Powering down ARV when not in use
This may have already been asked (and answered) but, is it possible/advisable to power down ATV when not in use? If so, how is it done? Thanks.
Thanks for this. I found that it didn't stop the harddrive spinning and the until runs really hot! Perhaps it was syncing. I'll have to double check it.
I will continue to try this to see if the harddrive spins down. The problem I have with it is the energy use, which geez guys isn't there enough information around to put such a need of energy conservation into a design, and the noise, which is minimal, but it's my bedroom. It's enough that we have to have these lights shinning in you room with computers asleep and the likes.

How can I get firefox to shut down automatically when not in use for an hour
Sorry, there is no feature for that built into Firefox, and I haven't seen an add-on to add that feature to Firefox.

PS Elements 6 & 8 Slow Down Computer When Not In Use
I currently use PS Elements 8 on a MacBook Pro using 10.6.2 version of the operating system.
When I haven't been using Elements for perhaps 24 hours, I suddenly will notice that Elements is using an amazing amount of CPU cycles - say from 60% to 80%. I use MenuMeters, which shows me that something suddenly is using a lot of CPU cycles. I then switch to the Activity Monitor to see which application is doing this. It always is Elements.
I've waited to see if the problem will go away, but it usually doesn't. The only solution I've come up with is to Quit the application, and relaunch it.
What puzzles me is that I will not have been using Elements for a long time - say 24+ hours. Then, suddenly, the problem occurs. Because this bogs down the computer - and instantly shows up on MenuMeters. So this isn't happening in the background, and I don't notice it. It happens out of the blue. Because this activity bogs down the computer, I notice it almost instantly.
It's puzzling because applications usually don't wake themselves up and start working vigorously - especially when there are no pictures open.
This happened when I had Elements 6, and continues with Elements 8. I've been using Elements since I bought version 3 in December 2004.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this?I've just launched PS Elements more than ten times while holding down on these keys. Elements launches, but absolutely nothing else happens.
At first, I thought that perhaps this keystroke combination might only work on a Windows computer. But with your information in hand, I went into the Elements help file, and found that this is indeed the keystroke combination to use on a Mac. However, this keystroke combination definitely does nothing on my computer.
If you tell me what this preference file is called, or where it is stored on a Mac, I'll delete it manually. -
IMac shuts down unexpectedly when not in use
When I get back to my iMac after a long pause, it has shut down.
This is the log for what happened just before it shut down the last time.

On my machine somehow it is tied to whether I have Wifi turned on or off (whether associated with a connection or not). I typically use my computer near the router and turn off the wifi. Since Mavericks if I turn off my Wifi, it will eventually crash so I have to manually disassociate but leave wifi on to keep my computer from crashing. Not sure where the [com.apple.calendar.store.log.caldav.coredav] errors fit in but I always see them shortly before a crash if wifi is off. -
Mac Shutting down automatically when not in use for awhile
Please excuse my non techinical explanation of this problem !
Model: Macbook Pro5,1
OSX 10.5.7
2.4 GHZ intel core 2 duo
2GB 1067 Mhz DDR3
Im first time mac owner and have very little technical ability ... !
Problem:
Laptop shuts down automatically if idle for about ten minutes ... this time can vary.
Prior to this happening it makes alarming noises which appear to come from the on/off button area. Initially I thought it was a CD banging ... but its not that.
This is the extent of my diagnostics at this stage! I have limited warranty on (based in Ireland) was planning on getting extended apple care warranty only last week ... not sure should i still get the extended warranty now I know this problem exists, cant find apple service centre in Dublin and not sure if I would be covered under limited warranty.
Any advice would be appreciated
thanksHi Bibii and welcome to Discussions,
first of, you have posted in the Mac Pro section not the MacBook Pro section here http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=190
Anyway, is this really a shutdown or is it just sleeping ?
If sleeping check the Energy Savings settings in the System Preferences for when your MBP should go to sleep when inactive.

Ipod Battery down 20% when not in use in one day off charger, normal?
Seems to me that if i leave the ipod off the charger for just 24 hours the battery life indicator shows it down by about 20%
Is this normal? is there a tester for the battery?
The ipod is new from December
Should i do anything to extend battery life?
ThanksThe iPod battery indicator is only a very loose approximation of how much charge there actually is left.
See these.
Beef up my iPod battery.
How to accurately determine your iPod battery life.
Can I make the meter more accurate? -
IMac (Oct 2009) keeps shutting down and restarting when not being used.
At least once a day, usually when not being used, I will see a dialog box that say computer had to restart due to a problem. data in problem report does not clearly state problem - many multi-page entries
Have reinstalled OS 10.8.2 once
this morning tried to restart with safe boot and had spinning beach ball for more than 15 minutes. shut down and restarted nin recovery mode. verified and repaired permissions (all seem to be related to Canon Pronter plug-ins- had an error message yesteday asking if I wanted to repair printer software and I said yes). Printer seems to be working. Had one statement that indicated a screensaver issue-see below
a while back, iTunes album art screensaver hung up with just two album covers flipping in all rows and columns.
after a few restarts, it started working correctly again..- yesterday I set screen saver to never, but still had a crash this morningHere's the latest panic report. BTW, I ran for a while from an external system boot - very sloww (thumbdrive), but nothing happened. However, when I retarted I tried to restart in Safe Mode and the launch never completed (30 minutes without start)

Should I shut down my computer when not in use
should I shut down my computer when not in use, overnight for instance?
Hello! Leaving it on 24/7/365 is perfectly acceptable. You may save some electricity but personally I think you'll pay for it with a more troublesome system. I do however set the monitors to go to sleep. I like the no startup lag time of running 24/7/365. That said, if I lived in an area prone to electrical outages or if my location was prone to lightening strikes I'd probably shut it down and unplugged. Of course with it being unplugged the pram battery may run down. These old G4's have been running 24/7/365 for years now. I do try to restart every few weeks just for good measure! In the end it's your preference. The hardware works best when a constant temperature is maintained. Tom

Mac OSX 10.6.8 Should I keep it in sleep mode when not in use to shut down?
My experience with electronic tends to revolve around thermo stress, and removing all power vs going to sleep tends to be more or less the same. Many components have power totally taken away, and others use so little power they cool off.
However, I found thermo stress occurs a lot more with discrete electronic components (like back in the '80s and our VAX-11/780's which had lot more discrete components) and less with integrated circuits. NOTE: I'm not talking about overheating components, just normal heating/cooling cycles.
All in all I would not worry about it. The OP (Grace 1) should use whatever method is most convent for her. And I would say if she is using a Macbook Air or the new Macbook Pro Retna display (or any other Mac with a solid state drive (SSD)), then booting from shutdown may not take all that long anyway. -
Imac shuts down when not in use
I purchased my 21.5" imac July 9, 2011 with Snow Leopard. No problems for 1 month. Then about August 12th or so, my imac started to mysteriously "shut down" when not in use. I'll be working on it, then get up to go pour myself a cup of coffee or something...then I come back to my computer that has now shut off. It is NOT asleep...it is OFF. So I turn it back on and it is fine. This has happened a few times now within a week. Anyone else have this problem?
By the way, I am now running Lyon, as of August 18th. When the imac shut down, I was usually viewing photos or on the web.
thanks!First thing I would try is to reset the SMC, it can help with power related problems. Shut down the Mac and unplug everything including the power. Press and hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Plug in the computer but be careful not to press the power button as you are plugging it in. Wait a few seconds and turn it on. Hopefully it won't happen again. There is always Apple Support. Don't let the problem persist until your free phone tech support has expired (3 months). I would also recommend using the iMac with an UPS, and at the very least, a high quality surge protector.
If you have MS Word or a similar word processor you could try enabling the autosave feature and set it to 1 minute intervals. Keep a document open and if you come back to the computer and it has shut down, you can look at the last time the document was updated and know what time the comptuer turned itself off. It could be useful in diagnosing the problem. -
Comuter shut down too soon when not in use.
My computer shuts down temporality in just a few minutes when not in use. How can I change the time to a different setting?
Can you please post this type of question over at
http://answers.microsoft.com/? This would be the appropriate location.
Thanks!

My mac powers off when not in use and I must unplug to restart.
My Mac powers of after not being used for a period of time. I must unplug to restart.
All ATVs go into sleep mode when not in use.
Simply pressing the power button on the remote should wake the device up, is that not occurring? -

Should I turn off my Mac Pro when not in use or leave it running?
I have been told I should never turn off my computer by some people, and others say that I should always turn it off when not in use! I use my Mac Pro primarily for music recording/editing in my home studio or word processing. Now that I have an iPad I use that for web browsing, email, FBing, etc. and I find myself on my Mac Pro a lot less. I get the basis behind both trains of thought; those who leave it on feel always stopping and starting up puts unnecessary wear on the moving disks, and those who shut down think if the parts are always moving they are bound to wear out faster. I am not as concerned with conserving power as I am with keeping my machine safe! If you have any information on this topic I would love to hear it. Thanks!
Providing you have a robust firewal and are not worried as a result about being hacked then leave it turned on and allow it to sleep. Make sure you allow the screen to sleep as well a that is the item that is more prone to damage by being left on all the time.
I never turn my machine off, never have with any of my Macs ever since my first one back in 1979-ish and have never suffered any adverse affects. Today, the power drain is so small when allowed to sleep that I doubt they would offend even the ardent 'turn off everything and pull out the plug to save the planet' person.
If you have an iPad or iPod synced with the Mac for email and iCal and address Book etc. then if you leave it on it should be up to date as soon as you return home, mine is anyway. With iCloud coming out very soon that may come into play even more so with all its advance pushing etc. Just a thought.
One advantage in leaving the machine on (sleep) is that you can access it from anywhere in the world should the need arise with the appropriate settings, which you can't if you turn it off.
Leave it on.
