Powerbook Titanium/G4 need compatible USB PCMCIA USB 2.0 card

I have a G4/Titanium Powerbook and acquired a new iPod Nano (4th G). It requires a USB 2.0 port to synch/recharge, but my Laptop only has USB 1.1. I thought that a PCMCIA card would remedy the situation, but when I purchased one from SIIG, I was told by their Tech SUpport that the card did not support iPods. Synching on the USB 1.1 is murderously slow and I want to keep my war horse functional as long as I can. Does anyone know of a PCMCIA Card USB 2.0 adaptor that will work with iPod Nano 4th G? Thanks.

Hello Jim,
You've landed in the PowerMac G4 forums for late-model desktop machines like pictured under my name at the left. The G4 PowerBooks have separate forum areas, broken down by model. This link takes you to the forum for the Ti PowerBooks:

You may also consider asking on the appropriate iPod forum, as someone there may have worked it out for your model.

I installed a TECHGEAR USB 2.0 card, the iPod shows that is active on the bus, but does not show on the desktop, or in iTunes. Epson printer works, but SanDisk does not. I have read about deep sleep issues too. USB 1.0 is painfully slow. After using FW to update our 15 Gig iPods for sooooo looooong this is one BIG step backwards. Dupid genius at the Apple store in Arden Fair said this iPod would work with a PCI 2.0 card. I am a little ticked after purchasing videos for my wife with the promise a card would work. I know, should have done more research and not asked the genius.

Well, I now have a working USB 2.0 connection. BUT!!!! The lame OS X 10.4.3 sleep issue has raised its ugly head. How about supporting long time users Apple? Let's talk about supporting third party cards. I run a TV station and love my Mac's, but this legacy USB 2.0 stuff just stinks!
WAIT!!! My Mac is only fours years old. Is that too old? I just want to make my dual 867 sleep! Why can’t I put make my dual 867 sleep after installing a third party card? All the new Mac’s at the station work just fine. Now convince my 62-year-old mom to switch.

  • Powerbook G3 (WallStreet) OSX compatible with  PCMCIA Belkin WiFi 802.11G ?

    Hello
Do you know it the PCMCIA card Belkin WiFi 802.11G sold on the Apple Store is compatible with an old Powerbook G3 WallStreet (without USB and Firewire)?
I will install the macOsX 10.3 system on it.
    Thanks for your help

    Michel,
Belkin has had a variety of wifi PC cards with confusing model numbers and version numbers.
The Belkin F5D7010: Supposedly there are three versions(!); v1 and v2 supported Apple's AirPort software (Mac OS X 10.2.8 or newer and AirPort 3.1.1 or newer) since it used the Broadcom chipset. Then v3 was released and it was no longer supported by AirPort. BelKin then released drivers for v3 which apparently solved the problem.
The Belkin F5D7011: This card supposedly uses the Broadcom chipset and is fully supported by AirPort.

Or you could buy one of these cards where there is no question about support:

  • USB 2.0 card for my 2011 Mac Pro. Reccomendations?

I need a USB 2.0 card for my 2011 Mac Pro desktop. Can anyone reccomend a product or what I need to look for (host interface etc) when searching for a suitable card?

Amazon UK then perhaps? OWC/Macsales is a good place to see what products they have as they are Mac primarily and support Mac Pro of course.
the products they have will list and of course they need to work in 1x as well as 4x.
Lion has been out a year, and unlike ML or early adopters most should or will but again, look and make sure it says 10.7.4, some may say 10.6 or later - have to ask.
You can also dig around and find what chip a product uses and is based on and then shop for similar chip based.
Can we assume you need more USB ports, or you have dead USB on the Mac and not for disk drives in which case USB3 or eSATA are better but USB3 has been iffy on Macs - now that Apple has some and some support in 10.8 while CalDigit card needed drivers for theirs.

  • Need USB Wi-fi Card that works with G4 PowerBook on 10.4.8 & 10.5

    I have a 12" Powerbook G4, 1.5 Ghz model.
The airport in the machine seems to dislike the Cisco wireless access points on my college campus.
All of the access points show up both in the Airport icon, and in iStumbler, however, i can never connect to them.
A fix for this would be most helpful, but I'll also settle for someone that can tell me of a USB Wi-fi card (preferably 802.11G, but i'll settle for B) that will work with my system.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Asides from the end result of not being able to connect, what happens? When you try to connect, are there any system messages?
If you google 'usb wireless adapter mac' you'll find a number of useful references, should you want to go down that path.
As an aside, OS X Leopard, or 10.5, won't be released until later in the year, so users here can't tell you what works, or doesn't work, with it.

  • Have USB 3 ports but need a USB 2 port.

I have a new iMac with USB 3 ports on the back, but I need a USB 2 port to update my firmware on an Apogee Symphony.  How do I find or add a USB 2 port?

USB is backward compatible.  Not sure if you're receiving some sort of error message, but you should be able to plug it in and do the update process.

  • Connected in a non-compatible USB mode?

Well, first of all, I guess I should "howdy from a newbie"
I bought my Lumia 820 a few days back, and after having a few set-up quirks, things seem to be going quite well.
I can only see one problem left, and that's as the title suggests, and was wondering if you guys would be able to help with that one.
When I connect the phone up to the PC (running Windows XP SP3), and having Nokia Suite 3.6.36 running, it comes up telling me that the phone is 'connected in a non-compatible USB mode', preventing me from doing anything in Nokia Suite.
Any clues as to what I would need to do to correct this please?

  • Connected in a non compatible USB mode! Nokia 5310...

Aghhhhhhhhhhh.................. please can someone help me. I have been able to transfer music to my phone with no problems until yesterday. When I plugged in the USB cable to put a new album on my phone, I chose the usual printing and media option, and a sign comes up on my PC saying that my phone is connected in a non compatible USB mode and I cant transfer any music over. Thats not all, I spoke to one of the "TECH" guys at nokia and he told me to format my memory card on the phone, so i did this. Now I have NO music on my phone and it still says the same damn thing!!!!! When I plug my phone to the PC it opens it like a normal memory card! Has anyone any idea what the hells goin on? Do I need a new memory card, is my phone stuffed or has my PC just decided not to work with Nokia phones anymore?
Any help would be much apreciated.

The message about the incompatible mode is from PC Suite, and you should see it when you connect in mas storage or media transfer modes. As long as you are using Nokia Music Store application and it recognises the phone (ie: the phone name is shown next to the phone icon on the left of the screen) then you shoul be able to use the Nokia Music to transfer music in media transfer mode.
If you are not using Nokia Musioc, connect in Mass Storage mode and you can copy music between the PC and phone just as you copy between different folders in the PC. However, if your music is DRM-copyright protected you can't use this method and will need to use either Nokia Music or Windows Media Player in media transfer mode.
Because you've reformatted the card, it is completely blank, so when you start up various apps in the phone they will re-establish their correct file structures so after usage the behaviour of the phone will become more 'normal' as you know it.

  • Ex-80gb PS3 hdd - in enclosure.. need two usb ports?

Have got a 'Omata Mobile HD' enclosure.
Have installed the 80gb formatted hitachi drive that was in my PS3 into it.
PLugged it into powerbook usb port... disc utility doesnt recognise it... read instructions again from Omata, all in pigeon english - just talks about windows install etc.. .google search later reveals that it needs two usb ports - one for power, one for data - is this true? Does this go for all enclosures?
i would need to then buy a usb extendor as the usb ports are on opposite sides of the pbg4.
Are there any enclosures that can run a 80gb off one usb port? It also has DC 5V/1A on the enclosure are these quite common?

Hi, Steve. Given the inconvenience of connecting a dual-USB "Y" cable to your Powerbook, the drawbacks of USB2 compared to FireWire for use with any Powerbook (USB is non-bootable on all PPC Macs and slower than FW 400, never mind FW 800), and the very low cost of your Omata enclosure, I recommend simply replacing it with a FW enclosure. Save the Omata one for use with your next Mac, which will be Intel-powered and USB-bootable, and won't have the limited USB bus power problem that afflicts all Powerbook G4s. Most bus-powered FW enclosures are bootable and have no trouble getting enough juice from Powerbooks, unlike nearly all USB2 enclosures. Get one that has the Oxford 911+ FW bridge chipset in it; that's far and away the most reliable bridge.

  • How can I capture live video and still image by a DirectX compatible USB webcam using LabView ?

    Dear forum members
I'd like to design a user interface which shows a live video and capture still images for it by a DirectX compatible USB webcam using LabView or NI Vision Toolkit, how can I do this ? and If this is possible How can I reach the webcam DirectX filter properties and set them using LabView ? I would be grateful to anyone Who lead me to the correct solution.
        Sincerely
        Cem DEMiRKIR

    Cem,
With our example programs you can acquire and save an image (IMAQ >> File Input and Output >> Snap and Save to File.vi) from one camera, if you double the VI's to create the image and the image task, you can easily have one program acquire and save for two cameras.
I may need more information on what you mean by calibration.  Do you mean basic camera setup?  That can be done in Measurement and Automation Explorer by setting up the options within the IMAQ settings for each camera.  Or do you mean more complex calibration for special types of images?  The more description of what you mean, the better I will be able to help you get it done.  You mentioned zoom and motion parameters, what kind of motion?  Our vision drivers only control triggering the camera to acquire, then analyzing, processing and displaying the resulting image.
If you have more details on exactly what you want to do, that would be great.  Let me know if you have more questions, thanks!

  • I need a USB hub to charge my devices.

I need additional USB ports to charge my iPhone, Pebble watch and Bluetooth headphones. I use the iMac's own USB ports to connect my external backup hard drive and my printer.
    (1) The Amazon website says that USB 3.0 may interfere with wireless devices that run on 2.4mhz. I use an Apple wireless keyboard and also an Apple Magic Trackpad.
Will there be a risk of interference with the wireless keyboard and trackpad from USB 3.0? Amazon recommends using a USB 2.0 hub with 2.4mhz devices instead.
    (2) For charging devices only, does USB 3.0 afford any advantage over USB 2.0? Data transfer is not an issue.
    (3) Some USB hubs are powered directly off the iMac. Others have their own power supply that uses house power (120VAC).
Can I expect to recharge my devices off either a USB 3.0 or a USB 2.0 hub that gets its power only from the iMac?
    Thanks in advance.
    Dave

Non-powerer (USB bus-powered) hubs should not be used for charging multiple devices at the same time, because it will overload the iMac's USB bus.
If you are going to charge more than one devices at a time, then you really want a good self-powered hub or a device charging station.
In addition, not all self-powered hubs are created equal.
For example: I have had this > Belkin F5U259-ME /7-Port_USB_Hub for about 4 years and it charges all of my devices (iPods, Phone, RC helicopter, etc..) including my iPad when the display is in sleep mode.

  • How do I set up original windows 8 DVD on a Macbook air when my external drive needs both usb ports?

got a brand new macbook air and want to set up an original Windows 8 DVD via bootcamp. Probleme: my external DVD needs 2 usb port connection so I want have a chance to plug in an usb drive at the same time.
Any other choice to get along?

ok I'll try this - why didn't I have this problem with my previous Macbook air - I cannot remember how I managed setting up an original Win 7 with exact.the same equipement. Has the bootcamp Software changed? I remember burning a cd with the Windows Driver.

  • I have a MacBook Pro with Lion OS do I need a USB 500 GB Drive to successfully backup my computer?

I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro with Lion OS 10.7.1. Do I need a USB 500 GB Drive to Backup my computer?

Do you plan to backup the entire MacBook Pro, or just selected dbcuments?
If you are planning to use Time Machine to backup your Mac in its entirety and then backup the incremental changes as you move forward, you need a drive that is at least twice the capacity of your Mac.
In other words, if you have a 250 GB hard drive on the Mac, then a 500 GB drive (or larger) would make sense for backup purposes.
I have yet to meet the first person who ever felt that they made a mistake by buying too large of a hard drive. They seem to fill up more quickly than you would expect no matter what size you buy.

  • Compatible USB cord with iPod mini 1st Generation model number A1051

    Hi,
I've looked everywhere for a place that sells compatible USB cords with the 1st generation mini circa 2005 and can't find one including the Apple store---in the store some seem to say a particular one works and some doesn't, there is conflicting information. Can you help?
    Brandon

    Hello BMSprint,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
A cable such as this one will work. There are several more options available on Amazon. If it's says its compatible specifically with the iPod Mini, then it more than likely is. It might not hurt to read the comments and reviews though to make sure you are choosing a quality product.
