Powermac G4 DA Dual 533 - External FW HDD Size Limit
Hi there,
Power Mac G4 Dig Audio Dual 533 - OS 10.3.2 - 896 MB RAM.
I need space for Pro Tools files. Been living in the studio for 2 months, and suddenly have very little space left.
I want to get an external FW400 enclosure, and I see the following one that catches my eye from TigerDirect:
Vantec NexStar3 Black 3.5" USB 2.0 / FireWire Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure - Item # V13-3256
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=21710 25&Tab=0&NoMapp=0
I want to put the largest hard drive I can get in that enclosure.
Two possibilities:
Western Digital / Caviar SE / 320GB / 7200 / 8MB / ATA-100 / EIDE Hard Drive
or
Maxtor / DiamondMax 21 / 320GB / 7200 / 16MB / ATA-100 / EIDE / RoHS / OEM / Hard Drive
You see any problems with that working on my system? Anybody have any personal experience with the drives or the enclosure? The enclosure gets good user reviews. I like that it doesn't have an exhaust fan (noise value), and that it's a sturdy aluminum enclosure. I tried the Ultra drive enclosures, and am disappointed in them. The fans die quick and they're noisy as heck.
Hi-
You don't have to worry about drive size limits with externals.
I checked your link, but found no info on the enclosure's chipset. It is recognized that the Oxford 911(112) chipsets provide the greatest compatibility in firewire enclosures.
You might browse the housing selections at OWC:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/External-Enclosures/
Hard drives are more personal preference, and the one's you listed are reputable brands. Might as well compare drives as well:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/3.5-IDE-ATA/
Best deal, though, are these "build to suit" externals. Even have bundled software, and can choose the drive size, and interfaces that you want:

I have a MS-7380 (P7N SLI Platinum Ver 1.0) and a few months ago bought 2 Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA hard drives. One is in an external USB enclosure, the other I have attached to SATA4 on the main board. I have been gradually filling up the internal drive, and on trying to copy an 8GB file the copy stopped and the drive appeared to freeze and a reboot was required. I suspected a faulty drive so booted off Ultimate Boot CD and ran Seatools diagnostics whic passed the drive in all tests. I backed it up to the external (which I could add the extra files to) and deleted the partition. On trying to format the remade partition (full size) the format stopped at 54% (1TB of formatted space). I put the drive in the external USB enclosure and attached it to my MSI MS-163A Notebook. I then partitioned the drive again and successfully performed a full format. Both desktop and notebook are running Win7 Pro, 64-bit on the desktop and 32-bit on the notebook.
This leads me to suspect that my motherboard has a limit on the size of a disk partition that it can write to. Can anyone confirm this for me please? Thanks for the suggestion. I was considering that too. When I first got it I formatted it in my external USB enclosure. Windows sees it as a 2TB drive and reported free space etc correctly, but when writing to the drive as in my OP it got to 54% capacity then failed. I thought it was a faulty drive but it seems it isn't. As my motherboard must be about 4 years old now I'm considering upgrading, but my common sense says that if it's still working and performance is good then is it worth spending the money?

3 mem stick in dual mode - how high + external usb HDD boot question
Hi guys. I have 2 questions:
1. If I put 2X512 mb Kingmax DDR 433 mem sticks in one channel and the 1 gb stick in another one will I be able to run mem clock on 209 MHz in dual channel mode (because of memory controller limitations)? Is there any chance to break 200 fsb limit with this memory combination.
2. I have Philips SPD 5100CC external USB HDD. Last night I tried to install windows xp on it but after first reboot I am getting the messsage Windows could not boot ........windows root\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupted. I have latest bios and the drive is listed in boot menu under Hard Drive option and so is my USB flash drive. I boot without any problem from USB flash. Is this related with the mobo or external HDD encosure?well, one thing is sure, you won't get dual channel if you use 3 memory sticks. the problem is that sometimes you cannot even boot with 3 modules installed. check the mobo manual on the possible memory modules configurations

PowerMac G4 (FW800) Dual 1.42 freezing
Hi there,
my PowerMac drives me crazy. Always, especially saving or importing movies (QuickTime or iMovie) the system completely freezes. No mouse-movements or keyboard-reaction. Just "hit" the powerbutton and restart the Mac again.
Importing MPEG4 H264 after around 1 GB, DV format after 4 GB... But these are just examples. I get freezes with other applications either.
It is not software related. Tried Tiger, Panther, Jaguar.. every version with typical software maintenance. (single user modus, reset nv- and p-ram...)
Hardware:
- removed any RAM (4 x 512 MB)and switched them around. Bought a new one and tested every slot. (memtest)
- tried disk utilities
- tried disk warrior and tech tool pro and AHT
- tried another harddisk, also the other ata cable
- replaced the processor with new heat sink (the processor was never overheated. Always around 45 degrees celsius.
- tried another graphic card without ADC.
- worked with Superdrive disconnected
- no pci-cards istalled or external devices.
- tried different usb ports for keyboard/mouse
- changed battery
What else can I do...?? It is really disappointing.
Any help is appreciated.
PowerMac G4 FW800 Dual 1.42 Mac OS X (10.4.3)I occasionally experience keyboard/mouse lack of response.
Try disconnecting the keyboard/mouse. Count to 10, reconnect, count to 10 again.
Do they work now?
Since you know the when of the freeze, then it also might be worthwhile to have activity monitor open to see what application/process is acually consuming all the processor cycles. Is it always the same process?
How long do you wait before the hard powerdown? It's possible that (whatever) program is post processing your (presumably quite large) video file, and it's just taking a some time to do that task. (thus the activity monitor idea)
Do you also see lots of disk activity when the system seems to go to neverneverland? -
Will the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter allow an external FW HDD to boot a TB Mac?
Hi all,
Will the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adapter allow an external FW HDD to boot a TB Mac (the 2014 Mac mini in this case, but I suspect the same will be true with any TB Mac)? I have all FW800 external HDDs, want to be able to boot from them like I can with a FW 800 equipped Mac, and don't want to buy TB external HDDs.
Thanks!I just placed my older MacBook in Target Disk mode and then booted my 2103 Mac Pro with Option key and the MacBook's HD was available as a bootable drive. I will not boot since the McBook is maxed out at Lion

Finder crashes when I try to open my external USB HDD
Hello all. I have been experiencing issues with my external USB HDD (WD Passport) and my Macbook Pro (Summer 2012) for some time. It looks that the HDD shows up on the desktop when I connect it but when I try to open the My Passport icon on the desktop Finder crashes. Finder works OK generally and I can see everything (even the Passport listed) but I cannot access the Passport HDD contents.
I have tried accessing it via terminal and managed to view the Passport contents ok (ls -ltr etc)
I have tried repairing the disk but the issue remains.
I have connected Passport to a Windows 7 PC and it works OK. I have even tried repairing it on a Windows PC but it has not helped.
Ejecting, rebooting etc does not solve the issue
Every time the issue occurs I see a PM Report Crash for Finder
11/24/13 5:46:21.004 PM ReportCrash[1374]: Saved crash report for Finder[1377] version 10.8.3 (10.8.3) to /Users/Panos/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Finder_2013-11-24-174621_Panos-MacB ook-Pro.crash
Could you please suggest any solution to this problem??Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Question on Time Capsule and external USB HDD
Hello everyone,
I have a 500GB Time Capsule that is working wonderfully. I recently have been downloading a number of large .iso image files that are taking up a lot of space on my internal drive on my Macbook Pro. I do not back these files up on the Time Capsule as it is getting full and i want it to backup other more important things.
I do however wish to backup these files. My current desk is rather full and really will not allow me to purchase a large 3.5" HDD and plug it in USB.
Is it possible to plug an external drive into the back of the Time Capsule and have it be used as a wireless disk as well?
I would prefer to have that drive not be part of the Time Capsule disks, i just want to be able to access it wireless over my network.
I would be grateful if anyone can help me out. If this solution will not work, is there some sort of NAS disk solution i can get to work with my TC?
ThanksAll you need is an external USB HDD. It needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended - Journaled), if you plan on a future Time Machine Disk on this drive, or FAT/FAT32. You could get a NAS, but you don't need to if you already have TC. Can I assume the USB port is free or do you have a USB printer hooked up to it?

I am connecting an external USB HDD and I can see it on my Apple Macbook Air. BUT this drive is READ only. How can I write to it?
Drive Partition and Format
1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive. -

Thx in advanceYes I have the same problem with a WD My Passport Essential on a 2011 iMac running Mavericks. Opening Unlock Drive I find it says 'The drive is already unlocked' but will not allow me to see the contents of the drive. Only the Smartware 'CD' image shows up in Finder. Unaccountably the same WD drive unlocks fine on a 2009 MacBook (also running 10.9) How can I 'set a breakpoint' as advised below in Terminal result...? I am worried I will accidentally lose the data on the 750Gb drive in the process of fixing the error.
Thank you for advice!

External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder
External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder.
I have an 2008 Mac Pro 8 core 2.66hz, 10GB Mem, ATI HD4870 with 4 internal 1 TB Drives. I have 3 external HDDs (2 USB + 1 FW400). The 2 USB HDDs are for Time Machine and backups.
The external FW HD is a 1TB bootable clone of my Internal 1 TB boot HDD.
I have 2 problems ... somethimes when using finder or opening a folder, copying files, starting or quiting a program, I get the spinning beach ball that seems to hang the Mac.
I power off the external FW HDD and everything starts to work. I get an error about the device going offline, I then power the FW HDD back on and all is good.
It seems the external FW Drive tends to hang the system. It occurs pretty frequently.
Any recommendations?
The other issue is that when I use finder to go to a folder, I seem to have to wait for all these drive to spin up. You can hear them all start whirring.
is there a way to remove that lag?If you recently moved to Snow Leopard you might look for new firmware for your external drive. I would also get DiskWarrior and run that on the external and consider programs like Drive Genius. You might also back it up and wipe it and restore the data. After that I'd consider looking at a new external.
Sleeping drives that take time to spin up after waking....I'd like to learn how to stop that myself. Be sure the Energy Saver in System Preferences is set to not put drives to sleep when possible. Even then my drives will go to sleep and I have up to 6 external added at times and they take quite a while to all spin up. I've never found a way to prevent that.
BTW...external USB drives on a MacPro? Really? Even for backup.... -
Can powermac g5 burn dual layer?
Hi guys,
can powermac g5 burn dual layer dvds? I think mine is superdrive. It was on the top of the range when I bought it, before the intel chips came out.
thanks for the help
JackPost the information that's contained in the "Disc Burning" section of System Profiler. That will tell us what drive you have. In any event, if Apple supports DL burning with that drive, you should see "+R DL" or something like that in the list of supported formats.
I can't tell which G5 you have from your signature, so this is the best I can do for now. It's certainly not a dual-core PowerMac, as those couldn't run 10.3.9, as you have listed in your signature. -
External firewire hdd | no suspend mode?
hi list!
i'm using an external hdd with an prolific 3507 chipset, which causes a few problems with apple mac os x 10.4. so finder hangs sometimes and freezes the whole sys. but it looks pretty good after 10.4.8 update.
unfortunately it doesn't go into suspend mode when i'm hibernating the mac mini. but the strange thing is, that this 'feature' worked before (shortly after i bought it), but stopped working after a kernel upgrade (i think it was 10.4.4). anyway it works with the usb2 connection...
any hints? does suspending your macs lead to a supend of the external firewire hdds?
mac mini 1.66 dc, 1 gb ram Mac OS X (10.4.6)You probably should re-post in the Boot Camp forum, this is where the Boot Camp and MS Windows folks hang out.

N8 and western digital external network hdd
Hello all Nokians
I have N8 and i don't know how to connect to my external network hdd.
Any help?
Thanks in advance. With USB OTG it is more a matter of power consumption because some devices consume much more than limit of 200mA.

External USB HDD Wireless Sharing
HI,
I have an external USB HDD which has an HFS partition which I used to backup my macbook using TimeMachine. Now I want to share my external USB HDD wirelessly.
I know it can be possible by using Airport Exterme Base Station or use the Time Capsule.
I want to know if any other Wireless Routers support the HFS partition to be shared wirelessly?By default, Personal File Sharing only shares specific directories on your boot drive and home directories. If you want to share external volumes you need to configure them manually.
The easiest way to do this is to get a copy of SharePoints which puts a nice GUI on the file sharing configuration files.
