PowerbookG4 Runs on Battery But Won't Recognize/Recharge with Power Supply

My 15" 1.67gh Powerbook G4 will run just fine from battery power. The power supply does not charge the battery, though the amber light does turn on when it's connected. The screen power management display acts as if it's unplugged and doesn't recognize the plugged in power supply.
I have another G$ so can recharge the battery, and the power supply cord works fine in that one. I have tried the 5 second reset method (with the power supply and battery out)
This machine was used with an old battery that caused overheating during the summer to the point where the computer turned itself off.
Is the internal power supply fried? Is there a fuse that can be replaced? Is there some kind of other software/firmware procedural fix that I can try?
How much do these cost if I have to have it fixed? Is it worth doing for a computer this old? Can I just buy the part and try to install it? Is there a way to get it properly diagnosed without spending a ton of money?

There are 4 components to the charging circuit: power adapter, DC-in card, battery, and logic board. Unfortunately there is no automated test to determine what is causing any charging issues, so you have to solve it by elimination.
Since you have a working power adapter that will charge the battery on another PowerBook, that's good. And the system runs on battery power alone, so the battery sounds OK. That leaves either the DC-in card or the logic board as suspect. DC-in card would be the less expensive component to change, as they run $75-$95. A replacement logic board can run $300-$400. Those are used parts prices only without labor.
You could take your system to an Apple store, or better yet call them first, to see if they are even still repairing Powerbooks. If yes, see if you can have it sent to the Apple depot for repair (assuming you're in the US). As long as the case isn't banged up, it should run around $350 to have whatever is wrong fixed. If the case is banged up, it can run into the $650 range as they'll replace the case too. Comes back with a 90 day warranty. If they do the repair in the store, the price goes up... a logic board replacement in the store is around $750, as I recall. If you go this route, ensure you have a hard drive backup too before sending it off.

  • Thinkpad Yoga S1 Runs off AC but won't charge the battery

I have recently purchased an S1, which is now having an issue that I can't seem to resolve on my own. The laptop works (almost) perfectly on A/C, but doesn't charge the battery. I noticed yesterday the battery was low (which was surprising, because I had only recently unplugged it) - so I plugged it in to charge. At which point, the battery icon in the system tray stated "8% (plugged in, not charging).I've tried the following to fix this: 1) Leaving it plugged in overnight completely off. 2) Running the battery calibration (fails w/ unexpected error). 3) Tried turning off battery optimization (Option is removed in newer version of drivers, so NA to my issue). 4) Tried reinstalling the power management drivers anyway (even though I already had the newer version). 5) Holding down the power button for 30 seconds, both plugged in and not plugged in (suggestion from forum). 6) Holding down the reset button (pin reset on the mobo) for 30 seconds, both plugged in and not plugged in. 7) Charging from BIOS. 8) Letting the battery run down to 0% in BIOS, then rebooting on A/C (another forum suggestion).  Now I'm just at 0% plugged in and not charging. Previously I said the computer almost worked perfectly, the almost is that the CPU is stuck at ~800mhz, even with all power management turned off (including Speedstep in BIOS) and the power profile set to high performance. Can anyone think of anything else I can try before I give up and send this thing back? It was working perfectly for the last couple of weeks or so, including getting ~ 4, 5 hours of battery life, so unless the battery failed very suddenly I can't imagine why it would just start refusing to charge.

well I replaced the battery with another one I bought (exact same model for the battery SONY 45N1705, I was hoping I would get another battery version because I notice there is an update for the other battery revision that fixes issues with battery stopped charging. http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds001322. I forced the bios update from 1.07 to latest 1.24 using olydbg to skip the battery check. this did not help with anything relating to the battery. now I am stuck again where I was at the beginning..... im looking at buying a board replacement.... also I was looking at replacing the power supply but I check the voltage and the amps, and it is correctly matching what is written on the back of the laptop. still getting the 0% plugged in and charging.

  • My computer will charge my iPhone, but won't recognize or sync it?

My iPhone 4S was working perfectly fine, but now my laptop suddenly won't recognize it! This all started after I bought a new charger for my laptop. My other one quit working, so I bought a replacement, and now I'm having this problem. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I figured I would mention it.
Anyways, when I plug it in, it will charge, but it won't show up in My Computer or in iTunes. I know it's not the cable or the phone itself, because other computers will recognize it. I have tried pretty much everything. I've uninstalled iTunes and then reinstalled the latest version, I've gone through all of the troubleshooting things on the Apple support site. I've tried different cables and different USB ports also. One thing I've noticed is that when I go to my Device Manager, it doesn't even look like my iPhone is plugged in. It won't show up anywhere. I have no idea what to do next. Any ideas?

What happens when you have your computer well charged, but unplug your computer and let it run on battery power?
Does iTunes then recognize your iPhone?

  • Hp zv5242qv laptop with windows vista will not run on battery but will run on power adapter

Hello, I have a HP zv5242qv pavilion zv5000 series laptop with windows vista installed. I can run it on the power adapter with and without the battery installed but it will not power up on just the battery, the battery is new and fully charged. When I plug in the power adapter the battery light on the front of the laptop comes o then goes off, anyone have any ideas about my problem ?

    Hello,
The situation you describe looks like the unit has problems with the battery, but you say the battery is new and is fully charged.
Then, the issue might be with the system board and maybe there isn't anyhting you can do.
You can try to remove the battery and the ac adapter, and keep the power button pressed for 30 seconds, then connect the ac adapter, turn on the unit, then when in windows put the battery in place, see how it is detected, the power level and restart the PC. See if the unit restarts with the battery in place, if yes, then shutdown the unit.
See what happens and report back.

My iphone 4s does not recognize my bluetooth device - I don't know why
My bluetooth device is a jawbone and I have turned it on and sitting next to my iphone which is searching for bluetooth devices but will not recognize it

I just tried turning the jawbone off and then turning it on and shaking it 4 times but the iphone 4s still won't recognize my jawbone
Do I need to unpair the jawbone from my blackberry first?  And if so, how do I do that?
so after double shaking, is the ring flashing red +white? If it is not, then it is not in pairing mode. (I'm assuming you have the ERA) And you see nothing on the iphone? Nothing is found? Or is the device found, but not paired.
try placing the jawbone in pairing mode first, and then turn off/on the iphone blue tooth.
I don't think you need to unpair with the BB. But you can try. go to BB settings and there should be a way to  forget the device.

  • Satellite L40 won't shut down with power connected, and won't go in standby

Hi everybody. I hope someone can help me. Basically, there are two problems: one with shutting the laptop (Satellite L40-17U (Vista 32-bit Home Premium SP1) ) down when the power is connected, and one with closing the lid and putting it to sleep.
    1. Since a few weeks, it suddenly doesn't want to shut down, whenever the power is connected. When it is on battery, it will shut down. When the power is connected and I try shutting it down, it seems like it shuts down (all activity ceases and the LEDs go off) for about 1 or 2 seconds, and then it goes back on.
    2. When I close the lid (all settings in Vista are set to put the laptop in 'sleep' status when the lid is closed) the laptop goes into a state from which it can only be recovered by shutting it down by pressing the on/off button for about 10 seconds to completely shut it down. When closing the lid, only the battery LED keeps blinking orange (the way it should be), but apparently the laptop keeps consuming power, because when I reboot it later (first having to shut it down as described above) the battery tends to be quite a emptier than it was before rebooting it (like going from 100% to 65% in 30 minutes, while being in 'sleep' state). Also, when I open the lid, the other LEDs do go on again (green), but nothing happens.
After rebooting by first pressing the on/off button for 10 seconds to shut it down, I frequently get a message that Windows could not be started, and have to run System Repair.
I've just done a completely clean installation with the product recovery CD (didn't install SP1 yet), upgraded the BIOS to v1.90, but the problem remains.
I'm afraid my only option will be to bring it away for a warranty repair, but knowing that these repairs can take weeks, I'd prefer to try a solution anyone here could recommend me first. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks,

    Hi guys
Never had such issue on my notebook but regarding to another users here in the forum the BIOS might help to solve such strange notebook behavior
To be honest the shut down issue is not known to me I noticed an standby issue on my notebook but the BIOS update helped.
Therefore I recommend updating the BIOS firstly.
If the issue will still appear, then the ASP should take a look into the notebook.

  • G4 1.42 dualie still won't start after replacing power supply.

This Machine was turning off randomly for about a week when it just stopped working. The power light would go on when pressed, but nothing happens.
Tried plugging into a wall socket instead of power strip. Nothing. Reset PMU. Nothing. Battery is good.
Read though many reports and determined the culprit was the Power Supply. The power supply was replaced with original Apple part. The problem remains. Press the power button and the light goes on, release it and the light goes off. Nothing spins up, no chimes, nothing.
Now I'm reading it may be the power button - someone solved the problem by attaching an older keyboard with a start button. I don't have one to test.
I don't want to keep shooting in the dark on this one.
    Thanks for any help.

Hi wagsfx, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Good research so far!

Too bad you're not closer, I have 5 I don't need, because buying 8 was cheaper than buying on on eBay!
Anyway, my suspicion is that if that KB thing works it is the Power Button assembly, but that other things will start going wrong shortly there after.
It's likely not any consolation, but I think the MDDs are the worst G4 ever turned out, I wish I could have my $20+K back from buying, repairing, & upgrading them, since all 3 are now dead as a doornail.
Hang on though, there's many far greater experts here than I, & I hope they can drop in with some better ideas for you!

I have a Macbook 2.1 that runs 10.5.8.   I cannot get it to start on battery power. It will run for over an hour on the battery, if you start it with the charger, but even then it shows a 0% charge! I've tried pulling the battery out while it's booted, pulling battery out and discharging the system by holding the power switch, nothing seems to make it work. any ideas? It has all the updates Apple offers, too.

    Try resetting the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Using a windows 7 Dell laptop with my printer and it's been working fine. Suddenly, my wireless indicator on the printer is on, but I can't get the printer to recognize the network at all, and obviously can't print from my Laptop wirelessly. Works fine by USB.  I have run all of the diagnostics tools on the hp website, to no avail.. The printer is only 18 months old - Hate to toss it out just for this! Any ideas of how to fix this? I've reset the router, hard reset the printer and followed all of the diagnostic steps. I'm baffled!

Yes.  Turn the printer off, hold the # and 6 keys while and a bit after turning it back on.  The printer will reset.  If this does not work you could try the same thing with # and 9 keys, but I doubt it will do any better.

OK. I downloaded limewire...and then i downloaded iTunes. The limewire comes with iTunes integration once you have both and when you do a folder comes up in ur itunes mainscreen about owners limewire tunes.Well i looked in the troubleshooting part and found out how to get that folder into my library so i could sort them into playlists because im not the only one that uses this computer(and you can't put them into playlists if they aren't in your library)so now once i did that and got my playlists sorted out, now when I download the new songs they go right back into my owners limewire tunes and not the library ... so it's like all that was for nothing.... PLZ HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
      Windows XP
      Windows XP

That's one of the weird things.. it recognizes it maybe 10% of the time. And usually, only after I do the two-button reset. Problem is.. since it won't charge above 2%, anytime I try to do a restore or anything like that using iTunes, my device shuts off and I lose whatever progress I'd made.
So, an update... after reading through a bunch of similar complaints (there are literally 1000's of them so there's NO WAY this isn't somehow ios7 related, thanks a lot APPLE ) I decided to try a restore in recovery mode. After 3 hours and several disconnections... I ended up having to just set it up as a new iPad, as the restore did nothing. Weirdly though... as I was doing the restore in recovery mode.. I noticed I'd gotten up to a 10% charge.. higher than it's been since September, so after setting it up as a new device, I turned it off and plugged it in using the wall charger. 2 hours later and I was up to 38%. Still not great, as my iPad, before ios7 could've fully charged twice in the amount of time it took for me to now get 28% more of a charge. And that's with a fully cleaned out device.. so that really ***** and I'm now more confused than ever.
But I'm gonna leave it overnight charging and see what I come up with tomorrow. Sadly, when I paid $600 for it in February, I never expected to have to play "wait and see" with it...

  • Battery indicator lights show full battery but won't turn on

I have an early 2008 non-unibody MacBook Pro. For about a year now, the status of the battery has been "replace soon." I was still getting a pretty good amount of time off of one charge so I wasn't too worried. This past Saturday morning, I woke up, checked the battery indicator lights on my computer (it had been sleeping since the day before) and it said it had about 60% percent so I opened it. I was on the Internet for about 10 minutes before it shut off without warning. It wouldn't turn back on when I pressed the power button, so I plugged it in and it turned back on. When I checked, the battery status was "replace now." After using it, I turned it back off and left for NYC for the weekend and didn't bring it with me. When I got home last night, I plugged it in and tried turning it on with no luck. The battery indicator light was flashing one light, so I just assumed it would need to charge for a bit before it would turn back on. After about two hours, when I went to bed, it still was flashing just one light. I kept it plugged in over night, and this morning when I checked it, the battery indicator lights showed that it was fully charged, but it still wouldn't turn on. I still kept it plugged in throughout the day just in case, but it still won't turn on even though all the lights are lit. Is the battery just showing me false information, or should I be worried about more than just the battery? Might I have to get a new computer altogether? I bought a replacement battery online so I'll have my answer in a few days, but I was just wondering.

And for what it's worth, I tried reseating the RAM and resetting the SMC, both with no luck. Could it be the logic board? The only reason I think it might not be is because my computer still worked a little bit after it first shut off, it was only after it was off for an extended period of time that it wouldn't turn back on.

  • My Blu-ray drive will play Blu-rays but won't recognize DVDs or CDs

Hi I have a Pavilion dv6 recently had a problem and I restored it back to factory settings. Thing is before I did this I tried making recovery discs. It made it through the first, then half way through the second, but said the second one was full then when I tried to put another disc in it wouldn't recognize it. I took the comp back to factory settings, but the problem still persists. My Blu-ray play is the HP BD-ROM BDCTD03HA . I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I can provide any other info if needed.

I forgot to mention I have tried just about everything and so far nothing has worked. Please I just want my dvd player back!

  • It sees the battery but won't charge it: brand new battery

I had an old (~4-yr-old) battery that had been holding up pretty well. Then one morning, it would no longer hold a charge at all -- if I unplugged the AC adapter, the laptop shut off immediately. The computer still "saw" the battery in the menubar, but was stuck on "Calculating..." and never got above 0%.
I reset the PMU, no help. I ordered a new battery.
The new battery just came, and it has about 10% charge on it as indicated in the menubar. It is stuck on "Calculating..." and the charge is not increasing.
The computer knows the battery is there (no "X" through it) and can even run off it (if I unplug the adapter, computer stays on and shows red-line level in battery icon) but will not charge it.
I've reset the PMU (several times), zapped the PRAM, and reset the nvram. The battery contacts look clean (no obvious dirt or corrosion).
I don't see the Battery Info in "About this Mac..." (it's not listed at all; is this because I'm in OS 10.3.9 or is something else wrong here?) but using ioreg at the command line I get
    "IOBatteryInfo" = ({"Capacity"=4200,"Amperage"=0,"Current"=435,"Voltage"=15282,"Flags"=325,"Absol uteMaxCapacity"=4200})
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Especially since for the last few weeks I've been stuck using my laptop essentially as a desktop computer, very frustrating. Thank you

Hi, m.g.h. Have you ever tried a different, known-good AC adapter, just to eliminate the possibility that the problem resides there? If you plug the adapter in and the adapter ringlight glows green, turn the Powerbook over and press the button on the battery. The lights on the battery should glow green and stay on if the adapter is working correctly.
I don't see the Battery Info in "About this Mac..." (it's not listed at all; is this because I'm in OS 10.3.9...?
Yes, it is. That info doesn't appear in Panther's System Profiler, so you were right to check it in Terminal.
Your battery is obviously connected to the Powerbook, given the Terminal readouts. That being the case, it would seem that the possible causes include a bad (though new) battery; a bad PMU; a bad DC-In board, if you have a DVI Tibook; and a bad AC adapter.
