Powerbook Screen and alluminum case problem

I think my Powerbook is defected.. My screen has these clusters of white dots on the screen, and the case has a dent in it. I have always kept my powerbook in a soft case, and kept the soft case in the hard case. What should I do to fix this?

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Chrispy.
It sounds like your PowerBook screen is suffering from 'white spots' (which afflicted some 15" PBs, including mine). Contact Apple. If your PB is still under warranty then they should replace it.
As for the dent, do you know how that came about? If that was caused by an accident or yourself then Apple will not repair it.

  • Dreamweaver CS5 crashes in split screen and other cases

    EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING!!
    It's affecting my productivity.
I'm running SP2 to Enterprise Vista
CS5 will open just fine. It will open a plain HTML file just fine. but then when I go to split screen and click on the design window I find that it hasn't completely painted the whole of the code into the design portion... in other words it has painted like half the page... and now that I've clicked on the design portion it will crash. The same will happen in reverse... if I'm already on the design window and click over to source it will crash.
I have checked my code thinking maybe there is something drastically wrong with the code that is confusing DW, but isn't that what DW is for?? to be able to edit code that doesn't work right as well as build pages and sites? I shouldn't have to go and check code in another editor. Regardless, the problem remained. (In the words of the great pessimist, Charlie Brown, "Good grief!")
Any ideas?! BTW, I had CS5 installed before and just had to recently re-image my HD. It worked fine before with the same information as above... the only difference being that my previous CS5 was an upgrade from CS4. My new install is a direct install into CS5.

What do you mean with corrupt?
Why did you suggest that I created a new profile?
There are cache files and other system files that are created every time a user account is created.  Sometimes these are corrupted in the OS and it really has no bearing on the specific application but it can lead to erratic behavior.  Creating a new user recreates all these system files and thus it's almost like starting fresh.  It's one step shy of re-installation of an OS.  So because changing the user fixed the issue, then we have eliminated the fact that the application is causing the error and we know the OS is causing the error.
I can't just go in to that profile when I want to use?
I wouldn't recommend it.  This can lead to more problems with the OS down the road with other applications and depending on where the corruption lies it can lead to issues with OS upgrades or even installing new software.  The files that are typically most critical to users are stored in the Applications folder or the Documents/Sites/Pictures folders.  You can easily drag them over to a new user account.  If you have email being backed up for a product like Thunderbird you can also bring over many of the Library items as well.

  • Macbook 11" Screen and Function Key problems.

Hi, I got a refurbished late 2010 Macbook Air from the Apple Store. Its the 11'6" 64GB version.
The MBA turned up this morning and was working fine. I shut it down and went out for a while. Upon rebooting, I noticed there was no sound (and no sound icon near the clock) and the function keys (brightness, volume, etc) were not working. So, rebooted to see if that would solve the problem and was then greeted with a display that wouldn't work. After the white bootup screen, the screen goes black. Not black as in no power, it looks backlit but appears as if the screen brightness is on 0 and can't be altered.
I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC, which didn't help. Phoned Apple, who said reset PRAM and SMC. I've got a genius appointment tomorrow but I wondered if there was anything else I could try in the meantime.
    Thanks

You should take it back and ask them for a new one. It has a lot of issues.

  • User home folders Upper and Lower case problem in FPN

    Hi Sdn,
I am facing a wiered problem in FPN. I configured FPN between EP and BI portal.
EP is using UME as LDAP
BI portal is using UME as ABAP
configured KM folders on to EP using Webdav scenario
now when I try to save KM book marks, it is saving perfectly in EP
the problem is saving bookmarks in the userfolder with Uppercase like USER
the KM favorites iView with the path (/alias/userhome/<user.id>/favorites)is trying to look into the userfolder with lowercase like user and displaying nothing
plese help me in solving this for KM iView to ignorie case
    Thanks!
    Regards
    Srinivas

    Hi Simon,
I understand that this problem is because of UME as LDAP and ABAP .
I tried to create a KM Navigational iView for favorites folder /alias/userhome/<user.id>/favorites.
but here problem is I am not able to convert user.id to Ucase
As per your suggestion, it is not possible to create one KM navigational iView to peep into multiple folders
for this the solution might be in two ways. creating KM iView to ignore case and look into the user home folder
if so, How to make the iView to ignore case
second option is to configure BEx broadcaster to publish in USER.lower folder
is so, How to achieve this
being people started using FPN most frequently and moving BI to seperate Portal and use ABAP as ume.
users will start encounter this problem most often. SAP has to come out with solution for this

  • Macbook Pro screen and keyboard lights problems

Hi there, I have a macbook pro 15'' late 2011. Lately I realised that the screen does not dim when in a dark room and the keyboard lights do not work either. The keyboard keys work for dimming and lighting the screen, but it does not happen automatically. As for the keyboard lights, pressing the F5 and F6 buttons brings up the image of keyboard lights and they seem to be increasing and decreasing, but in fact nothing happens and the keyboard remains without any lights.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks without lighted keyboards that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Early 2013 15" rMBP (LG) Screen and Power Save Problems

OK, so the first frustration is that I have this new 15" rMBP set to never sleep while on power.  I routinely come back to it, only to find that I am logged out and all of my apps have been closed.  Very annoying.  But now also this:
Only way to solve is to close lid and re-open or reboot.  Do you bright folks think this is firmware/software related or is it because I lost the lottery and got an LG screen?

When you say NEW what do you mean by that? If it is older then a couple of weeks it really isn't NEW, at least the way I think (New is I bought it yesterday to several days ago). If it is less then 14 days old take it back and return it for a full refund. Apple has a 14 day No Questions Ask Return Policy for Full Refund. Then buy another that may work correctly.
If older then 2 weeks then the only thing you can do it take it to Apple and have them fix it, if possible, or replace it with one that works correctly.

  • Screen and file sharing problem

I can connect from my MacBook Pro to my iMac when they are both on my home network. I see it in the Finder sidebar, clicking it automatically connects to its shares, and clicking Share screen does what it's supposed to do.
But when I try to connect from the MacBook Pro from the outside world (my company's network) things don't work so well. I have Back to my Mac enabled so the iMac still shows up in the sidebar but when I click on it I eventually get an error message "Connection failed". Clicking on Connect as does nothing. Clicking on Share screen gives a generic error message.
When I connect to the iMac using "Connect to server" (Command+K) it works. I have mapped the AFP and VNC ports of my Airport Extreme base station at home so they point to the iMac.
What can I do to fix this?

I'm sure you've already checked, but have you given user access to the mini via it's sharing prefpane? Not that this will fix it - I currently have five separate macs running leopard, all with file sharing for a specific folder and guest access to those folders and it only works on 3 out of the 5 (the two that aren't working are MacPros - go figure).

  • TS3533 How can I shut down my PowerBook wiyh retina display in case of black screen and nonresponsive keyboard after sleep?

Installed OS 10.82 and EFI update and put the system to sleep. Trying to wake it again resulted in black screens and an irresponsive keyboard: there seems to be no way to shut the system down in this case. My solution was to unplug the machine and let it blow the fans and run "by itself" untill it after several hours shut down because of low battery charge. After plugging it in again, it would start on key board command and now works fine.
Question: Is emptying the battery really the only way shut the laptop down in this case?

All you should need to do is push and hold the on/off button for a few seconds. It should shut it down cold.
If it doesn't you may have a defective machine.

  • Start up problem-can't get past Apple grey screen and spinning gear

Upon trying to start up my laptop, got nothing but the apple logo, grey screen and spinning gear. I tried several things to resolve the problem on my own (hardware test said it could not verify the disk/could not start up from the OS X install disk/reset the power mgmt. unit/disconnected all peripherals)and finally went to the Apple store. Genius bar said they were able to start up from their hard drive and suggested that I buy an external hard drive, go home, start up again and back up all files. I bought a My Book. Got home and same thing happened: Apple logo and spinning gear. I am an Apple user of 18 years, but have not had to do much in the way of diagnostics. Have tried fsck routine today that I found on another posting here today. If the Genius guy got it going, I assumed that I could too. I was wrong. Any advice would be appreciated. It looks like this is the end of the road for my Powerbook, but I'd like a shot at recovering data.

    Hi Debbie/Gregg -
I may have missed something but can't you just put a new hard drive in your laptops? You may not be able to recover your data but it doesn't mean the end for your computer. The same thing happened to my TiBook and I put a new 120Gig hard drive in and it's had a new lease of life.
I bought a new internal hard drive along with an external enclosure and connected it up to my computer and from there cloned it. Then I transferred the external into the TiBook and put the old drive into the external and I use that as an external now. I realise your hard drives are dead but you could use another computer to so the same thing and just install the OS on it.
    I bought this -
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=452
Then followed the instructions here -
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Ti-DVI/HD-Replacement/33/6/
Once your new hard drive is installed you may be able to try and repair the old one in the external enclosure?

A system disc can be used for these repair options also, in your case if the DVD drive is not working you can use an external dvd drive if you have one.

  • Powerbook G4 Loads to blue screen and stops!!!!

    Hi,
I am running OS x 10.5.8 on my g4 powerbook. Its been no problem since I updated several months ago. Just in the past couple days my computer has been doing many odd things. Not loading sound drivers, slow operation and most painful is that when start up happens, it loads to the blue screen and stops and will remain there for some time and I have hard reset it. Then I try again usually 2-3 times. I have completed the permission repairs and done PRAM twice. Still loads up to blue screen and remains..
    Can you please help me!!!

Try starting up from your latest OS installer CD or DVD. If the machine starts up from the disc, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu in the Installer application, select your internal hard drive, click the First Aid tab, and check the hard drive's SMART status near the bottom of the DU window. If it is Verified, run the Repair Disk routine, and if any repairs are needed, run that routine repeatedly until no further problems are noted and repaired. Then try starting the machine normally from its hard drive.
If the hard drive's SMART status is Failing, replace the drive. You can salvage un-backed-up files from it after you get your machine back up and running again.

  • Stripes on screen and problems starting up

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro which I keep thinking I need to upgrade.  It's fine when it is up and running, but when I put it into Sleep, it can take a huge amount of time to come out of sleep mode - like 15 minutes sometimes.  This was worse when the battery ran down, provided that I kept it charged it was OK.  But recently I have been unable to get the computer to come out of sleep - it's completely dead with a black screen when I open the lid.  The only way to get it to wake is to hold down the power button, then do a reboot.  This then leads to a stripey pink and grey screen, pixellated, I have to login and several times get a grey screen and nothing happening after 10 minutes.  So I keep rebooting and eventually I get a normal boot up.
I was thinking that the computer was dead, maybe a main board failure, time for an upgrade.  But then I switched off Safari and Excel, and since I have done that the computer seems to be working fine - comes straight out of sleep with no problems.  So I am wondering if this could just be a problem with Safari and / or Excel.
One other thing to mention, I took the machine into an Apple Store about 2 months ago and then ran a full diagnostic test on it and said it had no problems.  And I live in Dominican Republic, where there aren't any Apple Stores, so it is had to take it in for repair.  I am running Mavericks 10.9.2, I haven't yet upgraded to 10.9.3.

A very similar problem came up with a few users about three months ago relative to iMacs.  Turned out in their cases to be bad graphics modules in their iMacs, not same year or model so it was not a common cause failure.  They had vertical lines, some yellow, some pink, some blue...and startup problems.
Try visiting the Apple store genius bar and have the techs run their diagnostics to check out the system.

  • Blue Screen, Missing Dock and Mac HD problems

There seem to be at least three problems with my iMAC:
    1) the screen is blue even though under System Preferences, it is set for an image,
    2) the Dock is missing even though under Dock Settings, it should not be hidden and should be at the bottom (oddly when I select "right" location for the dock, the radio button does not light up, but is changed if I close and reopen the preferences screen), and
    3) clicking on the Macintosh HD does not open it or the other files (e.g., PDF, *.doc) on the Desktop.
The only recent change I made to the system was to add Clamxav for virus scans, but that was scheduled to run on Monday. I have been traveling and my spouse is not sure when the issues started.
I have tried the PRAM re-set explained elsewhere, but that did not help. Any other possible solutions?

Welcome to Discussions - my first response would be to reset the PRAM, even though yu have already done it Try doing it again and if that doesn't help, check your disk using Disk Utility:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Please post back with results, it could be a combination of problems, or it coul be corrupted preferences, try running Preferential Treatment to see if that's the case.

I have tried to restore from a chk point and still get errors. I need to gather my data off the drive so I can do a restore but I cannot get my data due to it fails in the middle of the copy. Any ideas what could be causing this.
