PowerBook won't shutdown correctly, Everything just freezes!

In the midst of updating quicktime and i-tunes the other day, somehow most of my computers functions became unresponsive. When I tried to force quit applications still nothing happened. I tried to shutdown my computer but it just got to a blank screen with just my desktop picture and it never turned off. The next morning finally I ended up forcing the shutdown by holding the power button. I restarted and things were off. The time along with most other things in the top right corner are no longer displayed. This I can't correct. Whenever I try to use an application it will work for maybe 15 seconds and then become unresponsive. Still nothing will force quit. Basically at this point I can't use my powerbook for anything, Safari, I-tunes, Ableton, quicktime, everything just freezes up. Please Help

Whenever i try to update my macbook pro, it downloads then says I need to restart my computer. I restart the computer, and everything just freezes. When my computer eventually turns back on, its not updated. other apps i try to download dont download also

    First, do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
When you complete the above re-download your OS X upgrade (not sure which one that is, but I assume Mavericks.) After the download is completed re-install it. Hopefully, this time it will do what you expect.

  • IPod Photo won't shutdown (almost everything tried)

Since a few days ago my iPod Photo 30GB won't shut off.
It just turns off (using the Menu+Select or the Sleep menu function) when it's plugged to a power source (wall or computer).
But when I unplug it, the battery drains even when it seems to be sleeping.
When I have the iPod fully charged it can play music for about 5 hours.
I'm not sure if the problem is the battery or something more serious...
This is what I've tried without success:
    - Restart the iPod using the Menu+Select buttons. The iPod restarts, but still i can not shut down the iPod.
    - Restore the iPod to factory settings.
    - Update to the latest firmware version.
    - Downgrade to first firmware version.
    - Format the iPod's harddrive and run some disk utilities to see if the disk is ok. It is ok.
    - Let's the battery drain and the fully charge it again.
    - Using the diagnostics secret menu, the power tests seem to work ok (sleep forever and sleep), and the harddrive test too.
Thanks in advance for any help!
PD: The iPod is 2 years old, so it's out of warranty...
    iPod Photo 30GB

Have you been using the iPod on a doc connector? I have been using my iPod photo (20GB) on a doc connector for the last few weeks and yesterday I noticed that she is not going to sleep mode at all. The back light timer goes to dim, but the iPod won't get back to sleep!
My guess is, having it connected for so long(playing or not playing music), I have somehow disturbed its sleeping pattern (or the embedded software that triggers the sleeping mode). However, I note that you have reset and re-installed the the firmware. In the last couple of months, have you had any luck?
Thanks in advance if you have any advice to share.
    Cheers

  • I have a new unlocked iphone3gs. I cannot get the video to work. When I try to record video I am not offered any options. It films until I tap the red button, but then everything just freezes. I

I have a new (from Apple) unlocked iPhone3gs. I cannot get the video recorder to work. When I take video I am not offered any options at the start or the end of filming. The screen freezes when I hit the red stop button. But that's it. I have to hit the home button to get out of that. And none of the v-recordings can be found on my phone anywhere.
Also I'm having trouble with Bluetooth. My Mac says it's paired with the phone, but the phone says not; even though It accepts the pairing code from the Mac. I'm getting very frustrated with these problems. I came on here to find the user manuel, but can only find the fingertip manuel and the product license manuel. Both of which I have in hard copy.
And the most annoying thing is the sound on the calls. I can hardly hear the caller.
    Anyone got any helpful advice?
    Thanks, Elizabeth

    Robert or Elizabeth...
Sync media using iTunes, not Bluetooth.
When the screen freezes on the iPhone, try "resetting".
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
And this link is for the iPhone 3GS user guide >  http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPhone_iOS3.1_User_Guide.pdf

Serously doubt this is a "new" iPhone 3GS. More likely refurbished.

  • Powerbook won't shutdown after installation of OS 10.4.11

What is the fix for this? So far, I have:
    Repaired permissions
Booted in single user mode and run fsck
Rebuilt the directory with Disk Warrior
    Disabled Dashboard
    Reset the PRAM
Installed and run Applejack in AUTO mode
Plenty of disk space - that isn't the problem. Interestingly, Applejack couldn't restart the computer either. The error was "Failed to load DeleteTrap.kext".
The only way to shutdown the computer is to hold down the power button until it turns off. This is really bugging me! Any help is appreciated.

Hi allisonm, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Have you done a PRAM reset...

Tried resetting the PMU for PB/iB?

I'd also find that file, see if it's locked or what, maybe move it to the desktop for a test too.

    > same problem happen when i enter the bios,
If this happens within the BIOS, then this problem is related to the hardware malfunction.

d Pacifist to reinstall both the Safari
    application and the WebKit framework
was that before the 10.4.6 combo was applied?
Nope, I tried the Pacifist route after applying the combo update.
It does sound as if webkit is busted at the moment.
What version of osx is on your install disks?
Not sure, I'll have to check them.
I'd like to avoid a archive & install, but I'm beginning to think it's my only remaining option.

Okay, we'll try the technique from the following post. Be sure to be logged in to your usual user account when doing so. (Otherwise you'll be editing the wrong set of HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys.)
Re: How do I turn off the compatibility mode for ITunes.
Does that clear up the compatibility message?

How did you "move everything" over?
Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the bad iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

  • Powerbook won't boot, freezes or goes to "open firmware"

My roommate's powerbook died the other day. It freezes on the apple logo. Tried to get into single user mode or boot to an external firewire drive via holding option, both times it went into something called "open firmware", never seen that before. Also, when it is powered on, it gives a long low toned beep and the white light on the front flashes a bunch very rapidly, maybe 5-10 times.
    What the heck happened?

    Hi Sean,
Ensure the memory modules are correctly seated in their holders. Remove them and re-install them if necessary. Restart and see if the problem is still present. If the symptoms still persist then remove one of the modules, restart and if necessary repeat by replacing the removed module and removing the other one.
More details on "beeps" and "flashing" can be found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58442
Are you able to start up your roomate's powerbook in Firewire Target Disk Mode (FTDM)? If you can then you will be able to backup the data to your Mac.

  • Ugly, ugly, Chromium did not shutdown correctly hack.

Chromium constantly gives errors when I launch it.  Either says it didn't shutdown correctly or that there was a problem with my user profile.  The following bash script checks to see if it is running and if it isn't it clears Chromium's cache and deletes the locks on the profile.  It checks to see if Chromium is running first as doing these actions while it is so is probably not the best idea.
Starting Chromium in this manner is working completely fine for myself going on a week now.
    #/bin/bash
    APP='chromium'
    if ps ax | grep -v grep | grep $APP > /dev/null
    then
    # Chromium is already running
notify-send -t 3000 "Chromium" "Chromium is already running. A new instance will not be started."
    else
    # Release the Chromium locks before starting
    # 1) The next four commented-out lines would be used to fix your user profile in most cases
    # (Default profile given but applies to other named profiles too)
    #cd ~/.config/chromium
    #cp -r Default/ Default.bak/
    #rm -r Default
    #mv Default.bak/ Default/
    # 2) But, just deleting the locks works just as well
    rm ~/.config/chromium/SingletonCookie
    rm ~/.config/chromium/SingletonLock
    rm ~/.config/chromium/SingletonSocket
    # Clear Chromium's cache before starting
    rm -r ~/.cache/chromium/*
    # Start Chromium skipping any initial set-up and also with a maximized window
    chromium --no-first-run --start-maximized
    fi
If Chromium actually does crash then it would probably not be a good idea to start it using this script.  This script is on my panel and what I usually use to launch Chromium.  In my application menu the default launcher is present and when Chromium does crash - hasn't yet - then I'll use that default launcher on the next run.
So, flame on!  Tell me how bad an idea this is!?

Expanding on what ralvez stated, here is our policy
It is highly unlikely that your issue is unrelated to these two year old problems.   Almost everything has changed in that time.   Please feel free to start a new thread, and if you feel this thread is appropriate, then go ahead and link back to this thread.
