Powerline ethernet connection to garden office

I have used this method successfully within the house to connect a remote computer to the router at the other end of the house. it doesn't seem to matter which power circuit I plug the adaptors into, and it isn't fussy about extension leads etc.
I tried it to the outbuilding, which is on a dedicated fused extension from the consumer unit, and initially it too worked perfectly, although I could see that signal strength was weaker.
However, the signal has now deteriorated and it no longer works.
Presumably adaptors like Netgear etc have different capabilities, so a better quality more powerful unit might work where this has failed, on a marginal connection?
I can see comparisons and reviews based on information speed, but how can I assess the more fundamental point of connectivity and remoteness? Can anyone suggest a product?

The ethernet jack is not active for FioS. What I did is that I went on ebay and bought a second Fios Rourter for $20 and it works great !!!

  • Roaming (ethernet connected base station) and wireless extended network at the same time. Good idea?

I have a Time Capsule (6th gen.) which is my main base station. I also have a number of airport extremes around the house. I only use them in the client mode, i.e. they just join the network so that I can stream audio to devices connected to them.
As I had bad reception in the garden, I installed my old dual-band airport extreme (4th gen) in the garden shed. All Apple articles I read on the topic convinced me that roaming (ethernet connected base station) is much better than wireless extending because you don't lose throughput. As I had no ethernet in the shed, I used two powerline adapters to bring ethernet there and I connected my airport extreme.
Then I had to re-install all the airport expresses (as I had also changed the name of the network) and I noticed that the default option of the Airport utility is to make them extend the network wirelessly instead of just joining to it. I did not do it, but I am wondering. Is it a good idea? As they are in different rooms than the Time Capsule, of course the network there is not as strong as close to the Time Capsule. I still get "good enough" connection, but I will I have an improvement if I allow every Airport Express to extend the network as well? Or will I have problems with the throughput. My idea is not to do it and keep the net as simple as possible, i.e just extend it with roaming in the garden where I really need it and let the airport expresses in client mode.

As usual AirPort Utility is trying to be clever. It is proposing what Apple thinks most people will want to do with it, and most of the time it succeeds.
Having the Expresses "wirelessly extend" the Time Capsule's wireless network will increase your wireless network service area and should not introduce new problems. If that is not what you want to do though, you can certainly return to AirPort Utility and select "join a wireless network". It is a simpler configuration, and simpler is better for home wireless networks.
Wireless > Network Mode > Join a wireless network.

  • How do I use my ethernet connection for printing on my LAN and use my Wifi on a different router and ISP to connect to the internet?

I'm in a small office, and I have to use my ethernet connection to connect to the networked copier to be able to print, but connection to which I hooked my Time Capsule is literally 20x faster when connecting to the internet.
How can I tell the computer to use the ethernet connection to print, while everything else should go through wifi?
I have been manually going back and forth changing the order in Network Preferences between ethernet and Wifi, but I'm know there must be an easier way.  Thanks for your help!

A packet going to Apple is not local. It is going to 17.149.160.49  -- So it is sent to the topmost working connection to be Routed and sent to the Internet.
A packet going to a local computer or other device that is on the same subnet (has an IP address very close to the topmost IP Address of your computer) gets sent out that port as well, but is sent directly to that computer on the local subnet, since no Routing [changing of Addresses} is needed.
A packet going to a local computer or Printer or Network Attached Storage device that is not on the topmost subnet, but is on a secondary subnet such as the second network connection would be sent directly to that computer, since no Routing is needed.
I do not understand why two Routers have the same IP Address if they are not cross-connected. That makes everything very difficult when it should be simple.

  • I lost the lan ethernet connection of an older windows 7 pc to my 3 Terabyte router when adding a new local printer to the pc. How do i set this up again so the PC is recognized and can get to the internet again through the time capsule?

I recently added a new printer to a 2005 vintage PC that is running windows 7. It used to go through a router in my wifes upstairs office to the time capsule by wired ethernet (cat5) but when I added her new local printer thought I would network it, big mistaked, lost all my ethernet connection and she cannot get to the internet. Wireless not an option. How do i set up again the ethernet connection and i will only USB the printer locally this time for the windows pc?
Tried windows diagnostics, and besides telling me to reset everything and turn router off and on etc. I am in an endless loop.
Other Mac products are not impacted by this issue.

I see no direct connection.. a printer and the computer setup for internet are not related.
But it sounds like the router in the wife's office is now in the wrong mode..
If you have an existing main router replace the second router for a switch .. that is the easy way.
Otherwise you need to bridge the router if it has that option.. most do not. Or use wan bypass.. where you turn off the dhcp server in the router and fix its ip to match the range of the main router.. this is the hassle of using router as a switch.
BUT I am making a huge number of assumptions.
What I need is the full network layout.. a quick picture would help.
I need main modem.. main router.. (maybe same box or different).. make model and current IP address and how dhcp is setup.
I need secondary router.. if that is what it is, IP and settings.
I want the printer type and model. How it is connected.
BTW I much prefer to see a network printer plugged into the network rather than usb.. it is only a matter of sorting the IP settings and driver pointing to the network rather than local.
Or you should think of it as a broken washing machine and call the technician.. who could fix the whole lot in an hour.

  • Not picking up ethernet connection

    Hi,
I am using a WRT54GS. its and old one about 1 years old was working with my SBC Yahoo SpeedStream DSL modem well.
recently I switched to Cable. Now the CAT5 (rj45)  that comes out from the cable modem works well with my HP n6120 office laptop picks up the Ethernet connection well and I am getting the wired connection with no problem.
however WRT54GS not picking up the ethernet. internet light is just blinking. as if its pooling but not finding any network. same thing happening if I try to setup it up as a HUB or access point.
Is there any setup I can change in the router? to make it work.
I dont understand how come the wired connection working with the laptop and not with WRT54GS. this is a good working model not too much used also.

Yes I tried with the cable comes with the router and then with another one that is hand made. Wired but someone told me that the ISP is running a 24online client at their end. if true, it probably is tracking my MAC address. Even if that is true, I clone the mac address, that should hv been worked.
next why the internet light goes off and on at the router, as if its not finding any internet. where as if connected to the PC it just works good.  could there be any other wireing issue.

  • BT Infinity and Zyxel Powerline Adapters - connect...

    Hi,
I recently upgraded the Infinity and also moved house. So now I have the HH3 with BT Infinity. I use Zyxel Powerline adapters, but struggling to get a connection.
I'm using the following to connect to the HH3 http://www.zyxel.com/uk/en/products_services/pla4225.shtml?t=p and connecting through the Giga or Ethernet inputs on the back of the HH3 but when I try to connect my PC/Laptop to the Powerline adapter in my bedroom it cannot find the network.
Any thoughts? Should I be connecting the Powerline Adapter to the HH3 or the white router BT supply? Do I need to configure something when setting up the Ethernet connection with my PC? I'm using my BT account credentials [email protected] and password but it's not connecting.
    Any inspiration/experimentation welcomed.
    Thanks.

Should I be connecting the Powerline Adapter to the HH3 or the white router BT supply?
Do I need to configure something when setting up the Ethernet connection with my PC? I'm using my BT account credentials [email protected] and password but it's not connecting.
Normally, connect one powerline to the HomeHub and the other to the PC.  If the PC has been set up in the standard way, it will then get a local ip address by DHCP from the HomeHub.  You might go to your PC ethernet adaptor settings and make sure they are set up for 'dhcp' and 'get DNS setttings automatically'.   You won't need to enter any credentials in the PC for this method.  You shouldn't go near the 'connect to the internet' dialog; it should just work automatically.
If you only want to connect a single PC, you could connect the first powerline to the white modem and leave out the HH3 completely.  You would then need to put credentials into the PC: the normal thing there is to enter user '[email protected]', and the password doesn't matter.  That goes into a 'connect to the internet' dialog.
Make sure the 'internet' or whatever lights are blinking on both powerlines, otherwise there is a problem with those, or  the bedroom ring is not connected closely enough to the other ring.  Unlikely, I had a perfectly good connection through different rings and different fuse boxes on different floors with similar zyxel powerline (only single ethernet ones); at least until one stopped working altogether.

  • I bought an airport extreme (5th gen) and have set it up today. However I am having troubles getting it to co-excist with my already set up ethernet connections which are necessary due to the size of the house.

Please let me know how I can set it up so it works along with my ethernet cables and downstairs network. I have several ethernet connections that I need to use as they are out of range of the network.

When trying to connect my AppleTV 3rd gen to another ethernet port of airport extreme with another faster (85mbps) Trendnet ethernet adapter via a different electrical outlet, my extreme goes from green light to flashing amber light and my wifi stops working.
If the Apple TV was originally setup for WiFi, I suggest that you reset the device back to default settings and then configure it again with Ethernet plugged in. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Settings
As a test,  connect a spare Ethernet cable of any length (that you know is working) from the LAN <-> port on the AirPort Extreme to the Apple TV for the setup.
Setup the ATV again and double check to make sure that it is operating correctly
Change the location of the ATV back to the desired location on the network behind the powerline adapters
If you have a problem now, the first thing to check is the powerline adapter and or wiring

  • Powerline ethernet

So basically I have a powerline ethernet adaptor plugged into a socket near my computer and have a ethernet going from my computer to the adapter. I also have a adaptor downstairs plugged into a range extender to boost the signal around the house. Lastly I have my router in the loft plugged into a adaptor aswell.
When I hover my mouse over the ethernet symbol in the windows toolbar, it says "FireboxN" internet access. That is the name of the extender we have downstairs, but does that mean my adaptor is pairing with the adaptor downstairs and not the my router's adaptor in the loft, as that's what I need it to be connected to? Or does it not matter and it will be receiving the signal from the router anyway through the wiring?

You look at the lights on the front of the adaptor, then look in the instruction manual to see what they mean.  If an adaptor isn't paired, I would expect some lights to be showing different to indicate there's a problem.
Powerline adaptors are normally supplied as a matched pair.  If you get a third one, you then need to pair it with the existing master one to make sure they can communicate.  This usually involves some magic sequence of pressing buttons, and should also be explained in the instruction manual.
I realise that's all a bit vague, but every brand seems to work differently.

  • Ethernet connections YouView and tv

I've replaced a 5 year old Bravia tv with a new 42"; the old Tv didn't have an ethernet connection but my YouView box was connected by a Powerline adapter. The new Tv has an ethernet connection, but how do I handle that connection and the one on the YouView box-do they somehow interconnect or do I need another Powerline?

    Hi there,
All you would need is a Ethernet hub behind the back of your TV, similar to when people used to have one USB port you could plug in a 4 way adapter and plug other usb devices into it.
You can pick up a Ethernet hub pretty cheaply, all you do is plug the cable from the powerline to the ethernet hub and plug another cable from the youview box and another cable from TV to ethernet hub.  You can enjoy internet access on both tv and youview.
    hope this helps!

  • Home Hub 3 Losing Powerline Adaptor Connection

    Hello All,
First off, apologies if this question has been posted and/or answered elsewhere but I couldn't find any posts that duplicate my situation.
I have BT Infinity with a Home Hub 3 (installed in July last year) and all seems to be well except for the ability of the Home Hub to keep ethernet connections alive.
    My setup;
1x HH3 in the study, connected to the Internet as per usual & performing DHCP duties with a gigabit switch to connect all the 'local' hardware.
1x Comtrend 9020 Powerline adaptor pair to connect the apple TV in the lounge.
    The problem;
The powerline adaptors - which I only chose after seeing that they were the same kind installed by BT Vision engineers, so they must be considered compatible with the HH3, right? - seem to keep 'dropping off' my network. Originally, I had them using DHCP addresses because I figured that the BT Vision customers wouldn't be doing any additional configuration but that didn't work so I guessed that there must be something that the BT Vision box does to keep the connection alive.
Now I have tried switching to fixed IP addresses but that also seems to be a dead end because they still drop off the connected devices list on the HH3.
It would appear to be the connection between the HH3 and the Powerline adaptors which is being dropped because when this happens I am unable to login to the powerline config interface (browser based) and pings are not responded to.
If I want to stream content to the Apple TV I now have to resort to resetting the HH3, the powerline adaptors and the Apple TV, which kind of defeats the convenience factor a little (plus it would be far too technical to explain to my wife). BTW - the full reset process was arrived at after trying different combinations of resetting the 3 components in the chain with no success.
    Any ideas?

You must use fixed IP addresses outside of the home hubs DHCP range, otherwise you will have the same problem
    See Static IP
I think you can do that for the Powerline adapters as well.
Login to the Powerline web interface, password is BT, I think there is a setting to use a static address. You will need to use a different address for the other Powerline adapter.

I have Airport Extreme as the base unit and an Express unit in a room separated by a brick wall to improve signal. Express shows a green light indicating signal but my iPad does not perform well. How can I improve other than hardwire ethernet connection?

Other suggestions, and more info about the nature of the problem, may be in this Apple tech note.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365
For example, you might find that the brick wall is not the only problem. There may be other devices pumping out enough wireless interference to be making things even worse.
I agree with Bob Timmons that Ethernet is best and most reliable. And that powerline (which I use) is easier and potentially faster than wireless...but only if your power lines do not have electrical devices plugged in which produce electrical noise on the line. Powerline will be slower than Gigabit Ethernet.
Ethernet cable is the only way to ensure that the signal goes directly there in a shielded way for a clear fast signal. Wireless and powerline are much slower because of all the other things the signal has to fight past to get to the other device.

  • MSI MEGA ePOWER 85 HOMEPLUG POWERLINE ETHERNET BRI...

Hi there Support, I've a HH5, no probs whatsoever via wireless, ethernet and dongle. Now I bought one of the Homeplugs in Title OP, and am getting nowhere. supposed to just plug and play, Network Manager ( win8.1) reports as "unidentified Network" Fist thing I need to know really is if BT is in any way blocking this ethernet bridge as vendor told me "I know that it works with Solwise. I also know they don't work with Devolo" Hmmn? Where to start, got a green light on LINK/ACT, cable fine, see enclosed pic of Network The working one is my dongle, its the ethernet underneath  that i need to get working?
can provide HUB info etc, I was hoping, the electric socket + cable would pick up the BT Home Network
I have where I use it for TV, laptop and gaming PC ..

Where do the powerline adapters come into it?
You can only have one powerline adapter connected to the home hub, that becomes the master or AP. Any others have to be slaved to that master one.
Connecting more than one poweline adapter to the home hub will cause an conflict, and result in one of the ports being locked out.

  • Macbook Pro remote desktop unable to connect to my office PC. Genius Bar told me the only solution was to wipe my Mac. Really??

I work remotely using my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.5.8) to connect to my office PC. I have always had issues using my "computer name" with the RDC but have no problem when using the IP address. Two weeks ago my company upgraded their server and ever since I have been unable to access the server. My coworkers (who use Macs) are not having the same problems as me. My IT guy was able to connect using my Mac, his security clearance and IP address. However, I no longer have the option of using the IP address to log in - per my IT guy. My IT guy is a PC guy so he suggested that I take my computer to Apple to see whats blocking me.
I met with Apple support at the Genius bar yesterday and was told basically it could be a problem with my computer and I needed to wipe it clean and start over. This was the proposed solution to the problem but the Mac guy I spoke with didn't seem completely sure this would solve / is the cause of the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions for figuring out what the root problem is prior to me wiping my Mac? Has anyone had issues working with remote desktop connection from their Mac connecting to a PC?
    I appreciate any help possible!

Also, try connecting the iPod via a different USB port.
You may want to try putting the iPod in Disk Mode prior to connecting it and see if you are able to restore it (while it is in Disk Mode)...

  • How do I use my iBook with a hotel's ethernet connection?

When a hotel just has an ethernet connection, I can never come up with the right configuration to access it. Does anyone have the procedure?

    Plug in the ethernet.
    (Turn on/log in your iBook)
    Open browser
    Go to a website.
    It should now load.
If for some reason the obvious is not working, do this.
    Open System preferences.
    Click Network
Now at the top pull down the menu and select network status.
There should now be a line that says ethernet.
In that line it should say "connected, your IP address is x." If it does not say that it is connected, what does the error say?
