PowerMac G4 (FW800) Dual 1.42 freezing

Hi there,
my PowerMac drives me crazy. Always, especially saving or importing movies (QuickTime or iMovie) the system completely freezes. No mouse-movements or keyboard-reaction. Just "hit" the powerbutton and restart the Mac again.
Importing MPEG4 H264 after around 1 GB, DV format after 4 GB... But these are just examples. I get freezes with other applications either.
It is not software related. Tried Tiger, Panther, Jaguar.. every version with typical software maintenance. (single user modus, reset nv- and p-ram...)
Hardware:
- removed any RAM (4 x 512 MB)and switched them around. Bought a new one and tested every slot. (memtest)
- tried disk utilities
- tried disk warrior and tech tool pro and AHT
- tried another harddisk, also the other ata cable
- replaced the processor with new heat sink (the processor was never overheated. Always around 45 degrees celsius.
- tried another graphic card without ADC.
- worked with Superdrive disconnected
- no pci-cards istalled or external devices.
- tried different usb ports for keyboard/mouse
- changed battery
What else can I do...?? It is really disappointing.
Any help is appreciated.
PowerMac G4 FW800 Dual 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I occasionally experience keyboard/mouse lack of response.
Try disconnecting the keyboard/mouse. Count to 10, reconnect, count to 10 again.
Do they work now?
Since you know the when of the freeze, then it also might be worthwhile to have activity monitor open to see what application/process is acually consuming all the processor cycles. Is it always the same process?
How long do you wait before the hard powerdown? It's possible that (whatever) program is post processing your (presumably quite large) video file, and it's just taking a some time to do that task. (thus the activity monitor idea)
Do you also see lots of disk activity when the system seems to go to neverneverland?

    Hi Phil Brayshaw-
What does the little white power light do? This should be helpful: About the Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) diagnostic LEDs
Although it sounds to me like you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, this document is a good overall reference to address this particular problem: Power Mac G5: What to do if you see black, white, or no video at start up
Have you tried another monitor and/or double-checked your cable and its connections? If everything else is working as expected that would certainly be a major suspect.

    Hi guys,
can powermac g5 burn dual layer dvds? I think mine is superdrive. It was on the top of the range when I bought it, before the intel chips came out.
    thanks for the help
    Jack

Post the information that's contained in the "Disc Burning" section of System Profiler. That will tell us what drive you have. In any event, if Apple supports DL burning with that drive, you should see "+R DL" or something like that in the list of supported formats.
I can't tell which G5 you have from your signature, so this is the best I can do for now. It's certainly not a dual-core PowerMac, as those couldn't run 10.3.9, as you have listed in your signature.

  • PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1.42 not recognizing hard drives

I have a PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1.42 GHz, and I just moved across country, and it was working before the move, now it won't start up. It goes right to a grey screen with a blinking question mark and finder icon. I have 2 hard drives in it. One with Leopard, and the other with Tiger, and it won't recognize either. I reset the PRAM, I checked all the connections inside, started it up holding the option key and it doesn't show either hard drive. I also started it up with the Leopard install disc and using Disk Utility it still couldn't find the drives! Next thing I am going to try is resetting the PMU and see if that works...otherwise both hard drives went bad or possibly the cable for both of them went bad??

When you checked the cable connections, did you check both ends of all cables? For example, if the moving loosened the ATA cable at the logicboard/controller end, checking the drives' connectors won't reveal much.
Do the drives spin up when you power the machine on (you may need to open the side panel and gently touch the drives while booting to test this)? If not, suspect a power cable connection issue. If they do, suspect an ATA cable connection issue.
Best way to confirm a cable connection is sound is to undo it and redo it - they can look okay when they are not okay. Do this with the machine shut down, of course.

  • Powermac G4 MDD Dual 867 vs Powermac G4 Single 1.0 FW800

Hello, I have been a mac user since 2004. I had an iMac G5 1.8 that crashed and I want a replacement for the next year until I can save for a Mac Pro. I saw a great deal for the above Powermac G4's: MDD Dual 867 for $200 and Single 1.0 FW800 for $150. My friend was going to give me his 23" Apple Cinema HD ADC. I will be doing email, internet, about 90% of the time, and sometimes use Photoshop and Lightroom the rest of the time. I will max out the RAM at 2.0Gb, upgrade the Video to 9700 or 9800, and install 10.5 Leopard. What do you guys think?

    C24, welcome to Apple Discussions.
A great price for both. Several considerations. Here's a link to the specs on both. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/index-powermac-g4.html
    1. Are you currently using OS 9 in classic mode. If so, you can use either Mac in Tiger. (same as your G5).
    2. Do you want to be able to boot into OS 9. Only the MDD will do this.
    3. The MDD Dual might be slightly faster if you use multiple applications at the same time and if you do extensive graphics/audio.
Unless you want to boot into OS 9, I would choose the 1GHz. Note: If you upgrade to Leopard, you won't be able to use classic mode.

  • System Freezes, Program Crashes, LockUps on PowerMac G4 125 Dual Processor

I've been trying to track down a problem on my PowerMac G4. Cannot run 2 gigs of ram. Machine either will not boot, freezes, or programs crash. When I go down to 1-1/2 gigs, it works better, but still crashes and freezes (just not as much). Today I went down to 1 gig, and haven't had a problem all day. I've changed out the ram, thinking maybe one was bad. Made sure they were all exactly the same. Apple says it's my software. I've spent weeks contacting all my software manufacturers, they say it's my computer. Adobe says they've fixed all their software to work with more ram, but I do have plug-in applications that I use in Photoshop CS2 and AfterEffects 6.5. I'm fixing to buy a New G5 and would really like to go up to at least 4 gigs of ram. Anyone have a clue as to how to find out what's causing this problem without reinstalling all my software, one program at a time?

I've run Tech Tool Pro. I run a maintenance program every Monday morning because of the high volume of work on my computer; usually switching between Tech Tool one week and Disk Warrior the next. I'm still running with 2 512 dimms and everythings still working great. Not one crash or freeze. After lunch today I'm going to change out the ram and use the other two dimms. If they work, I'll try adding 3 or 4 back in. If I start crashing again, I guess I'm just stuck with 1 gig of ram. Have heard from other people having the same problem when they use programs which access a large amount of ram.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 freezing from Archive Install of Leopard from Tiger

Just archived and installed Leopard from Tiger 10.4.10 and on all our Macs, but our only PPC system is having serious issues. The system boots up fine, faster than before, however the Finder and desktop freeze when booting into any of the two user accounts. Applications run from the dock, but the Menu Bar isn't loading fully (airport, bluetooth, clock, etc don't load). I have run Activity Monitor from the Dock and systemuiserver and finder both freeze. I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM, and in the one instance I was able to get into the files I deleted the systemuiserver and powermanagement plist's.
Upon many hours of research with Apple and at home, nothing seems to be the solution. If I can't resolve this I may have to install a copy of Tiger (or Leopard) on an external HDD, boot and attempt data recovery from the main HDD (if nothing is locked) as a lot of Quicken 2007 files are needed and perform a clean install. If any one is able to give any help I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Also, the Power Mac G5 is Dual 2.3 late 2005 model (specs: http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_Late2005.html ), with 1 GB RAM, ViewSonic VGA monitor, NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, Airport + Bluetooth, and wired keyboard and mouse. Thanks again!

So, would you recommend to people having this same system (as I do) to wait for installing Leopard or maybe to take some precautions?
    I would either:
    A) Wait until 10.5.1 has been released (which may address such issues)
    B) Take serious precautions. Back everything you need onto a separate HD and perform a clean install (which formats your HD), then move everything copied back into the system to ensure no data is lost and nothing corruptible is carried over into Leopard.
Performing the clean install seemed to take care of any conflicts and issues, but means more time will be spent manually backing up and reloading all personal data.
Hope this helps and good luck.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 freezes up, Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 freezes up

    Hello
I inherited a Dual 2.5 PPC Power Mac G5 from my sister. She was having problems with it suddenly freezing up. She replaced the hard drive but that didn't fix it, and sicne she had a newer Macbook Pro she gave up on it. When I got it I replaced the video card on it with an ATI Radeon, and it seemed to run fine for a while, and then the problem returned. It seemed to have returned after I did all the Apple software upgrades on it (It's running Leopard), but that might be a coincidence. I noticed under Diagnostics on the power up test that some RAM had failed. I also noticed that it was running on 1 gb of RAM even though 2 gb were installed. I removed the faulty Ram (4 256 mb dimms) and hoped that that was the problem. Unfortunately it wasn't. I also installed a temperture reading program. It showed that CPU A is running around 80 C at times and is usually about 10C hotter than CPU B. I'm not sure though if 80C is normal for a G5 or not. I noticed that when it was unplugged that it wouldn't retain the time and date, and took a look at the battery, and sure enough it was starting to leak (but hadn't leaked on to any components). I've ordered a new bttery for it.
I ran a check with Disk Utility and found the HD was ok, but permissions were a bit messed up. Disk Utility wasn't able to fix some of the permissions, but i don't think this is the underlying problem.
I've also opened it and gave everything a thourough vacuuming and cleaning and reseated any removable parts. I took the cover off the liquid cooling unit and vacuumed out the dust. There didn;t seem to be any coolant leaks I could see.
Any suggestions on where I should go from here? I unfortuantely don't have any of the disks for it, so I can't run the AHT until I find one for it (the one for my Macbook Pro wouldn't work).
Sometimes it just freezes. Other times it freezes and the computer fans go on high. It will finally get to a point where it shows the grey multi-language restart screen (where it says to hold down the button to shut it off and the restart).
It was frustrating because on my workbench it was running fine after I switched the video card, and it didn't freeze at all. When I moved it to our computer desk though, the problems returned. Tonight it was to the point where it didn't last 5 minutes.
    My thoughts are:
    1. Maybe All the RAM is bad
    2. Maybe the dead battery is messing it up?
    3. When it is heating up with use, something is expanding and not connecting any longer.
    What are your thoughts?

    Hi Curtis,
I'm not sure though if 80C is normal for a G5 or not. I noticed that when it was unplugged that it wouldn't retain the time
Nope, not normal, way too hot, above 70°C... If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.
Have you blown the dust out of everything with high pressure air?\
    1. Maybe All the RAM is bad

  • G5 dual 2 Ghz freezing up with Leopard

I have had a problem with this mac freezing up, applications that are launching cannot be quit and often even a three finger quit yeilds no dialogue box. The only way out after 7 or 8 minutes of nothing is to power down using the front fascia switch, something i am very loathe to do and is now one of the most normal ways to get any sense.
I now have an idea what is happening. I have 2 Iomega Ultramax drives, one is 1TB and i bought for time vault. Originally i was running the two drives daisy-chained through FW800 but recently the older 650gb drive has a tendency of leaving the desktop and on restart only the 1Tb was mounting on the desktop. After a call to Iomega they say daisy-chaining is not supported although they were unable to say why it had been working up to this point for a few weeks.
Anyhow I took the older drive and connected through a USB hub via USB 2 rather than firewire 800. This improved the mountin issue and the drive mounts but after a few minutes operation applications still freeze and if i try to open this drive i get a SPOD whilst it fails to open the drive in finder.
On this basis I have found that in this terminal state of hanging by powering down the 650mb drive although giving me a slap on the wrist warning, breaks the hang and applications that were opening open and all the usual control of the pc is restored until the drive is restarted and mounts back onto the desk top.
I am coming to the conclusion this problem is not one with Iomega but is an Apple Leopard issue It seems theleopard is trying to access this external drive and is failing resulting in a rather long hang. I am hoping 10.5.2 fixes this as I am presuming the whole problem is being caused by some kind of analysis of the Ultramax 650 content is not being resolved and the lockup is only sorted if we crash a drive. This can be up to 3 times an hour and is making it nearly impossible to work on this mac.
Is there anybody out there running two firewire ultramax drives on their computer and having no problems in mounting them onto the dsktop using the same fw 800 cable...
Any advice appreciated thanks for any replies
    Adie

I too am having the same problem. I have a 2ghz G5 with Leopard and an Iomega Ultramax 650Gb. Everything seems fine, but after a couple of hours the OS hangs when trying to access the HD. Nothing works to resolve the issue (Force quit doesn't work, etc.) The OS comes back to life after powering down the drive. Then, after powering up the drive everything works fine for a couple of hours - then the issue hits again - very frustrating. Running Disk Utility 'Verify Disk' on the drive yields a green 'Drive appears to be OK' message.
This seems to have only been an issue for about a week.
I'm running 10.5.1, the Iomega Ultramax 650 is connected via FW800 to my G5 2Ghz.

  • PowerMac 7300 Problems: Browser, Accessing Hotmail, Freezing

We have an ancient PowerMac 7300, with a G3 500Mhz upgrade. I know that some people will tell us to simply get a new(er) computer, but that is not an option right now.
We are having problems accessing many websites, including Hotmail, which we use a lot. We keep getting messages telling us that our web-browsers need to be upgraded. We use mostly Internet Explorer and Netscape.
Are there any other browsers that might run better, and allow us access to more websites with fewer problems? I'm running System 9.1, with 200MB RAM. There are two internal HDs, the main one we use, with System 9.1, is a 40GB, the other HD is a 6GB, with System 8.6.
This old beast still runs great, other than freezing frequently, especially when we try to access the Internet. Thanks for any suggestions.

I've also used the final version of Internet Explorer (5.1.7) for pre-OS X Macs, but it was last updated in 2002 - which makes it incompatible with some web sites. Additionally, Microsoft dropped support for it and pulled the download links from their web site. The first thing that you need to do is allocate more memory to it, because the default "Preferred" memory setting is ridiculously low. You should set it to at least 20-25 MBs as a comfortable amount, since you have enough System memory to be generous. With the program not running, click on its icon to highlight it and select "Get Info - Memory" from the File drop-down menu. Adjust the "Preferred" setting to an amount between 20480K and 25600K. This should prevent freezes and permit the program to run more smoothly, but it won't change the fact that it's an old browser with expired security certificates. Netscape Communicator is known to be a bloated alternative to IE. Others Forum regulars have posted their evaluations of the other browsing options available to pre-OS X users, but those programs are also succumbing to age and a lack of ongoing development.

  • What are those EXTRA Ribbons in near the superdrive, in the g4 FW800 dual?

    HI,
I got a little frustrated today and got careless, trying to partition an external drive by putting it directly inside my G4fw800 dual 1.25.
Instead of unplugging my 2 internals, I decided to try the ribbons that are underneath the superdrive, section of the case. It didnt work. Computer seemed fine, gave up and I went out.
Came home tonight and it won't boot at all:
1- Powerlight goes on, then off computer won't boot.
    Plz help.

    Hi there!
With the video card, you need to pull back gently on the brown or green tab and that will release the video card. Don't worry, when I was on a Digital Audio G4, I had the same problem until I looked in my manual and it said to gently push back the little tab on the AGP slot. The same for the AGP PRO slot.. pull back gently the little brown tab to release it. I believe FW400 and FW800 came with a brown release tab.
If you plugged in a hard drive by mistake to the optical ribbon I don't believe that would cause the problem you are having, as I did that one day and I do remember that my HD was running quite slow. Its only an ATA-3 which is not recommended for hard drives.
Might be something else. Try a PMU reset and report back.
