PowerBook update

I have some essential old software 'MicroStation Mac' that will only run of OS.9 Classic, from then on it was only available for Windows and Unix machines - it was the time they sacked Steve Jobs and the press wrote Apple off as a bad joke going down the drain - we never here from these people now, they probably spend all their time glued to their iPhones and iPads no doubt.
I still have my old G4 PowerBook  running OSX 10.3.2.  I read that there is/was available a Combo software package to bring this up to OSX 10.3.9.  Is there any where on earth where I can find a copy of this please. I find that Safari 1.1.1 is also showing it's age and will not open yahoo Mail - are there browsers out there that will run with OSX 10.3 that will open Yahoo?????
I also have a new MacMini running OSX 10.10.2, what a poor reflection the desk top is and finder windows are, since the demise of Steve Jobs, he must be turning in his grave - all the colour has literally gone out of Apple - it used to be the machine for the creative, now it is a money machine aimed at the disaffected Windows socially active crowd, such is the march of time.

The 10.3.9 combo updater is here:

• G3 Powerbook - Update OSX Tiger ?

Guten Morgen,
I am new here and have an old question - probably anwered already many times before. Thanx for your patience.
I have a Powerbook G3 - 500 Mhz - with 256 MB RAM - System 9.2
and would like to work with OSX Panther or Tiger in the future. Is such an Change advisable? How much RAM should I newly install? Are there details I should pay special attention to? #
Thank you very much for your kind advice -
Best wishes from snowy Germany
Karl

Hello, Karl,
Your Powerbook (FireWire) M7572 "Pismo" will run the latest version of OSX very nicely so don't hesitate to install it. The only question is your 9.x applications...are you going to update them to OSX-versions? If you plan on just running Classic inside your booted OSX so you can continue to use your 9.x applications, there would be no point in switching to OSX; in addition, some of the 9.x apps may not well run in Classic.
I would first install the Powerbook Firmware Update 4.1.8 if you have not done so:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75132
Your 256MB of RAM is the bare minimum for running Tiger/10.4.x but if you want decent performance, I would increase this number. The Pismo can run a total of 1GB with 2 x 512MB modules. If you currently have 2 x 128MB modules, you could replace one of the 128s with a 512 for a total of 640MB.
The only other question is available free space on the HD. You want at least 3GB for just the install; this does not include additional space for iTune and iPhoto libraries, additional applications, and free space for the swap files that OSX requires.

• Migration to 12' powerbook

I have 2 macs. 15" Intel iMac and a 12" G4 powerbook. All of my apps are mostly the same on both machines. I have idisk for storage and what not. My question is this; can I use a fire wire cable and make my powerbook kinda like my portable iMac. What I ready want to do this transfer my iphoto, itunes, docs, and imovies over there too. Once I do that is there a way that i can continue to do this on a monthly basis to keep my powerbook updated with m iMac. hope this all make sense.
Jesse

Keggboy,
Sure. With a .Mac subscription, you have a few options. One is to use the .Mac sync service to synchronize your data on each Mac using .Mac. See this page for more information. The other option is use your PowerBook in FireWire target disk mode to transfer files from your iMac to your PowerBook. Have a look at this article for more information.
I hope this helps.

• Random Loss of Power

I have just got a 15" powerbook - It did have a dud battery, I now have a nice new one that charges OK and I have calabrated it...
But every now and again when on battery power the machine just looses power, e.g. if you had no battery and pulled the charger out of the side.
Is this just a case of the battery need re-calabrating?
Cheers
Carl

Since the same thing happened with my new PB (15" hi-res, 1.67 GHz - battery would not charge), I am wondering whether you have the same problem with the new replacement battery...
1. the battery status lights remain on (4 of 5) whenever the battery is plugged into the AC adaptor.
2. after resetting PMU and running the Powerbook Update (to fix battery problems in the new PBs by resetting the battery firmware), the lights are off... but, the battery capacity fluctuates (loses capacity and then gains capacity) while on battery power only.
Has either of these been your experience?
Have you reset the PMU after receiving the new battery?
Have you run the PB Update?

• IPod 2.3

My iPod with dock connector/touchwheel has worked beautifully for the last few years, but now is not recognized by iTunes, even though the iPod icon does appear in the finder. I keep things on the Powerbook updated. The iPod is connected by Firewire; have tried all the usual suggestions for troubleshooting-- resetting, restoring, etc., with no success. The iPod shows the usual "do not disconnect" symbol. Please help!

I have the exact (?) same problem.
A 3G iPod which never had a problem, except the dreaded "Do Not Disconnect" always shows after updating.
BUT NOW, just started two days ago - iTunes says it cannot read iPod, do reset with latest software. So I did that, and then it loaded all 4,000 songs again. Then just a bit ago, I docked the iPod and the same thing occurred. I would agree your thought of previous version would be a good try, but obviously that didn't work for you.
I'll wait and see if someone replies to you.

* [/questions/777886]
Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.

Took corrective actions using Disk Utility then Applejack with no success. Deleted Library/Prefernces/SystemConfiguration files: NetworkInterfaces.plist, com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, and preferences.plist to get them to regenerate. The exception is gone but now, kdcmond could not launch is reported due to no localhost name found.

• PowerBook G4 hangs after install/reboot with Combo Mac OS X 10.5.8 update

I've got a Titanium PowerBook G4 1GHz. It had Mac OS X 10.5.4 installed.
Then I went to Software Update and it downloaded the Combo software 10.5.4 and after it rebooted, it is stuck at "Installing 2 items, Configuring installation."
You can see the progress bar pulsating but it's stuck and I dont hear any hard drive activity. I had to hard power down and got back in and did Software Update again and after it rebooted, same issue.
Whats up with that?

Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• 10.4.6 update issues with Powerbook G4

I have witnessed an error resulting from the 10.4.6 software update on two independent computers, and am stumped as to why I can't find any other references to it.
When I first installed the update (about a week or two after release), my computer's restart looked a bit odd: My wallpaper came up, along with the Spotlight icon in the upper right corner. The bar cut off after the icon, with the wallpaper behind it (as opposed to a blank bar). The screen remained frozen like this for a few minutes, before the OS finally came up looking normal. After that, the computer was not running so hot, so I ran disc utility, which seems to have helped a little, but not much.
Programs that once ran stable—text edit, safari, etc.—will freeze for no reason. When I try to force quit, the little "program running" triangle remains on the dock. If I pull up the "force quit" dialogue box rather than ctrl-clicking on the dock icon, it disappears from that boxes program list, but remains on the dock. My external harddrive, which I also repaired, isn't always recognized when plugged in, especially after the computer freezes and I have to restart.
I recently saw the similar problem arise in a Powerbook that is unrelated to mine—and more than a year newer than mine, from the last generation of G4 Powerbooks. The main difference is that after the installation of 10.4.6, this Powerbook had to go to to a repair shop and its owner had to pay $60 bucks (software problems aren't covered under Apple's lovely warranty) startup her computer, which now runs smoothly. When the computer powered on, the same wall-paper-and-spotlight-corner screen from my first restart appeared. I suspect that she might have given up and powered off too quickly after restarting, and somehow made the hang-up permanent.
The only bug description mildly close I have found to this issue is here:
http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=tiger&Number=759499&pa ge=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=31&fpart=1
The only similarity is that I use an external harddrive to hold most of my music. However, I haven't really made any major file moves, which is the main focus of this post. The PB that was repaired had been connected to my external harddrive, but several months before the 10.4.6 install (the computer was two time zones away when the error popped up.
Illegal names in the catalog file seem to be what disc utility said it was repairing on all three discs.
Any guesses as to what's wrong and/or recommendations on how to fix this myself would be appreciated. And did I do a bad job of searching, or am I just in contact with the only two computers that encountered this?
Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,
You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.6 Stand Alone Combo Updater.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /applications/utilities/disk utility.
Additionally, if you are you running any Adobe CS 2 applications, there is a bug in the Adobe "Legal" folders (Photoshop) anyway that generates an "illegal name" error. If you're running CS 2, trash the legal folders in each application, including Adobe Bridge. Then run disk repair again, until it reports no errors.

• 10.4.6 Update Caused Powerbook & eMac to stop booting up

Very strange problem. I installed 10.4.6 on two different computers at two different times. PowerBook G4 17" and emac G4. Soon thereafter the PowerBook started going into startup ****, that is the gray spinning timer would sit there for several HOURS and no bootup. So, I forced it to restart ---- bad move. The drive became unusable. TechTool reported MANY bad sectors. DiskWarrior managed to salvage the directory but cannot overwrite the existing bad directory so I am salvaging the files to an external hard disk. I tried dragging folders off the "virtual" repaired directory DiskWarrior made but almost every large file gave Errors so I ran Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the virtual repaired PowerBook directory over to the external drive. Carbon Copy Cloner is not a rocket and usually would take a few hours to copy my drive in the past for backups. Now the damage is so bad in 48 HOURS only 12GB has been copied, 60 more to go, so I have started using my PowerMac G4 with a backup of all my mail etc. and other items.
Separately, 2 days later, I installed the update on the eMac. It ran fine for a few hours. I did a normal shutdown. Next morning, it has the same gray spinner sitting on the front screen for 12 hours.... the hardware of the eMac is OK, since I was able to boot it off my previous PowerBook G3 500 in Target Disk mode... DiskWarrior rebuilt the directory on the eMac but still it is not going past the spinning wheel gray apple...
Two machines separate from each other both having startup failures after an update.... makes me wonder... could be bad luck, or coincidence... but just wanted to post here in case someone else has had problems and thought it was just their issue....
Let me know if you have some ideas on what may be the problem. Thanks/
Imran

Hi Imaram, updates rarely cause problems. Rather, the problems are pre-existing and the update exacerbates them.
It sounds like you are completely backed up. I'd suggest zeroing out the disk with the bad sectors and re-installing and see if they return. If they do, you'll need to replace the disk. I'd do a zero out on the other disk also even though it is not reporting bad sectors yet.
Then, you can clone everyting back. I'd suggest trying SuperDuper this time.
