Powerbook Spitting Leopard Disk Out After Boot, Clicking Noise also!!

Hi, i put the leopard installation disk into my powerbook and it makes this weird clicking noise but still can find the disc. I click on install and reboot my machine and then a grey screen comes up and the dvd drive starts clicking again and then spits the disc out! How can i fix this??
Thanks Sam x

Is the Leopard disk a retail install disk like this:
!http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/248/2041/1500/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/ MB576AV1?wid=45&hei=40&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&opusm=0.5,0.5,0,0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp!
or the grey system disk from a newer Mac. A retail disk should read on any DVD drive; a system disk could be dual-layer and the only PowerBooks with a DL Superdrive were the last ones with Machine ID of PowerBook5,8 and 5,9. Also, a system disk for an Intel Mac will not install OSX at all on an older Mac with a PowerPC processor like the PowerBook.

Free solutions are the best, although if I have to pay I will, I would prefer to not have to buy an external burner if possible and already know that is an option so please don't give me that answer... thank you for any help you can give

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.

  • Possible to use Leopard disk to install Boot Camp on 10.4.1 ?

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.4.1, and I have a number of Mac programs that are not yet compatible with Leopard. I would like to install Boot Camp, but I can't install Leopard until those programs are updated. I have already purchased Leopard (but haven't installed it), so I do have the Leopard disk. (I was asleep at the wheel and didn't download the Boot Camp beta before it was pulled.)
Is it possible for me to use the Leopard disk to install Boot Camp on my 10.4.1 system now, but wait to make the Leopard OS upgrade later?
    Thanks

Ah. There may be other mirrors around.
You may be able to install just Boot Camp Assistant from the Leopard DVD, but I'd be a little suspicious about how well it would work, and whether it would cause other problems. You should certainly be able to use the Leopard DVD instead of burning a drivers CD.
If you can't locate a copy of Tiger BCA, you might want to look at some of the posts that describe doing all of this manually - mostly that's creating a partition that Windows can use. Disk Utility will want to erase the entire drive to add a partition, though, which you may not be willing to do. Some third-party partition utilities claim to be able to do this without a reformat. Regardless of what path you take, be sure you have a good backup of anything not easily reinstalled or restored from other places!

  • All options are greyed out after i Click on Apply Maitenance

    Hi All,
I am upgrading our EPM system from 11.1.2.1 to 11.1.2.2. I have downloaded all the required files from e-delivery.oracle .com and unzipped them. I selected Apply Maintenance and when i clicked next all the options are greyed out. I am not sure what i have done wrong. I am using the same user ID which was used for installation of hyperion 11.1.2.1.
    Kindly help me out.

From your screenshot it says that 11.1.2.2 Foundation has been installed when it should say 11.1.2.1 like this - http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J_9A8U41JS0/T5WXO3JQtxI/AAAAAAAAEj8/0nqcNdo1bFQ/s1600/image022.png
Also you should only have the option to "Apply maintenance release" like this - http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1zQHVCODSr0/T5WXNLQN4YI/AAAAAAAAEj4/vNQ_vOT03_8/s1600/image021.png in your screenshot you also have the option to Re-install the release.
Are you definitely sure the environment has had nothing applied to it.
    Cheers

I went to the toolbar, clicked on View, then Zoom, then Zoom Out. It does Zoom Out, but after I click a link or go to another web page, it Zoom's right back in. How do I keep it Zoomed Out where I want it permanetly?

My forward and back buttons are greyed out after update to Firefox 8. Tried to move to 9 beta, but same behavior. Back and Forward also greyed out in right click menu.

  • Hp Pavilion dv7 Sound goes in and out and makes clicking noise

Recently my laptop has been having wierd audio issues and I'm not sure the cause. The laptop will get about 10-15 minutes into a movie or any sound extensive activity and the sound starts cutting in and out and making a weird clicking noise every time it does. One think I found helped sometimes was to plug in headphones into the headphone jack, however the laptop would randomly switch between the headphones and the external speakers on the laptop even if left alone. Sometimes it will just play out of the external speakers perfectly fine if I had headphones plugged into the jack. I was thinking that it may be the sound card, but I honestly don't know. Could someone share some insight on my problem?

Learn How to Post and More. Thank you for posting. I have read your post, and I understand that you are experiencing issues with speakers and headphones. The sound switches between the devices. And if you do not use headphone, the speakers will not work in 10 -15 minutes, and it will not play the sound right. Please test your laptop along the steps on this document HP Notebook PCs - No Sound from Speakers (Windows 8) And let me know if it helps. Regards,

  • Bought Mac OSX Snow Leopard, half way through install it spits the disk out and does nothing. Any advice?

It's a iMac version 10.5.8. Would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Are you able to boot the computer to your Leopard system? If so then first:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Clean the Snow Leopard DVD with alcohol and a lint-free cloth from center to rim to be sure there are no finger prints, scratches, or dirt. They try again.

  • OVMS - Local display cuts out after boot DMS 59 Video Card

    Hey All -
We use OVM/OVS on what you might call 'desktop servers'. We have several setup. We recently purchased some more machines that I am installing OVS onto and will add them to the cluster.
However, these machines only video connection is DMS 59. As such, we are using a default DMS 59 to DVI splitter, and then just running a single connection from the splitter to a DVI capable monitor.
Using this, OVS can be installed. However, on each successive boot after installing the display will show GRUB, the boot, and then right before OVS loads its console the display ceases to function.
Now I assume this has to do with our DMS 59 connections - but I can't find any documentation about why this may not be supported or if I am missing a driver.
    Thoughts?

The bug is known, and a patch has been submitted: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80151. There's been no update since friday, so I wonder what the current status is, or if it's up for review at all.
Does anyone know how we can be notified when this patch hits the kernel?

  • Lost disk space after Boot Camp partion crash

I was partitioning my 160GB (I have about 70GB free space) with the Boot Camp assistant, when my computer kernel panicked. I had to restart, and when I logged in again I was missing about 10GB of space. I did an "Erase Free Space" w/ Disk Utility, but to no avail. Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

Also note, that you can partition your HD with Disk-Utility running off the Install Disk to create a FAT partition for bootcamp. The next time you run Bootcamp it will allow you to use that partition to install WIndows.
I went through 3 Kernel Panics, trying to create the FAT Partition with the boot camp asssistant, always having to fix the HD with the method above.

  • I'm trying to reformat my macbook 2007 edition and have erased the partition, and trying to install from the Snow Leopard disk but after language screen it says "System cannot be installed on this computer." any suggestions?

I have tried erasing and moving forward, erasing partition and creating new partition using GUID, no solution yet, keeps giving me same message.

Did you check if your Macbook meets the requirements for Snow Leopard?

  • 10.5.3 Update Crashed Now no boot + clicking noise

There seems to be many similar problems to mine posted, but the solutions there aren't helping.
My software update crashed at 86%. I assume it was installing 10.5.3 but I didn't see that specified. Since then, I have not been able to get past the grey screen and the spinning gear. I've tried the following:
    1) Hard restart and then booting into safe mode (holding shift).... no dice
    2) Holding option after a hard restart and booting with the system disk. From there I ran the disk check. I got a "this drive is okay" (or something to that effect) but the disk utility wouldn't let me out. I had to foce quit the disk utility.
    3) After another hard reset, I tried repairing disk permissions. It stalled a third of the way in. Had to do another hard reset.
*The scariest part is that when I see the grey screen (and also when I got stalls after 2 and 3 above), the macbook started softly clicking at me.*
Is the computer screwed or did Apple totally botch the 10.5.3 updater? Is my computer now caught in limbo, having had the updater crash?

I think your HD is bad. Downloading a large file such as 10.5.3 may show up a HD defect that downloading smaller files does not. Many times the "top" of our HD is not used and may be bad without us noticing anything. But when we download a large file which attempts to write over a bad area of the HD, we see a problem.
I would boot into your Leopard DVD and run DU from it, repairing both the HD and the permissions.
Any HD errors would indicate to me a need to replace the HD ASAP.
Be sure your backup is up to date.

  • Won't install. Spits disk out.

I am currently running on tiger, and just received the disk to upgrade to snow leopard. I keep putting it in and it spits it out or it will let me click install and it will try to restart and spit the disk out in the middle of restarting. I want to Upgrade, not erase my data and start from scratch. What can I do?

In addition to what sig asks, is the disc in good shape, free of any scratches or contaminants like smudges? Are you sure your Mac has at least 1 GB of working memory installed? (If you are unsure about this, open System Profiler, click on "memory" in the list on the left & make sure each memory slot says "OK" in the last column & the total of the sizes add up to 1 GB or more.)
