Powerbook Start-Up issue: Disk 3 errof

Hello
when I try to start my Powerbook, it says 'darwin/bsd powerbook" and then Log-in. I put 'reboot' into the Log-in - it then asks me for my password. When I put in my password, it tells me it is incorrect and then says 'disc 3 error"
Can anyone help??

Sometimes the easiest is the answer, try hitting the F2 key to bring up the brightness.
Hopefully your video is OK, maybe try hooking up an external monitor.
Target Disk Mode would also be in the mix of things to try.

  • Need Advice About Powerbook Start-up Issue

Hi all, I've been having issues with my Powerbook recently. First, was the narcoleptic thing that had been going on since November - that was fixed by Apple two weeks ago.
However, when I got it back, the PB would go to sleep early despite the SP settings, and/or shut down if I left my PB on battery power.
Today, the Powerbook will not startup. It will chime, but after that the display just stays black. The fans are running, but that's it.
I tried: the PMU reset, zapping PRAM (it won't do it), booting from the installer disk, booting from the hardware test, T-starting into my G5, etc. I also tried booting AC only and battery only. Still the display stays black, and I have to hold down the power button for it to turn off.
Any suggestions would be great...would like to avoid sending it into Apple again, but maybe that's unavoidable, short of purchasing another laptop?
    Thanks!

  • Start up issues/ disk utility question

I can't get my iMac to start up past the grey apple screen. I booted off my Tiger disk and ran disk utility. My permissions were ok, but when I try and verify and repair the HD I get the following errors:
    'invalid key length
    invalid node structure
    rebuilding catalog B tree
    failure on exit'
Any sugestions. I really don't want to lose my current work by reformatting.
    Thanks,
    Tyler

Same problem with me. Happened on Monday while I was doing a complete backup (using Backup software) before installing Leopard on my Powerbook G4. The computer took ages to restart (and a significant number of hard restarts). Everything seemed to be back to normal (except the wallpaper which had disappeared).
Then I installed Leopard after a complete reformatting of my hard disk. Leopard seemed to be working OK.
Last night, after a restart (normal restart, after re-installing some software), the problem came back : extremely slow start (more than one hour), and slow response afterwards. No wallpaper, everything extremely slow.
I managed to run Disk Utility and found a "Invalid Node Structure" error.
What are the odds of that happening twice in a week ? Can the problem survive a reformatting of the hard drive ?
Or does it simply mean my hard drive is dying ?

  • PowerBook G3 (PDQ) - Startup disk and PCMCIA slot problem

    Hello
I have encountered a problem with my powerbook G3 (PDQ model)
Once when I had to configure my microphone, I saw that there was "Zoomed video" present in the list of audio inputs.
I thought this was a glitch, and inserted my SD card reader into the lower PCMCIA slot. Then my display got messed up.
The slot insertion doesn't seem to work right too, it resists much more than the top slot does.
It didn't react to anything except Fn-Shift-Ctrl-Power, which is Reset.
It happens in both OS9 and 10.2.
    Photo: http://instagr.am/p/NtWNH/
Once I was able to insert it right so it wouldn't mess up, and i used the reader in the lower slot as usual.
When I ejected it, the card didn't pop out as usual and it was hard to pull out, and the screen was messed up as well.
The second problem is that when I start the "Startup Disk" control panel in OS9, the PowerBook hangs for no particular reason, also reacting to Reset only.
Maybe there is a bootloader I can install so I'd choose the OS I want before actually booting anything?
Could these problems be related to each other, or a dead battery? Maybe to the incorrectly set clock (however doesn't seem so)? Or related to using an Apple DVD drive?
    Thanks,
    ~ Vladislav Korotnev

No it hasn't. What kind of battery does it use?
The power battery is dead as well (not charging nor powering the pb)

  • Shortly after starting up, a dark 'film' slowly comes down over the screen and I get a message saying I have to shut down the computer.  I've tried to start from the disk, and before I can even run a repair off utilities, it happens again.  What's up?

When I started my iMac today, it started beeping like an alarm horn.  I shut it down, and held the startup button a little longer to get it to start.  Shortly after starting up, a dark 'film' slowly comes down over the screen and I get a message saying I have to shut down the computer.  I've tried to start from the disk, and before I can even run a repair off utilities, it happens again.  What's up?  Am I screwed?  HELP!!

What you are seeing is a kernel panic, often but not always connected with a hardware or peripheral issue, so, unplug everything except mouse and  keyboard, reboot and hold the shift key as soon as your hear the chime, continue holding it until you see the Apple Icon and spinning progress indicator, then post back.
It will take noticeably longer than normal to start.

  • MAJOR Start-up Issues:  Can my imac be saved?

    Hello all-
I sure hope someone can help me. I am really worried about the state of my imac. It is only ONE YEAR old and has always been maintained with the latest updates.
Quick background: A few weeks ago, while in screensaver mode, I returned to my mac to find a white screen with a folder and a question mark. I had never seen this before! It was frozen. I had to force shut down by holding the button on back. Since that time, the same thing has sporadically happened when the computer was in screensaver mode. In the last few days the problem has worsened with start up issues. Yesterday, when i started up the computer I kept getting just a blank white screen and what sounded like "a slow revving" of the disc several times and then nothing. After continually trying to restart (including in Safe Mode) eventually I got the apple logo and it started. When that happened, I immediately backed up everything for fear my hard drive is dying and then began to troubleshoot.
What I've tried: After looking through the threads I have tried a number of suggestions.
    - I repaired the Disk using First Aid (it says all was Okay)
    - I repaired permissions
    - I disconnected all cords & reset the SMC
    - I booted from the disc & ran the Extended Apple Hardware Test (it said all appears Okay)
After doing these things last night, the computer started up several times just fine so I shut it down for the night.... which brings me to this morning!
Start up was MUCH worse than yesterday. Same slow revving sound, white screen and nothing (at least 10 times) - even when trying Safe Mode. Then it worsened to a black screen and no sound at all - as if nothing was happening. I thought it was dead! I unplugged the power cord for 15 seconds and tried again - this changed it back to the white screen and a sound of more revving power. After about 3 tries, I got the apple logo and the spinning wheel for about 2 minutes - then it started!
This is where I am now. I am afraid to turn it off and not sure what else to try. I thought after all I did last night, the problem was fixed. Why does the hardware test and repair disc say all is fine? And why after doing those things last night did it start up numerous times? (and speedy too!) But then this morning I'm back where i started.... ? How can I troubleshoot this problem further?
I would really like to try everything before resorting to taking it in. Money is tight right now.
    GREATLY appreciate any advice!
    Thanks a lot,
    Karen

Warning!! ** (See bottom of post)
New Development: From Disk Utility, I chose to run "verify disk" again. (Somewhere I had read that sometimes, it needs to be run a few times before it will find a problem with the disk).
Sure enough! This time I got errors and it suggested I repair the disk!
Errors in verify mode were in RED as follows:
    Invalid index key
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
I then restarted with the system disc, opened First Aid and chose Repair.
The following showed up in RED during the repair process:
    Invalid index key
    Incorrect number of thread records
    Invalid directory item count
volume bit map needs minor repair
    Invalid free block count
    volume header needs minor repair
And finally in GREEN (after 10 min):
    HD Repaired Successfully
** After doing this, and trying to restart, i get the white screen and the spinning wheel indefinitely. (even when i try Safe Mode) It appears I can no longer boot my HD. I wanted to share the errors above incase it brings anyone to any further insight, but I'm not so sure it helped my situation.
    Suggestions?

  • Powerbook start up problems....AGAIN

    hi!
about a month back i had start up issues w/my 17" g4 powerbook. i had to have the whole computer wipped out and and have programs re-installed.
thought everything was all fine...UNTIL...this afternoon i tried to open an email, stepped away and when i came back there was all this type all over my screen saying system failure!!
as of this moment i'm doing a fsn single user start-up. does anyone know why this happening? i've had my pb for 2 yrs and i've had my g4tower for YEARS and nothing has ever happened like this!
    thanx!
    -s

Hey I actually had the same problem with my old 15in PB G4. I had a kernel panic after a few years of fluid operation, then suddenly, I began having startup problems. I couldn't even get to the log in screen so after a fresh install of Tiger, it seemed to work. I came to realize that my logic board has fried beyond belief, well it seems a lot of 15in PB users are having the same problem. My lower RAM slot had failed and I was unfortunately out of warranty. My best guess is to either send it in if you have AppleCare or are still under warranty. If not, check your system through "About this Mac" and see if you have all your RAM being recognized. I believe it has something to do with the logic board. A costly repair but hopefully it isn't. Hope this helps a little...

  • Com.ms.securityExceptionEx in IE -- started from local disk

    Hi,
I use an applet that connects via intranet to a database. I know about all the security issues related to that, but here's the problem:
** it used to work: **
    - starting the applet from my local disk, it did work before in the browser (IE, security settings medium or low). starting it from the file/web server, it didn't work due to the security issues ('access denied').
    - changing the java.policy settings and using the plug-in and HTMLCOnverter, it obviously did work also when loading from file/web server.
    ** it doesn't work anymore: **
    - days later, it doesn't work anymore without using the plug-in. security settings low, starting from local disk!! The message is:
    com.ms.securityExceptionEx[myapplet.mymethod]: cannot access myhost.
I found this error message here in the forum, but often related to sockets or rmi. My applet is as simple as you can imagine and doesn't use any sockets or rmi. It works using appletviewer. Microsoft says sth. like 'an untrusted applet tries to execute a trusted method'. Something messed up with my IE? Is there any java.policy-like file or option for IE?
    Thanks for any help

  • Start up issue after upgrading to OS X Yosemite 10.10

Recently i have updated to OS X Yosemite from Maverick. I am unable to start my system normally. I need to give CTRL+R all the time when i need to start. And at half way loading (below apple icon) it is taking long time(More than 20 mins). Then i am going with Start up using disk option.
Kindly help me in fixing this and making my Mac to start up normally.

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

  • HT201372 Failed to start erase of disk due to error (-9999, 0). A error occurred erasing the disk.

Tried the recommendations in this article, however ran into the  error posted below.
Creating a bootable OS X installer in OS X Mavericks
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath "/Applications/Install OS X Mavericks.app"
    Ready to start.
To continue we need to erase the disk at /Volumes/Untitled.
If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return: Y

Is there an updated document ?
    MacBook 13" white - Early 2009 model

Oh, createinstallmedia only runs on OS 10.9!  Oh!  The 9999 is if you try to run it on an earlier OS!  Oh! Linc means to update the current drive to Mavericks, and then one will be able to run createinstallmedia, if one has first saved away a copy of the installer.
But if, like me, you are trying to create an installer to do a clean install on an empty drive, without replacing the earlier OS on your current drive, then...
You must use the slightly more complicated instructions you can find all over the place that look like
Right click "Install OS X Mavericks.app" and show package contents
Find a certain .dmg file and double click
Find a hidden .dmg within the drive that mounts from the first .dmg
Double-click or use "mount" on the hidden .dmg within the .dmg
Use Disk Utility to "restore" the second disk image onto the erased USB drive
Then replace an alias folder with a copy of a huge folder within the first disk image
I had success with the "Option 2: Use Disk Utility" section here.

  • Powerbook G4 fax issue

question: how to troubleshoot powerbook G4 fax issue, recently upgraded to 10.4.6 from 10.3.x and can no longer fax a document using internl modem. After selecting doco/comand print (as part of faxing procedure) generates a "preparing" window, as well as a error printing window.

I don't have a ready answer for the faxing. but suggest first doing the free upgrade to OS10.4.11, which is the last version. Perhaps that fixed it. Software Update should do it.

  • How to always start up in disk select mode?

How do I do that? Sometimes when I need to start my bootcamp partition to make some changes to Windows, and I just forgot to hold the Option key, I'll just have to wait for it to boot up in Mac OS, and then restart again. How do I just make the computer always start up in disk select mode, so I don't have to hold the Option key?

the only way to do that is by using rEFIt
