Powerbook painfully slow performance

Recently my powerbook has been running unusably slow. Here's a timeline:
- Noticed slow opening of applications, saving, switching from application to application, browsing folders through finder.
- Computer kept freezing after 1-10 minutes of use.
- Checked RAM in system profiler - 1GB RAM showing 512 MB.
- Removed RAM and restarted (new RAM being sent to me at present).
- Freezing problem stopped. Slow performance improved for 2-5 minutes after startup but after 10 minutes, back to same old slow usage.
- Checked hard drive, repaired permissions, did macjanitor cleanup.
- Hardware check from startup DVD showed no problems. SMART check OK'd hard drive.
- Archive and re-install tiger and updated to 10.4.9.
- Activity monitor shows %CPU usage as fairly normal. Kernel_task is using about 720MB of virtual memory under very light/no user usage.
- Created a new user and performance normal in new user, leading me to believe that the problem is related to user library and possibly preferences.
- Put preferences folder on desktop and started putting my preferences back into user library folder bit by bit, restarting and testing. The performance would be better each time but hard to test as I have to wait at least 10 mins to test each time - time consuming business.
Is there any way to narrow down which preference file is causing the problem without painstakingly re-adding preference files one by one to the user library folder, waiting 10 mins and testing?
Otherwise, could the diagnosis above be due to something else all together. Been through the discussions and can't get anything to work so far. The RAM was the cause of the freezing problem, but seems to have brought on the slowness problem.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks Graeme.

Graeme:
If you have not done so recently run Unix Maintenance (CRON cleaning). Download and install MacJanitor and run all tests.
Dr. Smoke's FAQ Tuning Mac OS X Performance has some hints you may find helpful.
Regualar maintenance also helps performance. Take a look at the following articles:

  • Hard drive bays 3&4 painfully slow performance (3mb/sec) under Windows XP

I have the 2009 Mac Pro and experiencing ridiculously slow throughput of hard drives in bays 3&4. The drives are brand new Western Digital 1TB and Seagate 1.5TB, formatted NTFS. The drives work blazing fast when installed in Bay 2 (~90mb/sec!) but slow down to a crawl when installed in bays 3&4 (3mb/sec!). I used HDTach to run some low level benchmarks to make sure it's not an OS issue, and both the average read and burst speeds were 3.0 MB/sec. Under Leopard, the drives perform great. All of this leads me to believe this is some sort of Boot Camp driver issue that affects only the third and fourth drive bays/SATA ports on the new Mac Pros.
    Any help is much appreciated!

Run WD Diagnostic on the drives and do a full zero and extended test on them.
I've had two WDs that had really bad I/O graph patterns showing jumps from 95MB/sec down to really slow and the long jaggie graph. I even put it all into a folder with charts and numbers.
XP has some real problems though with heavy small I/O patterns. Odd that it would change or show up different in different slots.

+Since my original topic (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1998707) has been archived and I cannot reply to it, I am reposting my new (sadly negative) findings in a new thread.+

    *Update 10/2009:*
I have upgraded my Mac Pro to Snow Leopard and installed the latest Boot Camp 3.0 drivers onto the Windows XP partition, hoping and praying that the above issue has been resolved. NO SUCH LUCK. Come on Apple, part of the reason I switched to Intel Macs was so I could have dual-OS support which is critical in my line work. Since 2006 when I bought my first iMac, then another iMac, then 2 MacBook Pros, I have never had such a horrible experience as now. Please Apple, do not shun your customer base who uses Windows!!

    logicboard.
I have no trouble with bays 3&4 in Windows Vista/7 - never used XP so have no idea what problems it might pose.
    How about trying Win7 next?

  • Howto speed up painfully slow computer???

I have a 12" powerbook g4 that was the last model before the intel macs. it has a 1.5 Gig processor and 512 megs of ram. it has an 80 gig HD with 15 gigs free.
it is painfully slow. i don't run a lot of apps at the same time, i have restarted, i have repaired disk permissions and run disk utility. i also ran onyx.
my wife has a pre-intel ibook that has less power but runs significantly faster running essentially the same apps.
how can i speed up my computer?
    thank you.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Slow performance of Keynote 6.0.1

Shortly after upgrading to Mavericks I started experiencing performance problems with Keynote.  Here's a description of the behavior:
I create a new document and begin drawing with the standard Keynote shapes and text tool.  At some point performance takes a noticable decline and performing simple operations like using the text tool or selecting and moving an object gets painfully slow.  For example, if I were to type, "The quick brown fox" (which would take about 2 seconds), it would take upwards of 30 seconds to render on the screen.  If I copy and past the same text, it appears within a second.
I believe the slowness has something to do with the number of objects on the slide.  The slides I'm creating typically have 200-1000 objects in nested groups. The slowness doesn't appear to be linear (the more objects the slower it gets), but rather once I cross some threshold it gets slow.  I can't seem to find anyone else experiencing the same problem, so it's not clear if there's something unique about my setup, or the way I'm using Keynote, or something else.
I've tried a number of things to isolate the problem: created a new document with only one (basic) typeface, no raster images or effects, moved the file from iCloud to my local HDD.  In each case I've still experienced the problems. This is really the only application that is causing problems, and so I doubt it has anything to do with my hardware (iMac 2.93GHz, 32 GB RAM).  I monitor CPU and the amount of free RAM and so those aren't the issue. There's almost 2TB free on my HDD and the app is running from a SSD boot drive.  I don't know much about the Console utility, but I don't see any messages that might be related.
Anybody have any ideas on how to correct or better isolate the problem?

I should also note that I discovered this older article https://discussions.apple.com/message/2748043#2748043 regarding similar text performance problems with Pages.
One commenter lists these potential causes:
    1. Do you have any PostScript Fonts installed? Some people have reported problems with some PostScript Fonts.
    2. Do you have any missing fonts? When you open the document, does Pages complain that it cannot find one or several fonts?
    3. Do you have corrupt fonts? Open FontBook, select all fonts and then File > Validate Fonts.
    4. Corrupt pictures, songs and movies in your home folder's Movies, Music and Pictures folders can slow down the product through the Media Browser. AVI films in the Movie folder can slow things down, as QT usually cannot play them.
    5. Go to View > Hide > Layout. For some reason the layout slows things down.
    6. Don't view Thumbnails.
    7. Use the Text Fit option "follow contour" instead of "follow a square" in the bottom section of the wrap inspector. (Or was it the other way round? Anyone?)
    8. If an object is set to wrap, and a wrapped side squeezes out any possibility of text wrapping along that side - such as extending a text box to the margin, the extreme slowdown will occur. So don't.
    9. Use as few objects as possible Fixed on Page. Instead use Moves with Text.
    1. I do have postscript fonts, but none are being used.
2,3. No missing or corrupt fonts.
    4. Problems are not related to media files.
5,6. Layouts and hiding thumbnails have no effect.
7,8. No text options seem to have an effect.
    9. There are many objects -- could that be the problem?

  • Slow performance-CS4, why?

    Hi,
I have a Q9450 proccessor, Vista 64 bit with 4GB ram. ever since I installed CS4, things are going a bit slow in PPRO, and I don't understand why?
For example, scrubbing or playback in the timeline have become painfully slow, and sometimes, I see leftovers of the marker, as if I don't have enough memory (it's hard to explain in writing... I hope
you got it). Overall, all the symptoms shows I don't have enough memory, because of the slow performance, but it doesn't make sense, cause I have 4 GB, and in CS3 it all worked great.
    Any suggetsions?

    worked just great...
    I don't get it.
I googled a bit and found this thread:
    http://dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=149929&page=4
read what Dave Helmly at Adobe had to say (below):
YES we use all Cores for playback , effects, and rendering for both Mac and Windows.
I highly recommend switching to Vista 64 if you are a Windows user (Mac guys are OK with 10.5.4 or higher) Vista 64 will allow Production Premium CS4 to run using more than 4GB of Ram (XP/Vista32 Limitation). As with most NLEs, there are several programs running at the same time to give you the NLE experience. CS4 now allows each process to take up to 4Gb of RAM. If you have 16GB of RAM, then 4 processes can take up to 4GB each. This is a HUGE advantage over CS3. What are some examples of processes? DynamicLink, AfterServer, Photoshop Server, Adobe Media Encoder, Titler, Playback, Capture, Importer, and many more. I tell most people to count on buying 8GB minium.
So maybe I have to add more ram, in order CS4 to run properly...

  • Time capsule painfully slow under windows 7

I'm using a time capsule (latest gen, 3TB) with both a Mac and a PC. The Mac uses Time Machine to backup and things work great.
However, on my PC (Windows 7), the TC is mounted as a network mounted (drive Z), and if I simply try to drag and drop files from my PC to the TC, it's painfully slow. At least 10x slower than on the Mac.
As an example, copying 500MB takes about 10 hours...
Any suggestions on improving performance using TC on a Windows 7 machine?
    Thanks.

  • SCVMM 2012 R2 VM on SMB 3.0 file share cloning is not offloaded and painfully slow

I setup a test environment, it appears the SCVMM always use BITS to clone VM that was painfully slow
SCVMM1: SCVMM 2012 R2 with the latest windows update
VHOST1 and VHOST2: Hyper-V Host. Windows Server 2012 R2 with the latest update
SERVER1: Windows File server, with Windows Server 2012 R2 with the latest update. The storage is a single 512GB SSD.
All VMs are located at a file share on SERVER1, the share is managed by SCVMM1 also.
All computers have plenty of RAM (8G+) and modern processor. The individual I/O benchmark on SERVER1 is typical SSD speed.  Each VHOST has dedicated NIC for VM use. Each
server has two gigabit NICs on same switch for data.
    The step to reproduce:
    1. Create a Windows 7 x86 VM on VHOST1 and install OS on it.  The VM is placed on the SERVER1 file share.  It runs well. no problem, VM performance is good.
    2. In SCVMM console, right clicks the VM and select "Create Clone", the deployment target is on the same SMB share as the source VM.
Actual:  It appears SCVMM clone the VM files with BITS, it is painfully slow. All data travel through network. Estimated 30 minutes for 30GB file!
Expected result: SCVMM uses SMB 3.0 to make the copy. The source and destination are on the same SMB 3.0 share. The transfer of data should be offloaded by SERVER1, instead of reading all data then write it back cross network. (And from unknown reason the
BITS is even much slower than network file copy).
Did I miss anything? Any way to force SCVMM to do such offload copy?  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi acacac1,
    >>Actual:  It appears SCVMM clone the VM files with BITS, it is painfully slow. All data travel through network. Estimated 30 minutes for 30GB file!
Did you try to disable BITS then clone the VM again for test ?
Any further information please feel free to let us know .

  • Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870

    Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

    Great news!
I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in.

  • Safari painfully slow on new Mac Mini

I know there have been a number of threads on this topic and I have tried all of the tricks listed but Safari is still painfully slow to load web pages. I have tested my internet connection and it is fine. The real interesting thing here is that when I boot up under Windows (using Boot Camp) web pages load blazingly fast under IE, so it seems unlikely that I have a hardware problem. I have also tried Firefox with similar results. I love this new machine but I am pulling my hair out over its browsing performance.
    Anyone have a (new) thought?

Please try a test account to see how Safari works
there, if you do not have an other user account,
Go to System preferences ->Accounts ->Login Options
Tried this and believe it or not the problem was worse!
se the [+] to create one, you can later use [-] to
    delete/remove the account.
Do you use a third party Firewall or one on your
    router ?
    No on both accounts
Do you use DHCP Lease ?
Yes, I hit the "renew lease" button which had no effect
In the Network ->TCP/IP tab do you have DNS # values
    entered in the
    DNS Servers box.
    No entries in the DNS
Proxies tab, do you have any proxies selected ? if
Yes how does Safari surf with out it ?
    No proxies selected
Let us know what your findings are.
    Eme: )
I am going to try FireFox again and see if there are any things I can tweak that make it bearable.
    Thanks, Richard

  • Kodo 2.3.0 is painfully slow

Kodo 2.3.0 is painfully slow with Oracle database. It is doing left joins
repeatable reading the same data over and over again. It is so slow that it
is virtually impossible to use. kodo 2.2.x was lightning fast to compare
    with 2.3

We use Lightroom on three workstations in our studio.
    [Production workstation]
    Alienware (2) Dual Core Opteron 285 2.61GHz
    8 megs ram
    Raid 0
    Win 7 Ultimate - 64
    NVidia GeForce GTX 260
    [Presentation workstation]
    Quadcore Dell - Vista Ulltimate
    Raid 0
    [Production workstation]
Quadcore Dell XPS 710 - Win XP Pro
    Raid 0
All three workstations are running Lightroom 3.  All are running LR3 with unacceptably slow performance when compared to LR 2.7.
I am putting LR 2.7 back on all three workstations for actual production work. A typical wedding has 3-5 thousand images to process.  This has to be done quickly.  LR 2.7 is very stable on all my systems and runs much faster than any other version of LR I have had.
LR 3.0 looks to be a fantastic program.  BUT, version 3.0 is not ready for handling real world work flow at this time.  I am looking forward to version 3.1.

  • Remove/add panel to applet speedy in 1.3.x; painfully slow in 1.4.1/2.beta

The following code (which was working for years, including even 1.3.x) suddenly fails in 1.4.1 and 1.4.2beta on both win 2000 and win xp
    DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM :
An applet consists of 2 components: a contents panel and a button. The contents panel consists of one of several panels of components which are swapped at run-time. The first time a panel is added, the applet works fine, but subsequent additions of the "cached" panel cause 1.4.1 and 1.4.2beta to go to 100% utilization and take 10 seconds before properly displaying the panel.
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
Load applet described above (and whose short complete example is reproduced below), then click on button "Swap Contents". Each click should swap the contents between 2 panels very quickly. 1.3.x releases did all swaps quickly as expected. Suddenly, in 1.4.1 and 1.4.2beta, the first click is fine, but subsequent clicks are painfully slow.

hi, i have a new mac mini 1.5 solo core with 1gb of ram. Also running it with a 19"monitor. The game seems to run painfully slow when compared to my old ibook with a 1.33ghz processor and 1gb of ram.
    thanks

    Hi
Unfortunately your report is correct, depending on the game used, which name you don't give : if it's not Universal Binary , the mac runs it through Rosetta (powerpc emulator) resulting in -comparatively- poor performance...That, plus the fact that the ibook doesn't have to cope with shared memory for its graphic card...So in this situation, the theoretical advantage of the new mini on your previous configuration vanishes !

  • Painfully slow internet after upgrading to Snow Leopard

hi all, i recently upgraded to Slow leopard.
My internet has soon become painfully slow, taking (literally) minutes to load pages. I have checked my modem & router, they seem to be fine as my iPhone & Vista laptop run perfectly on the same network.
does anybody know what this could be?

If you have not done so since upgrading to Snow Leopard, you should run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+.
Have you used Software Update to apply Apple's latest updates after upgrading to Snow Leopard. If there are updates, you should run it a second time to ensure there were no dependent updates.
As a test, you can create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try the things that caused the problems. Is it fast in the new account, or is it the same? If it is fast, then the cause is likely to be in your normal user account. If it is the same, then the cause is likely to be with the overall system (the OS).
You can also try doing a Safe Mode startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
This will do some maintenance during startup and also load only Apple's essential system extensions and processes. Any third party software you have installed will not automatically run. Check the performance while in safe mode, and if there is improvement, restart normally to see if the problem comes back or not.

  • Usually very fast, Sometimes painfully slow.  Why?

There probably is no simple answer to this, but I'll ask anyway.
I am test driving Aperture 2.0.1 and so far like it a lot. But every now and then, on particular photos, it seems to slow to a crawl. For example, I have one photo that I shot a couple of days ago that has a stone building and a tree (with lots of thin twigs and no leaves) in front of it. This photo is just plain painful to work on -- all adjustments are slow, the loupe takes a couple seconds to open and can't be moved smoothly (it seems to jump erratically, so it's even hard to move it slowly), and even if I zoom to 100% I can't move around in the photo (using the little red navigation box in the navigation overlay) without similar erratic behavior. Even Quick Preview mode is slow!
The odd thing is that with the majority of my photos everything is very quick. Using the loupe feels almost like moving a real, physical loupe over a real photo -- it's that fast. There are just a few images that seem to cause this painful slowness.
So now the question -- is there a reason for this, and a cure? The best explanation I can think of is that this photo, and a few others, has so many little details in it (the roughness of the stone, and the randomness of the many thin twigs on the tree) that it's straining Aperture's raw conversion to its limits. But if that were it, I'd think that Quick Preview would have worked OK. And while I hate to say it (because this is an honest question, not a thinly veiled jab at Aperture), Lightroom doesn't seem to have any problem with this photo.
Other particulars -- I'm using a Nikon D50, and the photo was shot in raw. I've tried quitting Aperture and restarting it, logging out and back on, and even restarting the computer.

I think I have tracked the problem down -- it's highlights and shadows. If I turn that adjustment off everything works fine. I went back and looked at some other images and sure enough, if I turn on highlights & shadows the performance bogs down considerably. It's more pronounced on the particular photo I wrote about yesterday -- until that photo it was just a curiosity and I never made the connection, but this one was so bad that I was forced to check it out further.
