Powermac 6100/66 Monitor Woes

I need some serious help. Ok I got the HDI-45 to the standard apple 15 Pin connector then i got a dip switch Apple to VGA adapter. Well the vertical sync is fine at 60.0 HZ,but the horizontal sync is out of range of my monitor. My monitor supports from 31.7 KHZ to 70.0 KHZ Horizontal sync, but when i plug in all the adapters its out of range and says 24.5 KHZ /60.0 HZ . Ive tried all the switches on my dip switch adapter and all they do is change the vertical sync. Can anyone tell me a really good adapter i can use to see my old Macintosh on a VGA Monitor? Thanks

Is that the way it starts up, or is that the way it ends up after the Interlocking faces are drawn and the parade of Icons starts?
The way it starts up should depend on the value read from the adapter. The way it ends up when the system is in and running depends on the Monitor Preferences file, which could be set to an old value.
There are several ways to intervene to try to get different answers.
Reset The PRAM. This removes pre-conceived notions saved in Parameter RAM.
Boot from a CD. This avoids reading the (possibly wrong) setting in your Monitors Preference file on the Hard Drive. If the screen clears, it may give you the opportunity to find the Preference file (in the Preferences folder inside the Hard Drive's System Folder) and move it to another location, de-activating it. A new one will be created when you go back to the Hard drive System and use Monitors or Monitors and Sound to set the resolution anew.
One more thing to try--those tiny switches are not rugged. Sometimes they do not throw completely on the first try. Try turning them off again and moving them briskly into the ON position once again.

  • PowerMac 6100/66 dos drive containers; mount in OSX?

Am trying to open dos drive containers created on 6100 DOS Compatible using Compatability software v. 1.0.3. Copied the containers to my G4, clicked on one which launched Classeic. Prompted me and said it could not "mount the drive" because PC Eschange 2.0 was not installed in my Control Panels folder. No problem; copied that file to the Control Panels folder, rebooted, clicked the container again, Classic launched, then no prompt, but I couldn't see the icon for the container on the desktop. Clicked the container again, and I got a message telling me it was already mounted on the desktop. Didn't see it, couldn't find it. What's happening and how can a migrate data from this container for archiving purposes?

  • New Monitor Woes

    Hey all
So we lost power this weekend and I had to haul my editing rig (a 1,1 Mac Pro, ATI 5770... yeah, it's a little long in the tooth but dang thing keeps on working!) out to a friends house so I could keep working. I figured it would be easier to just buy a new monitor (and I've been planning on doing that for awhile) than disassemble my old monitors and haul them.
So I found this guy on sale at Best Buy: Samsung - C750 Series 27" LED HD Monitor (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung---C750-Series-27%26%2334%3B-LED-HD-Monitor/8 585136.p?id=1218879338068&skuId=8585136)
    Basic details are thus:
    3000:1 contrast ratio
    300 cd/m² brightness
Displays up to 16.7 million colors
    1920 x 1080 resolution
Digital (2 HDMI) and standard analog VGA inputs
And I plugged it into my ATI Radeon HD 5770 using a DVI to HDMI cable and I mean, the thing is just stunning to behold. Bright and beautiful.
So here's why I'm here posting: It's at it's highest setting (full 1080) and I'm noticing that while most stuff looks really great text is not very smooth. I've exhaustively gone through the settings to see if I'm missing something but now that I'm back on my Macbook Pro here at work I can really see the difference (and it's not a Retina screen). I can take some screen shot comparisons when I get home. Granted this is how it was on my older monitors but I figured it was because they were several years old and had a lower resolution. Is it a graphics card thing? Can the ATI not render text as well as the NVIDIA in my  2009 MacBook Pro? I'm running Lion FWIW.
So am I missing something here? Anyone have any ideas? I have 15 days to take this thing back and while I could live with the less than perfect text I figure if I'm going to plunk down several hundred bucks for this I should make sure this is the best I can do. Anyone with ideas or thoughts, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

27" and you need dual link on DVI side or the MDP but realize that a true 27" is much higher resolution than your LCD HDMT "Monitor" Display was.I find the 23-24" inch is fine on HP but larger and I have to move my head and look around just that much more.

  • Split Monitor Woes

    Hello all.
I've got a slight problem here.
I recently picked up a Wacom 20WSX Cintiq for my Mac Pro setup (which already has a 23" Cinema). Originally the Cintiq was to pair up with the Cinema, right beside each other, but this doesn't work as the Cintiq requires a large amount of space when being adjusted in rotation and tilt.
So I split the Cintiq off into it's own "workstation", apart from the Cinema with it's own bluetooth keyboard. Everything is fine and working.
Except for the fundamental fact that the OS X menu bar is still on the primary Cinema display.
Anything like Illustrator or Photoshop is pretty much rendered useless because of this. Sure, I can move the windows over to the Cintiq, but anything menu related requires me moving over to the Cinema, grabbing the mouse, and doing whatever it is I need to do.
I'm aware of the fact that I can move the Menu & Dock to the Cintiq, but this is a lame solution for a stupid problem, and it messes up the rest of my desktop(s).
Is there any way to truly run the monitors as a "split" setup? Ie, both monitors have a menu bar (the dock can stay on my Cinema though- don't need it on the Wacom), and each menu bar shows the contents of the foreground application for each monitor?
Seems to me like Apple's multi-monitor setup is pretty weak if this is indeed the situation and there is no apparent solution (at least XP has Ultramon).

  • External Monitor Woes

I'm sure I had seen this issue posted earlier, but I can't seem to find it now.
On my upgrade to Leopard a few weeks back, everything went fine with the exception of my Boot Camp upgrade.
My external monitor is not recognized after the upgrade under Windows. (It worked like a champ under the Boot Camp beta version.)
I'm running an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. When I first upgraded, I was on Windows XP. After hours on the phone with Apple customer support, we got the external working, but only with a sideways orientation. Apple CS was to further research, but I had no further contact from them. (We could find no option in the ATI control panel to change the orientation.)
In the meantime, I reloaded and updated drivers with no avail. I also upgraded to Vista Ultimate. And now, I can't even get the monitor to view at all. (Again, I reloaded updated drivers ... with nothing.)
I took my machine to the Genius Bar at my local Apple store with no luck. We could get an Apple monitor to work under Vista, but all non-Apple monitors that they tried could not get a signal. (BTW, the monitor works just fine in the Leopard environment.)
I've tried everything I can possibly think of given my pedestrian-level knowledge of my machine. Since I absolutely need my exernal monitor since I am an editor, I am at my wits end and the only option I can think of is to go out and buy an Apple monitor.
Anyone seen this problem or heard a solution?

Is this problem with Leopard or Vista?
If it's Vista I suggest the BootCamp forum where there are many more running Vista.

  • Powermac 6100 Dead Mouse

I have a 6100 and the adb mouse has stopped moving the cursor. The keyboard still works and I can open files etc. I have tried several mice, and several keyboards. I am fairly sure it is not an extensions problem as I have booted up from 2 different hard drives. Ok, here is what may have happened, (prepare to insert slow shaking of head here), it might have gotten wet due to a leaky humidifier on the furnace prior to the onset of problems. Is there a fuse or something that could short out on the adb bus? Why would the keyboard function but not the mouse?
Any thoughts? I still use the 6100 for the kids and as a printer server for using my old serial laserprinter with a G4 Imac.
    Thanks, Colin

    MC,
I think Grant may be right about buying another mouse but if that does not work, you will have a true mystery on your hands.
You ask "what kind of idiot lets his computer get wet?"
I will tell you. A graduate student brought her laptop into the store and said that two years of her phd thesis was on her laptop hard drive and it would not work. The tech opened the laptop and water ran out. The HDD would not work in a repair sled so he opened the hard drive and water ran out. He started up the drive again and recovered the data. He also made a backup copy.
The store is long gone but the memories live on. What happened? She would take her laptop out to the car, leave it in the freezing cold, haul it into a warm house, back to the car, into school, around campus and home again. It had filled up with condensation. I think she learned her lesson about backing up files.

  • OSX hangs when booting + monitor woes

Firstly, the internal monitor on my MacBook Pro refused to turn on when the computer booted - chime sounded on boot and the computer responded to keyboard input. I managed to fix the monitor by using my iMac as an external display, then shutting down and yanking out the video cable - now the internal monitor works! I'm glad its working, but does anyone have any insight into what went wrong? It seems really strange and I wan't to avoid it hapening again.
Secondly, I now have another serious problem. OSX refuses to boot.
I've started the computer in verbose mode and this was the result:
    http://benanderson.homeip.net/uploads/phpG9ptPf.jpg
    ** /dev/rdisk02 (NO WRITE)
    ** Root file system
       Executing fsck_hfs (version diskdev_cads-540.1-34)
I verified the start up disk and its permissions from a Lion install DVD and it passed them with flying colours. I restarted the computer in Safe Mode, but even when booting in safe mode it hangs. Progress bar gets to about 1/3 of the way and then stops. http://benanderson.homeip.net/uploads/phpA7jg8J.jpg
I know fsck is file system check, but its been 10minutes and it hasn't budged from that spot. I'll leave it running for an hour or so (I know checking a disk can take a while if its a serious issue), but does anyone have any solutions that don't require me erasing the disk in the event the OS really has gone caput?
Lastly - what would have caused this? The last time I used the computer was the day before yesterday and there were no signs of error. I turned it on today and then all this happened. Fluke? Bad blocks? I'm just concerned because this computer is less than a year old - and to have something like this happen is quite worrisome.
    Thank You!

You will hang on "setting default..." if you are are trying to mount NFS filesystems in your /etc/vfstab and you cannot reach the server where these filesystems reside. You can "boot -s" and comment out these filesystems in your vfstab so you can boot or you can resolve why you can't reach the server where the filesystems reside. Metainit pertains to DiskSuite. You may have used DiskSuite to create metadevices.

  • PowerMac 6100 doesn't boot 7.6

    Hello,
My Power Mac 6100/60 AV refuses to run 7.6.1. I installed a brand new system from a CD and everything went fine during the installation, but as soon as I restarted I got this white window and the system frozen with no mouse pointer:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5417175/6100-freeze.jpg
Shift-booting works, so I thought it's an extension problem. I disabled everything in the Extensions Manager - still not working. System 7.1.2, 7.5.5 and 8.1 worked fine on that computer. Why 7.6 and 7.6.1 don't work?

    Problem solved!
Here's what I did. I booted from an Apple Software Restore CD (the one that has all Mac OS versions prior to 9) and initialized the hard drive (again) using Drive Setup 1.7.3. This time I only made a single partition. Then I updated the disk driver. This is something I don't remember doing before, at least not using Drive Setup 1.7.3. And finally I installed 7.6 and 7.6.1 from that Apple Software Restore CD.
I tried installing from that CD before and it failed, so I can only assume updating the disk driver using Drive Setup 1.7.3 did the trick. The idea came to me after reading this tech note:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1249?viewlocale=en_US
Mac OS 7.6 discs have an earlier version of Drive Setup (1.2.2) so it's possible 1.7.3 did something different to the disk.

  • Power Mac 6100 and Mac IIsi Files rescue needed

I have a PowerMac 6100 and a Mac IIsi that I need to rescue the files I have on the hard drives. I haven't turned either of these babies on since 2000. Do you think I have a chance of rescuing them? When I shut down my PowerMac before I moved I couldn't rebuild the desktop anymore. The other Mac has all my Mom's files that she typed before she passed away. If you have any ideas of what I can do, I would appreciate the help.
PowerMac 6100   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier   MacIIsi

    Aleki,
Start up the computers and see if they work. The 6100 will probably have a dead battery and need a little extra trick to get the monitor to start up. Push the power button in. After ten seconds, push the power button off then on quickly. This will wake up the monitor.
I had a total stranger drive up to the house and ask for a computer so I said "let's give this one a try for the fun of it." I grabbed an LC 580 that had been out in the pacific/inland northwest weather for over a year ( our storms come in from Portland) and the Mac started right up. I do not recommend leaving your computer out in the rain but if you forget one out in the yard, just dry it out and start it up. No moving parts - just blow the dust out of the disk drive. lol
You will need to put an IBM floppy disk into the drive, open files and save them as rtf files to the floppy for the most convenient file transfers.

  • Display getting clipped when using 26" TV as monitor

HELP! I recently connected my Sony LCD TV to my single G5 PowerMac as a monitor with a DVI to DVI cable. The resolution is excellent, but the margins of the desktop are getting clipped. So for instance, the menu bar at the top of the screen is NOT visible!! The dock is also partially clipped. The right and left edges are less noticeable. I've tried playing around with the resolution settings and the color sync utility, but nothing is working. Any suggestions?

I've looked through the TV manual, and there's no mention of turning overscan on/off. I'm also running with the stock NVIDIA 5200 video card, and NVIDIA's TV Tool doesn't seem to work with Macs. Finally, I have the option of turning overscan on/off if I connect my G5 to my TV via s-video, but not with a dvi cable. Does that make any sense??

  • LG Monitor and New Mac Pro -- Colours out of Whack

I have an LG L226WT and a 20" Apple Cinema Display connected to a brand new Mac Pro.
Both monitors (in the same configuration) were running on my old PowerMac G5 before.
The Cinema Display works fine, colours are good, so is light etc.
The LG first had ghosting (severe at that) and this morning the colours are totally out of whack. Looking at some photos I had taken a week ago and colour corrected on the G5 now look like a child painted them (on the LG monitor, on the Cinemadisplay they are fine).
It's not the graphics card either. If I take a screenshot on the LG and look at it on the Cinemadisplay the colours etc. are correct, but the LG is right now pretty useless to me. I tried to calibrate it but the end result is pretty much the same, it just does not seem to want to play nice.
I don't think it is the DVI cable, as it is securely screwed in and in the same location as on the PowerMac, turning the monitor off / on seems to resolve the shadow problem but not the colour issue.
Anybody have experienced this? Any tips outside of trashing the LG and buying a new screen?

The ghosting issue is still one when I first turn the computer on. I found that I have to turn the monitor off and on and it resolves the issue.
I also found the source of my colour problem, it comes down to the LG "resetting" itself to some "automatic improvement" or whatever you want to call it, which completely messed with the tones. After I turned that "feature" off it worked well, but man, that took me three days to figure out.

  • Can I Upgrade a Mac PC.

I have a Mac running off of OS 8.6, and I know it is an old computer. Is there a way I can upgrade to a newer and better edition?
    <Post Relocated by Moderator>

At this point and time... to take good money and throw it way in upgrading a machine depends on several things.
    1. Are you wanting to challenge yourself and learn about computers?
    2. To what extent are you wanting to upgrade?
    3. What are your expectations from your efforts and upgrades?
    4. What specifically are you wanting to upgrade? — because if you're coming from 8.6, there is a TON of upgrading (assuming your machine is old and bone-stock).
    5. Are you up for the challenge?
Yes, you can. You "could" upgrade everything from your ROM DIMM, to your processor... and EVERYTHING in between, at a great expense with noticable improvements rock-solid performance.
The PowerMac Beige G3 was build and designed to be upgraded — period.
I have (2) Beige G3s, one of which is fully upgraded and rock solid. The second is a back up and a spare parts machine. It runs great, but I use the "built" one. It is super nice to have a reference machine.
I have (2) G4s, both Dual Processors. One is my "dream machine" (Quicksilver) and the other, a back up that sits on the closet floor.
    I have (3) other PowerMacs 6100/66, 8500/120, and an iMac G3/400 — all unplugged.
    Suggestion:
Add up the costs of the upgrades wanted, and weigh them against the cost of simply buying a newer machine.
I've learned soooo much from upgrading, mostly all archaic.
Do as you wish and enjoy.
    1. Upgrade your ROM DIMM up to Rev. 3
    2. Upgrade/replace your VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) if made by "Royal Tech"
    3. PC100 CL2 SDRAM RAM modules: 768MB total
    4. Overclock your logicboard from 66.83MHz up to 83.32
    5. Upgrade and/or overclock your ZIF processor
    6. Upgrade your PCI Graphics Card
    7. Upgrade to a USB/FireWire Card
    8. Upgrade your OS to 9.2.2
    9. Upgrade your CD to a DVD-R/W
    10. Upgrade your Hard Drive(s)
    11. Upgrade with some speakers
    12. Upgrade your monitor
Or, buy a newer computer at a great low price (used) that would simply outperform the Beige G3.
    Note:
You have to know that the Logicboard bus speed of the G3 can be no faster than 83.32MHz, the PCI bus speed at 33.33MHz, and the maximum (overclocked) processor speed of 666MHz @ 8x (J16=P3, P4)
    *The B&W G3 bus speed was 100MHz
    *The G4 bus speed(s) were 100MHz, 133MHz, 167MHz
(*) Maximum clocking multiple of 10x
It's all in the math and how you calculate it. It's fun. It's educational. It's computer experience. It's time consuming. It's expensive. It's a computer. But it is after all... a Mac!
    Good luck.

  • Mac mini core solo running very slowly

Hi folks, long time reader, first time poster (sorry, couldn't resist):
I just got a nice shiny new core solo mac mini 1.5 with stock ram and it feels like it runs slower than my 450 mhz dual processor powermac. Activity monitor shows that if I try to run microsoft word and entourage at the same time I run out of free ram - is this normal? I'm thinking of upgrading the ram, but don't want to void the warranty if it turns out to be a hardware problem. Any ways that I could check it out?
    Thanks
    Mike

    Yes.
Running Microsoft PPC binaries under Rosetta will take more memory. And the stock 512 meg is sufficient, but as with any modern Operating System, more memory means better performance.
I went to Best Buy recently and picked up these 2 sticks of RAM giving me 2 gigs of RAM in my Mac Mini Intel Core Duo:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7644196&type=product&id=1134699426 321
I replaced the preinstalled RAM in about 10 minutes. Undo the case (worst part actually), remove 4 screws, disconnect one onboard cable, replace RAM, reverse process.
It made a huge difference in just about everything, as was expected. It also seems to have cured my video bleeding problems too.

  • Dead imac intel....

    HI,
Our intel imac is over a year and not under warranty however, why the heck should a main logic board go bad - processor bad -after a little over a year. This machine sits on a desk never moves, never turns off. Not very dependable considering we are still using G5's that have been on desks for 5 years, still use a powermac 6100 for our shiva lan rover!!! sill use boni blue imac's - 50+ of them! I was hoping there would have been a re call or warranty extension something "FORD" like to get this fixed. Parts are about 2300 (need a hd too) and brand new is 1700. Somethings wrong here!
    Bill

Furthermore, your good experience with G5s and bondi blue iMacs is not representative of all G5s and bondi blue iMacs. If you navigate the forum, you'll find there are lemons of every model, in every age group. They aren't common, but the forum will give the impression that they are, because this is a troubleshooting forum. When there is a warranty extension, it is found here:

any ideas on what i should try? thanks

    Leopool,
Some have found that using CD-RW disks makes them hard for older computers to read. I use CD-R disks for most transfers.
There is a great site with a wealth of information on the care, feeding, and upgrading of the 61XX series. Anyone with a 6100 needs this site bookmarked. It's here:
    PowerMac 6100 Upgrade Guide
When I found the site, I discovered that the 6100 can hold and use more RAM than the "official" 72MB maximum. My 6100/60 now has 136MB RAM aboard, along with a 4.3GB hard drive.
