Powerbook start up problems....AGAIN

hi!
about a month back i had start up issues w/my 17" g4 powerbook. i had to have the whole computer wipped out and and have programs re-installed.
thought everything was all fine...UNTIL...this afternoon i tried to open an email, stepped away and when i came back there was all this type all over my screen saying system failure!!
as of this moment i'm doing a fsn single user start-up. does anyone know why this happening? i've had my pb for 2 yrs and i've had my g4tower for YEARS and nothing has ever happened like this!
thanx!

Hey I actually had the same problem with my old 15in PB G4. I had a kernel panic after a few years of fluid operation, then suddenly, I began having startup problems. I couldn't even get to the log in screen so after a fresh install of Tiger, it seemed to work. I came to realize that my logic board has fried beyond belief, well it seems a lot of 15in PB users are having the same problem. My lower RAM slot had failed and I was unfortunately out of warranty. My best guess is to either send it in if you have AppleCare or are still under warranty. If not, check your system through "About this Mac" and see if you have all your RAM being recognized. I believe it has something to do with the logic board. A costly repair but hopefully it isn't. Hope this helps a little...

  • New MB Pro; start-up problems (again)

In case you remember me, yes I am the same person who recently bought a MB Air and had lots of problems off the bat (some of which required repair by Apple). It is working fine now, but it was just not working out for my needs. So, I decided to suck it up, switch to the Pro and sell that Air.
Now the PRO is giving me start-up problems. Gah! I made a fresh Time Machine back-up from the Air...then used Time Machine upon initial set-up to transfer everything to my Pro (thinking I was wiser this time, doing it upon initial set-up). But...no go. First my Pro would not recognize my admin password and I had to reset that. Now that I'm into my system, iPhoto will not open (I get a window vaguely stating there is some problem that it then reports to Apple); Calendar and Notes just show big question marks in the dock.
I opened a new user account to see what would happen: in that account, Notes and calendar seem just fine, but iPhoto still will not open.
Furthermore, in my support research I keep coming across stuff that talks about the install disk....But never saw one! Am I supposed to have one, or are the new Pros like the Air (in having online reboot sytem)? I did not see any disks in my box (which of course is currently not where I can access it to double check). The only place the disk could have been is underneath the frame inside the box, but there is usually nothing under there, so I don't think I had one. Could this be right?
Other possibly useful (?) info: I bought the Pro w an 8GB RAM upgrade, which was installed right in store. When I opened a new user account I got a window talking about "automatic login" and how the computer would start to an account that was named after the store where I bought the computer if i did not turn it off. I did turn it off but I would like to get rid of this "store account"...but is not listed as a User acct so I don't know how to find it in order to get rid of it.
    Help?!

Thanks for the input. I totally agree that I'd like to take this one back and exchange for a new one. Only problem is that I am traveling for work internationally until after the 14-day deadline. It's quite a hassle to get back to the US in time, though I have it in my back pocket to push for an extention to that time period...
Meanwhile, I had my 3rd Apple Support chat today. They finally gave me a dedicated Sr. Advisor who managed to get the Lion erase and install to take this time. (I didn't pay for the Mountain Lion upgrade; one thing having gone right!) I have to get green-lighted for another free Mountian Lion upgrade but at least we're on track at this point. Fingers crossed it continues that way!
At the rate they're going with me this summer, I should think a discounted AppleCare is in order or SOMETHING. Gah!
For any future problem-having readers, I'm afriad they did not seem to understand/answer why this was happening, so I've no wisdom to impart!
    For the responders: Thanks again!

  • G4 PowerBook start up problem

    Weird problem here - with a friend's 15" PowerBook G4.
Once turned off, it takes many start up trials before the machine will finally boot to the desktop again - sometimes up to 20 tries!
Pushing the power button will get no start up chime/sound & black screen - so the only indicator that the machine is actually running, will be the faint humming of the hd spin - or hitting the Caps Lock key to see the light come on.
Running Disk Utility from an external drive found no problems - TechTook Pro came up with 1 bad black in the Surface Scan.
Can one bad block cause this issue, or is there something more substantial ?
    Hardware Test maybe ?

With a bad block in the surface scan, I'd backup as much information as possible first*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
You may be having a dying hard drive, or simply a bad directory because of an improper shutdown.
If the machine's clock battery hasn't been replaced in 4 years, it may be time to replace it. If issues persist after replacing it, check resetting the power manager, and then resetting the pram. If none of that appears to help, you can try the hardware test, but if that doesn't show anything I'd take it in to Apple, or if out of AppleCare one of these repair places:

  • G4 Powerbook start up problems

I have an old Powerbook G4 867 MHz PowerPc, I recently updated the memory now at 1.12 GB. The computer recognized it and it was working for a couple of weeks. Then two days ago I installed OS X 10.4.11 it worked for one day with no problems. I installed Firefox, Messenger and all the updates. I also uploaded about 8GB of my old files that were stored on my roommates Mac desktop. Now I am experiencing problems in start up. It takes forever to boot, after a few minutes it goes to the rotating pinwheel image where it stays for at least 5 minutes. It also makes a sparatic beeping noise from the hard drive. Since day one I have had multiple problems with this computer and the fact that I am basically ******** doesn't help. I took it to the apple store where it wouldn't even boot up.
Since the case has damage the Genius told me it wasn't worth fixing. The hard-rive looked like it was shot and apple wouldn't touch it with the condition it was in. Then when I returned home it started with no problem. It has since worked until this recent problem. Previously when I would run a disk utility it would get stuck while verifying permissions. This was with the original software installed and the hard-rive with no personal files. I am a returning student who can't afford to not have this working. Please help! It just started up but running very slow. Please help!!

If the machine does not turn off when on mains, you may want to see if there is data corruption in what's telling it to shut down. Initially attempt a data recovery with the appropriate tools on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Once data is recovered, then attempt to repair the directory:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
If you can't do a data recovery, it may be you just need to replace the clock battery on the machine to get the power to work normally again. That's a service technician call. You can usually also extract the hard drive from the machine to attempt a data recovery from another machine if there isn't enough power to allow it to turn on in Target Mode. That may be less costly than replacing the clock battery.
The clock battery can go out after 4 years.
If after replacing the clock battery, you can't seem to get the machine to boot normally, and your data is backed up, and you can't fix the directory, that's when to give up on the machine.

  • Start up problem (again)

A few weeks ago I've asked help with this question: http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=N_Series_Lenovo_3000&message.id=5959#M5959
For time it helped, but it is the same again, but this time I do not have any devices atachet to my laptop. Now it loads only second time, no mater or it was previously shut down or hibernated.
    Any suggestions?
    Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 2GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD

Hmm... still no use - laptop loads but maybe in third time (sometimes second, sometime seventh). When restarting it is all okay, but even left on sleep mode for long time on "waking up"it turns off. Even by pressing F8 it crashes.
Other people have the same problem with a different versions of OS.
    http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=N_Series_Lenovo_3000&thread.id=6555
User yangtze has the same problem:
"This is my first posting to the Lenovo forum and regrettably it's to report the same (I think) problem.
    Lenovo 3000 N200 running XP that we've only had for a few months. Type 0769 S/N L3-xxxxx 08/02.
First, it would get about 10 seconds normally into bootup, say to the Microsoft Windows XP loading screen, then abruptly power off. It would do this 1, 2, or 3 times, but then on the next try it would boot up normally. Eventually I rang technical support who suggested it might be a problem with one of the service programs and that I should try reinstalling the operating system.
Before I could get round to doing this the problem worsened. Now when I press the on button it gives me the "Windows did not start successfully" screen, then when I try to "start Windows normally" or "start with last known configuration" it does the same thing: I get the Windows XP loading screen for about 30 seconds, then I get the Lenovo/Intel white startup screen, then it loops back to the "Windows did not start successfully" screen.
For the last 3 days it has done this with battery in or out, power cable in or out, all combinations of battery and cable, I've tried the hard reset trick, etc.. I cannot boot up successfully at all now. When I press the Lenovo Care button to interrupt startup it takes me to the Rescue and Recovery 4 intro screen but then just hangs there. The only thing it will then do is power off when I hold down the power button for a few seconds, and I'm back to square one.
Reading this thread has made me very worried. Is it simply that this machine is of very poor build quality? Is it simply a software error with an easy fix? Is there a defective batch of motherboards out there? If I receive new components, how long before the problem repeats if the issue is a defective hardware batch, or defective design, and will I then be out of warranty period? How widespread is this problem, and is it just the 3000 N200 or is it a problem with many Lenovo models? Are these machines still being sold through retailers?
There seem to be many questions with few answers at the moment. I am willing to submit my machine to Lenovo engineers if this might help to find a permanent fix, but I don't want to persevere with a poor product if this or related problems will repeat due to poor build quality.

  • PowerBook G4 Start-up problem

    Start-up problem ---
    1. When I recently ran OnyX, I was told to run the Apple’s Disk Utility from the Start-up Disk.
    2. However, before doing this, I ran the Disk Utility from the hard drive, but the program would not complete the “Repair” function. It just got “stuck” and I had to stop the repair.
    3. While running the Disk Utility from the Start-up disk, I got the following message: “Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and re-launch Disk Utility.”
    4. I did quit and re-launch Disk Utility but received the same error message.
    5. Took PowerBook to Apple store and technicians ran diagnostics (for several days), couldn’t identify problem even though computer wouldn’t start after they ran full set of diagnostics.
    6. I reinstalled the OS 10.5 from scratch, reformatting my hard drive. Then, I re-installed all programs and documents, etc. Seemed to work OK.
    7. Tried to run OnyX, but the computer froze. Ran Disk Utility from the start-up driver and it repair hundreds of permissions as well as “repair disk” function (hundreds of items).
    8. While the PowerBook is running OK right now, am concerned about possible hardware failure.
    Any thoughts/ideas?
    Thanks.

Download Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php . It will enable you to see the values of the SMART sensors, and can give you insight into the health of the drive.
When you ran repair disk from the OS X DVD, did it complete normally? No 'failure on exit' message?

  • Since update, start up problems.  Must push start button, must enter password several times, long wait times, must push start button again and enter password again.

Since update I have start up problems.  Laptop seems to shut down.
Must push start button, then wait to enter password.  Long wait time, then screen goes black and I must push start button again and enter password again.  More long wait times.  Startup each morning takes up to ten minutes.
I have 4GB Memory and 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 Processor.

Does it start up normally in safe mode?

  • When I only want to close the current window to return to the previous window, the whole firefox site closes down, I end up back at my desktop & have to start all over again. How can this be fixed?

If I close a window I should be back at the previous window that I was at when I followed a link to this window. At least that's the way Internet Explorer works, which I have used for years. The only thing that prevents me from using Firefox exclusively is that it is very time consuming to have to start all over again from scratch every time I close a window. For instance, say I type "cats" into the search box. It gives me links to a list of "cats" sites. I go to a "cats" website, decide I don't like it so close the window to return to my list of sites, but instead of returning me to the list, I end up at my desktop. Then I have to start all over, just like I had not even been online. Very aggravating. I don't know how else to describe the problem, I can't believe that other people haven't had a similar complaint, unless I just have some settings wrong?

Now up to Firefox 8 and the problem persists. Cannot go to the www.turnitin.com page and login as I used to do -- Firefox does not remember my username or password.
Still works on Windows, and with other browsers... It would be great if a fix is available.

  • I can no longer receive e-mail messages through my @mac/@me account. I can still send e-mail messages, though. I believe there may have been recent attempts to hack into my account. I have changed my password, but wonder how to start receiving mail again?

I can no longer receive e-mail messages through my @mac/@me account, though I still seem to be able to send messages. I believe there may have been recent attempts to hack into my Mail account (my LinkedIn and Facebook accounts were both hacked three days ago and a scam/phishing message sent to my contacts, and I know there was at least an attempt made to hack into one of my e-mail accounts). I have already changed my Apple password, but how do I start receiving mail again?
(And I should also say that I'm a little surprised there was no alert from Apple of suspicious activity on my account, if such was the case. Instead, when I logged into my account via Mobile Me three days ago I noticed that all messages in my inbox were gone as well as all of my contacts. I assume this was related to the current problem.)
    Thanks for all responses.

The problem has been solved with the help of a MobileMe online counsellor. My MobileMe account had in fact been hacked into and the fraudster had been redirecting my e-mail messages to a phony account that he controlled. We took the forward off and reset all my passwords and security questions, which solved the immediate problem.
    Thx.

  • HT2558 I am trying to upload software but each time I am asked to upload a box pops up with install and restart. I press this, the computer restarts and I start all over again. No authentication icon appears.

I am trying to update software on my macbook pro. From the apple menu, I click "check updates", software is then checked and a list presented of software that I require downloading. I then tick the relevant applications. The blue bar with "install and restart" appears, I press this, the computer goes into restart mode, I login and start all over again.
i seem to be in a loop! No authentical dialogue box appears for me to enter my name and password.
    Any suggestions please!

Hi, try a refresh that'll bypass the cache with the Shift key + F5 (or Shift-click on reload) which is the same as clearing your browser cache (Ctrl+F5 for the Internet Exploder). If that doesn't work, then you can try a new firefox [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles profile] just to see if it's (your) Firefox-related or maybe an actual problem with the site (maybe starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] can be a quicker check).

iPod classic hard drive needle sometimes skips (Red X). When it doesn't and seems to power on normally, I start to restore it in Itunes and then it starts to skip again with the Red X on the screen.  One time I was able to run the disk utility in time and reformat the hard drive, but the red x ended up appearing again and the hard drive started skipping again.
Is there anything I can do besides get a new hard drive?
P.S. I have also tried the banging on palm/floor trick and it hasn't worked yet for me.

I found an answer by myself.
Holding the power button after switching on brings you to the open firmware.
    Now you can type:
    reset-nvram [enter]
    reset-all [enter]
After that the startup keys worked again.
