PowerMac freezing with fans at full speed?

I have an issue that I suspect is due to a overheating video card.
My mac will freeze, the screen will go blank and the fans will start gradually spinning at full speed. I haven't been able to reproduce the issue because it mainly happens while the computer is idle overnight.
I have been able to reproduce it once while watching an video clip. what I noticed is that if I try to restart straight away the spinning circle under the apple logo (the gray screen before the login panel appears) gets distorted like a TV with bad signal and the computer hangs. I have to leave it for a few minutes to be able to boot.
I opened the computer while it was hanging and the fans were getting ready for a lift off and the small fan on the video card is spinning very slowly. not sure if this is how it should.
Any ideas what can be wrong. I tested everything with the Apple Hardware Test CD. I monitor the temp. inside the computer and everything seems normal. The problem is that it will hang while idle during the night. I will try and replace the video card fan with a new one just in case.

Had this problem and what worked for me (at least for a few weeks so far) was I turned of the Screen Saver and the overnight freeze with fan running at full blast have since ceased. However, when researching my logs to find what was going wrong I noticed that "fan failure" was a symptom and recalled that when heavy video/graphics was being shown when using Safari especially my Dual G5 would occasional freeze up slowly becoming unresponsive, so I turned off first Screen Saver and the problem has gone away, so far for now.
As mentioned above I think it is video card and/or fan related. I was going to get a new fan (because of the system log mention) but will wait longer to see if the problem returns.

Spinning beach ball of death after crash with fans running full speed

I recently put my machine to sleep - came in the next morning to find it running all fans at full speed and frozen. Did a hard reset (power button in for 5 seconds waited 15 secs and then power on. It rebooted after a long re-boot period. Since then it has slowed down. Many apps take an age to open. Many freeze and there is the infamous SBoD. I have rebuilt permissions, installed 10.5.8 combo, done a permission repair from a separate firewire disk, run onyx - which at time never ends and has to be aborted. Activity monitor shows no exceptional activity when the SBoD is running. I had significant issues until last December when i did a clean rebuild and installation of leopard and put all essential software in from clean install disks - all in all had a pristine machine which was working perfectly until the week before last when the full fan and freeze crash occurred. I notice that it speeded up after the 10.5.8 combo install and permission rebuild from external disk but gradually slows down and gets increasingly unstable requiring forced reboots more and more often. I have no hacks or other background processes other than Virus Barrier 6 which ran perfectly before the crash.

As expected after running well at about 11:40 Mail slowed down and the SBoD started.

Desktop loads, then unit freezes with fans on high speed

I've read through the other posts, but this problem seems different enough to this newbie that I started a new question. Thanks for any wisdom/help you can pass along.
The unit had been working normally (if a little slower) until this weekend when it started doing the following each time I attempted to start up:
1) All start up proceeds as normal
2) I log into my account
3) Shortly after my desktop loads, the cursor freezes and the fans begin running at high speed
4) I hold the power button and the unit shuts down
I've tried this three or four times since and the cycle repeats itself each time, never allowing me to get beyond the loading of my desktop.

The are a couple of things to try. First, make sure tha there is no dust clogging your vents. Second, reset the SMU:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Release the power button.
5. Attach the computers power cable.
6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Third, reset the PRAM.
If none of these works, try using Disk Utility:
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then, when you are booted from your internal, Repair Permissions from your internal drive.

Tecra A10-S3501 Power Light Flashes, Fan Runs Full Speed.

I have a customers Tecra in the shop, and after getting a good description of what was happening at the tme of failure, I still cannot seem to figure it out. She was watching a flash video when it froze. Upon reboot, it will not init the LCD, it does seem to at least partially POST, cd drive spins up, and all LCDs blink like normal. Still no LCD init, and the power light blinks green, no pattern, it is not a binary post led code. Fan spins up directly to full speed and stays there for the duration. I counted 20 one second blinks with fan at full speed, before powering down. Any ideas? Customer has no warranty, so would be nice to fix it for her. :-) Thank you, and have a great day.

Hey,
Can you see a picture on external monitor? If yes it might be only a FL inverter issue of internal display. This is not an expensive part so this would be easy to fix the problem.
Anyway, if you cant see a picture on external monitor, I think its related to another part, maybe mainboard or something else. This should be checked from an authorized service provider
By the way: If you have connected an external monitor, use FN+F5 key combination to switch between them

IMac G5 (no iSight) fans running full speed always

Hi,
The processor usage is relatively low (like 10%) but the fans are full speed at all times from the second the power comes on. I imagine there isa problem with the mother board? I've tried resetting all the SMC stuff, no effect.
Any ideas?
Is this something Apple Stores will charge to fix?

It could be either faulty, leaking caps, or a failing power supply unit. Yes, Apple will charge since you are long out of warranty. You can open the machine and check the caps yourself, they look like little soda cans, and their tops should be perfectly flat and there should be no exudate.

Classic makes fans run full speed

I think this is new. When I run Classic my fans run full speed (10.4.8 G5 iMac 20") with any of the kid's games. I've done the SMU reset, blown dust from vents, tried different power settings. I think blowing out the dust reduced fan use in OS X, but not in classic.
Thermograph data suggests the fans are behaving appropriately, so I think the system is running hotter than in the past. Anyone have other ideas? Anyone else seeing this classic behavior?

I discovered that going back to Classic from one user to the other make a large use of CPU (80 to 90%) thus rising the temperature and conversly the fan...
If you open classic in one enironnment that's not true. Check it with Acivity Monitor.

Fan runs full speed at start up

HP Pavilion p6-2037cb purchased 1/19/12. Windows 7. There is no error message.
When I turn the computer on after it has been off all night the fan runs full speed. This happened a few times in the first month. The first time it stopped itself after a few minutes. Then I learned to stop it by simply restarting the computer. This still works, but what used to happen a couple times a month, has happened twice in two days so I worry the problem is getting worse.
It never happens when I am using the computer because I do nothing that requires a lot of cpu's or causes heating. I just surf the web and do email. No games or videos or TV.
If it is a fan connection problem I would like to know the nearest repair service. I would rather bring it in than ship it. But I can't find a list of authorized warranty repair service centers. I followed links on HP Support Assistant but got sent to a site that does not list Pavilions.
I need to know why the fan runs full speed at start up and where to get it fixed near where I live.

IMac fans running full speed constantly.

A few days ago my iMac's fans started running at full speed, which they very rarely do. Now every time I turn on my computer after about a minute the fans reach full speed, I'm only opening Google Chrome, Twitter, iTunes and Coversutra which has never caused the fans to run before.
I've downloaded a program to monitor temperatures of various parts of the iMac but nothing is getting hot enough to cause the fans to run at full speed.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM multiple times which hasn't fixed the issue. I've run the Apple Hardware Test on the original install disks which gave an issue number relating to the fact that the fans are running on full speed.. surprise surprise...
The computer isn't very old, was purchased almost to this date in 2009. It's an 8,1 iMac with a 20" screen. 4GB RAM and a 2.4Ghz processor.
Would be extremely appreciative if anyone has any idea how to fix this problem.

Get free iStat Pro. This code is obviously related to the HD, but I don't know if it necessarily means the HD is failing. It will show the fan rpms to see which fan is revving up. If it's only the HD fan that is climbing up, this may be related to the HD temperature sensor being faulty. Thing is, the sensor is probably integrated into the drive, so if it's only that that's failing, it will still involve replacing the drive.

Fans running full speed after hard drive replacement

I have a 24" aluminum iMac (iMac7,1) which had a hard drive failure. I replaced the hard drive myself and all went well. However, now my fans are running full speed. This appears to be because of a problem with detecting my temperature sensors now. During the install I only touched two temp. sensors, the hard drive sensor and the LCD sensor. I made special care to make sure I got the sensors back in place.
Using iStat Pro the only temp. sensors I have readings for are the Hard Drive and Power Supply. I am missing ambient, optical drive, CPU, and display. Out of those the only one out of the missing ones I touched are the display one. I have since gone back into the machine to ensure the LCD temp. sensor was fully connected and to ensure the HD one was connected (although that one is working).
What is really strange is the ambient sensor appears to be a diode on the main board so I really don't see a way I could have messed that one up. Also, I didn't touch the CPU sensor (didn't even see it), nor did I touch the optical sensor.
Anyway I have tried:
PRAM reset
SMC reset
went back into the box to make sure all temp sensors where in place.
I am out of troubleshooting ideas. Can anyone provide additional insight?

Besides for the fan noise the machine is running like a champ. The new hard drive seems to be fine, actually my machine boots up faster now than it ever did (faster drive I suppose). I ran disk utility and did a verify on the new disk and it didn't detect any problems.
The fans run at full speed immediately at power-on (maybe a one second pause). I first noticed it when I booted up from the startup disk to do a time machine restore. So yes, it occurs when booting from a system disk.
I have been unable to run Apple Hardware Test, I saw this step in some google searching and Apple docs but I don't seem to have AHT on any disk. I have tried putting the Snow Leopard disk in and holding "d" at boot time to no affect. I did some further reading and found that AHT may only be included on disks that come with the machine. I am going to try to dig up my Tiger disks and see if I can get AHT to run from there (10.4 was the factory installed OS when I bought my iMac).
I am also considering trying to re-install SMC firmware (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2368). Even though it will be the same version at least I know the SMC reset has taken place.
Since the fans run full speed right at start up that suggests to me that it is a physical hardware problem (i.e. something wrong with the sensors) or a firmware issue. I am leaning toward firmware.

Mac Pro will not boot, revs fans at full speed

I had my Mac Pro (2006 3.0 quad core) asleep, it woke itself up and didn't display video, instead revved the fans at full speed and did nothing, so I shut it down using the power button. When I turned it on, it did/does the same thing, no chime, no video to the displays, and I cant boot in safe mode or any other way, it wont even eject the DVD drive if I hold the mouse down.
has anyone encountered this before?
Any ideas?

Give the SMC button a kick, hold it in for 5-10 seconds. Hard to see, but hidden by drive #4.
Or try zapping PRAM/NVRAM first and see if that helps.

CPU fan running full speed after 15 minutes

My 3 month old iMac 24" has just started having fan problems.
Before I went away on a training course, it was working fine. Left it switched off at the outlet for 3 days, now the CPU fan runs full speed after the iMac has been switched on for 15 to 20 minutes.
CPU temp is 24C, CPU heatsink is 28C. Ambient is 17C. CPU fan is 3600rpm. Other fans are normal.
CPU usage is less that 10%. Only Safari is running.
I've tried resetting the SMC - left all plugs disconnected for 15 minutes, reconnected mains power for 15 minutes, reconnected USB, then switched on.
Still the same - OK for 15 minutes, then CPU fan runs full speed.
Anything else that I can try?

I tried again, following your instructions exactly. It seemed to work, running normally for about an hour.
I left all the USB devices unplugged, except for the keyboard and mouse.
I then shut the iMac down, but left the mains power turned on at the wall. When I switched it on again 2 hours later, all was OK for 15 minutes, then the CPU fan ran at full speed.
Shutting down for a few seconds fixes it for another 15 minutes.
I'm wondering if it's a software problem, although I haven't loaded any apps recently, apart from a few monitoring programs since this problem appeared.
Last night I left it running the extended hardware test for a couple of hours, and the fans were fine.
One thing that I noticed yesterday was that the "GPU" temperature readings in iStat were all missing (just "-" displayed) for a couple of seconds when I clicked on Dashboard. Is there a way to keep iStat open while I'm using the iMac?
I think I'll try booting XP and see what happens.

G5 start up problem: stuck at grey screen with fans running full strength

hi, i'm new to discussions, so i hope this question and my technical knowledge and descriptions will be OK: problem: G5 20" stuck at grey screen with fans running full strength..
so far i've tried but did not work:
- power off by pressing the button for 5 secs,
- checked all cables connections etc, take out the power cable try again, etc.
- removed all USB connections, re-did
- tried to use it as 'target drive' connected to my macbook by firewire
- tried to start up and keeping C key pressed
- tried to start up with 'shift' key pressed
- tried to start up with command, options, P and R keys pressed,
- i had an additional RAM, i've taken it out and tried again, no luck
- i've put in Mac OS X install disc1, no luck, and now disc is inside my iMac, can't take it out
any recommendations? thank you!

You may not actually have a bad processor. On the Dual G5's it's not uncommon after a few years for dust and corrosion to build up between the processors and their sockets. You can fairly easily remove the processors and clean the connections yourself if you're at all handy. Basically, snap off the heatsink covers, loosen a few screws and the processor and heatsink come out as a unit.
Clean the contacts on the processors (carefully). And clean the sockets. Be sure to put the same processor in the same place or you'll have issues.
I used 90% isopropol alcohol to clean mine last year. Let it air dry and blew both the socket and the cpu off after with canned air. That done, I reinstalled the processors, buckled everything up and no more "bad" processor... The machine worked perfectly from then on and I assume it still does today. Don't know, someone stole it last month:(...

Fans run full speed when using Parallels

I have Parallels installed on my MacBook but the problems is, whenever I run Windows XP, the fans run at full speed. I try not to run too many programs but nothing seems to help.
Any suggestions?

I think that it's normal that the fans run full speed when you use Parallels. It also means that your MacBook's thermal paste was applied well.
Runing Windows XP in Parallels is a CPU intensive task and it takes a lot of power to run it. As a consequence the CPU get hot and the heat is transfered to the cooler, where the temp sensors sense it and make the fans run faster.
It's normal.
I bet your MB doesn't get as hot as some do...

PowerMac G4 MDD sometimes won't start, fans run full speed

I was recently given a PowerMac G4 MDD but am having a problem with it.
Sometimes it will start and boot OK but other times it will do nothing, no chime, nothing on the screen and after a few seconds the fans (or a fan) appears to start running at full speed.
Turning it off and back on usually makes it work.
I have checked the PRAM battery which seems good at 2.67v, and then I tried resetting the PMU as suggested on the forum somewhere but that didn't help either.
Normally being a Windows\PC person I am not really sure what to do next. I get the impression it's a hardware problem but not sure what.
Hopefully someone else will recognise these symptoms and can help me!

Ha, you just made me check the battery again - I must have made an error because the battery is 3.67v, NOT 2.67v
Unfortunately, I guess that means the battery is not the problem?

After reading and resetting everything with Keyboard I still get blank white screen. The only way I can boot to Mavericks is unplug power cord, push and hold power button while plugging power cord in. Fans at full speed.

Use the uninstaller provided with the Sophos software. You can uninstall CUDA via the preference pane. Be sure you remove the com.nvidia.CUDA extension which is located in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. Not sure if Fan Control has an uninstaller so you will have to do it manually:

Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.

Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:

Be sure to remove your two Login Items. Finally do this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

     Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
                 if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
