Powermac 7500 Hard Lockups

Since it runs OS 9, I see no way to read "logs" if there are any to begin with, unlike OS X (which I may run one day on this machine).
First, It's a heavily G4 upgraded machine, with it's original 100MHz CPU removed and running a 1GHz G4 now. I've tried many operating systems, from 8.1 to OS 9.2.2 (yes, forced into it). I even tried removing the Radeon 7000 in it, AND the G4, and it'll still do this hard lockup.
Now, when I say hard lockup, mouse cursor won't even move. I had a PowerMac 5500 at one time, that did this very same thing, and under the same random occurrence. I since got rid of that computer cause I got tired of the crashes. But with this 7500, I don't want to get rid of it, because I see it has potential to be a nice computer.
I recorded this Youtube video of it, and it ran fine throughout the video just fine as you can see (with the G4 but onboard video), but what you didn't see, was after the video, when just going on AIM and sending someone a file, it hard locked, yet under the tougher situation of playing internet video via flash, it didn't lockup and did quite well actually. So it's not a stress situation, and no, it doesn't overheat.

Any ideas as to why it can be doing this, and how I can tell? Can it be bad memory? Is there any memory testing apps? If I boot with extensions disabled, it will NEVER lock up, even with the G4.

I asked because my ZIF carrier card (in an 8600) had that option. I settled on 48-49 MHz for stability. Are you using an internal SCSI hard drive or have you installed an ATA controller card for the boot drive? It could be a hard drive problem. I once had intermittent system hangs in a beige G3 and after testing the hard drive, determined that there was irreparable damage somewhere within the first 2 GBs. I partitioned the drive, with the first partition sized at 2 GBs. I deselected the "mount on startup" option for that partition with Drive Setup, so the problem area of the drive is no longer used/visible.

  • USB 2 combo Card on Powermac 7500

    Hi,
I have a PowerMac 7500 running 10.4.11 with XPostFacto. Basic setup is as follows:
    -Sonnet 1Ghz G4
    -1GB RAM
    -ATI Radeon 9200
    -Generic USB (1.1)
    -Generic Ethernet card (10/100)
The setup works very well. However, I have been looking to replace the USB card with either a USB2/FireWire combo card (preferably) or just a USB2 card for that machine. (I want to connect an iPod at USB 2 speeds, and an external FW drive). However I don't really need the FW if combo cards are not recommended.
    The question is:
    - Is the 7500 able to handle USB2 reliably under OSX? (I know OS 9 only supports USB1, and I don't use it anyway). I have been looking on the internet but haven't found a clear answer to that. Many people report using USB2 combo cards and having system lockups, or having to stick to 1.1 speeds when connected to PCI Legacy Macs.
    - If it is indeed possible to have the 7500 use USB 2 reliably, which card can I find on the market today? I have been looking but apparently they are really hard to find for 1rst gen PCI Macs.
The X Post Facto forum is pretty vacant these days, so I figure maybe someone here can give me a hand.
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi Silversorcerer,
Thanks for your thorough reply. I've heard about the Tempo Trio card, but, like you say, it's no longer available for Mac. All other USB 2 and combo cards that Sonnet sells are supported from the B&W G3 onwards.
I can tell you for a fact the Sonnet Tango 2 (Firewire/USB2) is not supported. I bought one. The USB works for mice and keyboards, but any other device which requires USB 2 locks the computer within seconds of use, even when connected to an external power source. Firewire works. Sonnet states on it's page that the Tango 2 requires a Powermac G4 or G5. I thought that this was just a decision from Sonnet to stop customer care for previous macs but I was wrong. Even though the card holds exactly the same name and part number, apparently the one I have is a new revision which is physically different.
I've been reading up the posts at X Post Facto, and there are other cards that may work for USB 2 ( SIIG, and ADS DLX-180) but those posts are a few years old and I am not sure if they are the same or they have also been revised. The manufacturers state the cards require at least a B&W. I've also read people buying PC only cards and having no problems when installed on PCI legacy macs, but those posts are from 2006.
Bearing that in mind I wanted to know if anyone has tried any USB2 card available today that worked with the 7500.
I have a Samsung Flat Panel 19" which I have been using with the Radeon 9200 for more than 2 years. I don't know about Cinema displays though.
X Post Facto has always worked flawlessly for me. I have the original 1 GB drive that the computer came with and have OS 9.2.2 installed on it (using OWC's 9.2.2 patch). I also have a Quantum SCSI II 8GB Drive with 10.4.11.
For me, the installation process was quite easy: under OS 9 I downloaded XPF 4, inserted Tiger CD1, and chose to boot from it with XPFs' control panel. I got to the installation window and proceeded with no problems. I had to use the built in ethernet port to connect to the Internet and download the software updates from Apple and the drivers for the ethernet 10/100 card.
I also installed PCI Extreme which allows Quartz Extreme to be enabled with the Radeon 9200. It makes a huge difference in video performance. Core Image on a 7500 as far as I know is not available. People have flashed PC NVIDIA cards and have gotten Core Image on pre-AGP Macs but not on Old World Macs.
I also installed Sonnet Cache to enable Level 2 and Level 3 cache on the processor upgrade.
It's amazing how expandable my 7500 has proven to be. I don't know how easy it is to get XPF running with your configuration, but I would definitely give it a try. 10.4.11 works perfectly on the 7500, including classic.
I'll be glad to answer any question you may have with my config and my experience with XPF.

  • MacBookPro and PowerMac 7500

Before I discard my old PowerMac 7500 I want to make sure there are no files on that computer that I need to save on my laptop or external drive. Problem is, I can't get the 7500 to work with my monitor (and I have verified that the monitor does indeed function properly on another computer). The SCSI port on the 7500 hasn't worked in years, and it looks like the monitor port is also malfunctioning. I cannot therefore see what is still on the 7500 hard drive.
Is there any way I can use a network to get "into" the 7500, see what is there, and then transfer any useful files to my laptop? I don't think Terminal mode works on OS 9 on a 7500. I was going to try to hook up the machines via Ethernet, but that might not work if I cannot turn on File Sharing on the 7500.
Or should I just let the 7500 rest in peace?
Thanks in advance for all constructive suggestions

You've obviously used the 7500 for many years. Can you think of any file on there that you'd need? Think of the programs that you have on there and how you might need to import files from them to programs used on the Mac now. If there is a way, at this point, it might be a hair puller. So, I think just let it go. I'd remove the hard drive. That might be the way... install the hard drive in an enclosure and attach it to your MBP.

  • 10.5.3 hard lockups

Never had this issue ever before. Updated to 10.5.3 tonight. Have experience two hard lockups already inside 2 hours. Whole machine locks up hard, must push power button on my MacBook Pro and restart.
    Ugh....

Had similar problems, twice in two days. Seems to be only native cocoa apps that are effected. I was running ichat, mail, safari, coda, firefox, and eclipse, and all apps except firefox and eclipse completely locked up and force quitting wouldn't work. I had to manually restart the machine both times.

  • Hard lockup, no logs, how to debug?

So I'm having some hard crashes lately. The only way to resolve is to hold the power button to shut down the machine. Nothing gets written to /var/log and the screen freezes. So, is it possible to find out what happens? Crashes don't happen on other OSes on the same machine so I don't think it's a hardware problem.

I've been experiencing hard lockups since late last year. After loosing a significant amount of data I reinstalled Arch64, KDE and upgraded all packages but the freezing is still there. The thing is, Ubuntu runs very stable on the same machine and hardware.
I ran a memtest without errors and at the time of the last crash there was no unusual behavior, high temps or ram usage. And obviously no logs. I just went with the linux-lts kernel because Ubuntu runs a 3.0 kernel, but it froze up again despite the change. It freezes randomly without activities like if I leave it on overnight it will crash at 3AM or during the day when I am away it will crash at 11AM or sometimes 5PM.
It used to freeze while playing audio or video but this seems to be solved. The last time it locked up while I was actually sitting here was when I opened Chromium and although I rarely use it the system has crash maybe 3 times while opening Chromium. At least twice it locked up while loading archlinux.org in Opera and occasionally just clicking the mouse.
One of the threads I've been folowing is here. I falsely narrowed it down to the kernel because many users have Gnome and/or ATI cards whereas I have KDE and nvidia, although I may try the nouveau driver just to be able to eliminate that. Another alternative is to install the 32-bit Arch unless someone can report lockups with it.

Description:  Random hard lockups with any power management features on (c-state, C1E) and RAM set to X.M.P mode.  Also experiencing jittery mouse.  As suggested in another thread, turn off all power management features and manually set RAM to DDR1333 along with changing the voltage.  This seemed to have helped as I have had no lockups in two days and my mouse is significantly better.
I have read that there is not much difference running in XMP mode and I understand that but I would like to take advantage of the power management features and eventually overclock as well.  Please let me know if you need any more info from cpu-z etc.  Thanks in advance!

Your mem setting changes probably solved the problem. You need to enable your power saving features again to test them one by one. Leave EuP2013 disabled.

  • How do I get a crashed Powermac G4 hard drive to mount?

I have a Western Digital 20GB Ata hard drive that has crashed badly. Despite reading other forum posts here and trying out the useful suggestions, I have been unsuccessful in remounting my hard drive. This has denied me access to a precious archive of work e-mails in my macmail mail-box, and other home office work data including Safari bookmarks tracked via the now non-existent user preferences folder.
This is all information that I would really like to recover without sending to a data recovery company. The loss of data access has been stressful for me over the last several days.
Fortunately, I always stored my text edit, word, and other raw documents on a subsidiary drive. However, and this is unfortunate, backups of my "home folder" fell of the radar due to some significant health issues over the past couple of years. Now, I'm paying the price for that loss of focus.
I'm running a Powermac G4 AGP machine with 1.5ghz fastmac processor, 1.75gb ram, OSX 10.4.11. This has been a good computer for my home office work including e-mails, web browsing etc. The main drive in a two drive setup has been a 20gb Apple branded hard drive Western digital drive that was reported full before the crash. This was after the console log file in the system folder reported large gigabyte file logs.
No major data has ever been stored on this hard drive, only the OS, yet it would fill up. This has happened in the past and I have been able to delete these files, then restart the computer thus clearing hard drive space. I've done this for the last two years.
Two weeks ago when the computer reported low hard disk space, I had a several safari windows open. The computer then froze and the entire computer became totally unresponsive. I had to force power off the computer to get it to restart.
Since then, despite using disk utilities like Techtool, Disk Warrior, Prosoft Drive Genius, Prosoft Data recovery and other  software demos like Remo recover, Total Recall, Stellar Phoenix, and Virtual Lab the drive has never been "seen" by the OS to let the data recovery software access it.
I've also used techniques like Safe boot, Singe user mode, Target disk mode, plus mounting the drive in a Wiebetech Firewire 400 external enclosure, and still I've never managed to get the drive to be recognized by the system, let alone remount. All I got was the circle with a slash through it or the mac smiley icon that alternates with a question mark.
The 20Gb WD was the primary ide drive in a two drive setup that also has a Maxtor diamond Max Plus 9 60Gb ATA133 Hard drive which was my subsidiary drive for data storage. I have since mounted this drive when it was made the only drive on the ide cable (the Maxtor has 10.4.6 on it that I can boot from successfully). (If the Western Digital is either the primary or secondary drive on the joint ide cable, the Maxtor then fails to mount).
The crashed hard drive symptoms are:
On startup the Western Digital disk makes several whining noises like it wants to startup, and also sounds like it is trying to access the drive data platters, then it goes quiet. After making the drive the only drive on the ide cable, and rejumpering the drive accordingly, it is only making two whining or "coughing noises" like it wants to start, then goes quiet. In neither case, does the OS ever register its presence.
In the firewire enclosure the drive either starts with the first type of sound and then reverts to periodically making the second type of coughing sound or it just makes the "coughing sound".
    Crashed Drive Description is:
WESTERN DIGITAL 20GB TRIDE 655T0022 WC93300Y5H7YA EIDE HARD DRIVE. Made August 18, 1999.
    MDL (Model) is WD205BA-40AK.
    Firmware is CRNBLKMO.
PRIMARY CONTROLLER BOARD (PCB) NUMBER ON WHITE LABEL JUST ABOVE DATA CONNECTOR IS 845000A 30M01G2V2E2 0056, Apple part # 655T0022
Has Apple logo and came with Sawtooth Machine 450Mhz that was upgraded to 1.5ghz via Fastmac processor and 1.75Gb CL2 Crucial Ram.
Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome to get the drive to mount and then copy of my home folder data.
    Thank you.

    Hi Glen,
thank you for your response and suggestions. Truth be told, the old wives tale you mention is gospel for some depending on where one looks on the internet. There's actually a website dedicated to the discussion of crashed hard drives that was started by a guy who persisted in trying to look at alternatives because the professional data recovery option was too expensive for him to pursue.
He eventually had success with an exact make and model "donor" drive logic board swap and got all his data back. On the forum there and elsewhere many people swear by the freezer method as the only way they got their data back.
However, the option also has risks so has to be applied with care. So I'm not committed to pursuing that path and no I wouldn't blame you for putting the idea in my head or suggesting the link if I was to try it.
I'm also not currently trying to mount the hard drive but instead have spent some time researching my options prior to data recovery. I had the thought to find a database of failed or failing hard drive sounds so I could compare it to the sound my Western Digital is making. I eventually found a great place with failed hard drive sounds for all different makes and types (ironically run by a generous Data recovery company who want you to be able to determine whether their services are needed).
I compared the sound of my hard drive to several  Western Digitals on their website plus the sound of dying hard drive on another site and was relieved to hear that my hard drive doesn't sound like it is dying. What it sounds closest to is the example of a fried logic board. In that instance a logic board swap remounted the drive. Many other people on the web have had success with this method, provided the drive is an exact or close match in manufacturing date, model type and firmware. (Some specialist companies can also burn the exact crashed drive firmware code into the donor drive's logic board.)
At best, if the firmware doesn't match, the drive simply spins up but doesn't mount. So at the moment I'm trying to locate an exact donor drive to do a board swap. Since the WD is an apple branded "Expert" rather than the more common Caviar drive this isn't easy but I'm hopeful.
Secondly, on another website I saw the suggestion to try mounting the drive into a PC or into bootcamp. The thought here is that when a hard drive is full it runs out of index room and starts overwriting itself. This in turn leads to data corruption. So if the Pc ignores the Western Digital generated data corruption errors that are taking down the ide bus in my mac, and mounts the drive it can help diagnose if data corruption is the problem or not.
Some here might think that mounting a drive in a pc is problematic, but it was suggested by a mac expert. Atleast the bootcamp option is something for me to look into first as it will keep the Western Digital on a mac.
That's where I am so far.  Any other thoughts or suggestions are  welcome.

  • Powermac 8600 Hard Drive Question

I recently recieved a powermac 8600 without a hard drive. I was wondering, I think it has to have a scsi hard drive, but I am not sure. I do not want to put a lot of money into this. Where can I find scsi hard drives, if it takes them?
    Thanks in advanced!

    B. Chismar,
Where are you located in this big wide world? In the US, university surplus stores, government surplus auctions, thrift stores and recyclers all have SCSI drives kicking around if you look.
The last time I shopped for 4 gig drives they were $5.95. I got one for $5 and found out it did not work. I can probably take it back and trade out for another.
School districts also through out old computers that have smaller drives. And, there is always eBay. Good luck.

  • Help! soft and hard lockups are driving me nuts

Hey guys and gals I'm having a very annoying problem and Its very bizarre.
I hope this problem hasn't already been covered a million times but...
I'm getting lockups in a lot of apps.. Firefox, openoffice, gaim and its just like my system becomes lagged or something. Its never happened before. Happens especially when I use text fields and scroll around and use bookmarks in Firefox. OpenOffice hardly runs anymore.
Before you ask, its not a memory or cpu usage problem, I sit on a max of 90mb/439mb and I never get high cpu usage when these stalls happen. I also don't see any error messages from the programs.
As I noted before.. its something funny with text input, I notice it especially with leafpad where I no longer get a vertical line that shows where my text is up to. Also as I'm typing this it isn't blinking.
Woah, weird. I think its somehow related to nedit being open. I've been using it pretty constantly the last couple of days and I've had it open while I've had other programs open. Maybe its stealing the cursor from other programs and causing them to halt?
    Bizarre.
    I'll do some more testing.
If anyone has heard of anything like this please inform me.
    Thanks.

I have it too, and know exactly what causes it...
If you copy text in Nedit, Firfox will sort of freeze. My personal workaround is to avoid copying and only use selection as muhc as possible when I want to use both. But when copying anything in Nedit anyway I just click on the locationbar (or ctrl+l), do shift+left/rightarrow to select some text and then copy that with ctrl+c, to overwrite Nedit's copy and solve the problem.
Apparently there aren't that many Nedit users, as I never read about it before. I thought I was the only one having this problem. I hope it goes away when I update everything, if not I'll need to look into it.

    Hi,
Do you have a Retail 10.5 Install Disc?
Try holding mouse button & option, (alt), key down while powering up, hopefully that opens the optical drive and brings up the boot manager.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat Hard Lockups

    Hey everyone,
I apologize if this has been posted previously in the past, however, I've been having a terrible time with my system lately. It's approximately ten months old. Whenever I'm visiting a website with a large amount of graphics embedded within it (two good examples that lock my computer every time are Threadless and The Stock Exchange) It has locked up other times as well, but this seems to be the most predominant issue. I often have to hard reboot several times after one of these "episodes."
Here's what I've done to attempt to fix the problem:
-Changed from the Realtek LAN that I'd been using to the NVidia LAN. No improvement.
-Changed power supplies from a ThermalTake TWV480 to the one listed in my signature. This improved the more random lockups I'd been experiencing, however, did nothing for the situation I described above.
-Ran MemTest86 on both peices of RAM, running dual channel, then running each peice seperately. Tests came back pristine, no problems at all.
-Did a one-pass zeroes write to the hard drive and reinstalled Windows slipstreamed with SP2. No improvement.
-Made certain all fans were working and cleaned the dust from the heatsink. Current CPU temps are 29degC, and never reach over 39degC at 100% CPU usage. My video card is currently running at 30degC, and doesn't go over 39degC as well.
-Made sure all antivirus/anti-spyware/firewall software was up-to-date with the latest definitions. System is scanned every morning.
Am I missing something obvious here?
Any help would be much appriciated! Thanks in advance.

First , if its only websites with lots of graphics that causes a hang, have you tried to installa  different web browser (opera / firefox).
Second, uninstall corecenter and check that all of your bus speed settings are at default in the BIOS.
Third, Try to alter your timings on your memory see if you can improve the stability that way (just cause memtest comes back with no errors doesn't mean that it's okay).
Fourth, Try updating your Bios V1.4 is pretty old and some microcode was changed for better memory compatability after v1.4 if i remember. (check this forum on how to update your BIOS safely first).

  • Powermac 7500 monitor compatibility

    Hi all,
I have a PM 7500 that was hooked up to a HUGE 19" CRT that I want to dig out of mothballs for my kids. the monitor, though, just has to go, and I'm hesitant to put much money into any display for such an older system. SO, my question is which (currently available)monitors will still work with this. it is the original video card that supported, I think, 1280x1024, and I think the software was 8.1 or so (I may revert to 7.6). viewable size is not a big issue, and a smaller crt would be ok, but given how low some 15 or 17 lcd's have gotten, I could spring for that. the 7500 could use a vga monitor and I already have the old griffin monitor adaptor thingy that compensated for differences between pc and mac (inline between mac and display) many thanks!! has original video memory too, which I think was 2mb, expandable to 4.
    ibook pm7500
    ibook pm7500

If the amount of money spent for the replacement is the primary consideration and you just want a smaller display on the desktop, check for thrift stores in your area that accept donated computer equipment. As the prices for LCD displays have come down, many working CRT displays are donated to charitable organizations for the tax deduction. Over the past few years, I've bought six displays from local thrift stores and (fortunately) haven't had a problem with any of them yet. For a 15"-17" CRT, you'd probably pay about $15-$25 (or less), depending on how many they're trying to move from the shelves. As for LCD displays, there is an optimal resolution/refresh rate to be supported by the graphics controller. Even though I never considered connecting an LCD display to one of my 7500s, I installed ATI Rage Pro 8 MB PCI video cards in them. The screen redraws are much faster (especially for internet use), than the onboard graphics controller can provide.
If the 7500 has been in storage for some time, you'll undoubtedly need to replace the motherboard's 3.6 volt, ½AA lithium battery. An extremely weak or dead battery can cause a number of startup problems, not to mention the incorrect date/time alert each time you power it ON. The battery can be found at Radio Shack (extremely overpriced), battery retailers, or various online sources.

  • PowerMac 7500 Two-page display

I recently had to move my 7500 while doing some room painting and after hooking it back up and getting it running, the monitor is now in a "two-page display" mode. I am using a Hitachi 15" display through a Liberty plug adaptor. I have tried everything I can think of to bring it back to a one page display, but to no avail. I haven't been able to find the set-up configuration for the Liberty switch settings, but to my knowledge they were not tampered with during the removal and reinstallation of the computer. Anyone have any ideas?

    >"I recently had to move my 7500..."
You pulled the plug. Your PRAM battery is dead, and your parameters are corrupted.
    Reset the PRAM:
Hold down 4 keys at startup:
    Command Option P R
touch the power key to start up.
continue to hold the 4 keys until you have heard the chimes 4 times.
Release the 4 keys and it should start up normally.
    Buy a new battery.

  • Hard lockup after a period of time, can't nail down the cause

Hi, all.  New to the forum.  Thanks in advance for any time you spend helping me.  I hope I am able to get my problem outlined to you before I lock up.
I have the MSI Diamond Plus 939 board.  X2 4200+ sits in it, running at 2.2Ghz.  I don't overclock anything.    I have 2Gig of Kingston RAM running at the default values.  My video card is the 7900 GT running in the PCI-E slot.
I lock up after running anywhere from 5 minutes to 4 hours.  Once I lock up, and this is the strange part, the 4 green lights on the D-Bracket stay fully on at the next reboot attempt, and there's no post or video data being sent to the monitor at all.  I have to make repeated attempts to reset the system before the D-Bracket LEDs finally reset to red and begin cycling through on their way to handing everything off to the OS.  These lockups are OS-independent.  I have Vista and XP on two separate HDs.  The HD with XP is IDE and the one with Vista is SATA.  The IDE drive is my system drive, which has the file on it for dual-booting.  I lock up in either OS, and sometimes even while in the BIOS.
I changed my power supply and processor fan (in case it was power purity or heat related), and I've moved/changed cables and tried to eliminate known good items and so forth.
Just tell me what else you need from me and how to get it and I'll give it to you.  This locking up is seriously cramping my style.
    John

    All,
Here's something I came up with since my last post.  I ran dxdiag, and here's everything from it.  It's a lot, but better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, right?    I snipped audio and video driver information where indicated in order to fit this into the post.

  • Macbook Pro Hard Lockup

I have been having this issue with increased frequency lately.
I don't often shut down my macbook pro, as I take it to and from work.
It seems almost every day the computer will hard lock up, either immediately or shortly after a "resume".
The symptoms are whatever was currently in-memory at the time the computer was working will still function for a short time, ie. IM programs, text editors etc.
But as soon as I try to hit a web page or open/close a new hard drive I will get infinite bouncing of the program icon and the computer will hard lock, however the mouse will still move around.  Expose etc will not respond.
I believe it is hard drive related, as when I have to hold the power button to shut down, i dont feel the hard drive spin down and on one occasion right before I noticed the lock-up behavior, I felt the hard drive spin down under my palm where I rest my hand while I type.
I'm not quite sure why the hard drive just decides to spin down and not back up but it is starting to happen so frequenty that my files are becoming corrupt.  Having Outlook corrupt every day is getting really annoying.
Any help or direction on troubleshooting would be appreciated.

One thing to do is to boot from your install disc and repair your boot disk. It's especially important to do this after a forced shut down. Boot from the install disc and navigate to Disk Utility. Check and see if the SMART status is verified--if it is not, the drive needs to be replaced. Repair the drive until there is nothing left to repair. If you have errors that Disk Utility cannot repair, it's possible that a stronger utility like Disk Warrior could.
For a more comprehensive check of your hard drive, you can download and run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It seems to be somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may detect impending hard drive failure sooner.
Keep in mind that repairing the drive only repairs the software on the drive--it does not repair the drive physically. A drive that is failing physically can introduce software corruption that can be repaired temporarily, but the repair won't hold indefinitely because further corruption will continue to be introduced.
From your description, it sounds like your drive may well be headed south.
    Good luck!
