Powermac 7500 monitor compatibility

Hi all,
I have a PM 7500 that was hooked up to a HUGE 19" CRT that I want to dig out of mothballs for my kids. the monitor, though, just has to go, and I'm hesitant to put much money into any display for such an older system. SO, my question is which (currently available)monitors will still work with this. it is the original video card that supported, I think, 1280x1024, and I think the software was 8.1 or so (I may revert to 7.6). viewable size is not a big issue, and a smaller crt would be ok, but given how low some 15 or 17 lcd's have gotten, I could spring for that. the 7500 could use a vga monitor and I already have the old griffin monitor adaptor thingy that compensated for differences between pc and mac (inline between mac and display) many thanks!! has original video memory too, which I think was 2mb, expandable to 4.

If the amount of money spent for the replacement is the primary consideration and you just want a smaller display on the desktop, check for thrift stores in your area that accept donated computer equipment. As the prices for LCD displays have come down, many working CRT displays are donated to charitable organizations for the tax deduction. Over the past few years, I've bought six displays from local thrift stores and (fortunately) haven't had a problem with any of them yet. For a 15"-17" CRT, you'd probably pay about $15-$25 (or less), depending on how many they're trying to move from the shelves. As for LCD displays, there is an optimal resolution/refresh rate to be supported by the graphics controller. Even though I never considered connecting an LCD display to one of my 7500s, I installed ATI Rage Pro 8 MB PCI video cards in them. The screen redraws are much faster (especially for internet use), than the onboard graphics controller can provide.
If the 7500 has been in storage for some time, you'll undoubtedly need to replace the motherboard's 3.6 volt, ½AA lithium battery. An extremely weak or dead battery can cause a number of startup problems, not to mention the incorrect date/time alert each time you power it ON. The battery can be found at Radio Shack (extremely overpriced), battery retailers, or various online sources.

  • MacBookPro and PowerMac 7500

Before I discard my old PowerMac 7500 I want to make sure there are no files on that computer that I need to save on my laptop or external drive. Problem is, I can't get the 7500 to work with my monitor (and I have verified that the monitor does indeed function properly on another computer). The SCSI port on the 7500 hasn't worked in years, and it looks like the monitor port is also malfunctioning. I cannot therefore see what is still on the 7500 hard drive.
Is there any way I can use a network to get "into" the 7500, see what is there, and then transfer any useful files to my laptop? I don't think Terminal mode works on OS 9 on a 7500. I was going to try to hook up the machines via Ethernet, but that might not work if I cannot turn on File Sharing on the 7500.
Or should I just let the 7500 rest in peace?
Thanks in advance for all constructive suggestions

You've obviously used the 7500 for many years. Can you think of any file on there that you'd need? Think of the programs that you have on there and how you might need to import files from them to programs used on the Mac now. If there is a way, at this point, it might be a hair puller. So, I think just let it go. I'd remove the hard drive. That might be the way... install the hard drive in an enclosure and attach it to your MBP.

  • Monitor compatibility

Good morning. Can anyone point me to a link on Apple's site for Mac mini monitor compatibility? I'm considering purchasing an Intel Mac mini because I have a monitor that is large and a little old but excellent. It's the ViewSonic CRT PS790 with a 15 pin mini Dhub VGA BNC connector. Will the DVI to ADC adapter work with this monitor?
    Thank you.

the 1.83 intel mini nicely handles my 22" Viewsonic LCD at 1650x1050.
I cannot imagine that it could not handle an older CRT at up to 1600x1200--though that might be high for that monitor, that's what my G3 can handle on an old "Sylvania" 19"although I usuall;y use 1024x968 simply so i can see what's being displayed<G>)
Push come to shove, Costco has 19" viewsonic LCD for less than $200

  • Sceptre monitor compatibility

I have been using my 19" Sceptre Monitor (X19GV-HDTV) off my MBP for a year and it works perfectly. I have since have tried to get it to work with two Mac Mini's, a 2012 model, and a 2010 model, and the monitor gives me the message "Unsupported Mode", after using every adapter and cable, i contacted Sceptre tec support, and now they are suggesting I get from Apple  "Monitor Compatibility". Does anyone know where i can find this?

    Hi Paul,
Both VGA & HDMI don't work?
Could the Mini's have been set to a higher resolution before attaching this Monitor?
If so try booting up holding the SHIFT key when it's connected.

  • Wierd monitor compatibility problem

    Hi all,
Got a wierd monitor compatibility problem. G3 works fine on a sony 21" CRT.
Connected it to a Daytec 15" CRT which works fine with a windows 98 PC.
With the G3 I get the apple and the spinning up logo then the screen just goes blank.
Is this monitor PC only or something? It is an old monitor but I thought any monitor should work
    if the vga connector fits?

So you are using this directly plugged into the stock Display card in a Blue & White G3 with NO adapter?
The Mac is probably still set for a higher resolution that the SONY can do, and has not noticed the display has changed.
Video pros says that Video can be plugged and unplugged all day long with no bad effects. If your old display is still around, try setting it to 640 by 480, save changes, and swap the other one in "live" at that resolution.
    Other tricks:
Reset the PRAM. This will send you back to a default setting while booting up, but may change when the system becomes active.
Boot from a CD. This ignores the settings on your Hard drive, and boots to a very simple resolution like 640 by 480 to ensure that Most Macs can start up with it.

  • USB 2 combo Card on Powermac 7500

    Hi,
I have a PowerMac 7500 running 10.4.11 with XPostFacto. Basic setup is as follows:
    -Sonnet 1Ghz G4
    -1GB RAM
    -ATI Radeon 9200
    -Generic USB (1.1)
    -Generic Ethernet card (10/100)
The setup works very well. However, I have been looking to replace the USB card with either a USB2/FireWire combo card (preferably) or just a USB2 card for that machine. (I want to connect an iPod at USB 2 speeds, and an external FW drive). However I don't really need the FW if combo cards are not recommended.
    The question is:
    - Is the 7500 able to handle USB2 reliably under OSX? (I know OS 9 only supports USB1, and I don't use it anyway). I have been looking on the internet but haven't found a clear answer to that. Many people report using USB2 combo cards and having system lockups, or having to stick to 1.1 speeds when connected to PCI Legacy Macs.
    - If it is indeed possible to have the 7500 use USB 2 reliably, which card can I find on the market today? I have been looking but apparently they are really hard to find for 1rst gen PCI Macs.
The X Post Facto forum is pretty vacant these days, so I figure maybe someone here can give me a hand.
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi Silversorcerer,
Thanks for your thorough reply. I've heard about the Tempo Trio card, but, like you say, it's no longer available for Mac. All other USB 2 and combo cards that Sonnet sells are supported from the B&W G3 onwards.
I can tell you for a fact the Sonnet Tango 2 (Firewire/USB2) is not supported. I bought one. The USB works for mice and keyboards, but any other device which requires USB 2 locks the computer within seconds of use, even when connected to an external power source. Firewire works. Sonnet states on it's page that the Tango 2 requires a Powermac G4 or G5. I thought that this was just a decision from Sonnet to stop customer care for previous macs but I was wrong. Even though the card holds exactly the same name and part number, apparently the one I have is a new revision which is physically different.
I've been reading up the posts at X Post Facto, and there are other cards that may work for USB 2 ( SIIG, and ADS DLX-180) but those posts are a few years old and I am not sure if they are the same or they have also been revised. The manufacturers state the cards require at least a B&W. I've also read people buying PC only cards and having no problems when installed on PCI legacy macs, but those posts are from 2006.
Bearing that in mind I wanted to know if anyone has tried any USB2 card available today that worked with the 7500.
I have a Samsung Flat Panel 19" which I have been using with the Radeon 9200 for more than 2 years. I don't know about Cinema displays though.
X Post Facto has always worked flawlessly for me. I have the original 1 GB drive that the computer came with and have OS 9.2.2 installed on it (using OWC's 9.2.2 patch). I also have a Quantum SCSI II 8GB Drive with 10.4.11.
For me, the installation process was quite easy: under OS 9 I downloaded XPF 4, inserted Tiger CD1, and chose to boot from it with XPFs' control panel. I got to the installation window and proceeded with no problems. I had to use the built in ethernet port to connect to the Internet and download the software updates from Apple and the drivers for the ethernet 10/100 card.
I also installed PCI Extreme which allows Quartz Extreme to be enabled with the Radeon 9200. It makes a huge difference in video performance. Core Image on a 7500 as far as I know is not available. People have flashed PC NVIDIA cards and have gotten Core Image on pre-AGP Macs but not on Old World Macs.
I also installed Sonnet Cache to enable Level 2 and Level 3 cache on the processor upgrade.
It's amazing how expandable my 7500 has proven to be. I don't know how easy it is to get XPF running with your configuration, but I would definitely give it a try. 10.4.11 works perfectly on the 7500, including classic.
I'll be glad to answer any question you may have with my config and my experience with XPF.

  • MONITOR compatibility, MONITOR compatibility

Does anyone know if a Samsung 320MXN-2 32in LCD Monitor is compatible with a PowerMac G5 to use to edit on FCE? Thank you for any help! Susan

if a Samsung 320MXN-2 32in LCD Monitor is compatible with a PowerMac G5 to use to edit on FCE?   (Nvidia GeForce 7800GT - 256MB  Dual DVI graphic card)
Yes, because it has a DVI input and your graphics card has a DVI output.
Here are the full specs.  But this monitor only has 1366 x 768 resolution and has been discontinued.  It's going for $600-$700 refurbished, $900-$1000 used and if you can find a new one it will be $1200 or more.
    I would think your money would be better spent on a used Apple A1083 30" Cinema Display (2560 x 1600 resolution, will use the dual-DVI output of your nVidia card) or a new Dell UltraSharp monitor (U2711 @ $999, 2560 x 1440 resolution or U3011 @ $1299, 2560 x 1600 resolution)

  • Monitor Compatibility Question

I plan on purchasing a Mac Pro with the Radeon X1900 XT card in the near future. I have been shopping around for a good monitor, and the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP (found here: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku= 320-4335) caught my eye. However, at the bottom of the tech specs, it lists only PC under "Compatibility." I know of other people who have used Dell monitors for their Macs, and this monitor does have DVI, so I don't see why it would not be compatible with the Mac Pro. Does anyone know definitively whether or not this monitor would work?

    Hello,
You should be just fine. The majority of monitors are listed as compatible with PC's only. The simple reason is that the manufacturers don't care to test them with Macs and have all their resources devoted to supporting what they know.
If they mentioned that it would work with a Mac, then they would be stuck trying to answer your questions on the phone if you needed help. Since they don't use Macs, and don't maintain a staff of Mac trained people, it is easier to just omit official support. That way they can just tell you that they don't support Macs and hang-up the phone.
I've been using PC monitors with my Macs since before Apple even supported PC monitors at all (you used to have to buy monitors with Apple specific cables). I would just use an adapter to convert the PC connector to connect to the Mac video port.
In all my years, I've never found a PC monitor that would not work with my Mac. And, that still holds true today. I've used several low-end monitors with my current machines, and all work fine.
I've even got a bargain basement DVI monitor connected right-now, and it works perfectly.
Basically, if you want official support and a guarantee, then buy a monitor that specifically lists Mac compatibility.
But, if you are willing to accept that their phone support will avoid helping you, then go with any brand you like.
Understand that Dell is primarily interested in selling and supporting Dell computers. They have no interest in fielding calls from Mac users because they are not going to be familiar with OS X. Naturally, they will list PC compatibility because they know Windows very well.
But, you should also understand that the only difference between an Intel-based Mac and an Windows PC, is that the Intel-based Mac can also run OS X. Otherwise, they are just different brands of computers that use pretty much the same hardware.
    I hope this helps.

  • Powermac 7500 Hard Lockups

Since it runs OS 9, I see no way to read "logs" if there are any to begin with, unlike OS X (which I may run one day on this machine).
First, It's a heavily G4 upgraded machine, with it's original 100MHz CPU removed and running a 1GHz G4 now. I've tried many operating systems, from 8.1 to OS 9.2.2 (yes, forced into it). I even tried removing the Radeon 7000 in it, AND the G4, and it'll still do this hard lockup.
Now, when I say hard lockup, mouse cursor won't even move. I had a PowerMac 5500 at one time, that did this very same thing, and under the same random occurrence. I since got rid of that computer cause I got tired of the crashes. But with this 7500, I don't want to get rid of it, because I see it has potential to be a nice computer.
I recorded this Youtube video of it, and it ran fine throughout the video just fine as you can see (with the G4 but onboard video), but what you didn't see, was after the video, when just going on AIM and sending someone a file, it hard locked, yet under the tougher situation of playing internet video via flash, it didn't lockup and did quite well actually. So it's not a stress situation, and no, it doesn't overheat.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Vm13xQ02tk
Any ideas as to why it can be doing this, and how I can tell? Can it be bad memory? Is there any memory testing apps? If I boot with extensions disabled, it will NEVER lock up, even with the G4.

I asked because my ZIF carrier card (in an 8600) had that option. I settled on 48-49 MHz for stability. Are you using an internal SCSI hard drive or have you installed an ATA controller card for the boot drive? It could be a hard drive problem. I once had intermittent system hangs in a beige G3 and after testing the hard drive, determined that there was irreparable damage somewhere within the first 2 GBs. I partitioned the drive, with the first partition sized at 2 GBs. I deselected the "mount on startup" option for that partition with Drive Setup, so the problem area of the drive is no longer used/visible.

  • PowerMac 7500 Two-page display

I recently had to move my 7500 while doing some room painting and after hooking it back up and getting it running, the monitor is now in a "two-page display" mode. I am using a Hitachi 15" display through a Liberty plug adaptor. I have tried everything I can think of to bring it back to a one page display, but to no avail. I haven't been able to find the set-up configuration for the Liberty switch settings, but to my knowledge they were not tampered with during the removal and reinstallation of the computer. Anyone have any ideas?
PowerMac7500   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

    >"I recently had to move my 7500..."
You pulled the plug. Your PRAM battery is dead, and your parameters are corrupted.
    Reset the PRAM:
Hold down 4 keys at startup:
    Command Option P R
touch the power key to start up.
continue to hold the 4 keys until you have heard the chimes 4 times.
Release the 4 keys and it should start up normally.
    Buy a new battery.

  • Monitor compatability g3 266 mt

I need to buy a new monitor for my g3 266 mt. I'm running os 8.6. How do I find monitors that are compatable with this older model? What do Iook for, and what do I say to a sales person?

    Alan,
Thanx 4 the quick response. Profiler gave no indication of video ram to the card in C1 and it only shows 640 x 480 @ millions, 2 meg to the primary card in slot P1 (or was that F1?). I do not mind the lower resolution for some tasks but It seems to me that the Sony Trinitron monitor should be multi sync.
"leaves the extra ones hanging in mid-air" is what I was thinking but had not checked the glossary yet. I am so old school that I still work with the nubus cards in post Mac II machines Grant refers to frequently. I can now afford my first dream machine, a IIci with a portrait monitor connected to the onboard video and a nubus color card for a color monitor on the side. Hot stuff and $10,000 in 1988! lol
I still use a Quad 700 with a nubus video card, and a 20" super sharp B&W monitor for drafting real estate documents and deeds as my primary work machine. That setup with Filemaker Pro 2.1 has earned me more money than any newer machine! Nothing beets video real estate.
Time for me to update to PCI. I remember when Psyko had the only PCI computer in the house!
    Jim
Weather is too nice today to spend more research time indoors after yesterday's snow. Other cards and other questions will have to wait. Thanx again.

  • X1 and USB monitor compatibility

Hello! I can't connect Thinkpad X1 (1294-2NG) to a monitor L2230XWa (5453-HB1) via USB interface. It does not matter I use USB2.0 or USB3.0. Any time when Windows 7(64bit) starts to recognize a monitor it reports a signal lost and computer hangs with fan running on high speed. Does anybody know is this configuration compatible at all?

    hey Atterdag,
with regards to this, could you uninstall the current display drivers for your X1 then plugin the L2230 .
Let windows install its generic drivers and then try the monitor again. If it works, go to http://support.lenovo.com and reinstall the display driver of yout X1.

  • Apple MiniDisplayPort to DVI-D 2560x1600 Monitor Compatibility

    Hi all,
I just purchased a DoubleSight DS-305W 30" display only to learn it doesn't work with the Apple MiniDisplayPort to Dual DVI adapter. I had the flickering issues described in length here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
I thought it was the adapter firmware issue, so I drove 3 hours in the snow to the Apple store to get a replacement with the new firmware (1.0.3). After doing so, the issues persisted.
I am now wondering if anybody has experience with other 2560x1600 monitors and this adapter. I am considering buying a NEC LCD3090WQXi-BK -- has anybody tried this one? Thanks in advance.

Not that I have seen. My new WS monitor came with the vga cable and also a DVI cable. So I didn't have to buy anything extra to have DVI out. I could choose whichever one I wanted.

I am about to buy a reconditioned A1081 Cinema Display LCD Monitor 20"? But i need to know if it will work with my MacBook Pro 10.5.8 and my ipad 2? As i am buying it to use at an exhibition. iIf so what adaptor will i need to hook both of these up? Thank you in advance.

Are you sure the monitor is set to receive input over the VGA input? Have you tried the DVI input on the monitor? You may have better luck with DVI.

  • Bootcamp mini-DVI second monitor compatibility?

Hi, I am planning to buying an iMac 20-inch, 2.4GHz (Intel). I want to attach another 20-inch monitor via the mini-DVI port. This should be no problem as long as I stay in Max OSX (Leopard).
BUT my question for help is if I (need to) boot up in Windows, can I access both monitors through the mini-DVI out-port and Bootcamp? Has anyone tried? I want to run Windows and use both monitors... Any limits to what I can do? (resolution and such)
Thanks, hope you understand my question...
    /P

BUMP! I'm having an issue with this also. Just installed bootcamp 2.1 with XP SP3 and I can't get anything to display on my second monitor (Mini-DVI to HDMI). It just stays blank.
Windows recognizes it in display settings but no matter what I do it stays blank. Kind of a bummer for not being able to watch the Celtics playoffs streaming...
Anyways.. any help would be appreciated.
