Powerbook wont boot, and im depressed about it....

Well,
I tried to update my powerbook with one of apple's security updates and left the comp alone for a wile and when i came back the update window was gone so i figured that it, for some reason, restarted itself so i tried to open safari and the stupid icon just sat there and bounced but never opened so i used force quit and tried it again to another app and the samething happened so i resetrted the comp and got the apple with the spinning gear, it normally takes about 5 mins before i get the login wondow so i waited and ten minutes later listened to see if the HDD was doing anything and it wasn't so i used a force restart and the same thing happend. So i go onto the internet with another comp and look up some possible reasons.....i got into single user and verbose modes and see some possible reasons that this may be happening such as something in verbose mode saying malformed library and an error number in single user "errno=55"
Any help will be appriciated!

Here is what I found for error code -55:

Apart from booting into single user mode, I am not sure what else you have done in attempting to fix your computer's problem. Here is what I suggest:
Begin with Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back and let me know how it went. If it does not work for you, please describe exactly what responses you got.
Good luck.
cornelius
PS: Just looked at your earlier thread and note that you do not have an install disk. I suggest that you get disks appropriate to your OS, or purchase new Tiger disks. In addition, please update us on how the trouble-shooting procedures recommended in that thread worked out for you so that we will have a fuller picture.

  • IMac wont boot and has yellow squares at launch!!!

Ok, so Friday as I come home from buying Snow Leopard all excited because I also bought an DVI to HDMI cable to hook my 24 inch 3.06 10.5.8 iMac up to my TV. So as my laptop is upgrading to snow leopard I decide to hook up the TV. I plug the cables in and all is good. I went out and downloaded an app called TV Row.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/30081
It takes front row and puts it on an external monitor. Perfect, they have a brand new update out for snow leopard (which the iMac doesn't have yet) so i think its all good. But when I restart the computer it wont boot and I get a crazy boot screen with light yellow squares everywhere. It gets to the grey apple logo and the gear spins for about a minute and then locks up. I noticed that it was extremely hot!! I went and got a fan and put on the back of it but if i leave it running for about 15 minutes it will burn my hand. I have network access to it so im completely backed up and and down to start from scratch on it. Any ideas. Ill link a picture of what the yellow squares look like.

    Please Help!!!

If you put the Mac OS X Install DVD in the drive and restart your computer while holding down the Option key, and then click on the DVD when it appears on the screen, are you able to boot into the Installer? If so, can you try reinstalling Mac OS X (using the Archive and Install option) or perhaps restoring from a Time Machine backup?
If you're not even able to boot from the DVD, I'd suggest calling in an appointment and taking it to Apple right away before any significant damage is caused to the hardware.

  • G4 powerbook wont boot up after safari update

    Hi,

  • My imac wont boot  and a small square shows up next to the cursor

    Hi
my imac wont boot and a small square shows up next to the cursor. I can open in safe mode. I have reinstalled the OSX, but can't boot from back-up.
    Any advice?

OK.....I figured it out.....after reading endless threads on the cursor issue, I found out that apple calls the cursor a MOUSE POINTER..! and the square that follows it a 'corruption'...GO FIGURE!
Anyway, this is what I did.
I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion....online install. It didn't resolve the issue. Same problems
Then, I tried reinstalling from the original DVD install disc....this wasn't possible (no access sign over install icon).
So I finally erased my hard drive (after rebooting command - r), BUT NOT BEFORE BACKING UP MY FILES, APPLICATIONS, SETTINGS and any other important data!!!!!!!
    Then started up command R
    Then reinstalled Mountain Lion online
My iMac started up like it does when you install 'out of the box'...follow the instructions....
my cursor, or mouse pointer is now free of it's 'corruption', and boots up just fine!
Hope this helps anyone out there with the same issue

  • Powerbook wont startup and have no install disks

My powerbook G4 starts up installs lots of extensions until it announces that it is "waiting for Apple file service" and then stops.
I am fairly sure that I didnt get any install disks when i bought it (long time ago now) because all the software was preloaded and I never got round to making one while the machine worked (stupid me). Surely I should be able to get a bootable disk which I can stick in the dvd drive so that I can then run the diagnostic software which is (you guessed it) on the hard drive which wont boot!!!!
My wife has a machine which is a HP running MS Vista which I could use to download and burn a bootable CD/DVD (I think) but I cant find one anywhere on the net.
Please help before she tells me again how great her new computer is and I mournfully glance over again at my dead mac
    Thanks in anticipation

    Welcome To Discussions bunsen x!
Even if you are successful, at resurrecting the PowerBook, you really do need a set of system discs.
If you call Apple Customer Service, you may be able to obtain replacement system discs, for a fee.
Also, If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
    Additional info in these links.
Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
Download the Media Exchange Program Order Form Here. Note that the date on that form is June 22, 2007, but the program has been extended in the past.
I suggest that if you choose that option, call Apple 1-800-275-2273 and ask if that program is still available.
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.

  • My Powerbook wont boot the OS

Ive been having some trouble with my powerbook. ive sifted through the forum and looked at the support articles but i cant seem to find one that adresses the problem i am having.
the first problem i had was one morning going to turn on my powerbook and it would not power on even thought the battery indicator said it was at about %50. later that day after multiple attempts it finally turned on. at which point i saved all important files to an external hard drive. at that time i had been running tiger for about two years, but i decided to erase the hard drive and load panther os.
my computer booted up in panther but when i went to update the os system update program would freeze up. i was frustrated and decided that since i couldnt update the os or any of the other programs that i would just load tiger.
however after loading tiger i could not get past the gray screen with the apple and the spinning cog bellow. since then i can erased and reloaded both panther and tiger with the same result, stuck on the same screen.
i would also like to note:
i have not had a kernel panic screen during all of this.
i have run disk utility via the system disks and it reports that the hard drive is fine. no repairs, and verified.
there are no other devices connected to the computer, and i have not added any third party hardware to the computer.
i have tried to boot up in safe mode with the same results, the gray screen with the apple and spinning cog.
im very frustrated, as i have tried everything i can think of and making no progress. please help!

    erk0000:
Your interpretation of the mass storage error is correct, alas The only remedy is to install a new HDD.
Your computer will support a 2.5" (P)ATA/IDE HDD. These drives come in two speeds (not counting the older 4200 rpm), 7200 rpm in capacities up to 100 GB, and 5400 rpm in capacities up to 250 GB. Most modern drives come with a 3 year manufacturer's warranty, with the exception of the Seagate drives, which have a warranty of 5 years. http://macbuy.macworld.com/search_attrib.php?page_id=11&st=filter&popup2%5B%5D=1 :394&popup3%5B%5D=20:144&popup6%5B%5D=2:109&. You can screen for capacity or rotational speed in the sidebar.
If you plan to install the HDD yourself, it is intensive, but quite doable. You will find step by step directions with pictures at ifixit. Separating the upper case is the trickies part. Be sure to use a non marring plastic spudger so as not to damage the case. Here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx 6 screw driver is critical.
    • I use small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nest them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
Please do post back should you have further questions.
    Cheers

  • Powerbook wont boot

Hi - I recently purchased a used 12" powerbook (877:40:10.3) and within 2 days of use, when starting up, the apple will appear along with the 'timer' and it will continue to spin until out of battery (i.e. hours) without booting up (or going to the desktop, just endless 'timer'). I've tried booting from the disk and it will work but when I try to first aid it doesn't work and even worse, when I try to re-install the system software (last ditch effort) it doesn't recognize any HD to install onto. Anyone have any suggestions? (The only other thing i've tried is resetting the pram - no luck). . .Any help is greatly appreciated. . .joel

Your used unit possible had bad HD. I'm sorry that you have that experience with your used mac. But you have to remember when you buy used mac sam like you buy used car. have to inspect it before you buy it.
if you are brave enough to take apart the unit and it is not that hard just be careful, take your time, the guide available from ifixit website.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/53.10.0.html
Buy the HD from any online or local reseller. OWC is good place to start or newegg also.
Make sure you buy 2.5" notebook HD seagate is ok and have the longest warranty among other HD manufacturers.
    Good luck

  • Powerbook wont boot anymore

I have a problem with my powerbook. I wanted to install Leopard beta from the external firewire hard drive, so I set the target startup mode on (I thought it will boot the laptop from the external hard drive)
After that I could not boot my mac at all!
it gets to the gray screen with the spinning wheel and stuck there.
The last message in the verbose mode is
    [HCIController][setupHardwate] AFH is Supported
I can not boot from that external hard drive (), and I don't have original disks anymore...
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    anton

See if you can boot in single user mode. Power on and hold down command-s keys. Do a file system check: type
    fsck -yf
    hit return.
If the disk is repaired do it again until there is no repair indicated two times. Then shut down: type
    shutdown -h now
    hit return.
Then restart. What are you doing with Leopard beta? This must be unauthorized. Read the Terms of Use of this forum.

  • Mac wont boot, auto restarts after about 10 seconds

    Hello,
My friend's mac has broken and it starts to boot for about 10 seconds, then auto reboots. He has tried booting in safe mode (holding down shift) but it doesnt change. Does anyone know how to fix it? He thinks it may be a virus, so is there a way to get it working so he can install AV software?
    Thanks, Black_Sirrah239

Great Help so far, just to add...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there.

  • Laptop randomly wont boot and randomly freezes. (w/ pics)

I am having some serious problems with my Mid-2007 flavor Macbook Pro. It started after I had not charged or used it for about a month while on winter break from school. I got back and let the battery charge fully before I tried to turn it on. I turned it on and was greeted by this scary looking screen.
    http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/3213/dsc0001uc7.jpg
It originally would also give me problems trying to boot windows as well.
    http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/1606/dsc0008nx8.jpg
But would eventually allow me to consistently boot windows and sporadically boot OSX. Windows seems to run pretty smoothly but OSX will run for up to an hour or two (usually less) before doing something like this:
    http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/2329/dsc0002gw1.jpg
I have more success booting in single-user mode but that screen sometimes looks like this:
    http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/9997/dsc0007aw2.jpg
I am guessing it is some sort of hardware problem and I am planning on being a very poor person soon, but would a Leopard reinstall serve me any good? Tried to document the weird screens I have been getting as best as I could, but if you need additional pictures, my computer has been freezing enough to get many more so just ask. Thanks for any help.

    1. Mid-2007 flavor does not tell anyone the model. Indicating the GHz does. In any case:

I tried turning on my friend g4 400 mhz sawtooth and it makes 3 loud static noises during the typical powerup noise. then it wont do anything else, the light is on, sounds like its running, but its not giving me anything. I am not sure what that sound is indicating. any help would be appreciated. thankyou

    Hi, Dustin!
I'm no expert on this, but my gut says there may be a problem in one of two areas: RAM (the modules or the bus interface itself) or Video (monitor, cabling, or video card).
Try resetting PRAM and NVRAM. Try the NVRAM reset via open firmware as explained in the link.
Although you might not be able to successfully do so, disconnect all peripherals except for the keyboard, mouse, and monitor, and then try booting to and running the Apple Hardware Test Disk (if you have it). Otherwise, remove/swap around the RAM modules and test startup. Reset the video card and test again. If you have another monitor available, swap it and test again...

  • HELP!! Computer wont boot and i have finals

When i turn on the computer (I have Leopard) i get a gray screen and a question mark. I really need it for finals - can anyone help...

You should try booting from the system disks by putting in Disk 1 and holding down the C key while booting. Once booted you should navigate to disk utility instead of reinstalling the software. The ? mark is a sure sign of disk failure or disk corruption - if you're lucky the start up files are just corrupted and you should be able to fix it by repairing the disk. Sometimes a utility like DiskWarrior can sort out the Directory problem and get you rebooting again. If the drive does not show when trying to repair this disk, your HD has failed and you will have to replace it. Good luck!

  • GE60 Wont Boot and F3 Recovery gives blank screen

    Hi,
I purchased a MSI GE60 yesterday. On the second reboot the system said it was updating the system and during this time, the laptop went into sleep mode. Now every time I power up the laptop one of 2 things happens.
    1) it gives me the MSI logo and the spinner for about 20 minutes then says it is repairing windows. Gets to about 6% after about a further 20 minutes and then turns off.
    2) it gives me the MSI logo and the spinner for about 10 minutes and then powers off
In both cases the Blue Turbo light stays on all the time.
I have tried using the F3 Recovery. I get the MSI Logo and the spinner and a message saying it is preparing to repair windows. This lasts for about 10 seconds and then I get a blank screen. The screen stays blank for about 15 -20 minutes and then the laptop powers down.
Does anyone have any advice about how I can get the system recovery to work.

    Hi!
I have a GE60 2oc and had the same problem and found out that it is because the notebook is delivered with nearly 30 language packs and at each restart windows remove 1 (ONE) language pack. I.e. it takes 30 restarts to get rid of all the unused language packs.
If you run lpksetup as administrator you can delete the language packs you do not need. However it do take a lot of time to do, but you get rid of them in one go!

  • My powerbook wont boot past gray screen

    Hello there,
I had this problem for more then a year then 2 days ago I was able to start it in safe mood witch I never tried before. I was planning on not turning it off but it got stuck. Now it sometimes dose not even show the small loading fan under the apple or takes a long time to show. I rested the PRAM , But nothing. I don’t have the CD that erase or restores the computer they both broke a while ago. Any info or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You

    Hello,
Let me get this correct. You have a PowerBook yet you've indicated you are running Windows XP. That is impossible. On your PBook, go to the Apple logo top left on your screen, click the Apple, then click " About This Mac" ... a window will open. Where it says: Mac OS X... just under that it will tell you exactly which version.
Considering you do not have the system restore disks that came with your PBook, you haven't anyway to check the drive for errors. So I suggest you take the PBook in for service. Look for a local Apple store or an Apple reseller that provides technical support.
