Powerbook will NOT eject disks

I know there are many threads on this subject: but it seems this Powerbook has a very strange problem as it will NOT eject disks.
IT IS NOT A SOFTWARE MALFUNCTION
I have opened up the unit and gently pushed a thin knife inside the front section of the superdrive itself, and it seems there is some kind of catch that has come down and stuck at the front. About 20mm wide, making it impossible for the DVD in the drive to be ejected.
Is there some weakness in a component part that causes this?
Any help greatly appreciated.

However, I have heard that if you turn your Mac off and leave it off overnight, the stuck arm may retract on its own. I think the arm is there to prevent you from inserting another disc if there is already one in the drive, but apparently it can get stuck.
Here's hoping something here will help.
Good luck!

  • PowerBook will not boot, Disk Utility does not see drive, HW Diag Pass

My PowerBook Ti will no longer boot. I am getting a flashing what looks like OS 9 face, and folder in the middle of the screen, and they alternate.
I have Tiger Disks so I tried booting from them and running the disk utility. The drive is not recognized.
I decided to run the PowerBook's hardware diagnostic disk. Both sets of test passed. I was expecting to see the mass storage one to fail, but it did not.
I am kind of stuck, does anybody have any kind of suggestion?
    Thanks in advance,

PS Hitting apple S is not recognized during the boot.

Could this be a bad logic board????
Yes. Or a bad hard drive cable, or a poorly seated connection on either end of that cable.
The HD cable is fairly delicate and needs to be handled with care when connecting and disconnecting, as when you're replacing the HD. It's possible that your first HD failed, and then you damaged the cable when removing it or installing the new drive, so that even though the second drive is new and presumably in good working order, it can't be used because the cable is now bad. I would suggest investing a small amount in a new HD cable before replacing the LB or returning the new HD. Any of these parts vendors should be able to supply one:

  • CD/DVD drive will not eject disk, it is obstructed, help!

    Hi,
I formatted my G4 slot loading ibook today, I then went to eject the installation DVD, the drive makes the sounds as if it is ejecting however no disk appears, I took the whole laptop to pieces and looked at the drive, there appears to be a strip of metal that is on a hinge, this can be moved up and down, I think that it might be this that is causing the problem - the disk ejects so far, hits the bar and returns back into the computer. The disk is read by the computer and I am able to eject it so far as the ejection symbol appears and it sounds like it is trying to eject however it is unable to do so. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!!!

Ok I have fixed this myself, after searching for solutions all night and trying many different weird and wacky solutions I found one that worked therefore I thought I would share it to help with anyone else with a similar problem, basically I opened up the firmware window (start up holding - command, option, f, o,) then type "eject cd", the next bit is the most difficult bit whilst the computer is trying to eject rummage about on the left hand side of the cd drive with a credit card like object, (I used a small bit of thick cardboard. I slowed and stop the CD with the card whilst pushing it about after about 2 minutes of this it popped out, after this I used a blank CD to try it again, it got stuck, I repeated this process and it popped out again, after a couple more incidents of it getting stuck I have managed to get 54 ejections in a row without issue. I recommend this solution to anyone as a last resort.

  • My granddaughter put the Start Up Disk in the drive inadvertently and now the drive will not eject it or start up using the HD.  I have tried all of the suggestions for opening it that appear in the manual.  Help?

My granddaughter put the Start Up Disk in the drive inadvertently and now the drive will not eject it or start up using the HD.  I have tried all of the suggestions for opening it that appear in the manual.  Help?  It is her computer, a iMac G3 or G4 with superdrive, the one with the ball shaped base.   Thank you.

It's a tray loading drive, there should be a little hole next to it, just large enough for a paper clip.  Stick the end of the paper clip in it and the tray should open.

  • DVD disk will not eject

How can I eject a disk when it will not eject thru regular means?

    Welcome to discussions, frank.
OK, here we go, in preferred order of things to try:
    1. With the machine powered down, power up holding the trackpad button.
    2. With the machine powered down, boot into open firmware by holding the cmd-opt-O-F key combination until you get the white OF terminal screen, then enter the following commands:
eject cd <enter> // (wait a couple of seconds to see if it works)
    reset-all <enter>
    3. With the machine powered off, use a credit card as a pry tool and insert a corner into the opening slightly, at a point about one inch from the right edge of the opening and press down gently with the card to see if you can get the release lever to spring the disc.  Be very ginger about doing this.  The lever often looks like what you see in this picture of an out-of-machine optical.
If those don't work, then you are stuck with removing the drive from the machine and working from there.
    Good luck!

I suggest taking it back to Best Buy. Once it has been opened, Apple will not handle the phone. Best Buy or another 3rd party are your only choices. Best Buy probably made an error when replacing the screen. Understand they are not an authorized Apple Service Center.

I had this same problem with my PowerBook. Disk Utility would eject the disk, but nothing else. As I plodded through the normal steps (DiskWarrior, TechTool, etc) I found that disks ejected normally when I booted from my external drive that had Panther on it. This was good news because it eliminated the hardware possibility. So the hunt shifted to find what was different between the two setups. I finally remembered a utility called OnyX that lets you change lots of things like menus, etc. Very handy, and one of the things it has is a checkbox that says "Show Eject Item in File Menu". I figured I would never use that when I could just push a button, so I unchecked it. Surprise! It turns out that unchecking that box did away with Cmd-E, disabled the eject button and also the dragging to trash option. I re-checked it and all is well. So, boot from another drive or a CD or something before you buy a new drive and look for software problems. Good luck!

Hello, my name is Tyesha Woods I onw a Macbook and my dvd hard drive will not ejected my cd ,I have tryed everthing I could would you please help me?

    Hi Tyesha,

Restart the MacBook - as it is restarting, hold the trackpad button down. This will force it to eject. The disk should eject before you get to the login screen or desktop.

  • ITunes 10 will not eject a CD

After I have import sa CD into iTunes, the CD will not eject from iTunes.  If I use the eject keyboard key, or move the CD to trash, I receive a message THE DISK WASN'T EJECTED BECAUSE ONE OR MORE PROGRAMS MAY BE USING IT.
So I FORCE EJECT and that does it (only after a message stating I may damage the contents of the CD).
    Any ideas?
The iMac is brand new and using Lion.
    Many thanks

For some reason (Firewall / Internet security programs?) the Apple iTunes installation program doesn't install all the necessary components.
There is a way to manually unpack the installation program to it's 6 different components and install each component one by one.
(Advantage: you don't need to uninstall or deactivate your security programs)
    Best thing to do is:
    1) Download the iTunes installation program (directly from the Apple website
    http://www.apple.com )to your desktop,
    WITHOUT INSTALLING the iTunes application.
    2) Download he WinRAR decompression/unpack utility (for example from:
    http://download.cnet.com/WinRAR-32-bit/3000-2250_4-10007677.html?tag=recommended Downloads )
and install it on your desktop for easy use.
    3) Unpack the iTunes installation program, using WinRAR by rightclicking the
iTunes installation program and choose 'Open with WinRAR'.
Don't bother with the message from WinRAR about files beïng corrupt
(these are probably the unreadable 'Apple Mac' files).
    4) You'l see that the original iTunes installation program consists of 6
    different installation programs.
4 utility programs (necessary for iTunes to work correctly)
    - Apple Application Support (Version: 1.3.2)
    - Apple Software Update (Version: 2.1.2.120)
    - Apple Mobile Device Support (Version: 3.2.0.47)
    - Bonjour (Version: 2.0.3.0)
    and 2 main programs
    - Quicktime
    - iTunes
Copy these 6 programs to your desktop with WinRAR,
    where they will appear unpacked.
    5) Install each program one by one IN CORRECT ORDER:
    - First the 4 utility programs, one by one.
    - Following this, install QuickTime.
    - Install iTunes as last.
    6) Check the Windows installed programs list to see if they're all installed.
You can check the versions of te programs by clicking the information toolbar
    for each program.
    Good Luck..!

  • My macbook will not eject a disc

How can i get my macbook to eject a disc.  The eject button makes noises but the dusc will not eject?

    Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.
