PowerMac and iBook using airport and router

Hi, I have a desktop PowerPC G4 as well as 2 iBooks. The PowerPC connects directly to the DSL modem and obtains internet without issue. The 2 iBooks I have both can connect to the internet thru Airport Express, when it is plugged directly into the DSL modem. When I try to use a router so that all 3 computers can have internet access, I fail. Either one or the other gets the access. Well, actually, last night I tried to set the router up and only the desktop had internet access. The airport blinked a miserable amber all evening. In the morning when I came to check email, the airport was green (No laptops were on) and my desktop computer (which had only gone to sleep) had no internet access. After several failed attempts at restarting the modem, the router and the computers, still nothing is working. Can someone please help me set up a proper wired/wireless network?? I'm so frustrated....

Ok, I now understand the problem. The Farallon is not a router, but an Ethernet hub. Signals going to a hub will go to all devices connected to it simultaneously, and this doesn't work well when you have a hub connected directly to a DSL or cable modem ... since the modem is expecting only one device to be connected to it.
What you need is a router that has a built-in Ethernet switch, like the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) or a similar model from another vendor. This would then be connected directly to the modem and from there both wireless and wired computers would connect to it for Internet access.

  • I am currently running Mac OSx10.6.8 and need to upgrade to 10.7.5 or later to use Airport Exreme router. I am unsure about Mavericks and want to know if i can upgrade to the next highest OSX. 10.8.5? Any advice?

Can I upgrade my OS from 10.6.8 to 10.8.5 instead of going for the Maverick upgrade ? I need 10.7.5 or later to install an Airport Extreme router and I am hesitant to download Mavericks OS because of particularly bad reviews. Advice, opinions??

Yes, but it'll cost you $19.99.

  • I cant get online with my lap top using airport secure router my lap top is running windows vista anyone know what i need to do?

I connected airport express and made it a secure network   works fine  with my IMAC desk top and copy machine    but cant seem to get on line with my DELL laptop running windows vista  does anyone know what i can do ?  I put in my passpharse code but it says windows cant connect

So, when you are in the window that provides the Equivalent Network Password, you are saying that your WPA Password and the WPA Pre-Shared Key values are the same? That is, you are already using a 64-hex character password? (see image below)

  • I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work?

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

How can I set up a guest access point with a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme? I am using a Telus router with the Time Capsule used as a wireless access point (bridge mode). I don't want the guest access point to have access to my network.

The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet.  The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing.  With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.

  • Beginner question: Can I create a hybrid home network between an ethernet-connected iMac and an airport connected Macbook Pro using a hybrid router?

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
    Thanks!

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?

  • Recently moved and installed ATT DLS - I use their wireless router and connectted my airport express - Now I'm getting the Blue ? on some images

Recently moved and installed ATT DLS - I use their wireless router and connectted my airport express - Now I'm getting the Blue ? on some images - and at times - videos don't load.  I've increased / deleted Cache.  Suggestions? Misconfig?  Could it be possible my configuration from MacBook to router isn't correct?
    Thanks!

    JG,
    Thanks for the info.
Couple of questions. I found an apple support document on this topic that opened with this line:
"AirPort Express and all AirPort Extreme base stations can use WDS. Earlier AirPort base stations can't."
If the TC is an airport extreme base station, why can't this work to extend the network? I think I misunderstand. Here is the full article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2044?viewlocale=en_US
If I buy a new airport extreme, set it to wireless-n only as my main router, am I correct that my existing time capsule could be used as a bridge if plugged in upstairs?
Final question (and that should do it), could I take this old airport express, plug it in upstairs using the ethernet connection, and just create a separate wireless network to use with a different name?
I'd like to keep one network if possible but just kicking around short term solutions.
    Thanks again.

Can I now use my airport extreme in the bedroom to extend wireless signal?
Yes, if you plan to connect the AirPort Extreme back to the Motorola modem/router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Extreme extend the Motorola signal wirelesssly.

  • Can I use Airport Express with Comcast router and Apple TV?

I want to connect my iPod Touch (version 8.1.2) to a home stereo wirelessly.  I am considering getting an AE Base Station.  I have a Mac mini running OSX 10.9.5 connected wirelessly using a Comcast router.  I also have an Apple TV, which I have not yet connected to my TV.  Here are some questions.
Are there any problems with doing this.  In particular, can I continue to use the Comcast router?
Also, I have seen some comments saying that the cable modem slowed down when AE was added.  Is that true?  Thanks,
    Owen

The stereo doesn't have wireless (or bluetooth).
My understanding is that the iPod Touch has a built-in airplay transmitter.
If so,  connecting the AE Base Station to my stereo would allow sending music from my iPod to my stereo.
    Is that correct?  Thanks.

  • IBook G3 Airport and network issues!!

    Help!
    I have an iBook G3 900 MHZ, OS X Version 10.4.11
I am trying to connect wirelessly using a Linksys router and cable modem. There is a non-Mac laptop in the same house that is able to connect to the network, but I'm not able! Airport doesn't recognize this or any other wireless networks when I click on the icon in the upper right corner of the main screen. I can connect using an ethernet cable, but not wireless.
It worked before, and all of the sudden, decided it wanted to stop working...
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks!

Assuming the iBook used to be able to connect and now it won't, you can check these items:
    1. make sure airport is turned on in the menu bar
When you click on the airport icon, do you see any networks?
    2. check in your *apple>location> network preferences>network port configuration* to make sure that airport is checked
    3. Put your location on automatic
    4. make sure that the router is not hiding its SSID (name of network)
    5. make sure that mac address filtering is not turned on in the router, which is a feature that only allows specific wireless devices to connect, with the owner of the network being the one who grants the permissions.
If all of that checks out, then have you removed your airport card at all since it last worked? Have you repaired permissions, made sure that the network name and password you are using and the type of encryption being used are correct?

  • Use airport for internet and ethernet for local?

Hi. Ive searched around and cant find an answer for this.
I have a 27" imac connected to my router and all works fine for accessing the internet.
I have several other devices close by that I want to connect via ethernet. If i connect the imac to another router via ethernet I can browse my local devices but loose internet connectivity. It is as if the imac will suspend the airport connection while the ethernet cable is connected. I don't want my second router to act as a bridge as it doesn't support N speeds.
Essentially, I want the imac to use airport for internet and the ethernet port for local files.... The only workaround I have is to unplug the ethernet cable from the back of the imac when i want to use the internet. I'm hoping it's just a DNS issue, but cant seem to resolve it.
I do not need internet connectivity for the other devices and don't see how i can do that without enabling the wireless side of my second router and then creating a bridge...
    Any suggestions?

It is as if the imac will suspend the airport connection while the ethernet cable is connected.
The Connection Order on your iMac is set so that if both AirPort and Ethernet are "on", the iMac will give priority to the Ethernet connection.
If you want to configure your iMac so that it gives priority to an AirPort connection if both AirPort and Ethernet are "on", give this a try:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and open Network
Click on the small gear icon at the bottom of the connection list on the left
Click on Set Service Order and drag AirPort to the top of the connection order list
    Click OK, then click Apply
Now, if both AirPort and Ethernet are active, your iMac will give priority to the AirPort connection. If you want to connect using Ethernet, you will have to turn AirPort off by clicking the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of your computer screen.

  • Can I set up a wireless printer as a network printer and not use Airport?

I have a HP Photosmart Plus wireless printer set up in my network for use by several iPods, iPads, and iPhones.   I have an iMac running 10.6.8 that I want to set it up on, but to use it as a regular network printer, not using Airport.  Is this possible?  I haven't been able to hit on the right combination of settings.  I have a Samsung laser printer that works this way, and an Epson that is attached to an Airport Express, but all I get on the HP is garbage.  It will work when I set it up using the HP install disk, but I have to use Airport and I don't always get a good signal where the iMac is located.  I would prefer to use  the wired connection to my router and access the HP's IP address, like a wired network printer.     Any suggestions?

I'm using a Canon printer here which is networked via my Airport Express.  My printer cannot be Wi fi enabled simultaneousely with an ethernet cable connection. It is either or.  I realise that this doesn't fully answer your question, but I just wanted to give you a clue.  You'd need to consult your owners manual, or HP to get a definitive answer.
If you want to use the HP printer printer only with the wired ethernet connection to your router, that should be no problem as long as it is ethernet capable.
After setting it up for wired ethernet capability, you will need through the sequence of powering your router down, and resetting you Lan network so the router and printer can pick up their respective IP assignments.

  • How can I create my own network in my dorm? (Using Airport Extreme + ethernet cable) (To connect AppleTV and Sonos successfully with no restrictions)

So I recently set up my Apple Airport Extreme Router in my dorm and have a BIG problem. It works and lets me do most things on my own network, but when I try doing things on my external devices connected to the network (Apple TV and Sonos Hi-Fi Sound system) the connection just doesn't go through. I'll give two examples.
After setting up my Sonos system successfully, I was prompted to update the software so I can use options that need internet access such as pandora and soundcloud. It just didn't work at all. It gave me an error that had to do with internet connection. I tried numerous times.
On Apple TV, I used AirPlay on my phone to mirror what I was seeing on my phone and then tried to play youtube, soundcloud, and other music apps and none of them worked.
My guess is that it has something to do with my school's restrictions on streaming or downloading. But none of this stuff is actually restricted so I know it must be due to the transfer of information between my network (which is connected to the school's network I am assuming, since my ethernet port is in my dorm wall)  and my external devices.
Honestly I'll probably get the "Your school has these restrictions answer", but I know there is a way to fix this and I really want the answer!!
    Thanks,
    Andres

You don't need the AirPort Express to do this.
You can set your Mac to share it's wired connection over the wireless port and the iTouch can connect directly to the Mac.
You could also do it with the AirPort Express, but you don't need to - it's overkill for what you've described.
