Powerbook won't stay awake

This is weird. My battery shows full charge, but my computer randomly goes to sleep. Most of the time I can wake it back up with any button, but sometimes it won't wake up and I have to remove the battery to make it restart again. Is this a battery problem or something else? Its been happening for some months now.

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
Cheers!

  • Won't stay awake

    Please help!
My G5 won't stay awake. Yesterday when I was using my computer, it went into slep mode while I was online. I pressed a key on the key board, and it woke back up for a few seconds, and then went back to sleep. I went through this a few times, and it kept doing the same thing. I was eventually able to keep it awake long enough to shut it down. Today, it was doing the same thing, so I shut it down, and unplugged it for a while, and when I plugged it in and turned on again, it would still only stay awake for a few seconds. Rign now, it is unplugged.
Any help at all would be greatly appriciated!

  • PowerBook won't stay closed!

My girlfriend's 12" PowerBook G4 will not stay closed. There is nothing wrong with the latch - the latch activates just fine and keeps the lid closed to the unit. However, it doesn't close enough - the screen will remain on and the unit will not go to sleep unless we put something on top of it (like a remote control, etc.).
Does anybody have any suggestions to fix this problem?

Is the Powerbook still covered under AppleCare Warranty? If it is, I would suggest you call them, to have them take care of this issue.
If you have to put a book on top, to make it go to sleep, there is a pretty serious issue, in my opinion. Has it been dropped or damaged?
    Hope it gets fixed soon!

  • PB Won't Stay Awake!  Please help!

In November, I upgraded to Leopard and added additional memory. The computer has been running fine until about a month ago when the fan began to run longer with more noise. Now, my PB will just randomly go to sleep, and it is getting worse. It use to happen every 15 minutes or so. Now, it is every couple of minutes. I ran "Repair Permissions," and when it can finish, it fixed a few small things. What is happening to my PowerBook? How/Can I fix it? Thanks for any help you can offer!.

    Hi Beau!
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much free space is available?
Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
A 40 GB Hard Drive, should have 5 GB, available.

  • MacBook Pro won't stay awake with external display AND power connected

I've been using my MacBook Pro with an external 23" Apple display for several months, always with the lid closed and with no problems. Suddenly, I can no longer keep the MacBook awake when its lid is closed. *The AC power IS connected.* I plug in the display, close the lid, wake the system with my external keyboard, but then it will quickly go to sleep again after a few seconds. No matter what I've tried I get the same behavior.
Perhaps coincidence, perhaps not, I installed the Leopard graphics update a few weeks ago. Could this be a cause?

Apple did actually acknowledge this as a known issue with people running 10.5.2 with the graphics update, and are investigating it. There's some further discussion at this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1394449&tstart=0
Anyway, what worked for me was powering down, connecting my external display, keyboard, etc., powering up, and immediately closing the lid. It seems to behave better now, though I haven't rebooted since, although I have switched back and forth between running with the external display, and running without it, without any problems.

  • When I close the lid to my Macbook Pro, it won't stay awake.

I am trying to hook up a SAMSUNG SyncMaster B2330 monitor to my MacBook Pro so that I can close the lid and work with my wireless mouse and keyboard instead of the laptop screen.  I have limited desk space and I dont have room to have two monitors open.
When I close the lid and wiggle the mouse, my computer wakes up for a second, but then quickly goes back to sleep. I am not currently plugged into power, but I am running on battery.

  • Win XP won't stay awake

I've got XP running in Bootcamp on a Macbook Pro (a setup unofficially endorsed by the DV Rack techs).
Even with ALL the Power Options set to Never, and using the AC adapter, Win goes to sleep and logs me out after about 15 minutes unless I hit a key or touch the kbd. When I go back to it, I have to click on my user icon to get the Win desktop again. What else would affect this? Is there a PC utility that would prevent it?
Makes shooting more stressful when I have to remember to keep poking the laptop.
    Thanks!

Macbook Pros don't have BIOSes, they use whats called Intel's EFI. It's like the next evolution of BIOSes, it can do a lot more, yadda yadda yadda. And that's probably not the problem, he probably just has his power settings wrong.

  • Powerbook won't sleep if USB mouse, printer attached: is there fix?

    Hi there,
Thanks to someone, I now know that my powerbook won't stay asleep more than a couple seconds, because I have various USB items attached (mouse, printer, Wacom tablet). I've been having to unplug from the USB port, if I want to put my computer to sleep.
This seems a little ridiculous to me, so I figure there must be a third-party app out there that fixes this issue. Is there? Or is there some other way to fix this, without having to unplug?
    Thanks,
    Malcolm

That sounds like a good idea. I've just tried it and it did nothing but i've found info on the following page that has a different set of keys. It did restart twice as described but the problem is still there:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Thanks for trying though... Any other suggestions?

  • G5 either shuts down overnite or stays awake all night but loses cursor?

My G5 has started shutting itself down every night from sleep. Prior to this it was staying awake all night, but losing its cursor. Ran Disk warrior and TechTool Pro with no serious problems. It won't run Apple Hardware Test-holding C key won't load AHT. Can't figure out what the problem is. Have 139GB free on 152 GB machine. Any ideas?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It's option key to boot AHT cd. You can run it, but firmware and OS updates makes the disk veriosn obsolete. So don't panick over a false positive.
I would backup files and c boot from the installer disk, select Disk Utility and Repair Disk/Permissions see if that works. Also disable hard drive sleep in System Preferences>Energy
If not repeat above and Erase w/Zero option and reinstall the OS. If your going to bother with all that, might as well make the jump to Tiger and iLife '06 (not included with Tiger)

  • PowerBook Won't Boot Past the Apple and Spinning Flower Screen...

I've been reading a lot of these forums, but still haven't figured out how to fix it on my laptop. So, I made my own topic.
Anyways. My dad gave me this laptop since he got a new one, so it's a hand-me-down which means I don't have this startup disk that I keep seeing talked about. I've tried Safe Boot, but when I do it with Command + V, it says all sorts of things that I just don't understand, and there is a lot of talk about the Apple Power Management? Such as:
    com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement isn't a valid mach-o (magic is cefaedfe)
    error mapping module file com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement
can't map com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement in preparation for loading
    couldn't alloc class "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement"
Etc, etc. And then the last lines that it ends with say:
    BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2
[HCIController][configurePM] power parent ready after 1 tries
And it just stays there and doesn't boot up.
I honestly don't know what any of this means, or if it is even relevant to why my PowerBook won't boot past the Apple screen. If you have any information on how I could fix it, that'd be great. Also, if you have any questions that would help you figure it out, ask away and I will answer them.
    Thanks a lot.

    MixtapeChick:
Welcome to Apple Discussions. Congratulations on your "new" PowerBook. I suggest that you begin with this combination procedure:
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
    • Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
    • Release the keys and immediately hold down Shift key to start up in Safe Mode.
    • Log in and empty Trash.
    • Restart normally and log in.
Let us know how it goes.

All of a sudden, my eMac won't stay asleep. I've turned off all the settings in Energy Saver (including the Wake options for modem/LAN). I also have no USB or Firewire connections.

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.

  • Highlighting text won't stay on

When I highlight text it often won't stay on, and when it does and I try to move the selection, it just beeps at me and sits there.  What's up?

Ok. In System Preferences > General, Apple applies the term “Highlight” instead of “Selection” color.
In Pages v5(.2), I select a passage of text and it reflects my first sentence color setting. You can leave this alone and visit any menu or side panel setting, and the selection in the body text will remain selected. It will remain selected, if you leave the Pages document and click in another application. When you return to this Pages document, click anywhere but the body text to regain document focus. The next click in the body text should be a click/hold/drag on the selection to move it, or a press of the space bar to remove the selected text. This is mouse-based behavior.
If you are using a Trackpad, whether built-in or external, you must be very careful not to brush against it while in your Pages document, or your selection focus will be lost.
I am using the above Pages on OS X 10.9.4 and do not experience a loss of selection, or an inability to drag/move or remove the selection. I have tried with both mouse and Trackpad following the preceding guidelines and cannot reproduce what you have stated.

  • New Pioneer DVR-110 installed, "patchburned", BUT drive won't stay closed.

Have had some good advice on how to intall a new DVD/CD drive, but after installing a New Pioneer DVR-110 (I thought succesfully) on my G4, and downloading Patchburn for Panther, the DVD drive now won't function as the computer keeps ejecting or opening the drive tray.
After installing the drive, I installed Patchburn, and Toast did recognize the drive. I then tried to verify disc permissions on the computer and it kept getting hung up during repair/verify saying it lost connection with the drive manager. Tried Onyx to repair/verify permissions and it too gets hung up. (Had to force quit)
Any advice on how to get the drawer of the DVD drive to stay closed and what else I need to do to get it working?... Alas I can not even reinstall my original OSX software now as I can't boot from the disc drive since it won't stay closed.
