PowerBook won't boot and has crazy pixel patterns

Hi. I have a PowerBook G4 12" OSX 10.4 that seems to have gone seriously wrong. I can't get it to boot past the initial white screen, it just thinks about it for a few seconds then freezes. Booting from the system disc doesn't help either. The screen is also displaying a crazy pixel pattern over the normal graphics which seems to randomise every time the screen is updated. The issue came about when the device had a serious crash while playing music located on an external hard drive.
Is there anything I can try to fix this or is it a hardware issue that is beyond repair?
Thanks
Ian

HI Ian,
When you boot from the install disc are you holding down the C key?
Also, try Apple Hardware Test
You may be able to boot in Safe Mode
What is Safe Mode
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
Make sure there's enough free space on your PBook.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

  • Powerbook Won't boot - And disk permissions won't repair

    My powerbook G4 won't boot normally or in safe mode but will load up using the leopard disk to instilation page. Once there the folowing issues become aparrent;
    1. Not enough space to archive and install
    2. Disk persmssions can't be verified or repared (the disk can be both verified and repaired and appears normal)Have waited overnight for this to complete and it hasn't.
    3. Whilst it connects to networks it doesn't appear on them to allow data to be removed to make space
    4. Attemting to use disk utility restore function to copy the hard disk onto a external hard drive fails (bar about 1/8 of the way across predictions stat at 1hr58 and reach 6 hours when the powerbook starts making a lot of noise nad the external hard drive activity appears to halt)
Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Might be worth a shot trying to transfer in TDM, once booted from the install disk:

  • MacBook osx 10.6 won't boot and has DVD stuck in drive

I have an older MacBook running osx 10.6 and it recently became unable to boot up.  It gets stuck on a gray screen with a dark gray apple logo, a spinning icon and a progress bar which goes all the way up and disappears.
I have tried the following from this page: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
-safe boot verbose, it gets partway through and then black screens
-resetting NVRAM / PRAM, it seems to just be trying to boot and persists in the problem.
It has a DVD in the drive and I cannot eject it any way I try, there is no pinhole to force eject and the eject arrow or left mouse key don't do a thing, and as I can't boot into safe mode or any other way I don't know how to eject it, and because the DVD is in there I can't reinstall the OS.
Any ideas?  I do have an external USB dvd reader I could try attaching to it to install the OS anew but not sure that would work...
    thanks
    Tamar

OS X- Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup
    If you need to reinstall:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • IMac won't boot and has flashing folder with question mark on gray screen

I just bought a new iMac. I have been trying all week (with no success) to transfer files and apps from my previous iMac. The last time I tried to transfer, I used target mode on the old computer. It looked as if it was finally working, so I left with 2+ hours remaining on the transfer. When I returned, the computer was frozen and nothing would work. So I held the power button to turn it off. When I tried to turn it back on, there was only a gray screen with a flashing folder with a question mark. I feel like I have tried everything listed in other discussions. The only thing I am not able to try is to reinstall Lion because the new computer did NOT come with an OSX disc of any type. Any suggestions?

  • PowerBook Won't Boot Past the Apple and Spinning Flower Screen...

I've been reading a lot of these forums, but still haven't figured out how to fix it on my laptop. So, I made my own topic.
Anyways. My dad gave me this laptop since he got a new one, so it's a hand-me-down which means I don't have this startup disk that I keep seeing talked about. I've tried Safe Boot, but when I do it with Command + V, it says all sorts of things that I just don't understand, and there is a lot of talk about the Apple Power Management? Such as:
    com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement isn't a valid mach-o (magic is cefaedfe)
    error mapping module file com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement
can't map com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement in preparation for loading
    couldn't alloc class "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement"
Etc, etc. And then the last lines that it ends with say:
    BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2
[HCIController][configurePM] power parent ready after 1 tries
And it just stays there and doesn't boot up.
I honestly don't know what any of this means, or if it is even relevant to why my PowerBook won't boot past the Apple screen. If you have any information on how I could fix it, that'd be great. Also, if you have any questions that would help you figure it out, ask away and I will answer them.
    Thanks a lot.

    MixtapeChick:
Welcome to Apple Discussions. Congratulations on your "new" PowerBook. I suggest that you begin with this combination procedure:
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
    • Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
    • Release the keys and immediately hold down Shift key to start up in Safe Mode.
    • Log in and empty Trash.
    • Restart normally and log in.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?

  • Won't boot and fans go mental

since updating to 10.5.5 my 17" iMac has began to fail. not sure if this is a coincidence or something to do with the recent updates.
after about 10mins it started to freeze up with the spinning beach ball of death
then it would freeze after 2mins
now it won't boot and the fans go mental and it shuts itself off.
i held down some keys to get the text up of the booting process and first it went on about "intelPSU missing" or something and finally would say "I/O error" "14 majors" and stuff
could it be the hard drive?
    could it be the ram?
could it be the power supply?
    stupid mac
i can get it into target disc mode but my macbook pro doesn't see it.

It's probably a combination of a failing power supply unit and logic board. I suggest you take it in to be looked at.
Try booting from your install disc and running Disk Utility to check things out.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Reboot from your hard drive and repair permissions.

  • Pro Won't boot and need major help!

All of a sudden my MP won't boot. It turns on but won't boot and can't figure out why.
I had just shut it down and let it cool off for about 10 minutes because I had to move it upstairs to my internet connection to register some software....and then it wouldn't boot up. I've tried and re-tried and no go. Opened it up and re-sat the drives and RAM thinking something got loose. There's 4 drives in there including a backup clone. I guess what I need to do is figure out how to boot from the clone. Will pulling the drives and just inserting the clone do that?

It appears that one of the four drive slots in your Mac Pro already has a clone of the OS. If so, then all you need to do is to hold down the option key after you press the power button until you get a choice of which HD to boot from. You should see both your original boot drive and your clone HD. Select the clone HD, and hopefully you will boot up and be back in business. If you wish to continue to boot from the clone drive, then you will need to set that up in System Preferences as your boot drive. I would suggest that as soon as you get your Mac Pro to boot from the clone drive that you run Disk Warrior on that HD or at least try and repair it from within Apple's Disk Utility program. If your Mac Pro still will not boot from that HD, then it may be beyond repair and have a hardware failure.

  • Shockwave "won't respond" and "has crashed" in  Google Chrome, IE, Firefox, can't use it anywhere

Shockwave "won't respond" and "has crashed" in  Google Chrome, IE, Firefox, can't use it anywhere. I already tried completely removing every file it has, reinstalling it, and I went through the process of reinstalling Adobe Flash a couple of times. I'm using a PC. This has been going on for 3 days, it hasn't worked even once. It all seemed to have started right after I updated Google chrome, but Shockwave won't work on any browser, so I'm not sure if that's the case. Please help!

You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.

my iphoto won't open and has a ? on the photo picture in the dock

Look in your applications folder - is the iPhoto application there (it probably is not) - if it is double click on it to launch it
    If it is
    reinstall from the original source
    Could be
1 - the restore disks that came with the computer
    or
2 - the iLife DVD that you purchased
    or
3 - the app store - log in under the Apple id used to purchase the software or to set up the computer - look under purchases - you might have to unhide or accept the Application first

A neighbor had the same problem and asked for my assistance.  I created a rescue disk using my HP desktop running Windows 7 64-bit.  Even though her HP laptop was running Windows 7 32-bit, the disk allowed me to boot into windows on her computer.  I then went to the HP web site and downloaded the latest BIOS and then flashed it to the BIOS chip following the instructions that came with the download.  Everything is working fine now.  Hope this helps.
