PowerBook Won't Startup

Help!
This is long so bare with me. I had the original OSX on my PowerBook when it was purchased in 2001. I have since updated the system software due to the quantity of programs I use and the demand for new ones. The system software I am now running is 10.4.2. I've noticed my computer running really slow in the past 4-6 months, but I installed 10.4.2 approx. 9 months ago.
Strange thing happened the ther night. I went to print, and the print window just kept running, and it said I had too many applications open to print. I had Mac mail and Safari open. ? So, I tried to quit out of them, and also throw extra applications off my hard drive that I didn't need anymore to free up space, and my computer just froze. I forced restart and have not been able to reboot it correctly since.
I get the Apple image and the little spinning wheel when I restar it, but then it just keep's spinning and eventually goes away to just a blank blue screen. It will stay this way for hours. I've tried restarting holding down "c" and rebooting from it's original system cd. That's not working. It's trying to find my hard drive to reinstall the software, and it's as if my hard drive (and extra external hard drive) do not exsist.
All I want to do is get myself back up and running. I got bills to pay online! Are you feelin' me? Any help here is greatly appreciated!!
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Hello! When trying to boot from the install cd holding the "c" key down usually requires holding it down for a good 2-5 minutes depending on several factors. As for the external drive if it has a bootable syatem on it you should reboot holding the option key down when will bring up a list of bootable partitions so you can select the ext. drive. Holding the "x" key down forces an OSX boot if a valid OSX system can be found. You might also run fsck.
when you re-start, hold down the apple key AND the "S" key
You'll start up into a command line interface.. it'll look strange but just hang in there.
When it's done booting up, you should see something that looks like this:
localhost:/ root#
at this point, type in 'fsck -f" please note the space before the dash, and of course, ignore the quote marks, then hit return
You computer will no go thru some low level checks on your HD. Most likely you'll get a list of a few files that have problems and this procedure will fix them.
This should take about 2 or 3 mins, so don't be in a rush.
When the line says "VOLUME WAS MODIFIED", this means that changes were made.
At this point you should be back at the same
localhost:/ root# prompt.
run fsck -f again.
Wait for it to finish.
if you continue to get the "Volume was modified" message,
continue to run fsck -f until you'll get a prompt that says
The Volume(your HD) appears to be ok,
again with the localhost:/ root# prompt.
AT this point, type reboot, hit enter and your computer will start up normally.
This is not difficult, but you may want to give it a shot when your feel you have a few moments where you can attempt something new and not stress too much.
Good Luck, Tom

  • What Can I do? Powerbook won't startup/Reinstall interupted/corrupted

    Hi
1)imovie crashed and froze everything (finder too) on saving.
2)Now can't log in to my main admin account. Freezes after selecting it in the startup screen. It takes a LONG time to get to the users login screen.
3)Repaired Perms./Verified Disk using startup disk. No errors. Still No go.
4)I have a second account (also admin!)- It's ok.
I wouldn't be averse to deleteing an account but I need to get all my emails etc. from there.
    Uh Oh
Well I made a fatal error!!!
I tried reinstalling OSX and archiving the users/settings...The installer couldn't finish.
    Now the Mac won't startup
and won't work in Target disk mode!TDM just freezes both computers.
Hard drive test shows no errors. Can't check permissions though. This always stops with an error saying try again.
My only hope will be to go and buy disk warrior tomorrow and see if I can save something from the drive B4 a complete reinstall.
    Any Suggestions? Please?

First have you tried booting the computer from another hard drive (eg a firewire drive using the option button at startup) to see if it's a hardware problem or software problem (or a physical problem with teh internal hard drive)
based on you saying that it takes a long time to get to the login screen and target mode does not work i'd speculate that the hard drive might be on it's way out. This is what most users tend to say when there hard drive is failing. The next thing you usualy get is a horrible whiring sound. hardware test such as those in techtool don't allways show hard drive falure, my internal one recently died and techtool reports everything is within normal paramaters (even S.M.A.R.T !)
if you manage to gain access to your hard drive by whatever means then i'd suggest backing up everything you need and wiping it. then try a fresh install.
it may also help to reset the non volotile ram. to do this you need to hold commandoption+of to enter open firmware mode, then type "reset-nvram" followed by return and then "reset-all" followed by return. it will ask you for a password if you added one using the firmware utility.

  • PB won't startup, Disk Utility won't recognize my HD (help).

So my Powerbook won't startup, goes to grey scren with sign saying I need to restart. I have a 1.2m PB 12" with 1gig ram. It's been slowing down for a week or so, and I can't trace the problem to some new installation or device. I've tried reseting PRAM, removing my extra RAM card, and used disk utility to verify & repair permissions & disk. No luck yet.
First of all, Disk Utility only recognizes the "55.9 gb Toshiba HD", and doesn't really recognize the "Macintosh HD" which is listed in grey, which seems strange (ie, bad). After Verify & Repair Disk, it lists these problems: "Invalid sibiling link, missing thread record - id=115279, invalid directory item count (should be 0 instead of 1), could NOT repair 1 volume."
So then I tried to reinstall Panther, but the installer doesn't list (doesn't recognize) any HD's into which it may install. This also seems strange (ie, very bad).
I have been unable to startup holding X, Shift, spacebar, or by reseting PRAM. I've recently backed-up my stuff, so I'm ready to wipe it all clean. But I'm running out of options, and I am in desperate need of good advice from wise Applers. Thanks in advance... -K

I had the same problem with my G3 Pismo last month; the hard drive wouldn't mount and wasn't recognized by disc utility. Luckily I had a "backup" OS on an external drive along with Disc Warrior, which would boot the Pismo.
What I was able to do was run DiscWarrior on the Pismo drive - which took about two days to complete - and build a replacement directory. Once that was done, and before I asked DiscWarrior to write the new directory, I mounted the replacement so I could pull most of the user data off of it. When that was done, I went ahead and asked DiscWarrior to try to write the replacement directory - which it refused to do as the drive's hardware had failed.

  • PowerBook Won't Boot Past the Apple and Spinning Flower Screen...

I've been reading a lot of these forums, but still haven't figured out how to fix it on my laptop. So, I made my own topic.
Anyways. My dad gave me this laptop since he got a new one, so it's a hand-me-down which means I don't have this startup disk that I keep seeing talked about. I've tried Safe Boot, but when I do it with Command + V, it says all sorts of things that I just don't understand, and there is a lot of talk about the Apple Power Management? Such as:
    com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement isn't a valid mach-o (magic is cefaedfe)
    error mapping module file com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement
can't map com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement in preparation for loading
    couldn't alloc class "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement"
Etc, etc. And then the last lines that it ends with say:
    BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2
[HCIController][configurePM] power parent ready after 1 tries
And it just stays there and doesn't boot up.
I honestly don't know what any of this means, or if it is even relevant to why my PowerBook won't boot past the Apple screen. If you have any information on how I could fix it, that'd be great. Also, if you have any questions that would help you figure it out, ask away and I will answer them.
    Thanks a lot.

    MixtapeChick:
Welcome to Apple Discussions. Congratulations on your "new" PowerBook. I suggest that you begin with this combination procedure:
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
    • Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
    • Release the keys and immediately hold down Shift key to start up in Safe Mode.
    • Log in and empty Trash.
    • Restart normally and log in.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Installed helpdesk to sles11sp1 vmware and won't startup

    Hi,
I installed the service desk to sles11sp1 for vmware and it won't startup.
I am also running zenworks configuration mgmt 11 RC3 on the same server.
    I installed with:
    java -install install.jar -console
When prompted for a port I took the default 8700. It gave me a null and then prompted for a 1 to continue. So I selected 1 and continued.
    If I http://ip:8700 I get nothing.
    If I netstat -a -n|grep 8700 I get nothing.
What do I need to do to get this to work? Also I thought I could get this service desk integrated with zenworks configuration management?

Firefox won't startup so I can get to its preferences, profiles or anything else for that matter. This happens every time I try to start it up. I've recently reloaded my system software and transfered my systems settings from a backup hard drive that Time Machine (Mac app.) saved.

Firefox 4 versions and later do not run on a PowerPC Mac.
Firefox 4 and later require at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.

    Hey Kenneth,
So it sounds as if your iPad is not responding at all when you try to turn it on, is that correct? If so, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
If you get it to start up and it is still not recognized by iTunes on your Mac, use the steps in this article to troubleshoot that issue -
If you don't see your connected device in iTunes for Mac - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • My TC won't startup with ethernet cables connected.

It will start up fine w/out ethernet cables, but with ethernet, it won't startup.  I have two wired connections, my thunderbolt display/mbp and my cannon printer.
It will sit with amber light solid.
When I disconnect the two ethernet cables, it will startup fine.  Then I connect the two cables and everything is good.
This is a new from apple store today 2tb TC.  It's taken about 2 hours to get it setup until now I've figured out the ethernet cable issue.  Is there a fix?  I'm probably going to exchange it tomorrow or in the next couple of days if there's no fix provided.

Well, it's working fine today.  I'll continue to try it over the next couple of days and if it happens more, I'll take it back for an exchange.  It happend quite a few times last night.
I have apple care for my mbp, so this should be covered on it.  About 1.5 years left.
    Thanks.
I'll update this post if I end up needing to exchange it.

  • My G4 AGP won't startup after turning on firewire target disk mode

Can any one help me on this? I have a G4 AGP Graphics Mac running 10.4.11.
I turned on firewire target disk mode in the startup utilities to transfer files to my G5. The G4 started up in Firewire just fine and I could open it up as a drive on my G5, but the problem now is that the G4 won't startup in anything but firewire mode.
So my question is: How do you shut off the firewire target disk mode? I have tried all the keyboard commands at startup and inserted the Tiger install disk and holding the C key, but nothing will let me get me passed the Firewire Icon at startup.

It sounds like your hard drive is bad. If you can see it in Disk Utility you may still be able to get your files off of it. If you have one of the MacBooks with the removable battery it's very easy to put in a new hard drive.
Here's instructions on replacing your hard drive http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088

Put your old hard drive in an external case and after you've formatted your new hard drive and installed your operating system on it plug in your old hard drive and see if it is recognized by the new system. If so then transfer whatever files you want to the new hard drive

  • Powerbook won't sleep if USB mouse, printer attached: is there fix?

    Hi there,
Thanks to someone, I now know that my powerbook won't stay asleep more than a couple seconds, because I have various USB items attached (mouse, printer, Wacom tablet). I've been having to unplug from the USB port, if I want to put my computer to sleep.
This seems a little ridiculous to me, so I figure there must be a third-party app out there that fixes this issue. Is there? Or is there some other way to fix this, without having to unplug?
    Thanks,
    Malcolm

That sounds like a good idea. I've just tried it and it did nothing but i've found info on the following page that has a different set of keys. It did restart twice as described but the problem is still there:

  • Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD

Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Jon

Is your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer). If you can select the Apple Hardware Test, I'd recommend doing the Extended Test, which will test the hardware, including the RAM.
For the disappearing disk space, you could have some process that is going bezerk and filling up the log files. In any event, to see where you disk space is being used, download and run Omni DiskSweeper.
