Powerbook to Dell 24" DVI problem

Just got a Dell 2405FPW, which works fine outputting my Titanium 15" Powerbook via the DVI to VGA adaptor. However if I plug straight into the DVI input of the Dell with Dell's cable, my Powerbook doesn't sense any external monitors.
Maybe the cable is faulty, but the Dell seems to recognize that something is connected (i.e. it goes into sleep mode rather than self-test mode). I guess I can only get the 1900 x 1200 resolution through DVI? Are there any drivers I need (nothing came with the Dell)?
Any ideas?
Any help is much appreciated...
Martin

Hi, fernando, and welcome to Apple Discusssions.
The Discussions are organized by subject area: either hardware — there's a board for each computer model or group of similar models — or software. The main Discussions page lists all the major subject headings; clicking on one of the links there will present a breakdown of the subheadings under that heading. To find the right board for an iMac G5-related posting, go to the Main page, look under Computing Hardware, and click the iMac link. Then click the iMac G5 link on the page that appears next.
On the iMac G5 page are links to a description of a repair extension program that may or may not apply to your iMac. Read that and see whether it helps to explain your situation. If it doesn't, see the link below it, "Chat with a support agent" — a special service available to iMac G5 users.
Since your post here in the Powerbook G4 area does not concern a technical problem with your iMac, but is instead a complaint about the service you got from a retailer, it isn't in keeping with the rules laid out in the Discussions Terms of Use. You can read those by clicking "Help and Terms of Use" in the right sidebar on the main page. The Discussions are user-to-user forums where Mac users help each other with technical problems. None of us here can help you with a customer-service complaint. We can sympathize, and I do. Six weeks is too long to wait for repairs on a brand new computer. But neither I nor anyone else here can do or say anything to give you satisfaction; that's between you and the retailer and/or Applecare, and I suspect that "Chat with a Support Agent" may offer you the best chance of reaching someone at Apple to whom you can communicate your unhappiness directly.
Just so you know, Apple has never been in the habit of throwing away Macs that are returned with defects under warranty: instead, it tries to repair them under warranty. This is a pretty common practice with items that are too expensive to be discarded because of some minor problem. If your new car needed a little corrective work under warranty, you wouldn't (I hope) expect it to be replaced immediately with an identical new one.

  • PowerBook G4 12" mini-DVI strange behavior

    Greetings everyone,
I'm turning to you guys in these forums as a mean of last resort. My issue being a connector, which is not functioning as it should. The problem will be described in the following part.
    The Issue:
I bought a mini-DVI, refurbished, though there were and are no problems with the piece and I'll explain why in a second.
Upon plugging the mini-DVI to VGA dongle into the PowerBook G4 12" mini-DVI port the external 22" LG Flatron display does nothing. I go into System Preferences>Display and hit the 'Detect Displays' as that seems to me to be the obvious solution in how to detect an external monitor/display in Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8. Still, no evidence of anything happening on the external display. Tough, the machine appears to lag for 2 second when the button is pressed, though the monitor remains undetected.
However, when I restart the PowerBook the display gets detected on boot when the Apple logo appears on the main display, being the laptop's. That, reassures me that the Logic Board and the mini-DVI to VGA adapter are all right. After the system is running and I'm in the GUI, everything runs as it should. Mirroring, Extended Desktop everything, you name it.
BUT, when I put the machine to sleep the external monitor goes to sleep with it, which is fine, but after I wake the machine up, the external display remains undetected and no 'Detect Displays' helps or either putting it to sleep again. If you think that I should, boot up the machine, put it to sleep connect the display and wake it up using an USB peripheral, think again, no luck there buddy.
What is curious though, is that the same thing happens with a projector at my University, but over there the trick with starting it up already connected does not work.
That leaves me with a puzzling situation and an unsolved mystery.
Please, I beg you, O, great wisdom of the Apple forums come and show me what am I supposed to do, to get rid of this terrible extended display peril. I'll be forever in your debt.
    Thank you, so very much!
    Tom.

Thanks a bunch, but that did not help. I've tried to do that before, except vacuuming the connectors. That did not help either.
The monitor I'm testing it with has only a VGA output. Unfortunately, I thought that this has been just because of the monitor's lack of DVI, but I was wrong. As I was saying, I attempted to use it with a projector over at school, it had a VGA output as well, but the projector didn't even pick up the PowerBook on restart. It just showed that it was detecting it for a couple of seconds and then it showed 'No Device Plugged In'. So, there you go. This is what I call a predicament.
I've read on a different forum that this issue may be due to a protocol transfer between the mini-DVI and VGA input of the device that I want to plug into. I am in an environment, which is predominantly dominated by machines, which need either a VGA input or output.
Isn't there a software patch for this problem somewhere?

  • How to connect a DELL screen (DVI-D) to MacAir via Thunderbolt

    Hello,
can one connect a DELL screen (DVI-D) (eg Ultraslim S2230MX) to a MacAir via the Thunderbolt outlet using a
Mini DisplayPort to-DVI-Adapter ? Does anyone have experience with such a combination?
    Many thanks, Werner

The Thunderbolt to DVI adapter does not discrimate what monitor is connected to it via DVI.
So yes, you can connect your Dell monitor to your MBA using the adapter.

  • G5 DVI to VGA Dell Monitor Connection problems, need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    hello,
I'm running two dell monitors both of which were connected via DVI to my g5 quad dual dvi. My tv broke and I'm using one of my monitors to connect the cable boxes HDMI input to the dells DVI input, it works great.
My problem is that i still want to run two monitors from my mac and still be able to switch channel sources from the Dells source button allowing me to switch from TV to Mac. Since I took up the dvi port on one of my monitors to connect to the cable box via HDMI, I have a free DVI cable. I purchased a tiny converter that allowed to change one end of the free DVI cable to VGA. I used this method to connect the cable to my g5's dvi port and the configured end to the VGA port on the monitor with no luck.
The Dell monitor does not pick up any signal and just goes to sleep as if my computer does not exist. The TV works fine and I'm able to switch sources. Please note that I'm not using the DVI-VGA adaptor that came with my g5 and don't know if this would make a difference. If it does, how do i set this up because this adaptor is like 5 inches long.
Does the adaptors DVI end need to be connected to the back of the g5 or does the VGA end need to be connected to the monitor or does it not matter. I need a longer dvi-vga cable as well, do they make them. This all depends if the problem actually is that that I'm not using the DVI-VGA cable that came with my mac to connect to the monitor in the first place.
Can anyone help me out here. I'm using the Dell 2208WFP Ultra Sharp.

    Bad adapter?
The G5 ports are DVI-I. Any good DVI-I to VGA adapter should be fine.

  • Problems with MBP late 2009 + Dell U2711 + DVI Dual-Link

    Hi!
I'm new to Apple Communities. I've been using for quite a long time my MBP with my Dell U2711 monitor. Sometimes it works perfect. But other times, just after bootup or reasume the display doesn't work properly.
Some times it doesn't detect the signal of the MBP and doesn't start.
Other times it displays the right image but with something like "noise" in every color.
The only solution I found is to turn off and on the display or if it doesn't start, forcing it touching the menu button to start up. If it appears noise and I just change the source and put it back again it works fine.
It has only happened me with this computer. I have also used it with a custom made computer with a GTX280 and never had a problem with it.
I tried to boot up with the 2 different graphics cards my MBP has, and with both I have the problem. I even had the problem using the "normal" DVI adapter. I suppose it must be something of the computer firmware. Some times, if I restart the computer using only the U2711 display. The bootup logo and loading is displayed fine. But when it displays the login window the noise starts.
I've always had this problem. It isn't something that started happening one day. I even reinstalled Mac OS X.
I'ts really strange and I found nobody who has the same problem. I hope someone has a solution.
If someone doesn't understand what I call "noise", please, tell me and I will post a photo of it.
Thanks in advance (and sorry for my English)

Double posting. Everyone, ignore this here and follow that one instead.

I don't think the DVD is damaged since it worked fine on my old G4 desktop.
The reason I'm trying to reinstall OS 10.4 is because I have received the computer from a family member with all his files and data in it. I want to get rid of it all and start from scratch for my personal use - if possible. If not, I could settle for less.
I want to explain few issues if that helps. I first tried installing Mac OS 10.3 to my Powerbook running Mac OS 10.4.3. I put OS 10.3 CD, started computer with C key held down, and all that came up was gray screen with 1 inch black line to the left of the Apple logo, and remained there - never making it to the blue screen. I shut of the computer, took the Mac OS 10.3 out of the Powerbook, restarted without the CD, and the computer was back to the desktop.
Then I tried installing 10.4, which goes past the gray screen, and gets stuck in the blue screen. I ejected the 10.4 DVD, and computer was back to normal (to the desktop)
It sounds like you inserted the wrong or a damaged DVD and neither the installation nor erasure took place. In that case, let's get started again on the right foot.
Tell me why you want to erase your hard drive? Were you experiencing some technical issue, and if so what? Let's troubleshoot that situation with the least harmful method.

Hi, Matt, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Matrox Support only told me that the new MacBook Pro with Mini Display Port is not supported, but as it's working for 2x1680x1050 with the Dual-Link DVI adapter, I was wondering if the Mini Display Port to Dual-Link DVI Adapter could be the problem.
I suspect that what Matrox Support meant when they said "not supported" was, in fact, "not supported": i.e., they've tried it and it doesn't work satisfactorily. You've tried it too, and found that to be true. Now you just need to come to terms with the fact. Matrox is quite open about it; it's not a secret. See the 9400M/9600MGT MacBook Pro entry in this compatibility table from Matrox's web site:

  • GTX 580 Twin Frozr II/OC dual monitor/second DVI problem

    Hello,
I am experiencing a problem with my new dual monitor setup.
A few days after I installed the new monitor (DELL U2312HM), the DVI with the old monitor (LG M208WA) stopped from working.
The old monitor went in power saving mode, and I couldn't wake it up.
After a few days working with only 1 monitor, without taking any further actions such as drivers re-installation etc, the pc boots and the monitor wakes up again!
Today, stopped from working again, after 1 month of normal dual monitor operation.
The monitors are connected to the following DVI Ports (starting to count from left to right, as we face the ports with the PCI-E interface being in the left):
DELL @ DVI#1 (set as primary)
       LG @ DVI#2
    So, I tried the following:
    1. Switched the monitors to the other DVI (DELL @ DVI#2, LG @ DVI#1).
Result: LG monitor works fine, DELL monitor went power saving.
(Meaning that the monitor in DVI#2 is still in power saving mode)
    2. Re-installed (in clean mode) the nVidia drivers
       Result: no change
    3. Switched the DVI cables
       Result: no change
    4. Searched the forum for similar case:
Result: I couldn't find something similar to my problem...
Is there a test/diagnostic that I can run on the DVI ports to see if there is a hardware issue with my VGA card (if this is the problem)?
Is there something else I should try?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dimitris

    Is your problem completely gone?
I have the lightning version, same thing happened to me. I will try the last thing that fixed your problem - but if it does not solve or problems start again, I guess the best option is to get a replacement RMA.
This is the second time the 2nd DVI stopped and then started again (with the method mentioned).
After the last time it started working, everything is fine.
While having the problem, I tried to plug in only 1 monitor in that DVI and boot the pc, the boot screen appeared fine, but when entering windows it went power saving.
So i guess it is not an issue of RMA.
I guess Windows or the nVidia drivers under some unknown (to me) circumstances are causing this.
Please post here if my solution worked for you too.

  • MacBook mini-dvi problem

Suddenly my mini-dvi port on my MacBook C2D 2.0 GHz White (late 2006) stopped working properly.
When I connect an LCD monitor using mini-dvi to vga adapter there is no signal but when I connect the monitor using mini-dvi to dvi adapter everything works fine. As far as I understand there is something wrong with the analog signal in my MacBook's mini-dvi port because the problem is definitely not in the mini-dvi to vga adapter as I bought a new one and the problem did not disappear.
I would appreciate any help. Is there any way to fix the problem besides replacing the logic board?

By the way, what I also found out is that when I connect display to my MB it even detects the name of the monitor, which can be seen in the display preferences. For example at work I use BenQ FP72E and when I connect it to my MB through mini-dvi to vga I can see the exact name of this monitor in display preferences but still there is no signal on the external monitor.

  • Mini display port to DVI problems

    Hello community,
I have a question regarding the connection from an iMac via the mini display port to a DVI input at a TFT monitor. I have an older TFT monitor and now I connected the iMac with this monitor via mini display port -> DVI adapter -> DVI cable -> monitor.
It is quite a simple connection, but actually when I force Mac OSX to detect external monitors it does not react at all. Mac OSX behaves as if there is no connection to an external monitor.
I already told this to my reseller and they told me that the adapter is not working correctly and they gave me another one. With that one I have exactly the same problem and now I'm quite sure, that it is not a problem of the adapter, but somehow my iMac does not find the external monitor.
Is there probably an underlying problem I do not understand yet?
By the way, my very old Macbook White has no problems detecting the monitor. If I use the older video output it works fine, but the new output at my iMac 21,5 inch does not work with my monitor.
My question is, why does it not work and what kind of monitor do I need, that it can be connected with my iMac (via DVI)?

Is the adapter plugged in all the way in the Mini DisplayPort?  It takes more force than you might expect.

  • Creative webcam dell studio 17 problems with creative zen

hi there, ive got a dell studio 17 with a built in webcam.
When i try to install the drivers for the creative zen, and put the disk in, a message comes up saying 'we could not find the driver software for your device'
then windows trys to solve the problem and comes up with a message saying 'this problem was caused by a compatibility issue between this version of windows and yor webcam which was made by creative' 'go online to download and install the update for your webcam'
however i try the website they gave me, which is the creative support page, but i cant find a built in webcam for the dell studio 17
i was just wondering whether the answer is right in front of my eyes, or if anyone else had this problem

    Hello MichelleStudio!
The only thing that comes to mind to help you out here is to try to visit Dell's support website and update your hardware drivers and/or firmware.  To get to your model's specific downloads click on "Drivers & Downloads" and choose the Service Tag option.  It asks you for your Service Tag which is on the bottom of your laptop.  Then it will bring you to a list of available downloads.
Make sure the operating system is set to Windows Vista 64-bit, as this is what your laptop came with.  The important ones to update are BIOS and Chipset.  But since I don't know specifically what is causing your problem, it's kind of a guessing game.
This is assuming you can get your laptop to boot up long enough to perform these updates.  You said that the error said something about a driver, so hopefully updating your hardware drivers and firmware help.
Hope this helps, thank you for posting!

  • Dell Inspiron 1525 Problems

    Hello.
I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Vista Home Premium preinstalled. I wanted to know if there is a way to install a fully working Arch Linux system on it. I tried with 2007.08 CD only to fail at getting the wireless card to work. Dell Inspiron 1525 comes with a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini Card. I tried installing both the latest vista and xp drivers for this card via ndiswrapper. I thought all was well since I got the message that said that the driver is installed and the device was present. However, when I checked iwconfig, the normal 'wlan0' was not in the list, just 'lo'. Can someone help me with this?
Also, I used a ZenWalk liveCD to test out if I have sound support. It seems like the sound doesn't work either, but that may be because I used an old liveCD. The 1525 comes with a 'SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-MAJOR HD Audio' or also known as "High Definition Audio 2.0".
I have also learned that although Dell does offer this laptop with Ubuntu installed, they changed the wireless card on the ubuntu version. I don't know if that means anything. Also, I have heard of many who have gotten linux installed on this laptop. I have some experience with linux, but all of that is with a desktop pc. (Used Arch for the longest after trying out Gentoo ^^)
I checked the Ubuntu forums on this matter, and they seem to have a lot of documentation on it, but I am unsure if it will apply to Arch. Does Arch come with the bcm43xx drivers? If it does, then that means I have to blacklist it or something. I really need help.
    - Dennis ^^
PS: Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for all of the replies. I downloaded the newest ISO and tried to get it working again. Well, b43 did not really work as I hoped it would, so I went and used ndiswrapper. To my astonishment, it works. Apparantly, something changed from the 2.6.22 to 2.6.24 kernels that made it so that the ndiswrapper module won't be detected with a broadcom card with the 2.6.22 kernel. This is all a guess, but it kinda makes sense. Only one problem though, I did all of the usual steps to set up the wireless connection... and it can't seem to connect to the internet... I did:
    iwconfig wlan0 essid ********
    iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed
    iwconfig wlan0 key restricted **********
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    dhcpcd wlan0
*I have tried this with other network cards, those on my desktop, and they worked fine.
When I do 'iwlist wlan0 scanning' , I detect all the networks that I expected to see, but it doesn't connect to any of them, which I think is really weird.
I don't really care much for vista, but I miss messing around with a decent CLI, and I will be majoring in Computer Science once I get into college, which would definately include classes on Bash scripting, so I wanted to get a linux install on my laptop since my desktop died. I have experience with Ubuntu, Gentoo (Stage 1 and Stage 3 installs.. Stage 1 was a giant pain and failed the first 4 times), ZenWalk, MEPIS, SuSE, Fedora, Arch, and some others. Of all of these, I liked Arch the best. So, I was really hoping I could get it installed.
Well, it seems I will be stuck with vista for a while... but I must say, it's not AS bad as I thought it would... still slow and all though ^^
    @anti-neutrino:
Hello. Dual-booting is tricky stuff in my opinion. I have never done it myself, so I can't really help you there. But, there are plenty of documentation out there on it. According to http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/mediadirect.htm, DellMediaDirect is installed on a hidden partition. So, I'm guessing that as long as you don't touch that partition, it would still be there. What I think you would have problem with is where to put grub (or lilo). The safest thing to do, I would think, is to place it in a floppy, if you have an external floppy drive, or place grub into a USB Flash drive which you would be able to boot from. I have no idea how to do this in Arch, but I have done it before in SuSE. And as for Vista, as long as you don't touch the vista partition, it should stay the same. The booting is the only problem I can see for you. If the boot loader (grub or lilo) is installed in a separate medium (floppy/USB) then to boot into the linux partition, all you would have to do is boot from the medium, eitherwise, it would boot into Vista (or whatever you have that boots up first) automatically.. that is unless they changed something, and knowing how fast linux is developed, there are a lot of changes, so I'm not really sure if it still works this way.
    @Warper:
I don't really mind the sound right now. If I can get internet to work, I know I can solve all the other problems later, as all I need to do is look up how to solve for it. But, yeah I know sound is muted by default in Arch. It's just that with my desktop, sound was automatically detected by other LiveCD's that I was confused when those same LiveCD's couldn't detect it. Again, this might just be that the LiveCD's use an older kernel.
    - Dennis ^^
PS: I reinstalled vista and wrote this post in it. T_T

  • MiniDisplayPort out to DVI problems

I bought a Mini DisplayPort to DVI cable from Monoprice, and it has some problems. I'm connecting it to a Gateway 1920x1200 monitor. If the resolution of that monitor is set to anything lower than 1280x960, everything works fine. If I go above that, weird things start to happen. Random pixels across the screen start to flicker to white, making the screen appear to be sparkling. Sometimes, depending what I have on the screen, black lines will appear on the screen. If I try to run full-screen video, the screen just turns black. I think the cable is not transmitting data fast enough. Is this a problem with the computer, or will another cable work better?

The native resolution of your 15" MBP is 1440x900. If you are connecting the external display and running in *mirror mode,* you are limited to that maximum. If you switch to *extended desktop mode* you can set the resolution for the external display up to 1920x1200 and possibly higher depending on the monitor (the setting is done in System Preferences > Displays).
It sounds like you are running in mirror mode and your external display itself is set for some higher resolution than the MBP can support in mirror mode.
In my case, I am using the Apple miniDisplayPort-DVI adapter and a monoprice DVI-HDMI cable to connect to my 40" Sony Bravia and it works perfectly.
