
Is there a way to return to earlier versions of Safari? Would this help? Any suggestions - preferable a solution - gratefully received.

I've been having this problem somewhat recently myself.  Not a constant thing, but I've had blue & multi coloured wheels at a PC like level.

  • Safari Crashing/Freezing with Yahoo Mail

I think this has already been mentioned but hoping Apple will do something about it if we keep bugging them.
Safari keeps freezing when I try to attach a file using Yahoo Mail. I have to force quit, even though it doesn't say that Safari's unresponsive.
Combined with the fact that Safari has also become very slow at loading pages, if they load at all, I've reverted to using Firefox. Thanks for the version 5.0 update, really regret installing it.

    HI,
I think this has already been mentioned but hoping Apple will do something about it
It's not Apple's responsibility to update third party software.
If you have BrowserPlus installed, it's not compatible with Safari 5.
    How to uninstall BrowserPlus: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/browserplus/uninstall.html
You can contact Yahoo here for that. http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/contactus/index.html

  • Safari regularly "freezes" with OS X Lion 10.7.4 ???

Recently updated to OS X Lion Version 10.7.4 and have had nothing but trouble with Safari ever since. From very slow loading pages to screen freezes and inability to scroll down on many websites, it's driving me crazy! Is is Safari? Is it my network? Is it the new operating system? I had a great Safari experience before making the upgrade and nothing but trouble ever since. Help!

    Hi...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
If that didn''t help, back to the menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes, click Reset.
If that didn't help, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
For Lion v10.7x:  To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash. Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, from the menu bar again, click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click Details then click:  Remove All Website Data
If that didn't help, might be corrupted Safari preferences (.plist)
    Quit Safari.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
Tip: Disabling the Lion "resume" feature will help to avoid caching issues in Safari.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
If nothing above has helped, go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that OFF, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
And try troubleshooting Safari unsupported plugins.  From the menu bar click Safari > Preferences > Security
Deselect: Enable plug-ins. Quit then relaunch Safari. If that made a difference, follow the instructions here > Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
    ? Is it my network?
Recently updated to OS X Lion Version 10.7.4 and have had nothing but trouble with Safari ever since.
More than likely corrupted preferences,  OR, a plugin, or an extension that was compatible with the previous Mac OS X but not Lion v10.7.

  • How to stop Safari from freezing with Maverick??

I updated my late 2009 IMac with Maverick in late December.  It continues to get hung up in Safari after 2-3 webpages.  I have used Glims Unistall over and over again as suggested  in numerous posts to no avail I continue to get a frozen page in Safari.  I shut down, empty caches, reset Safari and nothing seems to work.  Wondering if Apple is going to have a permanent fix for this problem.  I don't think I am the only one.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari Lockup/Freeze after opening a "NEW TAB"

I start up my computer and click on Safari. I will have one window open, however, if i go to File and click on New Tab the Show Top Sites screen shows up on the new window I have opened. At that time, Safari completely locks up. The only option I have is to "right click" on Safari and do a "Force Quit."
This happens every time I get on my computer. After doing a force quit, it will not do it again. It only does it when I start up my computer after it being shut down.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it? I have only had my Mac since April of 2009 and I am not Mac savvy at all.
    Thank you to all!

    Safari preferences are here.
    HD > User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist
You reset Safari from your Safari menu.

  • When opening Safari, screen freezes with word "Connecting"... Help!

WiFi connection is excellent. When I try to open Safari to browse, screen goes to a gray color and word "Connecting" appears while the little icon that symbolizes the wait for an operation to be completed just spins and spins. It would go all day trying to connect if the battery would let it... Ever heard of this problem? Thanks so much!

Have you tried the standard reset?
Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the
Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • I'm getting the rainbow wheel when I try tp pen in internet page (Safari). The page half loads then appears to freeze with the rianbow wheel.  I get the same result when I try to stream a movie from NETFLIX.  Freezes up rather than plays (after loading).

I get the rainbow wheel when I try to open an internet page. It loads halfway, then freezes, with the rainbow wheel whirring around. Smae thing happens when I try to stream a movie on Netflix.  The movie loads, then the wheel shows up and the screen freezes.  Same thing when I try a DVD, it takes the disc, but won't play when I hit on PLAY.
I am repair permissions, and all that I can do, but I am a novice.  Any help would be greatly appreciated because I spend big bucks and drive 40 miles to get Apple help.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If your profile info is up to date, you probably have a 2006 or 2007 MacBook with a CoreDuo or Core2Duo.
It probably came with 512MB or 1GB RAM memory and a 60, 80, or 120GB hard drive.
    You're still running OS X Tiger, 10.4.
Your DVD drive may be dirty or wearing out.
For specifics about your computer, click on the  Apple Logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, and More Info... to find details.)
You may be running short of hard disk space. You should have at least 10% free, or 10 to 15GB free for best performance. Less than that, and your hard disk is spending lots of time searching for places to store data.
Complex web pages and sites like Facebook and Twitter, and pages using Adobe Flash, and high-bandwidth applications like video streaming from NetFlix can all cause your computer to run slowly, and the fan to run at high speed, because the processor is working hard. Conversely, email is not terribly resource-intensive, and probably still works pretty well.
Several things can each provide a small performance increase (listed in no particular order):
Adding more RAM memory. Upgrade to 2Gb to give your programs a bit of 'breathing room', especially if you are running more than one program at a time.
Erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the current operating system and programs from scratch. This erases all your existing programs and data. Unless you have backups and program discs, you lose everything currently stored on it.
Installing a higher capacity, faster hard disk, say 250GB or 320GB will give your programs and data more space, and perhaps faster access if you replace the factory 5400rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive. If your current hard disk is nearly full (less than 10% free space), the drive has to 'thrash' to free space to store information.
Upgrading the operating system to OS X 10.5 Leopard or OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Both are discontinued OS X versions, still available to order directly from Apple, but not likely found on a store shelf any longer. An upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion might not be possible for your MacBook (details here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/), and Lion would likely cause a further slowdown, because honestly, Lion is optimized for newer, faster dual-core or quad-core computers with fast video chipsets and 4GB or more of RAM.
A faster internet connection, for example: I switched internet providers to get a 3.0Mb DSL connection (up from a 512Mb connection) for an extra $10 per month, and saw downloads and internet browsing speeds increase dramatically.  With the slower connection, it was not possible to watch video.
Will all of these upgrades together get you close to the performance of the latest MacBook Air or MacBook Pros? NO!
Ultimately, you have a 4- or 5-year-old computer, and spending up to several hundred dollars for upgrades might not be a worthwhile investment for you, versus applying that much money toward the cost of a new(er) Mac, and perhaps passing your MacBook on to a friend, child, or grandchild who needs mainly email capability.
If a brand new Apple is not in the budget, consider a refurbished Mac from the Apple Store online. These are reliable computers from 'last year's models' and have the same 1-year Applecare warranty as a brand new model, and often sell at a discount of 10 to 30 percent of the price when the model was introduced.
I'm using a mid-2007 MacBook, purchased as a refurb from Apple in late 2007. It came with 1GB RAM, a 120GB 5400 rpm hard drive, and OS X 10.4 Tiger. Over the years, I've upgraded it twice. Firs to 2GB, then to 4GB RAM, to a 320GB drive, then to a 500GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and to OS X 10.5 Leopard, and then to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Rather than one more round of upgrades to OS X 10.7 Lion, I'm saving for a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air at some time in the future.

  • Safari iOS 8 freezes with keyboard shortcuts on iPad

Safari with iOS 8.0.2 installed freezes if I have one keyboard shortcut with two letters and another with the same two letters followed by a third, e.g., xx and xxz. If I want the text corresponding to the latter, as soon as I try to type the z, the z on the keyboard turns gray and Safari freezes. This was not a problem with iOS 7. Has anyone else experienced this?

My iPad is 3 years old. Prior to installing iOS8, it had never seized up, no matter how many tabs I'd had open. Since installing iOS8, Safari frequently freezes, no matter how many tabs I have open. In an effort to remedy this situation, I've reset my iPad several times from within Settings; I've reset my iPad several times by holding both the on/off & wake/sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple icon appears, thereby allowing the system to reboot; I've deleted numerous cookies from my iPad's memory ... and Safari continues to seize, usually while I'm in the middle of a wikia edit, though also in a Facebook post, and even in a prior Apple inquiry. Just what can I do to cease this vicious cycle? What is the solution to this iOS8 debacle?

  • Tiger & Safari 2.01 Issues with machine .local

    Hi folks.
    Tiger
    Safari 2.01
I can't get it to see my localhost. My machine's name is kayak, and when i point Safari to kayak.local, I get strange things.
After a restart, it loads up fine.
    New tab, command-shift-H, fine.
New tab, command-shift-H, Failed to open page, cause can't connect to kayak.local.
    Huh? It's the same machine.
When I turn off personal web sharing, then turn it back on, it works again, then shuts off again.
Can someone tell me why this is such a pain in the browser? And how I can fix it?
    Cheers

Hi, Liam, welcome to Apple's user-to-user discussion forums.
Go to View > Customize Address Bar and you will be able to drag the Back/Forward buttons back onto the toolbar.

  • Safari, Camino freezing randomly across sites with great frequency.

All internet totally functioning, ichat, mail, streaming video etc.
But for some reason Safari is freezing randomly - some websites load fine,
others freeze halfway through or don;t even being to load.
I tried Camino - but the same problem happens so it isn' Safari specific.
I've dumped the cache, plist etc and restarted and repaired permissions to no avail.
Anyone know what the problem could be? It's sort of come out of the blue over the past couple of weeks and I'd REALLY like to fix it!

this is happening to me too. I am on an intel iMac, and it is happening in Safari, and also in Camino and Shiira to a lesser extent.
