Powerbook screen - weird fuzzy flickering pixels

Hi
We have a Powerbook that has suddly developed a problem with its screen.
At random times, red/pink shimmering pixels will appear.
Here's a photo of the screen: http://www.v12digital.com/powerbookg4screen.jpg
They will just appear at randon, and can stay for a few seconds, or until the computer is rebooted.
I ran an extended hardware test, and everything passed. I've also reinstalled OS X 10.4 using the Erase & Install option.
This seemed to fix it, but about an hour later, the fuzzy pixels appears again.
I've seen other messages about weird screens, but they're all different to this.
I would appreciate any help with this. Any ideas as to what it could be?
Thanks.

Greetings ...
I'm no expert so can't suggest much. I have just noticed that my pixel and screen issue although recent (past 3 months) aren't nearly as severe or consistent as others in the forum. I notice the issue perhaps more when operating on battery power, text iChats, and when I have many applications open/running. My inquires lead me to believe that high temperatures have caused issues with other brand laptops. However I'm still not convinced its software and hardware related.
I have recently downloaded the iStat Menus from the Apple downloads page (free) http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/istatmenus.html. I chose the menu bar option, however there are two others to choose from including a widget. With this little utility you can monitor fan speed, temperature, cpu usage among other parameters. My fans are capable of spinning up to 2800+ RPM which I believe is adequate for cooling.
Next I downloaded Andrea Fabrizi's G4 Fan Control http://www.andreafabrizi.it/g4fancontrol/. A small (free) utility that allows you to see the temperatures of each CPU sensor and the temperature at which the fans are set to begin cooling. Best of all you can select different temperatures (lower/higher via a slider type control) for the fans to begin working, or as I've done when working in Illustrator and Photoshop while streaming music ... just slid the fan controls all the way to the left turning the fans on max rpm/cooling. I watched the cpu temp drop from 144˚F to 116˚F in about 60 seconds which is amazing. The default settings only allowed the fans to spool up to 1700 RPM which provided cooling, but nothing to drop the temps more than a few degrees. It took much higher temps to get the fans to spool up to 2800 RPM. Now I run my laptop at very "cool to the touch" temperatures.
I still have not discovered if the pixel problem is related to heat, however, I have direct control over the laptops temperature which in itself has made it more comfortable to use and hopefully will extend the life of its components.
Hope this info is helpful in diagnosing your issues ...
Cheers

  • Powerbook screen issues with blue pixels replacing colors

This is my Grandma's computer. It is a Powerbook G4 1.5 GHZ running mac os 10.5.6. It took a trip and she might have possibly dropped it. The issue is with the LCD display. Blue pixels seem to be coming on too much, especially on the edges of the screen. BASICALLY, some spots of color seem to be replaced by blue pixels. Is it a mother board issue, an LCD issue, or a display cable issue? I want to try hooking up an external monitor, but haven't done so yet.

The external monitor would be a good thing to try. If the pixel artifact also appears on the external, it would imply a problem with the graphics chip. If not, it would imply a problem with the internal display or its connections. When pixels are involved, it is often an internal display problem.
If you have the original install discs, you could also try running the Apple Hardware Test and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code.
    Good luck!

  • T41 Screen gets fuzzy / flickers

I have an older T41 laptop.  The screen always gets fuzzy when i'm using it, kind of looks like vertical lines running accross my screen.  If i shake the laptop or move it around a bit, the fuzziness usually goes away, but will come back a few minutes later.  I"m pretty sure there is some sort of loose wire or something inside.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to check this out?  Or instructions on how to open up the laptop for me to check myself?
    Thanks...

    Welcome to the forum!
I'm sorry to say that you're most likely looking at a problem that is far bigger than a loose wire...namely, a loose GPU, which is something that T4x series are infamous for...

  • Flickering Powerbook Screen then goes completely black

My powerbook screen has started flickering and then goes black. I can still see faint images on the screen, so it has not died. When it does go black I can get it to come back on by holding the the screen dimmer button down and then taking the brightness back up. The same thing will happen almost instantly. Any ideas?

Hi, I had exactly the same problem. It lasted over a year, when I positioned the display horizontally it worked fine or when I placed a laptop against a wall or something that would very lightly push the screen from the back (even a finger touch). Sometimes the display found its good position and could stay without any support for few days. So it didn't make me go repair it immediately and I kind of got used to it. Until last week when it flickered for the last time, stayed black a no pushing or no dim button would help and made me overcome my laziness to drive to Apple center. It cost me 500 shekels in israel to repair, it's around 150 USD. The repair report says that board inverter was exchanged.

  • Flickering pixelated column on screen

Hello, I recently purchased a brand new MacBook Pro 13" about a month ago, and I already have an issue:
There is on odd, pixelated collumn on the left side of the screen that keeps flickering and it will not go away- even after a shut down.
Now, I take gret care of anything I own and this MacBook is in immaculate condition. I do not download anything, I have not uploaded anything to the computer other than 5 CD's that I own to iTunes, and the only websites I visit are YouTube, Reddit, RuneScape and the occasional Twitter. I also have not changed any settings.
Does anyone know what may be causing the problem or how to fix it? I spent $1300 on this machine and I cannot and will not spend money to repair it seeing as how it should not be having any issues, ESPECIALLY this early on.
    Thank you.

Yes it does. Just bring your receipt with, though if it's a late 2013 you may not need it. I'd bring it though.
As a matter of fact, you can still buy Applecare for an additional 2 years as long as you're within that one year window. I would.

  • HP HDX16 Screen Problem (Fuzzy, blurry, flickering)

So, I'm having some issues with my HDX which has been flawless. It'sjust over 18months old.
One day all of a sudden the screen went fuzzy. I noticed when I bring the screen down (toward closing position) it then sharpens up and goes back to normal but only at that angle.
At first when this happened, the longer the laptop was on, the further I could push the screen back without it going fuzzy.
But now I can't and I can only view the screen at quite a low angle, it's very close to the keyboard. I've noticed it's going lower and lower each day!!
When the screen goes fuzzy it can be just fuzzy or even a coloured fuzz (different variety). It can also flicker to normal and fuzzy when I’m trying to find that angle where I can get a clear screen.
I’ve looked online and people have tried changing the inverter but the problem is still there, even buying a new lcd!! But it still could be one of them.
I know it’s not an lcd problem as the screen is flawless when I find that clear angle. Any suggestion please? I have a feeling it’s going to reach a point when I won’t be able to see anything at all and it’ll stay fuzzy.
I just called HP and they offer NO support for HDX models if it's got to do with the screen. But if it's for example a keyboard or non screen related problem they are willing to do an out of warranty repair.
I obviouslt questioned the guy and said it must mean you guys have a lot of screen problems but he claims all aprts are out of stock and product is discontinued. Surely they would still have a lot of parts anyway.
    Anyone else have any suggestions?

If the external display works well then there could very well be a loose connector causing the problem. That will require disassembly to investigate.
    Best regards,
    erico

  • Macbook Pro Retina display flickering pixels like tv static?

I had a group of stuck pixels in two spots on my MBPR a month ago. I have applecare. The genuis bar replaced the screen. Now I'm getting this weird staic/flickering effect all over the screen. It wasn't doing this when I first got the new screen a couple weeks ago. Nothing has happend since that I know of that would cause this. Here is a video of what's happening:
    http://youtu.be/BuF8BULrfZY
    Thanks,
    Casey

I would take it back to the Apple Store, that type of flickering should be unusal for a LED type display.  Most likely they will replace your laptop with a brand new one.

  • Full screen view fuzzy

when in full screen image fuzzy  memory100% unavailable

(I believe) I have this same issue with my Mini (1.25 G4, 1GB RAM) and a Westinghouse 24" @ 1920x1200. I think it has something to do with screen resolution and that the G4 mini (which I believe the original poster also has) has 32MB of video RAM. Setting screen size to 1600x1200 (temporarily) allows use of Time Machine. At 1920x1200, you can't use TM since the screen flickers/flashes too much.
I also have a screen invert problem in general with 10.5.4 when sometimes closing windows, so I think 10.5.x must be pretty resource intense. Still, seems like a software bug. I don't think it's hardware failure since 10.4.11 doesn't have any problems, even with graphic intense stuff.

  • My iPod touch screen went fuzzy with pink and white stripes

Hello! I really appreciate if anyone would tell me what's wrong with my iPod touch.
I have been using my iPod touch for less than a year, and honestly, I have quite a bad habit: I always use it for playing games. And sometimes, I even use it while it is charging. Usually it's fine, nothing went wrong, so I keep doing the same thing sometimes.
one day, I'm visiting my relative and tried to charge my iPod. Since my iPod doesn't have an adaptor, I usually charge it using my laptop (the seller told me to charge it in a laptop/computer). One day, I borrowed my cousin's laptop to charge my iPod, but she only gave me an adaptor (not made for iPod or any apple products, but it fits so I thought it's okay). But the next day, I found out that my iPod went off by itself and I know that my battery isn't low.
I Tried to charge it using my laptop at home, but it still went off! Also, it went normal in my laptop (the iTunes appeared automatically, as a sign that my iPod is charging). So, I tried to restore it and I worked (at least I thought so), until I saw my screen went fuzzy (pink and white stripes). So, almost everyday I turn off my iPod, turn it on again, wait for a while, then use it normally. Usually it lasts 'normal' for hours, but it will still be error as usual.
    So, my question is:
What makes my iPod touch screen went fuzzy?
Is it because I used it while charging?
Is it because I charged it with an adaptor that is not made for Apple products?
please help me, I don't know what else to do! I have restored it, I didn't download many applications like I used to before, and I left it alone when I was charging (I didn't play it while it's charging any more), and I even didn't turn on the Wi-Fi if I'm not using it (I almost NEVER turn off the Wi-Fi before my iPod touch went error)
    Thank you for answering..

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • How do I get my Iphone 4S screen to stop flickering and jumping?

My 15 month old Iphone 4S's screen has recently starting jumping and flickering and will not stop.
First began in my camera but would stop when I turned the camera to the front to see my face, then when switched back to the other side it would begin jumping again, (roughly a month ago). Then it started happening in any apps that involved my camera, snapchat, instagram, etc. today.
Now, my screen always flickers and jumps in all apps and when on my home and lock screen.
    IOS is up to date.
    No cracks on screen.
Continues to do so even after resetting and restoring iphone, and changing my brightness up and down.
    Background moving is turned off.
Flickering is worse at the bottom of the screen.
Screen was replaced six months ago.

Sorry I can't help but I literally just posted the exact same thing on this website my 4s screen on camera flickers and jumps and in snapchat and slo pro ( slo motion camera ) will this turn to the home screen aswell I've already had a problem with the screen once !!

  • My iPad screen is fuzzy, not sharp

My iPad screen is fuzzy, not sharp.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

  • Is there a way to repair screen burn and flickering after an update

I was updateing my 4s and it froze on the downloading screen. It wouldnt finish loading and it wouldnt shut off. I thought it would die and then I could reset it but it never did. I did a soft reset on it and it booted up but had a halo effect around the edge of the screen and the whole back light was flickering. It was stuck like this for over 8 hrs and I couldnt fix it.  I finally got it in dfu mode and restored it. It worked but the halo around the screen and the flickering is still here. Is there any way to fix this?

Different folks have different workflow requirements...
I know one person who keeps a separate catalog for exports. Me? I keep trees of exported copies synchronized in Lightroom via publish services (not added to the catalog), but then use ACDSee to deal with them externally - Lightroom for sources only.
Some people have separate branches of the same catalog for exported rgb versions vs. sources.
If you only export to upload, print, or email..., then exporting on demand (and not adding to catalog) makes sense, but then you can't use your photos as a screen saver, or serve them via DLNA...
One thing is for sure, if you use Lightroom for cataloging exports as well as sources, it adds complexity.
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Dropped my ipad and now the screen is fuzzy can I fix?

dropped my ipad and now the screen is fuzzy, can it be fixed?

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restart / Reset   >  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Restoring  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...

  • Won't respond.  Have a blue screen that keeps flickering.

My MacBook pro is not responding.  It has a blue screen that keeps flickering.  Power button does not even work.

Safe Boot by restarting your computer while holding down the "shift" key.  Safe booting disables all nonessential processes, often times allowing you to start up when you would otherwise crash.
As of OS X 10.5.6 Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache location in the /var/db/dyld directory.  A corrupt cache here can cause the blue screen crash.  Once you restart normally, the cache will be recreated.  This should take care of the issue.
