Powering down issue

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP Home on my computer due to a corruption error message that came up as it posted.  The computer works fine but it has begun to restart after the shutdown from Windows.  When I click on "Shut down," it logs me off, saves settings and then shuts off the system, which then restarts after two or three seconds.  Hitting the power button will shut it off, but I don't understand why it's doing this now, since it was never happened before the reinstall.  I already unchecked the "automatic restart" in the Restore folder.  Could it be a BIOS problem, since there have been several updates.  I don't know if the motherboard is even involved here.  I appreciate any advice.

Checkout the properties of your network driver.
There is a setting in there to make the system awake on network-traffic, turn that off and the system should stay off after shutdown.
This is not a BIOS matter but a networkcard setting in Windows.
Something like the picture below.

  • MBP Powering down issue

My MBP has been shutting down recently and I don't seem to be the only one having the problem. Here is what I have noticed.
My laptop is plugged in but it seems to be running off of battery. The charging Icon say that the battery is not charging and I can see that the % of battery is diminishing even tho I have the computer plugged in. When I close my laptop the battery will then charge until I start using it again.
when the battery gets to 17% or less the screen begins to flicker and odd noise accompanies the flicker before shutting down. I than have to wait until the battery charges before I can restart.
I have taken the battery out but the computer will not stay on. I have noticed that when the battery is out and I restart the computer will begin to boot up but as I when the computer finally boots (I see the administrator screen) it Immediately shuts down. It shuts down at the same point.
I have notice that the area where the power adaptor plugs in is getting quite warm and at first I thought it was an overheating problem but I now have a small fan that keeps it cool and it continues to shut down.
Any suggestions are very helpful. I am not very computer wise so please keep answers simple

  • Powering up/down issue

This only happens every so often (about once every two weeks or so) but when I power up the iPad (I power up in the morning and power down overnight), instead of the Apple logo, I get the spinning cogwheel usually displayed when shutting down and then the iPad does, indeed, power down. I have to push the power button again to get the Apple logo and begin the normal power-up sequence.
In observing this behavior, I've noted that when I've powered off the iPad and the cogwheel spins for longer than normal (it usually only turns once or twice before the iPad shuts off), this usually indicates that I will get the "powering down" error on startup. It's almost as if the iPad didn't finish shutting down.
Again, this only happens once every couple of weeks or so - it's by no means chronic - but I was wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior? I'd bring it to the Genius Bar but it happens so infrequently that the odds of it exhibiting this quirk while I'm there is slim to none.
I'm starting to wonder if it could be a misbehaving app...

I haven't had this happen yet, but I can fully understand your annoyance, both at the glitch and the unhelpful responses you've gotten.
Here's what I'd do to troubleshoot:
    1. Reset it, then power down after the reset. See if it happens at that point.
    2. If it does, do a backup and sync on iTunes, check to make sure you have a good backup (go into the Advanced/Devices tab and hover your mouse pointer over most recent backup). Then disconnect, reset, power down and see whether it happens.
    3. If it's not happening in either of the above cases, methodically go through starting up from power off, starting up and then exiting an app you use, then shut down after exiting. If you do this one app at a time, you may eventually find an app that is causing the problem. If you do, report it to Apple.
    4. If none of the above is eliminating the problem, knowing you have a good backup, go through resetting your various settings. Making sure first you have all password and SSID and security protocol written down, start with resetting your network settings. Re-find your wireless connection, re-enter all the relevant info, join your network, and then shut down. See if there's any direct cause and effect there. If not, go further and reset all settings.
    5. If none of that isolates the problem, making sure you have a good backup in iTunes, that you've reliably sync'd all Notes and Contacts and Bookmarks somewhere outside your iPad, and that you've used a camera download utility, be it Aperture, or whatever you use to download photos from your iPad, or that you have a specific photo sync setup in iTunes you can trust, then try Restoring your iPad as new, and test it out without any of your content or changed settings. If it's still doing it at this point, bring it in for Apple to look at. If it seems fine, restore everything from backup, and either you'll be good to go at that point, or will have restored whatever was causing the problem with your backup. At that point at least, you'll know it's not a hardware problem.
If that all seems like too much trouble, you can always just live with it, and maybe some future OS update will fix the problem, or it'll get resolved inadvertently over time by an app update, or you'll just get used to it.
    Hope that helps!

  • Power down issue on a K9N SLI-2F (601-7250-090)

I have a K9N-2F with the serial number 601-7250-090 Kxxxxblablabala
According to the sticky on the powerdown issue it should not be affected.
But since about a month it will power down when I download large files.
It always powers down the first 5-6 times when I switch the computer on.
Then it works, sometimes for hours, sometimes for minutes.
But it always shuts down when I download files from the internet or p2p.
If I disable the LAN-controllers the computer runs just fine, with no powerdowns even on startup.
Do I have this problem as well? I have the latest BIOS. Is there anything I could do or do I have to get MSI to replace it?
    Regardsfrom Sweden.

    Tja mannen
    I have a Amd Athlon64 6000+ (125W)
XION 630W PSU with 21A rails.
2gb Corsair Value Select 5300 DDR
I know the amps is a bit low but the PSU is not the problem... I have managed to narrow it down to the LAN controllers.
If I push my GF8800 grahics card to the limit nothing happens, so it couldn't be the PSU.
But if I start up IE or Firefox and dowload a file or enters a heavy webpage the computer shuts down.
Also it ALWAYS shuts down 5-6 times when I boot up the first time after having the computer turned off over night.'
Then it runs allright for 5 minutes up to a few hours.
If I disable the LAN controllers the computer never shuts down,
When I start up Azerus it shuts down after just a few minutes.
This problem started about a month ago.
It worked just fine for 4 months.
I tried giving the CPU more juice, but that didn't help.
The DDR runs at 1.90v bydefault.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A fails to print until powered down and restarted.

This problem has arisen after about a year of giving good service.  Although it says "Now Printing," it does not print until powered down or disconnected and restarted or reconnected for each print job.  I will be most grateful for any suggestions for fixing this.

    Hi @jmuravchik
Do you have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet or is it in a surge protector or power bar? Even if you have been using a surge protector/power bar all this time and you feel it is not the cause, please connect it to a wall outlet just so we can eliminate the power source as the root cause.   Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector

Driver Check: Checks for missing or corrupt driver files.
Device Manager: Checks for problems in Device Manager that would prevent printing.
Device Online: Checks if the product has been paused or set to offline, and then sets the status back to online if necessary.

Port Match: Checks the port settings for the HP product.
Device Conflicts: Checks for conflicts with other drivers, such as other printer brands.
Ink Issues: Checks the cartridges and ink levels for issues that affect print quality.
Print Settings: Checks and adjusts the print quality settings.

  • Time and date settings change when phone is powered down (not shut off)..

I recently installed the iOS 8 update and immediately noticed that the time and date settings would change when I powered down my iPhone. I did not turn off my phone, only clicked the button to power down or save power. I have tried all the fixes, suggestions, etc., but I am still having issues. In the power down state, I am able to receive phone calls or texts but when I go into my phone, the time and date will be off. It stops from the moment I click the button to power down the phone. Please don't get this confused with turning off the phone completely. This happens when I click the button for power down or power save, however it is described.
So, how do I fix it? Is the app/software for the clock the problem? Is the battery distribution the problem? For some reason, in power down mode, the clock is not receiving constant power in order to keep accurate time. It stops the moment I click the button.  Any suggestions? fixes, etc. I could try. Apple support techs were absolutely no help what-so-ever.

This sounds exactly like what is going on with my phone, http://www.idownloadblog.com/2012/10/19/iphone-5-date-time-glitch/

  • Iphone 5 has started powering down after upgrade to 7.02, help please.

My iPhone 5 started powering down after the 7.02 upgrade I did almost a week ago (3 times).  I realize now that it starts after I see a message notification on the home screen and click on the slider to enter my passcode and reply to the message.
I never get the chance to enter my passcode and the phone turns itself off. The only way I can bring it back is to connect it to my Mac and launch iTunes.  Then it reboots itself and behaves normally for 2 days.
    Any ideas are appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Bluetooth comes on but immediately connects to a powered-down device -- doesn't connect when the device is turned back on.

On my Macbook Pro, whenever I turn Bluetooth on, it immediately connects to a powered-down device.  If I click "Disconnect", nothing happens.

  • Cpu frequency scaling not working and hdd powers down

    Hi,
I recently made a fresh reinstall on my laptop keeping only my user settings (home directory) but no system-wide settings (/etc).
Now I have the following issues:
    1) CPU frequency scaling does not work. KDE's PowerDevil tells me, my CPU does not have scaling capability and when I try to start cpufreq, I get this error message:
    # /etc/rc.d/cpufreq start
:: Setting cpufreq governing rules , cpu 0 1Error setting new values. Common errors: [BUSY] - Do you have proper administration rights? (super-user?)ble_governors: No such file or directory
    - Is the governor you requested available and modprobed?
    - Trying to set an invalid policy?
    - Trying to set a specific frequency, but userspace governor is not available,
for example because of hardware which cannot be set to a specific frequency
or because the userspace governor isn't loaded?
    The governor modules are loaded:
    # lsmod | grep cpufreq
    cpufreq_userspace 2096 0
    cpufreq_powersave 942 0
    cpufreq_ondemand 7990 0
    freq_table 2339 1 cpufreq_ondemand
    cpufreq_conservative 9172 0
This used to work out-of-the box with the previous install so I'm a bit puzzled.
    2) My hard drive powers down after a few seconds of inactivity, just to power up a few seconds later when it's accessed again. The hard drive never powered down on my previous installation. I do not have any power management daemons running and this behavior starts right after booting the machine, before I log in.
I would like to disable this "feature" since I think it's rather bad for the hard drive's health as well as battery life.
    Any ideas?:)
EDIT: Cpu frequency scaling is fixed now, forgot to load the acpi_cpufreq module. There's still the issue with the hard drive, though.

The HDD thing is caused by upowerd, dunno why though.
You can try: hdparm -B 254 <disk device>, but that wont solve the problem permanently, only till you plug and unplug again the AC supply.
you can also try killing upowerd and things will (at least that was the case for me) be alright.
    Maybe this is upowerd bug?

    Hi jactoday,
To try and resolve the issue, you will want to ensure that there are no obstructions in the printer that may be causing the error. To do this, please follow the steps located here.  If you still receive the error, the printer will require servicing.  Please call or email us using one of the methods on the Contact Us page for further assistance.

  • LG TV powers down...cable box shuts off

I just bought an LG Model 42LD520 yesterday. All set up was fine, however, when I shut the TV off, it powers down the cable box and resets it, so essentially, I would need to keep my TV on all the time in order to use the DVR, guide etc.
The TV and box are connected with an HDMI cable. The user manual is useless for this issue.
Am I missing something? This seems like a strange thing.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Do you have it on a surge protector? Many of the newer ones have a master plug and when it is off they all turn off.

  • CS5 and 6 slow down issue - was working fine

    Hi Everyone
Hoping you can help as i've tried pretty much everything I can think of to resolve this. I've been running CS5.5 production premium for a while now, powerful PC, everything was running fast and working great.
Now, all of a sudden Photoshop keeps slowing down to a crawl - im talking massive slow down, the mouse cursor doesnt even move properly. No hardware has changed, and no major software changes, all CS5 is up to date. All my other CS programs (after effects, illustrator etc) are working fine. Tried re-installing CS5, I also installed the PS CS6 trial to see if that works, but it also suffers from the same slow down issue.
So if anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate them! Before I have to do a complete clean install of the whole system.
    Thanks
    Jack

More details on your set-up might be helpful.

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • IMAC Powers Down by itself, When it reboots only the Spot Light visable

    Hi,
Hope someone can help, we have two Imac 20' G5 2ghz with 1.5gb Ram. Both system are crashing with the same problem.
The IMAC Powers Down by itself, and when it reboots only the Spot Light Field is viable, Only way to recover it is to rebuild OS. Sent the System back, and Both Logic board and Hardrive were replaced, and the day system crashed again did they same thing. We also have 2 Imac 20' G5 Isight Models working in the same envioroment and are not experiencing any problems with those systems. Any Ideas?

Sounds to me like you may have bad power supply units. I know of several people who had Rev B machines that were covered by THIS repair program.
Even though it says rev A machines are covered. It seems like some that were made early in the switch still used some of the components that were fingered out as not functioning properly. I would check your serial number.
Either way, give AppleCare a call, you should still be covered. And if you had some things replaced, like you said, let them know its doing same thing. Its for this reason that I have a hunch you are getting those old MBs that were having issues. Its more than the Power supply I sispect. Since you cant run it normally when it does power up, seems to me you may have several issues going wrong at the same time.
    Hope you get it fixed.
