  • Update desktop (beige) G3 from OS 8.6 to 9.0 or higher

hello. please excuse if this sounds like a dumb question, but, here goes. i gave my sister my G3 desktop (beige) years and years ago. she's just starting to use it now. it is working on the OS 8.6 system. i think she should upgrade to a higher version of a mac OS, but, i am not sure how to go about doing this.
does she have to start by upgrading to OS 9.0, then, continue the steps to upgrading until she gets to OS 10.1 (or 10.2). i know that this computer model cannot go any higher that than OS 10.2. i am just not sure if i can jump from 8.6 directly to 10.0
oh, and, i see that just buying the OS 9.0 cds are expensive. around $45. at which point i am trying to convince her to buy a newer model of a mac, even if it is used...
    thanks.

  • USB on a powermac 300mhz desktop

    hello,
i have a powermac g3 desktop 300mhz (mac os 8.5) and i am wondering why my USB card is not working. i looked it the apple profiler and it reconises it, i checked it and it is in all the way.... help.
    Jordankennedy

I think it maybe that OS 8.5 didn't contain the best USB driver extensions needed to recognize USB devices.
Each subsequent OS update from OS 8.6 thru OS 9.2.2 contained more USB support through Apple USB driver extensions.
You might consider updating your G3 DT to a more recent OS (8.6 or above) to get better, nore stable USB driver extensions.
You could also, check the apple support search for USB driver extensions. Check to see what OS you need to run these more recent extensions, update the OS (if needed) and install the newer USB driver support extensions

  • DEFAULT CATCH! code=FFF00600

Trying to boot of the Panther Install Disk 1 in a Beige G3 where the Utilities folder disappeared. Safari, Disk Utility, System Profiler, all gone. I would like to run Disk Utility from the install disk but probably should just reinstall.
I have removed practically everything that isn't soldered to the mother board and reinstalled original G3 CPU.
When I double-click the Install Mac OSX icon on the install disk and click to restart, I get a command prompt with the following message:
    DEFAULT CATCH! code=FFF00600 @ %SRR0: 01C00D04 %SRR1: 00003070

If I type boot(return) I get a response "boot CLAIM failed"
If I type bye(return) I get an OS9 Smiley Mac, then it restarts to a perpetual OSX Apple with the spinning spokes. After about 10 minutes, I turn off the power and then back on but it boots off the internal disk.
I've also tried to change the startup disk to the CD and restart and I've tried starting up with the "C" key down. Usually it just boots off the internal disk anyway.

I just discovered that the one DIMM I had left in was not the original, but a third party DIMM. After replacing it with the original memory, I was able to boot from the Install CD. However, Disk Utility was not able to restore my Utilities folder. I will now perform a clean install.

  • Power Macintosh G3 (beige)   Desktop Mac OS X  Monitor problem

I am trying to use a Power Macintosh G3 desktop (beige) that has been unused for about 8 years now. When I first turned it on all was fine, but in subsequent boot ups the monitor has failed to come on. The green light on the monitor flashes. I can hear the operating system booting up but I can also hear a rather ugly sound - which I think has been described as like smashing glass. The happens once when I first boot up.
I would assume it is a problem with the monitor - but am not sure of this smashing glass sound and what that means. If I do have to replace or try a different monitor - are there issues in connecting etc - I presume I will have easy access only to a more recent monitor.
    thanks
    sp1952

What kind of monitor are you using and how is it connected? Some older Apple monitors with the ADB pass-though (for plugging the keyboard and mouse to the monitor when the CPU is tucked under the desk) would not allow resolution changes unless the ABD connection was used.
The Beige G3 will always boot to 640x480 res and then change to your desired setting only after the users prefs load. That also means that, with a dead PRAM battery, it's going to reset to 640x480. If the monitor can't support this res, then you get black.
Try a PRAM reset. Find the "CUDA Reset button" using this logic board diagram:
    http://macgurus.com/products/motherboards/mbppcg3mini.php
Press and hold it for 20-30 seconds to clear all the contents of RPRAM. New factory defaults will load into PRAM on the next boot. A weak/dying battery can lead to corrupted PRAM contents, and the CUDA reset is your new best friend for dealing with such nonsense.

  • Problem Beige G3 Reformat Hard Drive Failed

Planning to donate computer to Charity.
    Problem:
Inserted Disk OS 10.1 in disk drive to erase and reformat internal hard drive. OS 10 Installer appeared on monitor but just in the Menu no installer window. I could open the menus but I could not open DiskUtility or anything else. The apple menu looked like the normal Apple Menu which seemed strange the monitor screen was blue not the CD background. I restarted the Mac and it opened with the Mac icon flashing (?) so I thought I can reformat using OS 9 CD. I started the Mac with the OS 9 installation disk and it opened from the disk correctly but the curser froze in upper left corner. The Hard Drive window was open and highlighted and I could use the ADB keyboard to move up and down the list using the up or down arrow. Finally the optical mouse light went out, connected another optical mouse from another Mac the light came on. I have that mouse connected to my G4 and it works fine on this Mac. I tried to startup with TechTool Pro but it would not open at all. I connected a USB Keyboard to the USB card and could not repeat the arrow action that I could using the ADB keyboard. Now many things come to mind: Bad USB card, Operating System corrupted, Hard drive corrupted, Bad CD drive, or a 10 year old computer wearing out. My only concern is that the hard drive is a 4.1 GD drive has mostly OS and applications but some personal information like resumes and could have other personal data that was in the trash that would not empty saying that I did not have privileges. Anyone know how degauss the hard drive when erasing or reformatting fails.

  • Grey restart message when upgrading PowerMac G4 10.1.5 to Tiger

I'm trying to do an erase and install on my aunt's PowerMac G4 to upgrade her 10.1.5 OS to her newly purchased Tiger. The install DVD works fine up until the actual progress bar of the installation.
So far it's made it to 2, 4, 6, 9, 10, and 15 percent complete before freezing and displaying a grey message stating to restart the computer.
Also, several times during that restart, the grey restart message comes up again.
I've tried looking in the firmware updates (not sure if that has anything to do with it) but I couldn't track down if her model of G4 needed one since I'm not familiar with the terms of "Quicksilver" and I'm not sure if it has digital audio, etc.
Is this just a case of a bad install disc? Is there something else I should be checking or updating first?
Any info and help is greatly appreciated,
    -Betsy Tao

  • Monitor died for G3 Power Mac tower. What do I do?

The monitor to my G3 PowerMac just died. The power button started flashing orange and green and it won't power up.
Is there anything I can do to fix it?
If not..are there any other modern monitors that are compatible or is there a chord that can make it compatible to another monitor?

Have you tried unplugging the monitor for a few minutes? Then power it on and reboot.
I am not sure what the alternating green/orange flashes mean. What type of monitor do you have? What is the make and model?
Also, what model of PowerMac G3? Is it a Blue & White, beige desktop, beige minitower? What type of video card are you using? I am guessing from your post that you do not have another monitor to test with to rule out an issue with your computer.

  • Logic Broad

Can i use a Power Mac G3 All in one logic borad in a power mac g3 beige ????

Those logic boards, for the PowerMac G3 Desktop, MiniTower, and All-in-One are all interchangeable. There are three major revisions that were issued during the product life cycle, but they do not correspond the the different enclosure types.
This article tells how to identify which motherboard you have, based on the version stored in its ROM. If you have swapped around the ROMs without keeping track of which-was-which, all bets are off.
24924 -- Power Macintosh G3: Identifying The Logic Board Revision
Changing the motherboard is a pain-in-the-neck. Unless you have a problem that you are fairly certain is caused by your current motherboard, why would you want to change it out for one that is not superior? You are likely to introduce new problems that muddle the symptoms even further.
A motherboard that chimes has executed millions of instructions and passed its initial tests. The chime is produced in software to tell you that, if the memory checks out OK, and it can find a source of System Software, booting is likely.
If the screen does not light up, you usually need a new battery, not a new motherboard.

  • Wierd copying issue - SBBD

OK, I'm troubleshooting a computer for a friend. It's a PowerMac G4 Desktop model. It appears as if she tried to copy some music from an external drive to her local drive, but for some reason they are copying to the desktop. Easy enough. The problem is that the desktop is filled with icons, and the files just keep piling up, on top of each other. The extternal drive has been removed, but the files keep copying. To make matters worse, all I get is the Spinning Beach Ball of Death, and the CD drive won't open.I can't access the Hard Drive, and I can't stop the copying. I tried starting up in safe mode, but the files keep coming!
    Any suggestions? I'm stumped.

    Jay:
Have your tried force restarting (Command + Ctrl as you hit Power Button)? If you get it to restart go to View Menu in Finder and select Show View Options. Select checkbox Keep Arranged by Name. Close dialog box.
Select as many of the Music files as you can, Open iTunes, drag into iTunes list. Hide iTunes (Command + H) select Music, show iTunes again and so forth.
    Hope this works for you.
    Good luck.

  • Airport Express network suddenly no longer visible -for one Mac..but wait

    Hi everyone
Setup isDSL modem>ethernet>"downstairs" AX...."upstairs" AX connects fine to it as a WDS remote station with 128-bit hex password....
The two ibooks, one G3 one G4 connect fine, and so did the PowerMac g4 desktop that was formerly the software base station (range was too short, so got the AX's). The desktop suddenly stopped seeing the network. Then, it came back on, for about an hour and the internet connect infor showed it being connected for the 60 hours elapsed since that seeming disappearance. Then it went away... 60 hours later, up it popped again, again for an hour, and I downloaded pics from AOL, browsed etc. Come back to find it gone again and has not returned.
Problem is either software/configuration based or intermittent hardware -- how can I find out without replacing the part? (The solution to the very similar problem posted a few days ago had to do with a channel switch... my WDS system base stations are on channel 6 (their choice, I guess).. does not seem to apply.
Does anyone think the Security Update 2006-005 would help, and how would I get it to my non networked desktop?
    Thanks for help!

Well, from reading some other posts, and trying my own experimenting, I have gotten it to work.
Deleting the keychain did nothing, manually connecting to the network by typing the name in etc.. nothing.
What DID work was using my G3 iBook (which could see the network) to use the Airport Administrator to change the channel from Automatic to manual - in this case channel 7 (a completely arbitrary choice).
The thing I cannot work out is why it had this issue in the first place. It worked fine for months then one day decided that it apparently didn't like automatic channel selection.
The problem is solved but the cause is still a mystery.
Hopefully though, this might help others with the same problem.

  • Data recovery question

    Hi,
I'll try to make this as clear as possible. A little while ago my powerbook suffered a fall on pavement. Not only did the hinges break but the battery adapter input module on the inside of the case broke as well. Now the internal battery can't take a charge. Any suggestions on how I can get the data off the disk despite the fact that I can't get the machine to boot because it's dead? My only alternate macs are a 17" powerbook g4 (I think it's aluminum) and a PowerMac G4 desktop (the silver one with the large speaker hole on the front).
    Thanks,
    Matt

Hi, Matt. Rory's got the right idea. The hard drive is easy to remove from your Powerbook and easy to install in an external drive enclosure. Unless the Powerbook was actually reading or writing data when it hit the pavement, its hard drive is probably fine, and will immediately appear on the desktop of any Mac you connect it to via FireWire (or USB2, in the case of your Aluminum Powerbook). 2.5" drive enclosures can be had for as little as about $30, and putting your drive into one will make it useful with whatever Mac you get to replace the dropped Powerbook. I strongly recommend a FireWire-capable enclosure even though USB2-only enclosures are a little less expensive, because a FireWire enclosure will be bootable and a USB enclosure won't.
For a large selection of enclosures for 2.5" drives, check newegg.com, zipzoomfly.com, and macsales.com. For instructions on removing the drive from your Powerbook, select your model from the list of available guides at http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/. Good luck!
