PowerBook will not start up

Okay, so my Powerbook recently had a heart attack on me.
I was working on my PBook, when I was prompted to update to the latest verion of Java. I accepted the update and everything went well. Later that evening I went to put in a cd into the optical drive and it wouldnt accept it. As in, it didnt register that a disk was being put in. I restarted my PBook to find that the start up would make the start up noise, and then went to the grey screen with the apple in the centre. At this point, the system completely stops, gets stuck, does not make any "thinking" noises, and will not go past that screen.
I looked for help in the support section, and I have attempted starting up in safe mode, to no avail (it just stays at the grey screen). I reset the PRAM, and nothing occurred. I then attempted to reset the PMU, and still, nothing (it will start up without or with the power adapter). Following that, I tried putting the startup disk in, but the cd drive still isnt working. Finally, I tried to start up in single-user mode, but it just tells me that...
'Extension "com.apple.driver.KeyLargoATA" has no active kernal dependency.
Firewire (OHCI) Apply ID 31 built-in now active, GUID 000d93ff fe47d2b2; max speed s800'
and then gets stuck, without letting me use the prompt to run a hard disk check. However, the Firewire bit, doesnt always appear.
Any help?

Okay, I tried to boot into safe mode again, but this time held the shift key for longer. After the computer ran through all of the 'thinking' noises, it immediately shut itself off. The power adapter was plugged in at the time, so it isn't just that the batter was low.
Any other suggestions?

Are you talking about a MacBook? That is what this forum is for. If you really have a PowerBook you'll want to post your question here.
If on the other hand you have a MacBook, can you give us some more details? Like does anything happen when you press the power button? If so, describe what goes on on the screen. If not, have you tried resetting the System Management Controller?
    Best of luck.

  • PowerBook Will Not Start (Flashing Planet Attack)

    Hello,
So my PowerBook is having trouble. I became frustrated with it and it's been sitting for a month or so, but here is my problem: I start up and get a light blue/grey screen with an icon of the world flashing in the center of the screen. This icon then changes to a question mark. After this is finished, I then get a black screen with a prompt that says:
+"etc/master.passwd: No such file or director+
    -sh-2.05b#"
This just happened upon start-up one day. There were no symptoms (apparent to me) leading up to this. It just went kaput and I can't seem to find any documentation as to what exactly is going on here. I have contemplated trying to reinstall OS X, but I have a lot of important work on the hard drive. Any help or advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Jonathan:
You do not give us any specs on your PB G4. Please include the processor speed in your profile, as it is helpful to us as we attempt to diagnose your issue and suggest possible solutions.
The flashing question mark indicates that your computer cannot find a bootable volume. From your description of how this came about, it is most likely a failed internal HDD. I suggest that you boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer and run all tests in a loop by holding down Ctrl + L during the tests. Let is run for a while as it sometimes takes hours for intermittent issues to appear.
As I suggested earlier, your HDD has probably failed. The solution is to replace it with a new HDD.

  • My powerbook will not start! please help! could be due to thermal paste?

I was recently reinstalling the keyboard within my 17' Al Powerbook. Afterwards, the computer booted fine and worked for maybe less than an hour, and then, on a reboot, shut down abruptly before OS X was finished loading. I restarted and was able to log in for several minutes. Now, upon opening the system, I noticed while replacing the RAM door I missed the slot it should fit into and it was put into place below this (which apparently is right over the CPU)...and when I pulled this part out there was some thermal paste along the edge. Looking into this area with a flashlight, the thermal paste seems sort of messy and some is in front of the chip rather than directly on it.
How likely is it that lack/messiness of paste is what is causing this? The battery fully charges within the system and the AC light is on. When I attempt to boot the machine, you can hear the HD, fans, and Superdrive spin for a second but you never see anything on screen.
Another thing that maybe the problem - when reinstalling the keyboard i forgot to replace the adhesive seperating the keyboard mount area and screws from the logic board - the first time the system shut down, I brushed my hand across the newly installed keyboard and the system shut right down. I'm not sure if this caused the overheating CPU to shut down, or if this caused the keyboard to contact with the logic board and I shorted it out and need a new one. I've since replaced this adhesive insulation plastic and the system still won't boot.
Any help would be appreciated. Please leave suggestions. I don't want to lose my mac

Your best option is to post in the iMac G4 forums here:

You're now in a the forum for older notebook computers. If it's a hardware issue, you'll be posting where people with the same hardware hang out. Also, it is always better to start a new topic rather than resurrect one that's been inactive for weeks. Lots of people skip over topics they thought were inactive. You get the attention you and your Mac deserve when you start a fresh topic. Folks are friendly here so there's to need to be bashful!

  • My Powerbook will not power up, but I can hear the fan running...

Please help!! My Powerbook will not power up, but I can hear the fan running when I press the power button to attempt to power it up. I just received a new power adapter because it wasn't working properly and it was doing this before and then it worked for a week and now it will not power up at all. It just starts the fan but nothing else turns on. When I plug the adapter, with the battery still connected, it will look as if it is charging but then the light on the plug turns from green to orange then off and doesn't power up at all. If I take the battery out and plug in the adapter, the light stays on but it does not power up except for the fan noise. Does anyone have any suggestions? I also followed the two articles listed online in regards to resetting the power setting and the command + alt + P + R as well. Nothing works. Thanks in advance.....

Same here. If I start up with the power adapter attached, it starts up fine. If I try to start up from battery only, the fan comes on, the sleep light comes on but nothing else happens. I tried letting it sit that way for about 15 minutes and nothing changed. I tried attaching the power cord while in this mode and nothing changed. I tried the PMU reset a couple of times but nothing helps.
This computer is just over 1 year old and I have not had any problems with the power cord (3rd party), the battery, or any problem like this before. It started after a proper shutdown last night and attempt to start without the power cord this afternoon.
Any answers to this yet? I think I'll call on this and report any success to this discussion.

  • Powerbook will not run unless plugged in

my powerbook g4 12" will only run off of the power adaptor. the battery seems okay. it reads as charged. and coconut battery shows a full charge (albeit with reduced capacity after 100+ cycles.) however it will not start up from the battery. and if it is running, and i unplug it at the unit, the computer dies instantly.
upon plugging it back in, it will start up fine. but my date and time settings are erased. and it runs fine on the power adaptor. but suddenly, this power issue happened, and it's like the battery is not even there.
so i bought a new aftermarket battery. everything seemed to go as normal. while doing the initial charge, the plug light on power adaptor glowed yellow. when i woke up the next morning, it was green. and after startup, the battery read as fully charged.
and then when i unplugged the power adaptor, bang! dead!
so, no change with a new battery.
the power does seem to make it to the battery, since the new battery did charge. but the unit will not operate off of a battery. even for 1 second.
i've done the pmu resets, and cussed some. neither helped.
    help!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
The reason the date resets to ancient times is due to all power being removed from the system. The 12" Powerbook doesn't have a battery to retain those settings like the 15" and 17" Powerbooks.
There are only 4 components in the electrical circuit: Power adapter, DC-in card, battery, and logic board. From the sounds of it, your power adapter is working, the DC-in card seems also to be working since power gets to the system to run it and the battery seems to charge, the battery, especially with a new one, we'd assume is good, and that, unfortunately, leaves the logic board. There isn't a test to see what might not be working in the power circuit, so you have to eliminate things to hone in on the issue.
You can't repair a logic board, so if you need your system to run on the battery, you'll need to replace the logic board. You can take it to an Apple store, and if the case isn't bent up, they can send it to the Apple Depot, which for me was in Houston, where they'll replace just about anything needed to make it almost new, for around $350. We had a Powerbook sent off for a new logic board, and they also replaced the battery (hint, if you take it to Apple to be sent to the Apple Depot, include your oldest, even if dead, battery). If the case is banged up, they charge more since they'll replace the case. If you want the Apple store to replace the logic board in the store, that runs about double sending it to the Apple Depot. Or if you're good inside a computer, you can buy a used board and change it yourself. Took about a week to get it back from the Apple Depot, and it comes with a 90 day warranty.

  • Wallstreet will not start

Looking at these forums, it seems to be the time for Wallstreet power problems...
Anyway, I wonder if anyone can offer any advice...I've already tried much of what is suggested here.
I have a 233MHz 15" Wallstreet. This morning, the lid hinges finally gave out, so I decided to have a look at the problem - flipped the keyboard, decided against it, put it back. Now, the machine will not start.
As soon as power is connected (battery or power adapter), the fan comes on. And stays on. The computer will not start. I have tried resetting the PMU with battery in, out, power adapter connected, not connected, all combinations of the above. But as soon as any power is connected, on comes the fan. I have tried disconnecting the keyboard and re-seating the PMU ribbon cable. No luck.
Any other suggestions of things I could try? I am leaving power disconnected overnight, but if that does not work it would be nice to have some other ideas!
If not, I'll be trying to but a case for the HD so that I can mount it on one of my more recent machines to get the data off it...
    Many thanks,
    Mark.

    opensource,
Hearing the startup chime (bong) is a good sign; this means the powerbook has had a successful initialization of the hardware necessary to boot up.
The Wallstreet can also have a long period of inactivity after the startup chime when performing a cold start. If you have 256MB of installed RAM, for example, you may wait as long as 30-40 seconds from the startup chime to first light of the display. This is normal; the Wallstreet is performing a memory test during this period. Give her a full minute until you decide there is going to be no start.
When you connect the power adapter and get the sleep light and a brief runup of the fan, this normally indicates you have a corrupted power manager. This usually happens when there is no working or charged main battery and the powerbook is unplugged from the power adapter for a period of time. The internal, rechargeable backup battery (PRAM battery) will run down and the power manager is usually corrupted.
Here is information on the PRAM battery:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30580
Please try this series of tests:
    1. Connect the power adapter, then reset the power manager with the powerbook turned off. On the Wallstreet, you simultaneously press the 'shift-fn-ctrl-power' keys. If successfully done, you will see a brief flash of the sleep light.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
    2. Note if it has a normal startup.
    3. Sleep the powerbook, then wake it. Is this normal?
    4. Perform a restart and report your results.
If you leave the powerbook connected to the power adapter (and the power adapter is not turned off if connected to a power strip or switched outlet), does it always start normally?
Please also take a look in the System Profiler and see if it reports the 512K of backside L2 cache. You may have the 233MHz/0K CPU but I doubt it...it would be as slow as molasses.
There are other possible causes for your problems but let's see what turns up.

  • PB will not start/run on battery

    Hey everyone,
I posted this on the power & batteries forum, but judging by the dates on the replies to other threads it seems like a VERY slow forum. So here goes...
    Just got a Powerbook G4 17", 1.67 ghz 2gigs ram but I have a problem.
It will not start-up from the battery. The battery takes a charge & all the lights turn green when I press the test button. When I try to start I can hear the fans run, LOUDLY, but that's it.
However, if I use the power cord it works perfectly, with one exception. The date is reset to 1969.
I ran the hardware test, using the OS discs and everything passed.
I reset the PMU, but that didn't help. Does this mean that there is an internal battery that needs to be replaced? The manual implies that the internal battery is rechargeable, so I'm a bit confused.
Any help or info is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Yeah, weekends tend to be slow. Good time for beer drinking, right!?
Your symptoms sound similar to my 1G 17" PowerBook I was given earlier this year. Once charged, the battery will last about 30-45 minutes, drop to zero, then recharge to 100 percent WAY too fast. I had a guy at an Apple Store look at it and he said that its failing at a specific power level each time while showing "good" health" is indicative of a bad cell in the battery. Mine was five years old so he advice was to get a new one.
There is indeed an internal backup battery that is rechargeable. It's located under the optical drive and one of the USB ports is attached to it. Mine was dead when I got the computer but managed to take a charge after I left the computer plugged into the wall for several days with power off. Rechargeable batteries do have a finite life, and the backup in the PB does not have enough power to start the computer even when new.
Pull the battery and let the internal backup charge from wall power for several days and don't use the computer. Then put the main battery back and see if you can get the normal sleep behavior that gives you time to reconnect AC power when the battery dies.
Also make sure your charger is the 65W version. Mine came with a 45W version from a smaller PB and will not start without the main battery installed, even in its current sorry state.

  • PB will not start up.

My PB (15 inch, Tiger, couple months old, battery not in recall) will not power up. The screen remains black. I have done all of the things in the User's Guide. Option key, Ctrl & Command, removing power and battery and pushing the power key. Nothing works. Ideas? A CD is also in the slot, so I can not start up from the Install disc. Cannot eject the CD.
    Thanks,
    Holbrook

I've also got a PB 15" that will not start up. It's 1.25 GHz, a couple years old.
I've gone through the entire troubleshooting steps recommended at the following link (Apple Knowledgebase article #50959) for PowerBooks that will not start up but nothing works. Have reset the PRAM and the PMU, even swapped RAM cards to make sure it wasn't a bad RAM issue. Nothing
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n50959
In my case, when I hit the Power Button the HD spins up and the optical drive spins up (has a CD in there) but the screen never comes on and most of the time it never does the startup chime. Once in a while, it does.
I know the power is on because of the HD & optical noise and the caps lock light on the keyboard functions. It will stay that way with power to the keyboard and drives with nothing coming on the screen indefinitely. Ultimately, I have to force it to shut down by holding the power button down for 10 seconds. Then the keyboard goes off and the HD spins down.
I know the HD is good because I've removed it, put it in external case and accssed it from another computer.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? It's out of warranty now and I'd hate to pay for logic board out of pocket.

  • HELP! my computer will not start!

Help Please...my powerbook g4 12" will not start up. when i power up, a white screen with a gray apple in the center is all that i see. i was reading some posts on this website, and found some information to bypass, and help move into safe mode, but when i get to the point where i am holding the shift key and the small gear looking thing is turning, it gets to a certain point and the computer shuts itself off. the computer was purchased in 2003, and has worked fine. the only thing i can think of that might have triggered a problem is that i just had to purchase a brand new power supply from apple, other than that there have been no changes in use. any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.
    thanks

    Karin:
i cleaned off my hard drive and started over...
I am not sure what you mean by "cleaned off", but if you mean an erase and install, you lose everything on the HDD. I recommend a reinstall only after we have exhausted other possibilities because it is the ultimate invasive procedure. It is also important to have a backup before attempting any major procedure.
i dont have the upgrades i made previously
If you mean the OS upgrades, try this:
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo update (PPC)
    Computer will restart after installation.
    Repair Disk Permissions as previously.
Go to Apple Menu > Software Update
    Install all updates.
    Repair Disk Permissions as previously.
is there any way to prevent this in the future?
    1. Make sure you always have a current backup. The best way to do this is to clone your entire HDD to an external firewire HDD using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner
    2. Develop a regular maintenance schedule. Here are a couple of articles that will help:

Well, I'm currently updating my Quad as I write this on my laptop. So, in a few minutes I'll kniow whether or not my upgrade will be like all of the positive comments in another thread or like this single one.
I suppose you will need to startup the problem child with your original DVD and see if you can repair the offending start drive.
    Keep us posted.
I'm off to my computer room to check the Quads status. Later.
