Powermac G4 AGP Graphics

Hi All
My G4 powermac has been running very well since I upgraded the CPU to a sonnet 18ghz, then recently updated the software to OSX 10.5, no problems until a few months later some start-up issues, would eventually start-up after about 20 attempts, read the forums decided to buy a new battery and replace as instructed and reset the small switch next to battery (cuda), power button lights up fans kick in and I have a red light on the main motherboard, no chime and no dvd response (will not eject) interestingly disconnect the ide ribbon and the dvd ejects? odd!!, have reseated the CPU, graphics and ram(2gb) in different slots and one at a time, no Joy, Do I need a new power supply? or is there anything else I could try, I'm forever in your debt if anybody could help. Don't want to part with the old girl!

Hi, you may want to try to check some other parts of the system. I also have a Sonnet 1.8GHz in my AGP with Tiger. it is solid as a rock. It boots off of a 500GB SATA internal drive, using a SATA PCI controller card. One thing that is important, is that you updated the ROM on your machine prior to the Sonnet upgrade. I'll assume you did that. Since your computer worked a long time without a problem, what you may have is corrupted data trying to be written into RAM during the boot up. Another words, you may have a problem with the hard drive, or the data on the hard drive. Since hard drives are pretty cheap these days, find another ATA drive, like a used 20GB, put in in your spare bay, write your OS on it, and select is as your new boot drive. See what happens. If you have no problems on repeated start ups, you may have pinned the problem to your existing drive. Good luck.

Leopard won't install on PowerMac g4 AGP graphics (2) which was pimped to 1.5 ghz with Sony dual power drive with 100 GB internal HD currently happy running on OS X 10.4.10 Tiger, the rest of the G5s (6) was upgraded bautifully. Again anybody out there with slick idea on how to deal with this leftover G4. The Leopard disk simply say " OS X 10.5 can not be installed on this computer" end of story if we insist on trying other ways the machine simply blank-out ( you know the dreaded question mark and the happy face folder). Our IT Guy is ready to chop-shop these machine and has painted himself in a corner on this matter, so I sent out this S.O.S.…I guest the world can help…anybody please.

If you have a corp IT department can't you convince them to refresh your machine more than once every 8 years? Most corporate machines are refreshed every 3 years... 8 is 2 2/3 times normal life. Maybe suggest a nice shiny new 24" iMac

  • PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphics) not booting after processor upgrade. Help!

    Hey,
I just bought a Encore/ST G4 SG4-1600 1.6 Ghz (Duo) and trying to get my PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphics) (originally 500Mhz) to run with it.
I have upgraded the firm ware to 4.2.8f, and restarted the PMU on the Logic Board.
I have also checked that my logic board is two core compatible.
The computer just sits there after it's been turned on, the the motherboard is lit up and the all the fans are running, but it stops there, no screen, tone, or anything. Will just sit there with out ever spinning a hard drive.
If some one could help me get this going, please help!

I downloaded it, (for Mac OS 10.4.x) but getting a continuos error message reading:
    Programing Not Successful!
    Boot Section 0xF029672E
    Recovery Section 0xC381FF3F
    Main Section 0x73CCD5A8
This happens everytime I try to run the app. Could it be because it's OS X? I had to intall OS9 to update my firmware.
It says it's made to work on a PMG4 (agp) so I don't understand what's happening.

  • Need opinion : Tiger Server running on PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphic)?

    Dear Gurus,
I have a spare PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphic) with 2GB RAM, and a spare copy of 10.4 Server. Is it reasonable to install Tiger Server into this PowerMac? The computer will serve as a file server for about 20+ user (mostly documents, no video or gigabyte psd file).
The machine meet Tiger minimum system requirement but I need some real life opinion of whether this is okay, or just a bad idea (system will sluggish, etc, etc.)
    TIA

Server doing File Sharing is an I/O problem, not a compute problem. I have run Server 10.3 on a Beige G3 \[with a SCSI RAID added].
You need fast Hard Drives and a fast (preferably Gigabit Ethernet) connection to the workstations to get "near Hard Drive" performance.

  • Wake On LAN vs PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics

    Hi all,
I'm trying to wake up my Sawtooth using almost all the available utility (via cli or gui) to send the magic packet.... maybe the Sawtooth just doesn't support this feature: can somebody confirm my hypothesis?
    Thanks in advances

Your computer doesn't support this feature; those that do are listed on this page.

  • G4 AGP Graphics - 2nd display won't work after upgrading from os 10.2

I have a desktop G4 AGP Graphics with two displays. When I was running os 9-10.2, the second display worked fine, but after upgrading the os (now running 10.4), the second display still works, but has turned gray and pixelated.
When I take a screen shot, the picture shows that both displays appear clear (and in color).
Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any suggestions

so do you have 2 different video cards driving two different monitors? or is it One video card with 2 displays?
the info you listed isnt very detailed but it does tell me you got an ATI video card with 16MB VRAM.
I assume that thats the Stock AGP 2x graphics card that came the The PowerMac G4 AGP graphics model.
why is your display set to 8bit depth? a stock 2x AGP card with 16MB VRAM should be able to support 16bit or 24bit depth even at 1024 x 768 res.
the info says also Core image not support as well as Quartz Extreme no supported. Which is significant because it could be why the 2nd Monitor doesnt display properly with Tiger.
under 10.2 there were less stringent requirements for driving video.
OSX 10.4 Tiger is much more advanced OS and has higher graphics cards requirements now.
I could be wrong, but I think you may need a newer video card that supports Quartz Extreme and Core image.
hopefully someone else will run by this topic and offer some insight aside from my own.

I have the original mac g4 AGP Graphics. I want to power it up a little bit more, but I don't know what to buy for a discontinued machine. In the near future I want to start fooling around with video editing, photos and later on games as well.

I have three g4's at work, all 400MHz (AGP graphics), one of which I am trying to upgrade (for my boss). I bought a NEW 20" Apple Cinema Display and got the usual grey screen turning to black. I was advised that only the ATI 9800 Mac Edition (not SE or Special Edition) is backward compatible to the 2x AGP slot (which I seem to have confirmed in my search for a replacement for the ATI 128 Pro (DVI-D + VGA, cannot be used at same time).

  • PowerMac G4 (AGP) and HD LCD Monitor

I gave my daughter a few years ago my old G4 PowerMac (AGP Graphics) which has a VGA port and is connected to a huge Apple 17" CRT Studio Display. I'd like to give her a modern LCD display. The HP 2009M HD LCD Monitor states that it comes with a standard analog VGA input. Is there any reason this monitor would not work with the G4 PowerMac?

I looked at the HP site and it didn't mention anything about being able to use this display w/ Mac computers. It Looks like this LCD panel is Windows XP/Vista only.
Not sure why it wouldn't be Mac-compatible, though.
You could just do a search for Mac-compatible LCD panels or monitors and see what comes up.
There are plenty of non-Apple LCD panels that work fine with Macs.
I had my girlfriend purchase an LCD flat panel monitor that was, relatively, cheap. It was labeled only worked with Windows. We bought it and it's connected up to a Radeon 7000 video card via DVI in a old beige G3 box upgraded to G4 status and it works fine.
With using the VGA connections, I can't see why the HP wouldn't work.
Personally, I have found that most LCD displays are not platform-specific, anyway.
    The HP should work fine.

  • Power Mac G4 400 MHz (AGP graphics) will not boot from hard drive

    I have a Mac G4 400 MHz (AGP graphics) Machine Model: PowerMac 3.1 CPU Type:PowerPC G4 (2.8)
When I try to boot from the hard drive I get the folder with the flashing question Mark. The Machine will start up from the OSX 10.4 installer disk.
The system was running OSX 10.4.9 fine. I began to have problems with the hard drive, so I replaced it with an old Maxtor 5T040H4 40Gig Apple branded drive that I had sitting around.
The drive is jumpered (r50) for Master/Single.
I erased the drive in the old G4 using disk utility and wrote all zeros. I then used my store bought Tiger 10.4 install disk to install 10.4 on the drive.
After restarting I still get the flashing question mark. If I leave the Install disk in the DVD drive the system will attempt to install again.
I have zapped the PRAM, pressed the CUDA button, removed the battery and let the system sit unplugged for over and hour and it still will not boot from the hard drive.
To test the drive I removed it and put it in a Granite Digital firewire enclosure and connected it to another mac. The drive shows up and the system appears to be installed correctly.
What am I forgetting to do? Does anyone have any suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.
    Wesley G.

Hi! If Tom's solution doesn't work I would reboot from the install disc and then partition the drive as 1 partition instead of erasing it. Sounds like the driver on the disk is too old and installing a new partition map should write a new driver to the drive that is compatible with Tiger. Other than that it is possible that the drive has a spin delay jumper enabled and the drive isn't spinning up fast enough and the computer isn't looking long enough for the drive. Tom

  • Powermac G4 AGP Airport card (b) not seeing network

I have a friend who has an older Powermac G4 (with AGP graphics card) that has an installed original Airport Card (b only). he would like to connect to his home network (other newer mac computers and HP printer) wirelessly using the Airport card. He is running Mac OS X 10.4.11 on this computer
because he needs access (only on this computer) to Mac OS Classic, and this version of the operating system is the last version to support
    Classic.
The troubleshooting I have done has only resulted in "your Airport card must be bad"
Hopefully, there are other options as well, but I have not yet found them. And, being that this computer is so old, it is also not a frequent or new/hot topic.
Any and all help would be most appreciated. My friend is very ill and trying to get this connection working for his wife before he dies, so time is of the essence.
Thanks in advance for the help,
    Marc

    Hello,
Is the Router they're trying to connect to maybe 802.11n only? Some have a setting to allow 802.11b/g or not.
Is the Router using WPA2? The 802.11b card can only do WEP or WPA, & the very 1st 802.11b card needed a firmware update to even do WPA.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining the Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • Best AGP graphics card for 1st gen Power Mac G5?

    I have a dual 2Ghz 1st generation Power Mac G5 (AGP Graphics).
I currently have the ATI Radeon 9800 PRO SE 256mb, but in my view it's not fast enough for sane Aperture use.
What do you recommend? I was looking at the ATI 800 XT, but surely there are newer and better ones.
Also, Is there a 850 XT onsale or was it only ever 'build to order'? I can't find it on ATI's website, they only have the 800 XT.
    Thanks

The 800xt is available from the apple store and I believe from ATI directly. Surf on over to barefeats.com and check out their performance tests on core image functions and various video cards, the 800 holds its own even with newer cards like the nvidia 7800 available as a bto in the newer G5's. The reason I believe that the 800xt is the end of the road for us AGP G5 owners is that even if we modded a newer card to work (as some out there are doing) there is a limit on the throughput, and the extra capacity goes unused. Getting the 800xt will get you through to the next generation of Powermacs-guess they will drop the power part-perhaps MacTowers-where PCI express will open up the options to whatever the PC community is putting out, with the exception of driver support I guess. But the 800 is good enough combined with 2 or more gigs of memory, and perhaps at somepoint, you might consider a RAID solution if you want to squeeze another year or so out without upgrading.

  • Processor from Dual 450 Gigaethernet to 400 single AGP Graphics compatabil

Can I put the duel 450 processors into single 400 mhz 100bus AGP Graphics G4?
I have another older and smaller mac and want to know if, after uprading my Giga-ethernet G4 (100mhz bus) whether the processors from it can be fitted to the AGP Graphics machine?
    It has 1.12 gb ram
    Machine model is Powermac 3.1
CPU type is Powerpc G4 (2.6)
    20 gig hard drive
    Any ideas?

    Hi
I guess one option may be to upgrade the processor in the AGP Graphics machine instead. You could always swap some RAM and the hard drives etc between the two to make it your 'main' computer. As far as I'm aware the only advantages of the Gigabit Ethernet (other than gigabit ethernet and the fact they're slightly newer) are that some models came with dual processors and I think it also supports graphics cards with an ADC connector (unlike the AGP Graphics).

Thanks, just so I know we are talking about the same items please let me know - When you say "run Prokit" do you mean downloaded? Which I did. I dont have Prokit 4.0.1 if you are referring to that, do I need this first? Please explain what application name I am looking for if other than Prokit which is sitting in my "download folder" do I need to manually put it into the apps folder? Sorry if the questions are layman but this area is not a very strong point for me. Thanks for your help so far.

    You either need to either:
    1) use the following hack -

  • AGP Graphics cards and Final Cut Pro...?

    Hello everyone,
I just received a new computer today. Dual G5...It comes with the PCI Graphics Card. My old computer was a G5 as well but had a AGP Graphics Card. I reinstalled FCP4 today and tried to use it, but it says that the AGP Graphics card is missing. Do I need a AGP Graphics Card to run FCP4? And if so, why wouldn't the new computers come with one? I mean it seems silly that you can go and get a brand new G5 and FCP4 and not have it work. Anyone?
