PowerMac G4 for a media tank to run home entertainment
Hello everyone.
I am thinking about buying a G4 Powermac off ebay to put it on our TV and possibly sound system as a sort of media centre centred around itunes. I'd get a cheap wireless keyboard and mouse to control it, and maybe do a bit of work with it. I know Apple TV sort of does this but think this could be another way better for me. We have an iMac and MacBook both running snow leopard. Ideally we would want to be able to see the PowerMac on the home network with our present Mac's so it would integrate fully.
Would a PowerMac do this well and what sort of stuff would I want it to have to make it work well.
Thank you
Stuart
Hi Stuart, at the highest a G4 will run 10.5.8, which at this point integrates well with 10.6
Which exact G4, CPU speed, & Graphics card?
Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
minimum system requirements
* 512MB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
* DVD drive for installation
* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.
There are workarounds if the 867MHz is the only hangup...

Windows Media Player Extension "Add-on for this website failed to run" except for Administrator
This is on a Windows server 2008 r2. I am trying to allow users to watch help videos at a vendor site. If I remote desktop using the Administrator, I can play the videos and if I check the "manage add-ons", I see Windows Media Player as an extension.
If I remote desktop on as a "normal user" and try to view the same video, I get the error message "An add-on for this website failed to run" and if I check the "manage add-ons", Windows Media Player extension is not there. That
makes sense, since if it is not there, it won't run.
Why isn't Windows Media Player extension showing up in IE 10 on the server for anyone other than Admin? How could I make this work? If I am somehow preventing this from taking place, where would I go on the server to change that?Hi,
Have you try adding this video website into trusted sites zone or compatibility view list?
Generally, improper security settings may casue failure to run some add-ons. So, please attempt to decrease security level for Internet Zone to check if this issue still occurs.
How do you think your issue is related to Windows Media Player extension? Based on my knowledge, Flash player plug-in can lead to the problem. Please reinstall your flash player for the current user.
Also, Please check in event log for more clues.

Vhost configuration for Adobe Media Server running under linux.
Please help me with Vhost configuration for Adobe Media Server running under linux.
I was running a media sharing website for which I wanted to use Adobe Media Server.
To use, AMS, I disabled the already installed Apache server and installed AMS along with the built in Apache server. I could successfully install AMS and could login to AMS Admin Console through my IP number.
My existing website, www.mydomain.com is having its contents located at:
/home/mydomain/public_html
(Directory created under the old version of Apache not bundled with AMS)
Users will be uploading their videos, which will get transcoded and will be delivered to the website visitors in the existing scenario.
To use this website with AMS, this is what I did:
I created a folder for my domain, www.mydomain.com as below
/opt/adobe/ams/conf/_defaultRoot_/www.mydomain.com
Copied Application.xml and Vhost.xml from /opt/adobe/ams/conf/_defaultRoot_/ and pasted them in /opt/adobe/ams/conf/_defaultRoot_/www.mydomain.com
In the Application.xml file there are 2 entries:
<Alias name="mydomain.com"></Alias>
<AppsDir>${/home/mydomain/public_html}</AppsDir>
Please help me with further steps to be completed:
Do I need to create a separate VirtualHost entry in the Apache installed with AMS?
If yes, can I specify already existing document root for my website (/home/mydomain/public_html) or do I need to create a separate folder under webroot/Apache ?
If yes to point 2 above, then do I need to copy all the existing contents from /home/mydomain/public_html to the newly created folder ?
I hope, I can serve all my static contents like html pages and php and media like video/audio. In that case do I need create alias to my Media/Alias folder or AMS will automatically start streaming when a video/audio is requested ?
What other steps do i need to complete?
Any help in this regard would be highly appreciated.

Are there any recovery tools for optical media?
I've had a couple of DVD's turned in to coasters recently and I was hoping that Linux could come to my rescue with some awesome 'raw-read' / recovery tools for optical media?
I burnt the discs in Windows 7 using InfraRecorder on a brand new Plextor drive (a 'PX-891SA') and these are my first attempts to burn discs with it so I'm a bit worried it could be a hardware fault!
I started off trying to back up some files to clear some space on my hard-drive, burning them to a dual-layer dvd, but the software kept failing to even start the burn process -- that was until I realised that I needed to run the program "as Administrator" (in Windows). It did then manage to burn the disc (I was using "Session-at-Once" mode) however when it came to the end of the burn process / the start of the 'verify data' phase it threw an error saying the write process had failed! Windows couldn't access the disc / data and (I think) still thought the disk was empty. So I restarted the burning application and used a function to just 'close' the whole disc. This seemed to work because Windows was then able to recognise the disc and read the data, although accessing the disc was slow and sounded 'stutter' ish.
I then tried to write a single layer dvd to finish off the last couple of gig I had to back up, but again the software completed the burn phase only to report a 'fail' error right at the end (I'm assuming) before finalising the disc. Although this time I'd tried to create a multi-session disc by using the '2XXA' (or something) 'Multi-Session' iso9660 format. The result was that Windows couldn't read the disc and still thought it was empty, even after trying a forced 'close disc' operation! -- Linux however could read the disc and see that the data had in fact been burnt to the disc (although I've not yet tried copying it in Linux!).
Finally I needed to burn a load of archives to a couple of discs (totaling ~9GiB) -- starting with a dual-layer dvd first everything seemed to be working fine, the burn process started okay and the write buffer was full etc., until at what I assume was the layer change-over it all came to a grinding halt and threw another 'write operation failed' error, only this time I can't even mount the disk in Linux....see 'dmesg | tail' output below:
[ 5758.353005] ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3
[ 5758.353015] ISOFS: Interleaved files not (yet) supported.
[ 5758.353016] ISOFS: File unit size != 0 for ISO file (1472).
[ 5758.353019] ISOFS: changing to secondary root
[ 5758.353035] ISOFS: Interleaved files not (yet) supported.
[ 5758.353036] ISOFS: File unit size != 0 for ISO file (1536).
[ 5758.353037] isofs_fill_super: root inode is not a directory. Corrupted media?
Does anyone have any thought or suggestions that might help?
- Is it likely to be a hardware fault? (I bought a Plextor because I thought they were one of the best!)
Maybe even if I could just close the session all would not be lost?

Last edited by wwgfd (2012-12-14 13:18:41)@chris_l -- yeah I was worried that might be the case, still I'm not sure if that explains why it keeps failing the burn process part way through?
I've tried this and that in Linux but without much luck. I'm still quite a noob with a lot of Linux things and this is the first time I'm trying anything to do with optical disks/drives etc. so I'm learning as I go...
The disk that failed in Windows but was 'readable' in Linux did just pass a run through ddrescue -- i.e. it created an output file okay and did not report any errors in the process.
However when I mounted the resulting image and tried to copy the files across the first folder reported an "input/ouput error" (just using gui copy+paste in Thunar file manager)
...the other folders did copy okay though!
It seems as though it's the lead-in / lead-out and disc finalizing process that are the main fail points with the burn operation. I don't know if InfraRecorder is any good or likely to be the problem? Anyway the drive cam with Nero (inc. Linux version) so might give either or both of these a go too, if they don't work either then at least I wont be short of something to rest a mug o' tea on
@ chris_l (again) -- the Plextor drives do have a "Vari-Rec" feature which allows a user to 'tweak' the laser power / output level so I might try this too.
@alphaniner -- thanks I've not seen this package before, I'm guessing it's a bit like cdparanoia but for dvds?!
Thanks for the help!
(pre-post) UPDATE >>> I've just mounted my Windows partition in Linux so I'll have a crack at burning the files using cdrtools before I resort to throwing the dvd drive out of the window and chasing it around the yard with a lump hammer -
I had previously purchased the programs "Pages" and "Numbers" and they are on my iPhone and iPad I was told that the programs would automatically copy a version of itself for the iMac to be running them but I don't see it installed. How can I install for free? I see that I could go to the apple store and purchase them again but I belibve that since I had already purchased them; I would get a free copy for my Imac. Do I got something confused here? Please help.
Whoever told you that was misinformed or lying. Those applications are sold separately for the iOS platform and the Mac platform.
Go to the Mac App Store to purchase Pages and Numbers for your Mac. They're $20 each. If you are running an older version of Mac OS X that can't use the Mac App Store, you can purchase install media from Apple. -
QuickTime plug-in for Window Media Files?
Microsoft recently announced that they will stop developing any update or improvement for Window Media Player for the Mac: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060113/apon_hi_te/microsoftapple
It is a little disappointing aspect because sometimes I keep running into cool websites that have many WMFs but few or no QT support. Right now I'm unable to play any WMF because Window Media Player is very buggy.
Is Apple going to push for some kind of WMF plug-in support for future QuickTime app since Microsoft is going to kill off development for WMP for the Mac?
Please advice.Windows Media Player 9 for the Mac has not been updated since 2003 so Microsoft's announcement is disingenuous to say the least. They haven't supported or developed the thing in, literally, years.
I cannot say enough good things about the Flip4Mac WMV player that allows you to view WMV files in Quicktime. There is also a browser plugin that lets WMV files play in Safari just like WMP9, only BETTER! And the player is now FREE. Strangely, Microsoft is even recommending it as a replacement for WMP9. It works perfectly on sites like CNN that use Windows Media Player for their video content and is compatible with more codecs than WMP9. Check out Microsoft's website for information and download.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/flip4mac.mspx
I highly recommend you download and install the Flip4Mac WMV Player. You can say goodbye and good riddance to WMP9. -
Premiere Pro CC crashes immediateley playing AVCHD media in browser (running OSX 10.8 > please help!
I've been running CS6 perfectly on OSX 10.8.4. but decided to update to a trial CC. That's when all the fuss began.
Trying to play AVCHD material in the browser and it good stuck. Forced quit and then opened again. Then it good stuck in the startingwindow already.
Reinstalled CC, because it might have been the installation. But again failed.
Then used Adobe cleaner tool. But still failed.
Then decided to go back to cs6. But now that one gets stuck too.
Again deinstalled everything with Cleaner tool, and installed my CC trial again. Still gets stuck.
Tried to make a new user without any Adobe on it, but still fails.
What can I do? Because of all this mess I'm a week late on my editing-schedule, which is very frustrating. I might have to go back to FCP, and I don't want to.
Please help me!
Thanks so much. This is the crashreport>

I have found that since I "upgraded" to Mavericks, many pieces of audio hardware that was compatable with snow leopard is not compatable with mavericks. these machines are supposed to be the best for multi-media, now, without any warning, Mac has really messed this up. What are they thinking. I just converted from PC. Was it a $3000 mistake. MAC....Get BUsy, It can't be that hard to create some drivers that are compatable with common and popular pieces of hardware needed to do the projects I bought this thing for!!!!
similar problem here. running the latest 13 inch mbpr and ableton live software, mavericks obvsly.
experiencing crashes only with external soundcards attached. it happened with a usb interface (NI audio 2 dj) and with a echo audiofire 2 (firewire through thunderbold adapt.)
keyboard and trackpad got unresponsive after the crash with the usb interface as they run on the usb buss I suppose.
This is interesting: If i m running usb or firewire interfaces plugged in to my thunderbold display at home - i get 0 problems. it just works 100%
so what does this tell us? is the hardware of the macbook defective?
but why does the FW interface crash then when attached to the computer directly and not if attached to the display?
this is extremely frustrating. basically my job is using this machine on stage and i cant use it. i m back to my 2007 macbook now running 10.6, thinking about getting a USED machine which was before mavericks and haswell - think these are the issues and what i would like to know:
WILL THERE EVER BE A FIX FOR THIS ON THE LATE 2013 MBPr?? -
ITunes gift card for Windows Media Player library
I am wanting to buy an iTunes giftcard for my brother for his birthday, however he runs his MP3 player through Windows Media Player (Vista) and has never used iTunes before. Will he be able to copy over the files once downloaded so that they'll be usable through Media Player?
If not, then obviously I'll have to think again!
CheersHe needs to install this plugin or convert the songs into MP3 in iTunes, and purchase only iTunes Plus content.

Using Automator for scheduled tasks for my media folder.
Anyone with automator experience that are able to help me set up a scheduled task for my media folder, using for example iCal?
I have 2 programs for cleaning and adding metadata for my media folder:
iFlicks and iDentify.
And I want them to scheduled clean new files in my folder. iFlicks first, and iDentify next.
Complicated? Doable? If you are not too keen on running those commands you might want to try http://www.igetter.net/iGetter.html This download manager seems to allow the scheduled downloading that you need. I think you would have to go to the Apple site and find the url for the standalone updaters to find the link after Software Update identifies them. Then use this program to schedule the downloads. Sometimes those seem more stable anyway.
The program us shareware. It appears from the description that the program remains fully functional but puts up a nag screen if the program has not been registered. -
X686 or x64 for HD Media Playback on an AMD/ATI based system?
Hello, I'm about to leave Xubuntu for Arch and, normally, I would automatically default to 32bit simply as I've had bad luck with media decoding in the 64bit realm. However, I've read lots about how refined the x64 variant of Arch is so I'm wanting to find out if I would be safe if I took the dive and gave x64 another shot.
I've searched around here and browsed the x64 section and read a few other 64 vs. 32 bit threads, but my question is fairly specific and I haven't seen the answer anywhere yet.
Primarily I'm concerned about ATI's driver being the same on 32bit and 64bit as I've been waiting for 9.3 in hope that it will fixe some problems I currently have with it (no hardware decoding for HD content, and a problem with underscanning on my HDTV). I've also had problems with there simply not being some 64bit codecs for some media, or that if they exist they are generally behind their 32bit equivalents.
So that sums up my main concerns, also though, I've been reading through the install guide and wiki entries and haven't seen mention of x64 or x686 specific instructions. Is everything the same for both, or did I just miss something?
CheersRanguvar wrote:I suggest this thread be moved to Threads Going Nowhere. Sorry, but this topic has been discussed over nine thousand times Search the forums, you'll see. I've _never_ had problems because of 64-bit Arch (except me being very stupid once and installing 32-bit packages straight from the i686 repos.....), but search for more testimonies both ways.
Shoot, nine thousand times? I guess I should of searched a bit harder!
But yeah, move it wherever's fitting, but I needed answers to my specific questions and got some good information I had not yet found (especially about the upcoming FFmpeg bluray support!).
Anyway, I'm up and running with Arch and wanted to do a post install run-down. I did a rough install by the seat of my pants and manage to get it booting just fine. I installed links along with the base packages. Once I got it up and running I tried to jump straight to xfce4 (kinda thinking I was probably missing something) and then when it failed to start because X was not installed I took a step back and loaded the beginners guide in links. I read it front to back and then formatted and reinstalled.
My first attempt would have been solid had I not messed up and installed grub to my /boot. I was unclear from the beginners guide as it was following a partition scheme that didn't have a separate /boot partition. I rebooted and I was presented with a grub terminal and unable to rectify it with commands after reading a bit on the forum and wiki. I blitz through a second install and got everything right, after rebooting grub loaded up and I booted sucessfully into my shiny new Arch install.
From there I went through getting everything setup as per the guide, only ran into a problem when I was doing the baseline test with xterm. I was completely unable to get it to load dvorak during the test. I tried and tried but failed. Eventually I just gave up and moved on to installing xfce. Once that was installed I loaded it up and changed the settings in xfce and dvorak is now working.
I'm not sure why one way failed and this other way worked. Whether or not xfce is superseeding the config from hal much in the same way that x superseeds the terminal settings.
Anyway, just wanted to get this down somewhere.
Thanks again for your guy's feedback.
Edit: Oh, and my clock is two hours off, but that's for another day.

When will there be a software update for the Media Hub?
1. Many issues related to playing media types - Need updated or increased CODEC's - Flash, MPG, Divix, WMP should ALL play. Why don't you put ALL the CODEC's in????
2. Support for iTunes playlists. This should be a basic funtion.
3. Funtion to get rid of duplicates as common sense tells you that he Media Hub will see your iTunes LIbrary and the built in function of "Import" creates duplicates.
4. Support for better identification of iTunes related Album artwork. It's there! Wht does the Media Hub not see it as iTunes does?
5. Larger buffer options to cut back on load times for large libraies of photo files. Don't mind giving up some disk space for this too or using an external mem card!
6. Better Sony Play Station support as SP3 sees files as not compatible, yet plays them and not others.
7. When can we expect some form of software update?
8. Does the Media Hub (405) run faster with a single drive if you turn off the two drive option?1. You have to understand that it would be close to impossible to place all the codecs in one device. As some codecs requires DRM.
2. I'm not sure what codec you are after in itunes since M3U is supported by the media hub. Supported File Types for the Built-In Media Player in the NMH
3. I strongly agree with you in this one. Duplicate files using the Import Tool should be automatically be removed. That's why I don't use the Import Tool anymore instead I just use the NTI Shadow when transferring files automatically to the hub.
4. The media hub uses AMG Server to look for album artworks. But the last upgrade of the firmware allows you to use your album arts without the interference of the AMG Server but the art must be tagged on the media file.
5. I agree with you on this one as well.
6. I always keep in mind that not all devices works as what we expect it to be. So better just bear with the Play Station support until we get some updates.
7. Only LinksysbyCisco can answer that. LoL
8. The media hub functions the same way regardless whether you are running on 2 drives or 1. But of course, there will be some minor differences on Read and Write performance when running on RAID 1 since both the drives will have to read and write the same files into it making the processor double its work. -
DVD+R DL - "failed to calibrate the power level required for this media"
For the first time since owning our MBP (almost a year) I have tried to burn DVD dual layer discs. I get the error message that says the "device failed to calibrate the power level required for this media"
I have searched the web and this discussion forum and see many people have the same situation.
I am simply trying to burn 7GB of data in the finder onto my disc.
I am running 10.5.2, and have tried both Fuji and Memorex discs with no success. I am a little ****** off since the discs aren't cheap...
Do I need to get my DVD burner replaced or is this a software / media issue?
Any help very much appreciated. (& the international settings tweak that worked for some did not work in my case.)I found the fix to this problem. I tried the trick with changing the languages and it didn't work for me. After hearing the success stories from other people using the language trick I realized that calling apple and getting my superdrive replaced won't do the trick. My superdrive burns CD and 4.7Gb DVD without any problems but when I try to burn DL it shows the message "failed to calibrate". Here's the temporary solution to the problem (it worked for me)
Create a new account
Change the language to something other than English (I speak Russian so Russian worked for me).
I know that it may not work for some of you guys but give it a shot. Hopefully Apple will fix this software bug in the next update. -
N79; can't run " home media " menu
I'm in Thailand . I just buy N79 , but I have found my phone can run " home media " menu. When I go to " home media " menu it's push back to "connectivity" menu .
When I go to Nokia Care center . They said All N79 was bug as this. Wait to upgrade firmware as now it's already new as 10.046
Please share information with mesawatdee krap,
maybe because you havent set any connections for "home media". i think it needs to connect with your computer. you also need to install SimpleCenter's Home Media Server software on your PC
maybe this will help you -

Hi there
Quick scenario.
We have created a task sequence prestaged media .wim file (SCCM 2007, client OS is Windows XP).
Recently some of these swap-out machinses, on delivery and start up, have started showing this message:
'Certificate has expired for this media'.
This is because the self-signed certificate created during the prestaged media creation process has expired.
My question is: is it possible to mount the image using dism or imagex and then inject an updated sertificate?
Best regards
Johnthe disk that has the prestaged media applied must be the boot partition.
create a task sequence to stage the prestaged media. In this task run a format and partition step which configures both the system disk and the os disk, though make the os disk the active boot partition. Then apply the prestage wim.
On your deploy task, somewhere after the OS has applied create a group that runs only if the media is OEM (from memory _SMSTSMedia =
OEMMedia)
in this group run the command bcdboot C:\Windows /s F: /f ALL where f: is the drive letter assigned to the system disk, then run another step that removes the drive letter and reboots. The deploy task will now continue and you will be booting to the system
partition.
So I wanted to get back to working on this issue. I noticed that when I said it Worked that it was actually still booting from C drive instead of the reserved partition. For the past few days I have been trying to get the prestaged to work like
a network deploy but fail every time. I cannot get the prestaged to boot from any other partition other then the partition where windows was imaged too.
So where I am at today. When I do as suggest above the D drive (The reserved Boot volume) return on reboot. it will not stay hidden. also the OS is till booting from C and does not change to the D drive or no drive letter drive with the above
commands. I think there is some other command missing that tells it to boot from a new location that is not bcdboot.
Has anyone seen any guides for how to use prestaged and bitlocker enabled task sequence? I think that would help me figure out my current issues as with bitlocker you must have this other partition.
