Powerbook Printing to a WinXP PC with Shared printer issue

I've recently made the switch for my laptop to a Powerbook G4 and am very very happy with it. There is only one thing that I cannot seem to get working though.
I have a Canon i950 Photo Printer hooked up to my desktop XP machine via USB and have it shared for network use. When I try to print to it over the network with my Powerbook, no matter what I try the text is always comicly small to the point that it is unreadable... picture a full page of text printed into the top corner of the page, scaled down.
When I connect the i950 directly to the powerbook with USB, it prints perfectly and I've got no issues. It appears that it uses a different driver for local printing as opposed to network printing.
Does anyone know of anything I can try to resolve this?

I dont have an airport express, but the thought did
cross my mind to pick one of those up. I'm not
familiar though how an XP machine would connect to
the Airport Express though.

would think... Just connect to it as a network

  • Macbook on longer connects with shared printer

Whenever I try to print from my Macbook using a shared printer I see this error message :
    can't open `/private/var/spool/cups/tmp/50d23352019a8'.
The shared printer is attached to a PowerMac G5. The G5 printer sharing is on, and the correct printer is selected.
    This problem just recently started.
In the Macbook's Systems Prefs Print&Fax pane it shows the G5 shared printer by name and its location.
I believe something is wrong with my Sharing Pane in my Macbook's System Prefs.
This pane shows the printer's name and the G5's location, the Printer sharing box is checked and the Printer Sharing green light button is on
However the two rectangular boxes marked Printer and Users are both empty, and the + - signs are both grayed out.
They used to contain the printers name in the Printer box and everybody in the users box.
Any suggestions as to how to fix this?  Do I need to make a change in CUPS?
    Thanks,
    Walter

    Try Add a Printer.
In System Preferences / Print and Fax, the padlock has to be unlocked to get access to + and -.
Remove the old printer name etc. (the - sign), then click on the + sign to add the same one back again.

  • Spooler.exe tries to communicate with shared printer on TCP:47546 port

    Hi,
    We have:
    1. AD
    2. Win7 Pro Workstations
    3. Symantec Endpoint Protection - allowed only SMB ports (135,137,138,139,445), denied all other communications incl broadcast.
    4. WS2 - computer with shared printer
Issue: As I can see in WS1 SEP Logs spooler.exe tries to communicate with WS2 on the TCP:47546 port. SEP blocks those communications and shared printer stays "grayed". The solution I found is to restart spooler. Sometimes it helps
Why does it happen? What should I do to force spooler to comunicate on standard SMB ports?
UPD: Printer shared and as \\WS2\Printer and as \\IP\printer - in both cases the issue persists

    Hi,
I am Chetan Savade from Symantec Technical Support Team.
You can either add printer to excluded host.
To add the printer to "Excluded Hosts":
    1.  Open your Intrusion Prevention Policy.
    2.  Choose to Settings on the left.
    3.  Check the box for Enable excluded hosts and then click the
    Excluded Hosts... button.
    4.  Add the IP address of your printer and choose Okay.
Can refer the following article to create remote port exception.

  • Printing from Windows 8 to a shared printer on a Windows 7 machine

WE have a a user that has a laser printer on A windows 7 machine that others in the office can access EXCEPT the one person on a Windows 8 machine. We have tried everything, but cannot get her to print to this printer. Says it cannot be found. What does
Windows 8 need to see a printer on a Win 7 workstation. She does have access to network printers and her own.
    Thanks.

We have the same kind of problem but a bit different.
Dell Printer (used for years shared on a network) was moved to our Windows 7 machine plugged in via USB.  We only use a plain workgroup with no Domain as we also have Macs on the network.
I have Macs using shared printer, a Windows XP using the shared printer, and even Windows 7 under Parallels on the Macs using the shared printer no problem.
I had the lone Windows 8 laptop using the shared printer but then it just stopped working.  So I deleted it and now when I try to add it is want credentials and none work.  It will not connect to the shared printer on the Windows 7 machine.
I have Windows 7 (which also has a couple shared drives that do work) set for No Homegroup and No Password for sharing - pretty much open as we are behind a Cisco Firewall to the outside.  No firewalls on the pcs.

  • Problem with shared printer after upgrade to Maverick

    Hi Guys,
I have one iMac and two windows PC which connect to the same WiFi router.
The iMac has a HP LaserJet CP2025 attached to its USB port and shared with other windows PCs with no problem.
Until I upgrade my iMac to Maverick recently, now those PCs cannot see the shared printer anymore.
Do you have any ideas what configuration is changed in the Maverick which could cause this please?
I have been searching through Apple communities and other tech forums and have tried many solution, but still cannot solve this. (I have also tried setting up LDP, but no luck so far)
PS ... Shared files seems to work fine. I can access (read/write) the shared files/folders from windows with no problem (SMB and AFP enable).
Any ideas, pointers or links would be appreciated.
    Cheers,

  • How to print from a macbook to a shared printer hook up to pc

    Hi,
How I could be able to print wireless from my macbook to a shared printer hook up to a pc. The printer is a DELL 1320C and the pc is a DELL Inspiron. Please help me out with this issue. I do all my stuffs in my mac and when I to print my job, I get a nightmare.

As long as you have a wireless router connected to your Dell and the printer is set as a shared printer...Just go and print a document and it will ask you what printer you want to use. Use finder to locate the printer from your Dell as it should show up under "shared". I think thats all i had to do when i had a Sony Vio and wanted to print from my MacBook. (You may need to log in as a guest to gain access to the printer.) Its been a while having since upgraded to a new iMac.

  • Printing from wireless MacBook to iMac shared printer

I have an HP PSC 2350 connected to an iMac in my office. I am using my MacBook via a Linksys router, in another room, and would like to print to the PSC 2350. The iMac and printer are turned on - but the printer does not appear on the MacBook. Something simple, I'm sure - but I need a little help! Thanks!

I have had a similar issue. First I plugged the printer into my macbook and made sure I could print directly to the printer. After this worked, I tried printing via the wireless network. Things work with this caveat. When I print for the first time after starting up the macbook and select print from an application ( say MS Word,) I have to select 'add printer' under 'printer' in the dialogue box. It searches a little bit and then the shared printer shows up. After this is shows up as an available printer until I restart my computer.

  • Printing landscape pdf to Linux CUPS shared printer

I'm having a problem printing landscape pdf documents from Preview to printers on my Linux CUPS server. Documents print portrait style, with the right side of the document cut off. This occurs in both 10.4.11 and 10.5.2.
Using Adobe Reader or printing the pdf from the command line using lpr work correctly to the shared printer.
Printing directly to the printer (not through the server) is the only way Preview prints it right.
    My CUPS server is:
    Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy
    CUPS 1.3.7

I'm having the same problem. I have a Lexmark x9350 that is shared through Airport Extreme.

  • Cannot print Snow Leopard - Windows 7 x64 Shared Printer

I need to configure printer sharing between a 64-bit Win7 Ultimate dektop and a Macbook Pro laptop running OS X Snow Leaopard (10.6). I have followed all of the conventional wisdom I can find on the net without success.

All updates applied to both systems, latest printer drivers on both.

Both systems in the same homegroup on the same subnet. IP addressed assigned via DHCP but preconfigured at the router -- essentially, fixed.

I've tried this with AV and firewalls on and of on both machines; same results
File sharing works in both directions

Win7 configured as follows:
All Print and Document Services Enabled
Printer: Canon Pixma MX700 connected via USB
Share This Printer on for both printer and FAX (it’s a MF printer)
Network discover: on
File & printer sharing: on
Anyone with network access can read/write
Media streaming: off
Enable sharing for devices that use 40- or 56- bit encryption
Password protected sharing: off
Allow windows to manage homegroup connections
Network profile set to Work

Snow Leopard configured as follows:
    System preferences->Print&Fax->Add Printer->Advanced
    Add printer
    Type = Windows
    URL= smb://user:password@workgroup/cptrname/MX700 -or-
    URL = smb://user:password@workgroup/192.168.1.10/MX700
Print using: Chhose a Driver or Printer Model: Camon Pixma MX700
The printer configures successfully and I can queue print jobs from the Mac. It shows up in the appropriate print queue on the Windows machine as Remote Downlevel Document and hangs in Spooling state. The only way to delete the document is to reset the print subsystem on the Mac.
I also tried unchecking “Enable bidirectional printing” under the printer properties on the Mac to no effect.

Your issue is with the Canon driver. It cannot be used on the Mac when you have the Canon inkjet shared by Windows. For these types of connections, you need to use an alternate driver, such as the Gutenprint driver set.
The only problem with Gutenprint is that your MX700 is not listed as a supported printer. So, you could spend hours trying to find which of the other Canon models that are supported by Gutenprint will work to your printer. Or, you could look at purchasing PrintFab.

  • Can I print to a 10.3.9 shared printer from 10.6.6?

I have given up trying to get my 10.6.6 iMacs to see my Laserwriter 630 via a Netgear PS101 print server. I am now trying to use an old Powerbook G3 running 10.3.9 as a print server. When I share the printer in 10.3.9 should I be able to see it from the two iMacs running 10.6.6?
    Thanks
    David

10.3 used a different sharing method than 10.4 and newer. Apple used to have a knowledgebase article for this, but I can't find it now.

  • Printing from linux machine to Mac shared printer?

I have a brand new Brother MFC 6800 that is connected to my Mac (10.4.4) via USB. I have a Linux box at home (Mandriva 2006), and I'd like to be able to print through the network to this printer.
I've been searching the web for instructions for how to set up CUPS and/or SMB to allow me to print this way, but have only come up with a few tangential references. Almost everything I've found is how to print from a Mac to a Linux print server. I want to do the opposite.
I'm handy enough with Un*x to edit config files, but not handy enough to know what to put in there. I'd appreciate anyone who can point me to a site that might show me how to do it.
    Quicksilver   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Chris,
I've not done this with a Mac but CUPS is CUPS. Open the /etc/cups/client.conf file on your Linux machine and change the ServerName line to point to your Mac. That may be all you have to do because the Mac's CUPS automatically adds the local printer for you. You may have to define a queue for it; I'm not sure but I don't think so. Also, you will probably have to authorize it on the Mac. The /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file on the Mac should have a line in it that look like:
    Listen <Mac_IP>:631
where <Mac_IP> should be replaced by the IP address of your Mac, (not 127.0.0.1) and similarly for <Linux_IP> below. Such a line should already exist for 127.0.0.1. Just copy-and-paste in a new copy of this line and change the IP address. Inside the definition of root directory you similarly may need to add an "Allow From" statement:
    <Location />
       Allow From <Linux_IP>
    </Location>
The directory definitions are modeled on similar definitions in Apache's httpd.conf file. There may be more that is necessary; I'll see if I can find more specific information that I've saved. If you have to do more, please post it to this thread so that there is complete documentation for others. Of course a consistent configuration depends on having static IP addresses on your local network.
I'm not really surprised that you didn't find much if you searched for strings including Mac or Apple; this is a purely UNIX question. The CUPS administration documentation can be found online at cups.org or even on your own machine at http://localhost:631/ or on your drive in the /usr/share/doc/cups directory.

  • When I print a Word document to a shared printer, print preview looks fine but the printed page has too much blank space at the top and doesn't print the bottom few lines.

When I print a Word for Mac document to a shared printer (that is connected to my iMac) from my Macbook Pro, print preview looks fine but the printed page has too much blank space at the top and doesn't print the bottom few lines.  I have tried to adjust the margins and the page setup settings but to no avail.  It used to print fine until recently.  Is there a way to fix it so that the printer prints what print preview shows?

I should add that when I e-mail this document to myself and print it directky from the iMac, it prints fine.
