Powerbook won't sleep, just shuts down

I asked about this some time ago and nobody ever had any ideas. I was just curious if someone new had ideas.
My 12inch powerbook g4 won't sleep, if I tell it to sleep, or close the lid it just shuts down. I have changed the settings so that sleeping isn't an option and the screen saver comes on and then the screen goes to power save. The computer can stay like this for days/weeks but if the lid closes it shuts off. Any ideas? All the checks I have run haven't found any issues. I replaced the logic board about a year ago and the problem remained. So, it was either not associated with the logic board or both boards have the same issue. Not sure what else would cause this sort of issue.
I am now running 10.5.4.

sorry - should have added that I already reset PRAM, PMU, repaired permissions, ran cron scripts

My MacBook Pro won't go to sleep or shut down.
    Sleep
The behaviour is the same whether I press the power button and choose 'Sleep' or whether I choose 'Sleep' from the Apple menu. The computer stays awake, but it loses the ability to respond to Keyboard Shortcuts, such as those used for Expose, and can get stuck in some Apps. If I close the lid the computer stays awake but the screen blacks out. Re-openning the lid does not re-illuminate the screen so I have to force shut down and re-boot.
    *Shut Down*
The behaviour is erratic. Sometimes the computer simply ignores me (although it does close the 'Are you sure you want to Shut Down now?' window), and sometimes it goes to the blue screen with the progress circle and hangs.
    *What I've tried already*
    - Resetting the SMC
    - Checked the Firmware versions are the latest

  • Satellite S855-S5266 won't sleep or shut down

So this is getting frustrating. Recently picked up a Satellite S855-S5266, running w7 x64, and it's been great except for one thing: it won't stop running. Ever. I've checked my power options, and when I close the lid or press the power button it's supposed to enter sleep mode. It does this...for a second or two, then wakes back up. I've checked and unplugged all preipheral devices including the power cable and ethernet cable, I've checked and disabled the network adapter, tried using hibernate, nothing I've done has worked. On top of that, when I tell the computer to shut down, it just restarts.Every time. Same thing from safe mode. I've checked and toggled the PowerdownAfterShutdown registry key, no effect. The only way this computer will not be running is if I hold down the power button until it shuts down, and that's not exactly ideal. Any help here would be worthy of a medal. And a puppy. No, seriously,I have a brand new golden retriever puppy  and she's all yours if you can fix this for me. Cute little thing she is. Thanks!

Best to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. See the section Recovering the Internal Storage Drive, which begins on p. 53 of the User's Guide.
       Satellite/Satellite Pro L800/S800 Series User’s Guide
It's fastest to restore directly from the image on the HDD. But create the media anyway in case something goes wrong.

  • 15" powerbook won't restart or shut down

    Hi All,
My PB 15" has a curious problem of not restarting or shutting down via the apple menu. I can restart and shutdown using sudo shutdown -r now through the terminal. If I try through the apple menu nothing happens - not even the desktop is unmounted. Similarly when I run a software update that requires shutdown/restart it does not do it when I press the button. It will ONLY shutdown and restart from the command line. I originally encountered this problem with Panther and was hoping an upgrade to Tiger might fix it, it has not. I am *pretty sure* that reinstalling the OS will fix it, but this is a pain in the neck!
    any ideas appreciated!
    Thanks.

  • Macbook won't Sleep or Shut Down

I just got my Macbook on Friday and it's great apart from the fact it won't shutdown or go to sleep.
When I try to shut it down, either by the power button or the menu, it just restarts.
When I close the lid or select Sleep from the menu the display turns off, the sleep light pulses once and then it kicks back into life. It's also accompanied by a drive access noise. Is this a common problem or am I going to have to send my Macbook back?
I've tried doing a software update which hasn't solved the problem and there are no USB devices attached.

Do a search for Sleep. You will find such as this

I suspect there is some simple fix, but getting Apple Support/Genius to do it would be best.

  • Mac Pro won't sleep or shut down

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro (2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) running latest software. It won't go to sleep. It looks like it does but it doesn't. I get a grey screen saying it had to restart because of a problem. I have to turn it off manually on the button and the secure emty trash doesn't seem to empty because the icon bin has "paper" in it. Also, I get asked if I want to remove all items. I say yes and it still looks full. I just reinstalled EVRYTHING a couple of weeks ago (from my old 10.5 discs). What to do now?

    Hi-
The problems that you describe indicate a user account problem, which are typically caused by preference settings, or, items in login or startup items files.

The easiest way to test/resolve this is to create a new user account for yourself.

  • Nano won't sleep or shut down

Unlike some I've read here, I have a different issue. When I press the Play/Pause button, my nano stays awake. When I originally received the nano, in order to preserve battery life, I read that I have to press and hold the play/pause button for a few seconds. This did work within the first 30 days of usage but no longer works. I've sent it for repairs 2 times and I receive my unit back with the usual install handouts.
If you've suffered similar weirdnesses, please help. I'm sure its something as simple as a setting and I love my nano but this is really a bad thing since it's not juiced up when I need it to be.
    Thanks

I tried what you suggested and still no luck.
I think that I'm going to have to return it because Apple has a product that doesn't shut off. I'm going to pay them a visit and see what they think and will post once I have my face-to-face with them.
    Thanks for your suggestion.

  • Won't go to sleep or shut down

My iMac won't go to sleep or shut down when I tell it to. If I push the button on the back to make it go to sleep it doesn't do anything and if I select sleep from the apple menu it doesn't go to sleep. If I click shut down in the Apple menu it goes to a blue sreen and then the little loading symbol comes up and it just loads. I left it for an hour and it was still loading so I just held down the back button and turned it off that way. What can I do to resolve this?

    First, try eliminating some variables-
Disconnect any devices attached via firewire or USB, and try again.
Some USB devices have been known to prevent the iMac from going to sleep or shutting down.

Thank you BGreg.  That is what I have been doing, and then it works just fine.  I think it was doing the same thing in the previous version of Lion.  I may be incorrect about that.  I upgraded to 10.7.3 a few weeks ago, and then last week I reloaded the combo update, hoping it would help.  Not so.  Thank you for letting me know it is a common problem.  I have tried permissions in Disk Utilities, and in Macaroni, both at least 4 times, plus numerous restarts.  Nothing Improves.  It still can not find the internet when it wakes up or gets up.

  • Won't Boot Up - Just Shuts Down

Hi all, I need some help.
I'm trying to build a new computer. I'm running the following:
    MSI865 Neo2
    Intel P4 3.0ghz
    2x512mb Kingston DDR400 Ram
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
    Antec Tru430w PS
    Maxtor 80gb SATA HD
Whenever i turn on the machine 5-15 seconds later it just turns off. Sometimes I get as far as seeing a message saying "BIOS Not Installed" then something about the Floppy Drive then it shuts off. If I try it again without waiting 5 minutes or so, the monitor doesn't even have time to turn on before it again, just shuts off.
I've checked all connections, tried reseating ram/video card/etc, and with only the video card and ram connected. I've also tried clearing the CMOS using the jumper the way the manual said to.
Please help, and thanks in advance for your replies.
P.S. On SATA HD's....do you need to plug in power to both sata & the standard 4pin? Also is there a special combination to use since with the 9800 pro needs a connection from the power supply to the card to the Hard Drive?

    Quote
It always just shuts down after it tells me "BIOS Not Installed"
This implies you have the FIS2R board. This is the message from the Promise controller indicating it is not going to install it's bios since it didn't find a drive. Once you can get into the bios you can disable the Promise controller and get rid of the message.

No. This must be one of the SATA drives that has both connectors to ease transition.
Two beeps is either a memory error or a post failure. Try booting with only one stick of memory installed. If that doesn't work try the other stick. If that doesn't work try one stick in a different slot.
