Powerbook waking up randomly

Every once in a while my Powerbook will suddenly awaken from sleep (with the lid closed). After a few seconds it goes back to sleep again. Sometimes it will do this over and over every few minutes.
The computer has done this both when plugged in and not (and it's pretty annoying to have 1/2 the charge vanish overnight!).
Wake when modem detects ring and wake for ethernet administrator access are both unchecked (and in any case, it is not connected to Ethernet or a phone line), nor is the PB set to wake up at a specific time.
Any ideas?

Powerbook G4

My Powerbook does it all the time but just stays on.
Nearly all the time the display stays off too so the
only way to get it going is to hard reset it which
Mine does that too sometimes, but I think that's a separate problem. It seems to happen on occasion (rarely, thankfully) that when I try to sleep my computer, the display turns off but the computer isn't asleep. (It's mostly asleep though; it can't be accessed remotely, for example. Or maybe it's crashed.) As you say, the only solution is a hard reset. Anyway, maybe for some reason your computer is more prone to this behavior, so when it wakes up and then tries to sleep again, it crashes.

  • IMac with waking up randomly from sleep mode

    Hello everybody!
Since I installed Snow Leopard (all updates done) my iMac is randomly waking up from sleep mode without any reason that I know of. Some days everything is fine, next day it wakes up when I am at work and retrieves mails (thats how I see it is awake).
Also I set it up to shut down after 1h idle time- this does not work as well.
Any ideas how to track the problem?

  • PowerBook G4 freezing randomly

My PowerBook G4 (1.67) has worked flawlessly for 2 years, but just a few days ago it began freezing randomly. It freezes completely, without warning or slowdown. I have to shut it off manually each time. Sometimes it freezes after running only a few minutes, other times it freezes after several hours of normal workload.
It doesn't seem to be related to anything I'm doing at the time, as each time it has been different circumstances. The last time it was idle with only iTunes running.
I am running OS 10.4.9, but the problem began before I installed the OS X update, so I know that is not the cause.
Is there anything I can do to further troubleshoot the problem before sending it in? Any clues as to what might be causing this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, BPMayer.
Apart from what has already been suggested by joeuu, it is possible that your problem may be either hard drive or logic board related. Certainly something to test for and, hopefully, rule out.
Therefore the first thing I would recommend is that you make sure any important data is fully backed up immediately. If you don't have an external backup drive (preferably a FireWire drive), then this is a very good time to get one.
Next try restarting from the original installer disc and then using Disk Utility to check the state of the hard drive. At the same time see what the SMART status (located at the bottom of the DU window) says. If it says anything other than "Verified" then the hard drive is the source of the problems.
Another thing to try is the Apple Hardware Test. This may reveal any problems with the internal hardware.
Unfortunately hard drive failures can, and do, happen fairly often with any computer that uses one as a storage device. Therefore it is a problem that can afflict any brand of computer, not just restricted to Apple, and (unfortunately) seems to be much more prevalent nowadays.
Fortunately, providing you have your important data backed up, it is not too traumatic and replacing them is not overly expensive (when compared to other major component failures).
Logic board failures can occur but, thankfully, appears to be rarer than drive failures. Whilst they can be expensive to replace, your data should not be at risk (unlike with a drive failure).

  • MBP having sleep issues: won't sleep by itself & waking up randomly

Lately my Macbook Pro's been having a few sleep issues. I set my energy saver settings so that the display should sleep after 10 minutes and the computer should sleep after 20, however what I often come back to after being away from my computer for a while, is a turned on display with a log in screen. What it looks like is the screen will dim, and then turn back on again. It looks like my MBP refuses to sleep on its own, unless I close the lid or do it from the menu.
I've also had issues with it waking up in the middle of the night. When I went to the terminal and took a look at the wake reason, there appears to be two culpruits: "EC.SleepTimer (SleepTimer)" and "EHC1". I understand the latter might be a USB device or bluetooth, but I've seen it do this when no devices are connected and with my Bluetooth turned off. I've also disabled "Wake for network access" and there's no wake times schedules. I'm pretty frustrated at this point and would really appreciate it if someone could suggest a solution.
    Thanks in advance.

You've checked most of the reasons why it wakes. Also go to users>login items and delete any items there.  Here's alittle mre info, hope it helps.

  • Powerbook Locks/Freezes Randomly

Still fighting this issue. New RAM, 4 OS installs, Disk Utility drive verify/repair, reset PMU, Apple Hardware Test run in loop mode for 24 hours, you name it.
The machine will hum along fine for days, then freezes. I can hear the drive running and the fans running. No display corruption.
I know it's probably the logic board but I'm looking at everything before having that replaced. This is the message I found after the last freeze event. Note that there is no panic.log file produced when these events occur.

Maybe that's what the system writes when I press the power button down - I don't really know.
Any thoughts on what I can or should try or do would be appreciated.

Ok. The machine JUST froze again. I did download and run a third part memory program but will do so again. Last time around I booted from my backup external firewire and the machine still freezes.

  • Repost --powerbook G4 15 inch still shuts down and restarts randomly.

This is a repost. I am still having problems with my 15 inch powerbook restarting itself randomly. It happens all the time and I lose everything that open/running at the time. It goes back to the login screen and when i log back in, everything is shutdown/lost. HERE is the last log after the crash/shutdown.
    Any solutions?? power supply??
    Thank you.

    Cornelius:
Thanks for the info. Today I was not connected to the internet, i had my sys preferences set to never sleep, never screen saver and about half way through ripping a DVD with handbrake, my powerpc G4, was back at the login screen!! I logged back in and everything was gone/shut down. I had a half ripped movie and all programs were shut down? Today I also ran apple hardware tests from the disk, techtool pro 4 and everything passed so i dont know why this keeps shutting down?? Is there anymore tests i can run from the OSX tiger disk? Heres what the console and sys log looked like after the restart:

  • Hello Apple Community. I need help with a freezing powerbook G4

    Hello!
I'm new to Apple laptops. I purchased a Powerbook G4 867 MHz 640 MB used and I'm starting to have some problems with it. My powerbook freezes at random intervals and I cannot even move the mouse. I have to hold down the power button to restart it. It runs fine before every freeze and it seems like after it freezes the fan runs very fast.. it sounds like a fan at least. This Powerbook came with no CD's at all, I have been trying to download various software to fix it but that's when I run into my next issue. I receive a "mounting failed" error upon every download. When I double click on the file it says "cannot open because this file is still be downloaded."
I really like this computer and would love to get it working right. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I don't know the most about mac os x so if you could be please be detailed as I cannot always locate programs on here.
    Thank you guys!

Well... that is an older system, as long as you don't want to watch internet video's, it may work for you. First thing I would do is to reset the PMU and the PRAM. Next thing I would want to do is to run the Apple hardware test. See if the Powerbook image located here will work. If not, if you can put your hands on a copy of TechTool Deluxe (might even be on your system) that can do similar hardware testing.
It would be good if you could put your hands on at least a retail version of OS X 10.4 Tiger, as certain operations, like repairing the hard drive, require that you boot from another source. Or, if you have an external backup drive that you can use for your system, you can initialize it for Mac OS extended (journaled) format, use a program like SuperDuper to make a bootable copy of your hard drive, then boot from it. Note it can only connect via Firewire if you want to be able to boot from it.
In the meantime, you can bring up Disk Utility, in applications/utilities on your hard drive, and do a verify disk. If this notes issues, you'll either need the retail OS X mentioned above or a bootable backup to repair (or you can buy Disk Warrior which can also likely repair a hard drive problem, as long as it's not a hardware issue). Usually people try Disk Utlity repair first before investing in Disk Warrior.
One source for OS X 10.4 Tiger retail disks would be hardcoremac.com. Don't get an upgrade disk, either, as they may require you to be on the prior operating system.

  • ROSS Random Overtemp Sleep Syndrome 2STH/1/3/: Track Pad repair?

My PowerBook has ROSS (Random Overtemp Sleep Syndrome)
The Apple Hardware Test gives an error: 2STH/1/3/: Track Pad
Is it possible to get this repaired out of warranty?
    Mark

You might want to look at http://www.ifixit.com or http:pbparts.com for the trackpad, which is integrated into the palm rest or top aluminum casing of the PB. Then if you're handy, you or someone can install it.
Or you can take it to Apple or an AASP to have it repaired for a fee.

  • PB boots randomly while shut down

Since installing the latest security update last week, my Powerbook keeps booting randomly while being shut down - day and night. There is no automatic start up or wake scheduled in the system prefs, and no application has been installed since that might lead to automatic boot ups. Any idea on how to fix that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi mcp,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
That Sec Update is known to have issues. Read this for potential fixes.
Also, you have an Aluminum PB, while this is the Titanium folder. You'd likely get better help for your machine by posting in the Aluminum folder. Good luck.

  • Screen randomly wakes

    Hi Guys,
Recently (possibly since the latest software rollout) my Z1 keeps waking from sleep.  The screen will light up and then turn off again after the screen timeout.  It happens on a regular basis (once every 15 minutes or so approximately)
I have uninstalled recently installed apps, tried disabling location settings, tried changing power settings, wifi settings, stamina settings and all to no avail .. it keeps on waking up randomly.
This is MOST ANNOYING at night when the light from the screen wakes me up too .... anyone got any ideas?  I would appreciate some help here.  If anyone from Sony reads these then please feel free to email me and I can provide more details if needed.
    Thanks in advance,
    John

I know that the screen wakes when you charge the phone and it reaches 100%.
But if its not during charging you may want to try running the phone in safe mode just to check if this could be cased by any app.

  • Powerbook G4 "Freezes" I have included error log

*Hello all*, I have a 1.5Ghz 1.5 ram 15" Powerbook G4 that randomly freezes. I know many are knowledgeable here. I receive the dimmed screen with a error notice to use the power button to turn off computer, no options given. I purchased this machine on Ebay with included Tiger disks. I have performed two clean installs to no avail. I have included the most recent error log below. Three possible related issues are the 1. ical doesn't show current date in Dock (July 17) which from discussion boards doesn't seem related. ps I have done all the suggestions to no avail. 2. Widget icon in Dock shows "on" with small black triangle, but is not selected, which doesn't seem right, however finder stays on or activated too maybe a Tiger thing.... 3. The 1 Gig of ram is 3200 at 400mhz but this seems a non issue as it will clock at the prescribed 333mhz. and shows OK.
To resolve I have re-installed, repair disk option and manually ran the daily, weekly and monthly processes with Terminal. I hope I have given you all the facts needed. Thanks For Your Efforts. PS would Leopard be the only answer at 150.00 ish and or new Crucial 2 Gig of proper pc2700 ram?

Tiger 10.4.11 is a very stable operating system, well suited to a 1.5Ghz 1.5GB Powerbook. Your system has the horsepower to run Leopard fine, although it's possible you may want to max out the memory at 2GB at some point, depending on the work you do on the system. I wouldn't move to 10.5 because I thought it would be more stable, rather, a move to 10.5 might be called for since some new/upgrade software products are starting to require 10.5 as the minimum operating system (that's why I upgraded).
For Leopard, here are some sources. The ebay listing is currently $52 with 17 hours to-go. Be careful you don't buy a gray systems disk for another mac system, like an iMac or MacBook, as those won't load on a Powerbook since they are locked to the system type they were shipped with. Stick with the black retail disks, which includes the upgrade DVD that shipped as an extra DVD with the early Leopard systems. It requires you have Tiger installed, and does the complete install from there.

I did look up where I bought my 10.5 upgrade from, and they want $189.

The Mac is waking up randomly and always showing this errorcode. The keyboard is showing a flashing green LED while the mac awakes.
What is this? Anybody familiar with this error?

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple's KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
Allan Jones says "sometimes there is Network activity: launch System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Options" tab and uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."
    Good Luck!  DALE

  • Hard Drive is dead - deciding what to do next

    Hi all,
My computer is a 12 inch Powerbook G4. My hard drive is dead.
Here's what happened. Night before last my powerbook was freezing randomly. In retrospect the HDD was making some clicking noises but not consistently. Following morning it freezes one last time. On reboot, it won't finish starting up.
I run Tech Tool and all the HDD scans fail. I use Disk Utility on the Tiger OS CD and it also comes back saying that the HDD has failed. All the repair attempts by these tools fail. I read some articles here in the forum that led me to pay the $5 and download Data Rescue II boot cd file to try and see if I can recover anything. I'm burn the disk image to a cd, but am unable to boot off the disc.
I make an appointment at the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store to basically confirm what I think has happened. They hookup their firewire drive and see that basically there is nothing viewable on the HDD and that it is dead. Since I'm out of warranty, Apple's repair option is to pay around $300 to send it to their repair facility. I'm thinking I may do the replacement myself.
So, my understanding is that the drive that's in there is a 60GB 4200-rpm Ultra ATA/100 hard drive. My question is can I upgrade to faster, larger capacity drive? How do I know what drive will work?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

If you want size, definitely get the 250GB drive. It is the largest-to-date drive. I remember just "weeks" ago when I recommended this option to some folks, people thought I was fibbing since the previous option for largest drive was 160GB.
They also thought I might have been confusing it with the SATA drive for MacBook and MacBook Pro computers.
If you're looking at speed, then it's the 100GB drive at 7200RPMs. I'm sure eventually, they will come out with a higher capacity for the 7200RPMs, much like the 250GB story.
I debated over that myself, when I decided to tackle upgrading the drive on my other PowerBook, the 15-inch one. Those are easier. I don't think I will ever pop open the 12-inch PowerBook to do any work on it.
250GB gets space. I wanted it, but at the time, didn't have the money. I got a great deal on a Seagate 160GB 5400.3 RPM drive (the ".3" stand for the version drive you get). It was less than retail because of a price match, plus a store credit coupon I had.
So I went for it. Plus, this drive had Seagate's "perpendicular recording" technology that makes it just as fast--so reviews said--as the 100GB 7200RPM drives.
And 5400RPM vs. 7200RPM drives are really nominal in speed difference. It's not noticeable, according to my research. Where it is noticeable is video editing, and intense tasks. Then there's the factor of higher capacity drives with slower speeds, beating out lower capacity drives with higher speeds.
But I don't want to go in to that. I'll be talking all day!

  • Sleeping Macbook Pro with External Monitors: Bluetooh prevents and annoys.

    I have a 2007 Macbook Pro.
Recently I decided to go all wireless and now have a bluetooth mouse and a bluetooth keyboard, as well as external monitors. Here's the problem.
    1. I like to keep my macbook pro closed and use the external monitors alone.
    2. That means that I need to have the "Allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer" option selected.
    3. My mouse (microsoft bluetooth laser mouse) will prevent the macbook pro from staying asleep. I don't know why... seems to happen even if there is no movement, maybe the mouse is searching for the macbook to see if it is still connected, but whatever.
    4. I would like the bluetooth KEYBOARD to wake up the macbook pro, but NOT the mouse.
    5. The bluetooth control panel does not allow me to customize -which- bluetooth devices can wake the laptop, it's an all-or-nothing scenario.
This drives me crazy. I can either disable bluetooth waking, in which case I am forced to open the laptop in order to wake it up, but then I have the darn laptop OPEN with the laptop screen being used when I only want to use my external monitors, OR I can have bluetooth waking enables, in which case the macbook rarely sleeps for long.
Any ideas? I do not want to switch to a USB mouse or keyboard, nor buy a different mouse or keyboard. The keyboard is an apple wireless bluetooth keyboard, the mouse is a high quality bluetooth Microsoft keyboard.
I can't think of any reason why I shouldn't be able to just wake the laptop from the keyboard alone.... or for a way to stop the laptop from waking up randomly when bluetooth waking is enabled.
    Any ideas?

    Anyone?

  • PowerBook randomly shut off, no longer boots - URGENT

I have a PowerBook G4 15" 1.33GHz that up until now ran flawlessly. Today I was watching a movie on it with some friends when it randomly shutdown. Since then, it no longer turns on. The battery is fully charged and there is no problem with my AC adapter. With just the battery, nothing happens when I press the power button. When the AC adapter is plugged in and I press the power button, the optical drive spins at full speed for a few minutes and then the PowerBook shuts itself down again. I have attempted reseting pram and pmu with no success. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I have similar problems with my PB which I got it used from a friend of mine about 3 years ago and ran flawlessly until last week. Everything worked until one day i came back home and tried to wake the computer from the screen saver and there was no response even after having pressed every single key and key combination possible. I have done a bit of research and people had similar problems. I then booted it up with the recovery disk and it says that the SMART status failed from the disk utility. I went down to purchase an HD and I've installed it. Perfect, everything was running.... after having tried booting it 50 times with PMU and PRAM methods. I've installed Leopard soon after, even updated to 10.5.1 and when i put it to sleep, it won't wake up properly after i wake it up. However, I can hear the fan, but not the HD nor the optical drive.
So anyone has the same problem? My PB will only start up 10% of the time only from being completely off. It also won't wake up from sleep properly, it turns on, but the screen is black and HD won't turn, same with the optical drive.
I'm sorry that this is a long message, but this is my workhorse and I just lost all of my school work and I'm freaking out. A little help, please?
