I have a Macbook Pro Dual Core 2.0 GHZ that currently has 1 GB of RAM in it. For the most part it runs fine, but I do come into problems with it sometimes while I'm doing video editing which is my main usage for my computer. I currently run Final Cut Studio 2. Would it be worth it to sell this computer and get a Powermac G5 Dual Core 2.0 GHZ or 2.3 GHZ and upgrade the RAM to 8 GB to help my video editing run smoother? The reason why I am considering this is because I would like a computer that would work better with my video editing at a cost that I can afford. I also would like to have a firewire 800 port for my external hard drives. I rarely use my internal hard drive, so that is no factor in my decision. Currently I cannot afford a new Mac Pro, but will be buying one in about a year. I'm just trying to decide if this would be a good switch for right now. Thanks for your help.

Although I don't own a Mac Pro, rumor has it that they run video chores significantly more efficiently than do the last generation G5's. I bought my 2.3 GHz, w/the 7800 card, for $600, last November on eBay. The case wasn't cosmetically perfect (a rather nasty looking crimp on the front handle) but it has performed well running my video (EyeTV and recording) and academic (I teach math & Mathematica) needs. I picked-up extra memory (it now has 6 Gigs) pretty cheap (around $75, IIRC), from Kingston. I also took the advice of many here and got a WD 640GB HD that made a significant difference in both boot-time and opening applications. However, if you're going to get a new Mac Pro in a year, it's almost like throwing money away - the G5 will probably have its' depreciation rate decrease once the software vendors no longer continue supporting pre-Intel machines. That being said, my G5 is more than sufficient handling my present version of Mathematica - I don't think that paying $3000, or whatever it takes to get a new Mac Pro, would balance the marginal increase of utility I would get using Mathematica. If I were a video guru, I might feel differently. I thought I could give you a definitive yes, buy the G5, because I really love mine. Unless something happens, I plan on having it for at least a few years. At about $250/year, if one figures that I'll have owned it for a total of 3 years, that's less than 70¢/day. But I also value the opinions of many of the posters who have commented on the new machine's speed, compared to the 2.5 GHz Quad, say.

Flash 8 Pro freezes on Mac G5, dual 2,5 GHz

Ever since I upgraded from Flash MX 2004 Professional to
Flash Professional 8 on my PowerMac G5 it doesn't run. All I can do
is
open the software but as soon as I click on a menu or a
button, whatever, like changing the size it freezes instantly. I've
searched the forum and every possible place to find any answer that
can solve my problem but it seems like I'm alone with this, I can't
find any information anywhere. I've even tried to un-install and
re-install Flash again but same problem still occur - freezing. Has
anyone had the same problem on a Mac G5 with dual 2,5 GHz
processors, in that case – what did you do to solve the
problem? I'm out of ideas and can't figure out more.

I also have to add: I can't even click on Preferences in
Flash, nothing. It freezes instantly. It run as long as I don't
touch ANY button or menu in Flash, as soon as I do anything, touch
a menu or button Flash freeze.
Anyone know what to do? Or shall I throw it out and install
an earlier version like MX 2004 Professional, that version of Flash
worked. Please, please, please... Help.

Urgent! PowerMac G5 Smells Like It's Burning; Red Warning Light!

I have a paper due today, and the only copies of it are on a PowerMac G5 (Early 2005, 2.0 GHz, OS X 10.4.11) and a USB flash drive that I can't use with any of our Windows laptops.

I was using the PowerMac G5 last night, and I noticed a sudden, sharp burning smell. It smelled like someone had left an iron sitting too long on a shirt. Upon further investigation, it seemed to be coming from the rear fan vents (which were roaring much louder than usual; I believe this is called "hyperdrive"), so I put the Mac in sleep mode and took the side panel and air deflector off to see what was causing it. The smell left pretty quickly, so I couldn't really tell where it came from inside the computer, but I did notice a bright red warning light beside the RAM (behind the front power button; inside the #4 area in this diagram):

I immediately did some digging around on the internet, and found this forum discussion:

While it seems that this should fix the light, (A) I couldn't really see the sensor described, even with a flashlight, (B) the Air Reflector Sensor Board sticker thing seems to still be in place on the plastic Air Reflector tab, and (C) I can't see how the sensor's not working would cause the computer to smell like it's burning!
I also skim-read a couple other things and got the impression (from the first link below) that this model has had pretty serious issues with the power supply unit in general. Considering it's practically ten years old, it may be unusual that the computer hasn't had this problem sooner!

Does this seem to be a power supply issue? Is there a way to solve both the red light/fan hyperdrive issue AND the burning smell problem?
If I don't get this fixed in time, I may be able to go to the library tomorrow and get the project off of the USB drive using an iMac... But it will be late.

PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1.42 not recognizing hard drives

I have a PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1.42 GHz, and I just moved across country, and it was working before the move, now it won't start up. It goes right to a grey screen with a blinking question mark and finder icon. I have 2 hard drives in it. One with Leopard, and the other with Tiger, and it won't recognize either. I reset the PRAM, I checked all the connections inside, started it up holding the option key and it doesn't show either hard drive. I also started it up with the Leopard install disc and using Disk Utility it still couldn't find the drives! Next thing I am going to try is resetting the PMU and see if that works...otherwise both hard drives went bad or possibly the cable for both of them went bad??

When you checked the cable connections, did you check both ends of all cables? For example, if the moving loosened the ATA cable at the logicboard/controller end, checking the drives' connectors won't reveal much.
Do the drives spin up when you power the machine on (you may need to open the side panel and gently touch the drives while booting to test this)? If not, suspect a power cable connection issue. If they do, suspect an ATA cable connection issue.
Best way to confirm a cable connection is sound is to undo it and redo it - they can look okay when they are not okay. Do this with the machine shut down, of course.

PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8GHz Booting Up Problem, HELP!

How Much RAM do you have, can you pull 2 stick & try it?
See if you can Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.

PowerMac G5 early2005 Max Total hard drive Gb = ???

Is it possible to install more than 1 Tb of hard drive into a PowerMac G5 , early 2005, dual 2 gHz. Right now the information I have says that I can only install two 500 Gb drives. I don't know if I can install a one 1 Tb drive or install two 1 Tb drives in each bay.

Properly jumpered for SATA-1 compatibility, 2TB drives are no problem. 3TB drives with GUID partition maps should work fine for data, though if you wish to boot from one, you will need to format it with an Apple Partition Map (APM) scheme and partition it so that no partition is greater than about 2.2 TB. I have two 2TB Hitachis (no jumpers needed) in this G5 machine (first generation) right now.

MBP vs. PowerMac G5

Hello everyone,
I'm thinking about replacing my PowerMac G5 (dual 2.7 GHz) with a MacBook Pro. Right now I am splitting my computer usage between the PowerMac and my PowerBook 1.33 GHz. I'd like to consolidate. I'm trying to get a sense of what (if anything) might be a disadvantage to this. In theory, it looks like the MBP should be pretty well faster than the PM in everything. What about matters like disk i/o, however?
Also, for anyone who has made this transition, is there a good way to handle iPhoto (or maybe Aperture) with the much smaller drives in a laptop? I have nearly 200 GB of photos, mostly Raw files, in iPhoto. If the biggest drive a MBP comes with is a 320 GB drive, I'm going to have to come up with a new method of storage...

Hi Tim,
It is difficult to say whether the MBP will actually be faster than the PMG5. If you have a look HERE I've selected a comparison between a Dual 2.7Ghz G5 and a new MBP. The G5 comes out with an overall higher score, though not by much.
I would definitely not think of the MBP as a downgrade in performance, but I'm not sure its a substantial upgrade as well.
In terms of IO, the PMG5 will probably be faster with internal drives in a RAID configuration. You can do this externally with the MBP, but I don't think it will be quite as fast. However, if you really need drive speed you could upgrade to a SSD drive in the MBP, though the maximum is only 256GB right now.

What is the best graphics card for my Powermac G5

I am thinking about upgrading my Graphics card. Currently I have a radeon 9600 in My powermac G5 (early 2005 2.3 ghz dual), it works fine but its a bit slow and drops frames on anything HD. I have been looking around and the best card that i will not need to flash/format to work would probably be a NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL (I really dont want to have to flash the card as it seems like a slightly complicated process and i would like to keep within all the manufacturers warranties).My main goal is to obtain the best card possible for HD video editing or viewing. I was wondering if there where any superior cards available for my mac that would serve those purposes better.

The performance differences vary by software in use.
Some software runs better with a Geforce, other with a Radeon.
The Radeon cards will do better with games, but the Geforce will likely do better with 3D and pro apps.

As far as viewing HD, any one of the cards will give additional horsepower.
I use a Geforce 6800 GT and a Radeon X800 and I don't see any difference between the two with regard to handling video.
Of course, the two cards do much better than the Radeon 9800 series or other offerings OEM.
After that, it's all up to the CPU, free space on the boot drive and RAM.
Oh, yes, one other benefit of the Geforce is two DVI ports.
The OEM Radeon cards each have one ADC, one DVI.

Powermac G5 - worried about logic board

Hey everyone. I've been having a log of trouble with my RAM of late, and I'm beginning to worry that my logic board may be kaput, but I don't want to jump to conclusions. Sadly my applecare is expired so I can't call the experts.
Here's the exact rundown: I have a Powermac G5 dual processor 2.7 ghz. I had added 2 gigs of RAM when I first bought the computer a few years back. Made sure to check that the RAM was well certified and bought a warranty for it.
After working fine for 2 years, the other week my computer wouldn't boot past the white screen with the apple logo. When it was time to log in, the screen wouldn't come up. I was able to boot it in safe mode a couple of times, but eventually, it simply wouldn't do it's thing. Eventually I got a graphical error where the apple logo was.
I removed the extra RAM I had purchased, and, whammo, the computer booted normally again. PHEW.
Then I had a busy week and couldn't turn the computer back on. I wanted to test the 2 gigs of RAM I had removed in another slot, plus some RAM my roommate had acquired for me. So today I put her ram in the sucker, fired up the computer, and while it boot properly, it gave me a few graphical errors and after about 30 seconds froze. I had to manually power down the computer, and in booting it back up, I couldn't get the user login screen. Just a blank blue screen.
I removed my roommate's RAM and left it with just the original mac RAM in there, but it still wouldn't boot. I tried replacing that RAM with her RAM, and again, no boot. Etc.
There's nothing wrong with my power supply - the light comes on, the USB devices are powered, etc. But after the white screen with the apple logo, it goes black. The fan is not going wild (although a week ago, before I originally removed any RAM, the fan would go ballistic after about half a minute).
I find it hard to believe that ALL this RAM would have failed. Could this be a logic board problem?

My guess is that the RAM supplied by the roommate wasn't even close to being compatible. That could have fried something.

It is a leap of faith to presume nothing is wrong with the power supply. Said supply produces several different voltages, so the fact that the drives spin up does not necessarily indicate good health.
Now may be a good time for an SMU reset: How to reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or Power Mac G5 (Late 2005
Make sure to disconnect everything except keyboard, monitor and mouse when troubleshooting.

IMovie HD won't import from Sony HDR-HC1

iMovie HD 5.0.2 (111) on my G5 desktop controls, but won't import from, my new little Sony HDR-HC1 1080i DV camcorder. Same was the case with my 12" 1 GHz PowerBook until, at the advice of a Manhattan Beach Genius Bar tech, I did an archive reinstall of 10.4 and a reinstall of iMovie HD on both my G5 PowerMac and G4 PowerBook and then downloaded all the updates. Now my PowerBook works, but my PowerMac still won't import. On an empty second HD in my PowerMac I installed OS 10.4 and iMovie HD ONLY (to create as sterile as possible of an environment), made the 2nd HD my startup drive, and still iMovie HD on my PowerMac will not import from this camera (although it will from an older Sony VX-1000 regular def camcorder).
Does anybody have any solutions, or any idea why iMovie HD now imports on my PowerBook but after the same makeover still won't on my PowerMac?
Per earlier posts, I tried playing some piano notes in Garage Band, trashing the iMovie preference files, and reinstalling QuickTime (the tech had heard QT 7.0.3 could be at fault from becoming corrupted in certain updating combinations), all to no avail.

PowerMac G5 2 x 2.67 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I have had import/capture problems using FW drives with FCE/iMovie5 and my 2gig iMac. My canon GL2 works fine but only when no other FW devices are connected to the FW port I use the computers internal drive to capture. If your using the G5's internal SATA drives this (below) may not apply.

Create a Playlist from external folder with tracks already existing in iTunes

I was just wondering if its possible to create a playlist from an external folder (on my desktop) with tracks that already exist in iTunes.
I basically have a folder on my desktop that i use with Serato, i was wondering if it'd be possible to sort a playlist in iTunes with the tracklist from the folder? I already have all the tracks on iTunes so i don't want to add them onto iTunes again just to put them into a playlist as i'd have to sort through all the duplicates to delete the non playlisted tracks (theres around 1500 so it wouldn't be a quick task).
Would be much appreciated if anybody can help!

This script need Spotlight metadata, all files in the folder that you use with Serato should be indexed.
Works well if the tags (name and artist) are defined
In this script :
it will display a dialog to select your folder
iTunes search track from the library playlist according to (artist, album and title in the Spotlight metadata of each file).
If iTunes found a track, iTunes will add this track to the new playlist.
The script takes 35 seconds for 1000 files on an old machine (PowerMac G5 2 X 1.8 GHz) .
This should take less than 100 seconds for 3500 files on the new machine

10.4.8 Tiger-Wake From Sleep Kernel Panics

I've seen many discussions abound kernel panics and wake-from-sleep issues, but nothing exactly like mine.
Most importantly, mine is a desktop Mac-PowerMac G4, 2 proc, 1.25 GHz.
We are experiencing persistent kernel panic and system crash problems, all of which happen when we try to bring the machine back up from sleep by tapping the keyboard and/or clicking the mouse.
The system responses have included:
• Hard drive and fan spinning up, but no mounting of any USB device (the ZIP 250 drive doesn't whir and the Studio Display remains dark
• Machine wakes up but the display has what can only be described as "pieces" missing from it. Then the kernel panic display happens.
• Mouse pointer moves but activates and affects nothing.
The very last kernel panic was intriguing. The machine woke up and appeared to be fine for a moment but there was the problem when 'chunks' were missing from the display image. Firefox, which had been running when the Mac went to sleep, crashed with no error message-it simply disappeared. Then the kernel panic screen happened. The report generated at restart was thus:

While I do have 1GB onboard memory it probably ought to be said that 512MB worth is a memory stick from Crucial that I installed about a week and a half before upgrading from 10.3.9 to 10.4.6. I doubt it's the memory's fault in as much as that period of time was more than enough for the problem to crop up and it ran with no complaints whatsoever until I upgraded to Tiger.
I have also tried removing the ZIP 250 from the system; I have Adobe Version Cue CS2 running and had that turned off; various tips and tricks I found about too numerous to recount. So far the problem is proving intractable.
Does anyone have any idea of what I ought to try next?

I recommend having both Alsoft DiskWarrior 3.0.3+ (DW3) and Micromat TechTool Pro version 4.1.x+ (TTP4).
While both can build a new, optimized directory for a disk, I have found there are some disks that only DW3 can repair. DW3 is a "specialist" in disk directories.
Likewise, TTP4 brings a host of useful hardware testing routines that are neither in DW3 nor the Apple Hardware Test. TTP4 also includes an excellent disk defragmenter. Defragmenting is generally not required under Mac OS X 10.3 or later unless you perform an extensive amount of video editing or your disk is nearing full, in which case it can be useful. See Mac OS X: About Disk Optimization. TTP4's Surface Scan is also useful in determining if a disk has developed bad sectors.
If you own neither utility today, the initial investment may seem like a good deal of money, but compared to your data and your time, the cost of these utilities is insignificant in the the long run. I've found their upgrades to be reasonably priced for what they do.
Neither utility is a substitute for a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution. But I've seen DW3 save more than one person's bacon and the suite of hardware tests and additional functions TTP4 bring to the table make both a worthwhile investment.
If you can only purchase one now, make it DW3. Add TTP4 when funds permit.
Better to have the tools and not need them, than to need them and not have them.
A good mechanic has more than one kind of wrench in their toolbox.
In some ways, you're lucky to have a PowerPC-based Mac: DW3 is not yet available for Intel-based Macs.

Display anomalies using iPhoto 6 on a PowerBook

I'm using iPhoto 6 on my PowerMac G5 and a 1.5 ghz G4 PowerBook. Photos are imported as RAW files from a Canon PowerShot camera. I have no problems working on my PowerMac, but the laptop, after displaying a full size image for about five seconds, will change the image strangely, adding contrast and color noise spots in dark areas. If I then zoom in, the enlarged photo displays correctly. As soon as I zoom out to the whole image, though, the problem recurs. Basically, it looks like a low quality GIF image. I can't find anything in the preference menu that addresses this, and I don't really know much about working with RAW to know if I'm doing something wrong when importing. I apologize if this has been addressed before (I couldn't find anything) and I'd appreciate any advice anyone has to give.

Thanks for the links. I don't know if embedding ColorSync profiles in my RAW imports is causing the problem, but just in case I unchecked the ColorSync profile box and tried reprocessing an image I had already imported, with no luck. I'll look into my profile setup, which I haven't given much thought.
In the interest of providing as much info as possible, I should add that the artifacts also appear while I'm moving around the image with the scroll bar, then disappear when I stop (unless the image is at full size). The transient nature of the problem makes me think something other than a profile goof-up might be involved.
